The song was published in Berlin in 1821 as part of Christoph Friedrich Bretzner's folk song collection and became popular in Württemberg, Bavaria and Tyrol. The original lyricist and composer are unknown. The song was translated to Dutch "Gij, gij, ligt mij aan't harte" and English. It is known as "Here, here deep in my bosom oder Thou, thou liv'st in this true heart" in England and "Am I not fondly thine own oder Thou, thou reign’st in this bosom" in the USA.
Context: A lover suffers from pain of unrequited love. He doubts himself and his worthiness and wonders if he could trust her. He thinks about her and wishes they were united in love.
