00:00for another week and a half or so i think the 19th is the the date of the final if
00:05i uh if i
00:06have my uh my memory serves anyways welcome back glad to have you with us today nate geary is
00:12sitting in for mike shope uh today i am the bulldog and we made it through the fourth of
00:18july weekend which means we made it through july 1st which means we made it through the nhl draft
00:22yeah we made it through the nhl trade window which is usually at its most active around all
00:28of those events and here we sit on july 7th and normally i would feel almost a hundred percent
00:39confident in saying this is it close it up yeah my team's on the floor coach uh we're all we're
00:47all
00:47set here but i think mike mike has made the same point i mentioned greg wischinski made to me
00:52yesterday said dylan larkin hasn't been traded jason robertson situation is not settled yes he's filed
00:57for arbitration but he doesn't have a contract yet and dallas may still want to move him i'm also not
01:03unconvinced that the leo carlson thing isn't going to spurn like like more ducks to do something or if
01:10like or somebody else right like there was reporting at the time the leo carlson um offer sheet from
01:17philadelphia to carlson uh i think that was friday and um there was word right away that there were as
01:25many as four teams that were sort of in touch with carlson's camp that were pondering a move
01:30and like now there aren't you know 20 or even maybe three or four leo carlson's out there to offer
01:38sheet so maybe you know him being a target you know a team isn't ready to pivot to someone else
01:45and try the same tactic but maybe they are um so maybe that if there's a domino effect of offer
01:53sheets great even if just this one causes this what does philadelphia do if they don't get that
01:59do they go big are they suddenly engaged in dylan hunter or dylan larkin conversation and does that
02:06break something loose um so like the big names are still out there larkin robertson i i don't know
02:13it sort of feels to me like toronto might be safely keeping matthew nice at this point but who knows
02:19hellebuck is still the one yeah that i think um i feel like i heard the most about the sabers
02:26attention to hellebuck um and very little else of real there was a little dalliance i think um around
02:34the draft with jason robertson because they were holding the fourth and 20th pick and like wow maybe
02:39there's a team that can go you know swing for the fences with a big trade there and that didn't
02:43happen um but hellebuck has felt like to me like the most realistic target and i still feel i elliot
02:55friedman said as much on his um his final 32 thoughts podcast of the season like he he's going dark
03:03anyway i guess you know emergency reporting and podcasting notwithstanding if big things do happen
03:09but at the end of his most recent and i said last podcast of the trade slash free agent season
03:17he made
03:18a point say i still think something's going to happen with connor hellebuck that there's a there's
03:22a divorce imminent there like he he wants to leave he's not rattling loudly and making a lot of noise
03:28about it but the jets wanted to solve that situation so i mean i never was like super into
03:36the idea of trading for hellebuck but i'm i'm of the mind that i do think yarmo has played this
03:45really
03:45well because i think it could have been he could have been i think maybe not pushed to but could
03:52have
03:52convinced himself that let's just trade the fourth let's just let's just make this we have to make a
03:58move and i just think it looks like the jets overplayed their hand a little bit um and right
04:07now it's between carolina and it looks like carolina buffer the only two teams in on hellebuck and it's
04:12to me obvious that if you're if you're the jets you want what the sabers have i mean in terms
04:18of
04:18prospects and what they can give back young young pieces um it's the sabers so i think he's found
04:25himself in a situation where if he does get hellebuck it'll be for a i think a a lot less
04:31than what he
04:31would have done five days ago um so i do think that's good work i think if a trade happens
04:36that that
04:37has to almost be right yeah right that that that that would be the case that he we waited him
04:41out i
04:42even wondered you know because you know um we've been in here mike and myself for
04:4820 24 23 uh of these july 1st uh-huh and there's a lot of scar tissue there because uh
05:01yes not much
05:03happens usually right very lonely days sitting in here trade deadline in the nhl and free agency day
05:10in the nhl and i i for sure would have been i i don't think even just tempted is the
05:20word i i think
05:21i i almost assuredly would have treated the fourth overall pick like i found money on the street which
05:28is dumb i i recognize that it's dumb but i would have wanted to do something to make my team
05:35better
05:36i'm i've made a great trade to get rid of bow and byram because i had to do that i
05:42did the best i
05:42could in the tux situation you know short of paying him what he wanted which they were never going to
05:47do and but okay but show me how you're improving that's the that's the yeah that's the question like
05:54i also like the kids right i also think the goaltending was excellent it was the strength of the team
06:01last year i know what happened in the playoffs but that's we're talking about 13 games versus 82
06:07and so i don't need to do a goalie trade like connor hellebuck myself either what happens to me nate
06:15is
06:16the the longer you go without making a significant ad and the more i feel like i'm watching other teams
06:25around me take their swings and i worry about when am i gonna when's my move like well i didn't
06:31really want to do this goalie trade but i guess if it's all i can do i guess sure where's
06:36the goalie
06:36trade i but to me i i'm with you in that like i don't know i don't think a trade
06:43for a to to make
06:45a trade makes a lot of sense to me um he's what 34 33 34 hellebuck um and i mean
06:53look i mean freddie
06:53anderson had the season he had was 36 37 years old last year um you know uh bobrofsky just signed
07:00he's 37 uh so to me it's not like you can't get a couple of seasons of elite level goaltending
07:07if you decide to make this trade for hellebuck now um but you know i think we all got into
07:13a
07:13situation with with tuck i was listening to the morning show today and and i think there's a lot
07:17of ways you could have convinced yourself that alex tuck and keeping him around um made this made the
07:23most sense to me and if the sabers really weren't willing to go to eight but they were at seven
07:28and it was
07:2810 and maybe a little more than 10 i don't really know what the difference of the eighth year would
07:33have been to me if that was gonna i know i know what you mean and if you are the
07:38sabers and tuck
07:39signs for 10 5 and you say what about 10 2 5 on eight years and the difference here i'm
07:46not saying
07:46that he wouldn't take it but i think people would have looked at it and said he left his the
07:51team that
07:51he rooted for as a kid for 250 like okay it's sort of it's it's enough to make you wonder
07:57how
07:58the sabers really were about wanting to get it done yeah right because yeah i think the same way like
08:05if they really wanted to do it then they could have bridged that gap somehow some ways if you're
08:12already that far down the road okay just suck it up and but i think that's what that's what makes
08:19me
08:19wonder like did they have reason to think that pivots were readily available right we will be
08:28active in the trade market and but then they still ended up not liking the prices so what they've done
08:35is they didn't like the price of anything so they're not buying anything yeah which you can't
08:40really do in pro sports and hold your head up and say we're still working toward winning the stanley cup
08:46like you you gotta do you gotta do things they don't have a bad contract on the books either
08:51they're there no that's right they're not in a position where they're like we can't add another
08:55bad contract right they're just not but i mean they've got the skinner buyout that's still hanging
08:59around i think that's the one thing that put them in a situation this year where it was like
09:03well we we need benson on the long-term deal now they shipped out bo byram and i think where
09:10i get to
09:10is i don't know that there was really a scenario for me where i was going to be in on
09:15them keeping
09:16that fourth overall pick and using it on a player i that if i'm gonna say that i'm frustrated in
09:22one
09:22area it's that they could have moved a high quality asset that wasn't a player i mean in theory was
09:28going to be bo byram but like right you weren't moving anyone else off of your roster in that number
09:34four overall pick and i've heard paul say this a lot and i do subscribe to this thinking which is
09:38the fourth overall pick is whoever you selected if that team wanted him or they wanted somebody
09:44else all you're doing is giving them the choice to make that selection i don't i mean i don't think
09:49the sabers gonna move out their fourth overall pick they just drafted but i i don't know i'm i'm of
09:55the point that i was disappointed that pick was used yeah i i'm disappointed both were used i i thought
10:00both packaging both of those up and going to get a legitimate player and then you can talk about
10:05smaller trades with with quinn or mcleod if those are guys you're trying to move out um i just you
10:11know i mean i'm glad they didn't use one of them on like you know vinnie trochek or something but
10:15i
10:16still am of the mind i'm like this is i i can always get behind we want to stay competitive
10:23now we think
10:23the quote window is open but doesn't it feel a little exactly what the bills do right now which is
10:32we don't want to be the rams we don't want to put ourselves in position where we sure we want
10:39to
10:39keep the window open as long as we can right but what good is the window being open if you
10:44never get
10:45to fly through it right right right yeah so that's my only thought is it and that was the first
10:52thing
10:52that came to my mind when you let to me bo byram wasn't signing here and even if he was
10:58you were
10:58never giving him 12 and a half million never right um that that trade makes all the sense in the
11:03world
11:04to me but i think that the the tuck thing it had it automatically brought me back to we don't
11:11want
11:11to be the rams when you're brandon bean and look at the position they're in now which is they haven't
11:16gotten to a super bowl and their quarterback's going to be 30 years old this year and the general
11:21manager is already through his first coach now he's on to his second coach and now there's a lot of
11:25pressure and getting through and making the playoffs and and changing people's players around
11:32the league's perspective of you is a really important start for this team but the next move
11:37to me is the most important move for yarmo because they've got a u.s hockey player on this team
11:43and
11:43everyone else seems to be wanting to get out of canada and wanting to get out of these small markets
11:49i've got to use it while i've got it and tege is still in his prime and helenius looked the
11:54part
11:54in a big way in the playoffs and so did oseland and maybe we're all overreacting because you know
12:01yuri kulik is going to be this team's number one center and he's a 30 goal scorer that did that
12:06played
12:06seven games last year and that could be totally viable i think they believe that by the way i think
12:13they believe i have thoughts on that that i hope i remember to get to after the break let's let's
12:18take
12:18a break 803-0550 he's nate geary and for mike today i am the bulldog lines are open 803-0550
12:24is the number we'll get to some calls too after this on wgr
