01:58Oh, I'm a Goodfellas fan, so Rags to Riches always takes me back to that film.
02:02Anyway, I turn it off every time it comes on, I say no to Tony.
02:06Now, I don't say no to Alex, who's now on six wins.
02:09Alex Fish, an accountant from London, and he beat Mike Fenn yesterday, 93 to 56.
02:15And you're heading towards that elusive title of being an octo champ.
02:20And if you get there, we're going to propel you into the future so that you'll then come back in
02:24the final sometime later on in the year.
02:26So brilliant stuff. Well done, Alex.
02:27Right. But before you get there, you've got to overcome Roy Smith, an IT project leader from Hamilton in Lanarkshire,
02:34who's a fanatical Dundee United supporter.
02:37That's something to claim, of course.
02:39And you're a member of the Carlouk Golf Club.
02:42Yeah.
02:42And you once got a hole-in-one?
02:45I did, yes. Many years ago, when I was staying up at the game of golf.
02:48Not at Carlouk, but I did get a hole-in-one in the first.
02:52Unfortunately, I sunk it on the third green.
02:55And the members all stood up and gave me a round of applause.
02:57So they should have not.
02:58Well, I think so, too, yeah.
02:59Well, let's hope at the end of the day, our audience here will stand up and give you a round
03:03of applause.
03:03But before you get that round of applause, you've got to overcome Mr. Fish.
03:09So a big round of applause, then, for Alex and Roy Smith from Hamilton.
03:18And over in the corner, lovely weekend, I trust.
03:22Yeah, very nice.
03:23Yes?
03:23And you left your flock and your herds and all the rest of it down in Taunton in good shape?
03:29I did. I left them in the capable hands of my husband.
03:32Brilliant. It's great to have you back, Deborah.
03:34Great to have you back.

12:27Thank you, Roy.
12:29Popular choice.
12:30At the moment, one large one, five little ones.
12:32And this time around, the selection is seven.
12:35Six.
12:36Three.
12:37Ten.
12:39Two.
12:39And the large one, 100.
12:42And the target, 220.
12:45Two, two, zero.
12:45Two, three, zero.
13:17Roy?
13:18Er, yeah, 220.
13:19220.
13:20Alex?
13:20220.
13:21Thank you, Roy.
13:23Er, 100 plus 10 times two.
13:26Plus 10, 110 times two.
13:28Very, very easy.
13:29Thank you very much.
13:31Exactly.
13:31Happy enough?
13:32Why not?
13:3332 plays, 42 plays, 27.
13:36As we now turn to Deborah.
13:39And Deborah, you started off as a young girl running your own import company,
13:43and then you moved into the family business, I think.
13:46And then before you could say knife, as it were, you're operations director.
13:51And I think there was some extraordinary story you told me earlier about bikers and dancers.
13:56We had a holiday park in Dorset, and it had two ballrooms.
14:01So actually we were able to take two bookings at different parts of the park.
14:04But we were very careful who we matched with who.
14:08And to my horror, one day we got that matching wrong,
14:11and we had a ballroom full of ballroom dancers.
14:15And then we had bikers in the other room.
14:19And we were trying desperately to keep them away from each other,
14:23because we thought, this is not going to work if they ever meet.
14:26So I get the call going, the bikers have just moved en masse over to the ballroom dancers.
14:33And I've got some right security, security, we need to get over there.
14:35When we get there, expecting to see a total melee going on,
14:40the ballroom dancers are teaching the bikers how to ballroom dance.
14:44And I wish social media was, I wish Twitter was around, and Facebook were around then,
14:50because the picture was brilliant.
14:52They all had their leather gear on and everything.
14:54Big, big, burly guys.
14:56And they were having a ball, they were literally having a ball.
14:58How funny, extraordinary, with their big boots on.
15:01Because you then, really, you're sort of, can I be vulgar and say your fortune, as it were,
15:08that enabled you to invest in all these companies sprang out of that.
15:12Because I think you grew that business, didn't you?
15:14And then you bought it out from an investment, and you, did you float it,
15:17or you sold it into another?
15:19So it was, I did a management buyer, which is interesting when you're buying from your family.
15:25Negotiation could get quite interesting.
15:27And then I sold part, I partly sold to a private equity house.
15:32And then I did another three years with them, grew it again.
15:36And then I sold out completely.
15:38So, but I was saying, actually, in the audience today,
15:41somebody used to work for me at that very same holiday park, is here today.
15:47Oh, that was amazing.
15:48How extraordinary, brilliant stuff.
15:49Lovely.
15:49Because you retained, I think, a certain percentage,
15:52and then stayed on, grew it, and then cashed that in as well.
15:55And that was actually interesting, because everybody said to me,
15:57you're not suited to those.
15:58You are not suited to being, having anybody vaguely telling you what to do.
16:04But I think my private equity, I chose well.
16:06And I think they just, they let me do my thing, which was great.
16:09Good for you.
16:10Well done.
16:11Brilliant stuff.
16:1142 to 27.
16:13Alex in the lead for the moment.
16:14And Alex, now it's your letters game.

18:58Roy. Six. Six. Alex. Seven. Roy. Toward. Toward, yes. Doormat. Doormat. Why not? Don't treat me like a doormat. What
19:11have we got in the corner? Well, we had doormat and a wood rat. A wood rat? A wood rat.
19:17Yeah. Rat lives in the wood pile? What is a wood rat? Well, pretty much, yeah. It gathers lots and
19:21lots of wood into its nest hole and buries itself in there. I think we might have had a wood
19:27rat. They buried underneath the floor from the woodshed, from the wood cellar. Not nice. So, Alex on 55, Roy
19:3733, but now it's Alex's numbers game. Alex. Shall we go for four large this time? Let's go for four
19:43large. They've been relatively simple, so let's try and get something
19:47harder, but hopefully not impossible. Thank you, Alex. Right, four large, two small, which are nine, and oh, this could
19:54be very hard. Another nine. And 100, 75, 50, and 25. And the target, 100, oh, 106.
20:05106.
20:36Yes, Alex.
20:38106. Yes, thank you, Roy. 106. Alex.
20:42100 plus nine. 100 plus nine, 109. And then 75 over 25. Oh, well, thanks for trying, anyway. Straightforward 106.
20:52Thank you much, Roy. Yeah, similarly. Happy enough? Well done. Okay, so with the score standing at Alex on 65,
21:00Roy 43, we go into a tea time teaser, which is trade hug. And the clue, you wouldn't trade a
21:06hug from her for any amount of money. You wouldn't trade a hug from her for any amount of money.
21:24Welcome back. I left you with the clue. You wouldn't trade a hug from her for any amount of money.
21:30And the answer is daughter. Daughter. I haven't met my daughter. 65 plays 43. And Roy, your letters came.
21:41Okay. I'll start with a consonant. Thank you, Roy. Start with M. And another one. D. And another one, please.

23:08And what else have we got over there?
23:10Deborah?
23:11Getting very scientific again.
23:14Dioxane?
23:14Yes.
23:16Yep, dioxane, dioxane.
23:18It's a colourless toxic liquid used as a solvent.
23:22Anything else?
23:22Well, that's it?
23:23No, that's our seven.
23:24I think it's quite good.
23:25We'll leave it there.
23:2672 plays 43.
23:28And now another letters game, this one for Alex.
23:31Alex.
23:32Have a vowel, please.

24:36Yes, Alex.
24:37Eight.
24:37An eight.
24:38Roy?
24:39Eight.
24:39Alex?
24:40Promised.
24:41Promised, yes?
24:42Yeah, promised a single one.
24:43Both of them.
24:44Very good.
24:47APPLAUSE
24:51Well done.
24:52And in the corner, what have we got over there?
24:54Deborah and Susie.
24:55So we had promised.
24:56Yes.
24:57So then we dropped a seven, so in pens and ponders.
25:01Ponders, indeed.
25:03Pondering.
25:03Very good.
25:04Eighty plays fifty-one.
25:06Alex is there.
25:07And now, with our pencils all sharpened and our pads at the ready,
25:12it's time for Susie's Origins of Words.
25:15Susie.
25:16Well, Deborah's been talking this week about having hordes of animals at home,
25:20and the word horde is quite an interesting one.
25:22I thought it might appeal to you, Nick.
25:24You might know this story already.
25:26We use it these days to describe lots of things.
25:28We can talk about hordes of animals, people flocking to the sale in hordes.
25:32But it all goes back to Genghis Khan, leader of the Mongols.
25:37And he died in 1227, but he left his empire to his sons and his grandsons.
25:41And one of those grandsons, Batu Khan, took on the leadership of the Mongol invasion of Europe.
25:48It's something he did with great zest, great energy.
25:51His armies crossed the Volga River, and city after city was captured by them.
25:57And they were very mean people, as you probably know, Nick.
26:00Villagers were impaled, they were burned at the stake, shot at with arrows, all sorts of torture inflicted upon them.
26:08But in spite of all this bloodshed, wherever he camped, Batu set up his own incredibly gorgeous, very richly embellished
26:16tent.
26:16It was covered with embroidered silk, gilded leather, all sorts of beautiful things.
26:21And as a result, his followers called it the Sirah Ordu, or the Silken Camp.
26:26And the Poles, who'd also suffered quite badly at his hands, put an H in that ordu and made it
26:33Horda.
26:34So it was the Silken Horda, if you like.
26:37And from this name, the term Golden Hord was applied to the tent or camp of Batu.
26:42And this in turn came to mean the entire army of the Mongols.
26:45And because of the terror that they'd inspired, because it could never be forgotten, the term became just a byword
26:52for any vicious tribe, savage in appearance, just like the Mongols themselves.
26:55But of course, over time, it diluted, so now it just means a lot of people.
26:59They might be ravaging the sails, but not ravaging like the Mongols did.
27:02Brilliant stuff.
27:04Brilliant.
27:0680 pays 51, Alex in charge.
27:08And Roy, your letters game.
27:11Style game of the coincidence, please, Rachel.

32:41So, it's back to Hamilton with you in Lanarkshire and your Dundee United team.
32:50How are they doing?
32:51Well, hopefully they'll be more successful than I was today, but they're doing okay.
32:55Well done.
32:56Listen, drag this back with you, will you?
32:57That's it.
32:57And our very best wishes to you.

33:08An early night.
33:09And we shall see you tomorrow, you two.
33:11Last day tomorrow.
33:13Last day tomorrow.
33:14I've had such a good time.
33:15It's been a hard time to go.
33:16I know.
33:16But before you go today, you know, you've made lots and lots and lots of investments.
33:20But one sort of tickled my curiosity, which is called Value My Stuff.
33:24What's all that about now?
33:25Well, it was trying to step away from this sort of, this world of valuations with the
33:31really high-end stuff and actually offering valuations for stuff you've got in your attic.
33:35Get it out of your attic.
33:36You know, those things you've thought, I wonder if that's worth anything.
33:38And for a very low cost, you can get it valued.
33:41But, of course, the next stage is, so what do we do with it?
33:43And we've got a whole new website that is now a trading marketplace for these things.
33:49You know, to be able to say, well, now I know I've got this amazing thing.
33:51who out there wants it, including things like museums.
33:56You know, when they're actually running these wonderful exhibitions,
33:59they use us as a resource to go and find those very things they're looking for.
34:03So it's a lovely thing.
34:04It starts off as one thing.
34:05You must find it in business all the time, Nick.
34:07You start off with this one thing you've got and suddenly, out of that,
34:10a whole different world grows.
34:12Brilliant stuff.
34:13We'll see you tomorrow.
34:14See you tomorrow.
34:15So, Rachel, that sounds fun.
34:16I'm going to go home now.
34:17We'll all dig stuff out.
34:18What do you think?
34:19We're back to Tony Bennett's Rags to Riches.
34:21Indeed we are.
34:22We'll see you tomorrow.
34:23See you tomorrow.
34:24See you tomorrow.
34:25Same time, same place.
34:25We'll be here waiting for you.
34:27You'll be sure of it.
34:28Good afternoon.
34:55We'll be here waiting for you tomorrow.
34:58.
34:59.
34:59Amen.
