Countdown - Season 94 Episode 4 -Episode 4 engsub fullepisode🌸 Secret Engagement
Transcript
00:30Hello, everybody. It's Thursday, the 2nd of July.
00:34Thank you so much for being on our radar once again
00:37as we journey into our little universe of letters and numbers,
00:41knowing when it comes to the longest words
00:43that the truth is out there.
00:45Well, actually, it's over in Dixonry Corner.
00:48She's somewhat of an alien of a lexicographer, our Susie Dent,
00:52and it's been a close encounter all week
00:54with the brilliant John Colshaw.
00:56And while dealing with all unexplained numerical phenomena,
01:01it is our Rachel Riley.
01:03Happy UFO Day.
01:05Everybody. So, Rachel, obvious question.
01:07Do you believe the truth is out there?
01:09I think, you know, sensible scientists think
01:12that life is more probable than not out there.
01:15We're not likely to be alone in the universe,
01:17given the size of the universe.
01:18Why haven't they bothered to stop to say hello if they're out there?
01:21What do you think they think as they fly past?
01:24It's a subject that fascinates me.
01:27I am convinced that alien civilisations exist
01:29and have probably visited the Earth for thousands of years.
01:33Much as we think we're very technological,
01:35we probably couldn't detect, you know,
01:38whatever they may show to us.
01:40But it fascinates me.
01:41I remember sitting in the back garden at night
01:44and just this, like, pink object just, like, right across,
01:47and it was a balloon from a birthday party next door.
01:50But, you know, I just thought I'd mention it.
01:51Mystery solved.
01:52A lot of them are those things.
01:54Identified. Tick that one off.
01:55The depressing thing is, Rach,
01:57my genuine suspicion is quite a few other civilisations
02:02have taken a little look in the way past and went,
02:05nah, you're all right.
02:06Well, I do eye my youngest suspiciously.
02:08It's very strange.
02:11Very probable there's a lot of alien life on this planet.
02:14Well, we've been keeping an eye
02:15on our first phenomenon of this series,
02:18Karen Pearson with seven wins,
02:20looking to become our first Octo-Champ of the series,
02:2394 with four wins just before we had our series,
02:2693 at finals.
02:28And, of course, our current phenomenal champion, Patrick,
02:31he'd been on before and lost.
02:32Same with you, just remind us of that first time.
02:35Yep, I came on in 2005, 21 years ago,
02:39and I came up against a fantastic player called Richard Heald,
02:43who absolutely annihilated me,
02:45104 to 57.
02:48Seared into my brain.
02:49You remember that score,
02:51but I bet you you couldn't tell me all your scores for your seven wins.
02:53No idea.
02:54That's how we know she's a true champion, right?
02:57But can you become an Octo-Champ?
02:58To do that, you have to be Paul McCormick,
03:01who joins us from Glasgow.
03:02Born in Glasgow, lives in Glasgow.
03:04How are you, sir?
03:06I'm very well, thank you, Colin.
03:07Very well indeed.
03:08But travel the world, you know?
03:09Travel the world.
03:11You go from the tundra to the Sahara.
03:15Do you purposely seek out, just like,
03:17I don't want to go to Tenerife for a week?
03:19If there are opportunities to go somewhere a little bit more interesting,
03:22then, yeah, that seems to me.
03:23I previously worked for an airline,
03:25so the opportunity was always there.
03:27Yes.
03:27But, you know, if someone says,
03:29let's go to the Sahara for a couple of days,
03:31then you're not saying no to that, are you?
03:33Excellent.
03:34Listen, Paul and Karen,
03:36we don't want to see too many X-Files, do we,
03:38in these letters that you're picking,
03:39but good luck to both of you.
03:44Karen?
03:44Hi, Rachel.
03:45Hi, Karen.
03:46Could we start with a consonant, please?
03:48Start today with N.
03:50And another.
03:52G.
03:53And another.
03:56L.
03:57And a vowel, please.
03:59A.
04:00And another.
04:01E.
04:02And another.
04:03I.
04:04And a consonant.
04:06N.
04:09And another.
04:11D.
04:13And a final consonant, please.
04:18Final T.
04:20At home and in the studio, let's play Kind Down.
04:23And a consonant.
04:40And a consonant.
04:41And a consonant.
04:42And a consonant.
04:42And a consonant.
04:42And a consonant.
04:43And a consonant.
04:53Karen? Eight. And Paul? I will try an eight. Good on you.
04:57Karen? Delating. Fantastic. And Paul? Taglined.
05:02Delating, absolutely brilliant, reporting against someone
05:04if they've committed a crime. There is no tagline, I'm afraid.
05:07Tagline is there, but it's two words. OK. I'm sorry.
05:10What else can we add, JC? Couple of sevens. Tangled and tingled.
05:15They're for seven, but we couldn't top that wonderful eight.
05:18Out of this world from Karen as we go again, Paul, share letters.
05:21Good afternoon, Rachel. May I start with a vowel, please?
05:24You may indeed start with E.
05:27And another vowel. O. And a third.
05:31I. And a consonant, please.
05:34S. And another consonant.
05:37R. One more. B.
05:41And a vowel. U.
05:43A consonant. T. And then finally another consonant, please.
05:48And lastly R. Excellent. Thirty seconds.
05:51Good.
06:06All.
06:20A consonant.
06:22Paul? A seven. And for you, Karen? Eight.
06:26Oh! Paul, the seven. Bruiser.
06:29Back-to-back eights from our bruiser. What have you got?
06:32Routier. Yes, Routier with the S on, but with the French twist.
06:35Very good. They are long-distance lorry drivers in France,
06:40but they can also be a member...
06:41Well, they were members of bands of mercenaries in the Middle Ages.
06:44There you go. Can we add anything?
06:46Another lovely eight in the form of burritos.
06:50Yes! There you go.
06:51Right, numbers for the first time today could change very quickly, Paul.
06:55Karen, you're choosing these.
06:56We'll have one large and five small, please, Rachel.
06:59One large. You're moving away from the three large choices you made yesterday.
07:03That's just one. Safer territory, potentially.
07:07Five, three, seven.
07:09Three, one. And the larger one, 100.
07:12And the target, 333.
07:15333. Numbers up.
07:16You don't think so.
07:17One big difference.
07:20Two big numbers.
07:34You know everyone.
07:39Natureúsica
07:39This is a
07:39Three Vegas Pizza.
07:39These are places information on the island Monica.
07:40The third ship.
07:40You know them in the island?
07:44Yeah, that's a very quiet thing.
07:45You know they allそうだ question.
07:46All the threes. Karen? I think I have 3-3-3.
07:50And what about you, Paul? Yep, 3-3-3. Off you go, Karen.
07:52No, I've gone wrong, sorry. Oh, it's a big one for Paul.
07:55I told you I could change this quick. Off you go.
07:573 times 100 is 300. Yep.
08:007 times 5 is 35.
08:043 minus 1 is 2. And if you add 300, 35 minus 2.
08:09Perfect. Ten points. There you go.
08:11APPLAUSE
08:14The tea-time teaser is Lone Rose.
08:16Lone Rose is in L-O-N-E.
08:19He rose to open the bowling, but his first ball was way off the mark.
08:22He rose to open the bowling, but his first ball was way off the mark.
08:35APPLAUSE
08:42Welcome back. Nice one that. Wasn't it? Loosener was the answer.
08:45Your first ball or your first shot in the frame of snooker.
08:48Maybe your first little tipple on a night out.
08:51And we've had a few Looseners here.
08:53Two letters rounds and a numbers round.
08:5412 to go, so let's get down to it.
08:56Paul, you're up again.
08:57Could I have a consonant, please, Rachel?
08:59Thank you, Paul.
09:00S.
09:01And another.
09:03Another.
09:03T.
09:04And a vowel.
09:06E.
09:07And another vowel, please.
09:09U.
09:09And a consonant.
09:11M.
09:12Another vowel.
09:14I.
09:15A consonant.
09:17C.
09:18A consonant.
09:20W.
09:21And finally, a vowel, please.
09:26Thanks, Rich.
09:28Thanks, Rich.
09:32MUSIC PLAYS
09:32MUSIC PLAYS
09:34MUSIC PLAYS
09:55MUSIC PLAYS
09:58Paul, I'll stick with a five.
10:00And for you, Karen?
10:01Six.
10:01And a six. Paul, what have you got?
10:03Music.
10:04And the six?
10:05Miss Q.
10:06And Miss Q, we just mentioned snooker, and there it is.
10:09Yeah, absolutely fine.
10:10Anything else from Mr Colshaw?
10:13Yeah, seven in there, Colin.
10:15Caesium.
10:16There's a seven.
10:17Caesium.
10:18Caesium the day.
10:19Caesium, yes.
10:20It's a soft and silvery metal, extremely reactive.
10:23It's going to be a metal one way or the other, wasn't it?
10:26There you go, 22, 10.
10:28And Karen, it's your letters.
10:30Could we start with a consonant, please?
10:32Thank you, Karen.
10:33P.
10:34And another.
10:35T.
10:37And another.
10:39M.
10:40And a vowel, please.
10:42O.
10:43And another.
10:45E.
10:46And another.
10:47O.
10:48And a consonant.
10:52Q.
10:53Yeah.
10:54And another.
10:57D.
10:58And a consonant, please.
11:03Lastly, T.
11:05Here we go.
11:07Here we go.
11:07Here we go.
11:20Here we go.
11:37OK, Karen, give me a number.
11:39Just six.
11:39And for you, Paul?
11:40Also just a six.
11:41Yeah, what have you got there, Karen?
11:43Potted.
11:43Yes, and for you, Paul?
11:45Moorchants.
11:46Yes, there are a potload of sixes there.
11:49I won't accept any more.
11:51Is there a seven hidden in there?
11:53I don't believe so.
11:54Not that we could find.
11:55Not that we found.
11:55There's a very cute six.
11:58Pooted.
11:59Pooted.
11:59Yes, which I think kids poot, don't they, more than adults, I would say.
12:05Right, 28 plus 16.
12:07Numbers very good for your first time around.
12:09Let's go again and you're choosing.
12:10Could I have one large and five small, please, Rachel?
12:12Play it safe.
12:13Can indeed.
12:15Exactly.
12:16One large and five little.
12:18These are your tactics.
12:19And you shall have five, three, three, nine, one, and 50.
12:26With the target to reach 881.
12:29Eight, eight, one.
12:30Numbers up.
12:31The target to reach 891.
12:34The target to reach 891.
12:36The target to reach 891.
13:018, 8, 1. Paul?
13:03Nowhere near. Oh, Karen?
13:05Nowhere near.
13:06Rachel is still deep in thought over there.
13:10I reckon you're in and around the basket here, aren't you?
13:13So, how are you getting on?
13:14Yeah, I've got one away, so you have to leave it with me.
13:16Yeah, ridiculously difficult.
13:18It's a good time to release that pressure
13:21and have our daily chat with our Dictionary Corner guests.
13:24John, we're talking money today,
13:25and not really in a stressful way, thankfully.
13:27No, no.
13:29Sometimes we have those characters we impersonate
13:32who are among our favourites at any one particular time,
13:35and a great, great favourite of mine right now
13:37because he's so instantly recognisable
13:41and he's got this way of delivering
13:43which is so distinctive and quite intense,
13:45and if you exaggerate that a little bit,
13:47it makes it very comical in a rather lovable way.
13:50And this is Martin Lewis, money-saving expert.
13:53Yes.
13:53He's a dream for impersonators,
13:55and in the recent Dead Ringers tour,
13:58I always would so look forward
14:00to when the Martin Lewis sketch came on
14:02because the audiences really went for him.
14:05They really went for him in a very lovable way.
14:08And I think it's just that sort of evangelical,
14:12very driven way,
14:13and the sketch is fun to do as well.
14:15It allows you to really step on the accelerator.
14:18Stop everything, help us arrive.
14:20If you want to make your spending go further,
14:21all you do, first of all,
14:22you take out a 0% interest credit card.
14:24You put the money from that into a high-interest saver.
14:26You put the interest into an account with cash back
14:27and then you speak to that to get a switching fee.
14:29You put the fee into the interest,
14:30interest into the cash back,
14:31cash back into the interest,
14:32round, round, round, round, round, boom!
14:36When you've got your breath back,
14:38he's such a favourite like that.
14:40The audience really go for it.
14:42It's very forceful straight in.
14:43Do you get what I mean?
14:44Those larger-than-life characters that you kind of...
14:47You think, I don't really have to do much here,
14:48I just need to nail the voice.
14:50But that is it, the intensity like that
14:51and the look that could sort of burn a hole in a steel door,
14:55that kind of thing.
14:57He's a big favourite at the moment.
14:58Brilliant.
14:59Thank you very much, mate.
15:04Now, forget money-saving experts.
15:06I just need my mathematical expert.
15:08Now, was that long enough?
15:108, 8, 1.
15:11Yeah, once you've got an idea and you follow this through.
15:14With the 15, if you say 3 times 5 is 15,
15:18then you can add 9 to 50 for 59,
15:21times those together for 885,
15:24with a 3 and a 1 left over for 8, 8, 1.
15:27Brilliant.
15:27Well done, well done.
15:30Fantastic.
15:31Now, Karen's looking to become the first doctoral champ
15:34of Series 94.
15:35She can do it today.
15:3728 points against Paul's 16, just 12 in it.
15:41And, Karen, age your letters.
15:42I'll start with the consonant, please.
15:44Thank you, Karen.
15:45F and another.
15:48N and another.
15:51S and another.
15:55L and a vowel, please.
16:07And a vowel, please.
16:11A final I.
16:12Half a minute.
16:14Let's do it.
16:15Let's do it.
16:15Let's do it.
16:17Let's do it.

16:33Let's do it.
16:34Let's do it.
16:35Let's do it.
16:35Let's do it.
16:36Let's do it.
16:36Let's do it.
16:37Let's do it.
16:38Let's do it.
16:41Let's do it.
16:45Karen?
16:46Just a five.
16:47Paul?
16:48A six, I think.
16:49Karen, what's the five?
16:51Flush.
16:51Paul, are you flush with a six?
16:54Unless?
16:55It's one S.
16:56Oh, one S.
16:57Unfortunately.
16:58This is written down.
16:59So, with the right letters, anything above a five?
17:02Well, there was a six in there that appeared over here.
17:06Sinful.
17:07Oh, yes, of course.
17:08Was it for six?
17:09Sinful.
17:09It was solid sinful.
17:11Delightful it was.
17:12Well done.
17:13Bit of sin will get you six.
17:14Everything else is just fives and below.
17:16So, tricky round.
17:18Often means the letters are a bit more generous next time around.
17:21But not always, Paul.
17:22Let's find out.
17:22Could I start with a consonant, please?
17:26Thank you, Paul.
17:28R.
17:29And another.
17:30C.
17:31And a vowel.
17:34E.
17:34And another vowel, please.
17:36O.

17:46Another consonant.

18:09And another vowel, please.
18:09And another vowel, please.
18:09And another vowel, please.
18:09And another vowel, please.
18:09And another vowel, please.
18:10And another vowel, please.
18:10And another vowel, please.
18:10And another vowel, please.
18:10And another vowel, please.
18:11And another vowel, please.
18:12And another vowel, please.
18:13And another vowel, please.
18:13And another vowel, please.
18:14And another vowel, please.
18:15And another vowel, please.
18:23Paul. Six.
18:25Yes, Karen. I'll stick with the six.
18:27Paul. Codger.
18:29Codger. I'm on about...
18:31A pair of codgers.
18:33There you go. Yes, indeed, it is.
18:35Which you absolutely are not.
18:37Dictionary corner.
18:38Yes, a relative there. Lodger also there
18:41for another six.
18:43Let's get back to the numbers.
18:45And, Karen, you're choosing...
18:47Let's have two large, please, Rachel.
18:50Why not?
18:50Two large and four little.
18:53Your last choice for a while, and they are...
18:55Two, six,
18:57four, five,
18:5950 and 75.
19:01And the target?
19:03537. 537.
19:05Numbers up.
19:06Alright, well, let's see.
19:33All right.
19:36We're looking for 5-3-7, Karen.
19:405-3-5.
19:415-3-5, two away.
19:42Will it be good enough, Paul?
19:43No, we're near.
19:44It could be good enough.
19:45Seven points if you're right, Karen.
19:47Five plus two is seven.
19:50Yep.
19:50Times 75 is hopefully 5-2-5.
19:52It is.
19:53Six plus four is ten.
19:55And add it on.
19:56Two away.
19:575-3-7, Rachel.
19:59Yes, with this one.
20:0175 plus 50 is 125.
20:04Six plus two is eight.
20:07Add those together for 133.
20:10Times that by four for 532.
20:13And add on the 5-5-3-7.
20:14Magic.
20:16APPLAUSE
20:17And that's how you get the big ten points.
20:19On the score, though, Karen increases her lead by another 7-46-22.
20:24We could have our first octo-champ of the series when we return.
20:28So don't go anywhere after this Tea Time teaser.
20:31Omit curd.
20:32Omit curd.
20:33C-U-R-D.
20:35Perfectly positioned for an overhead smash.
20:37This one's good for Wimbledon.
20:39Perfectly positioned for the overhead smash.
20:57Hello again.
20:58Yes, good time for this one, isn't it?
21:00The smash we were looking for was a mid-court smash.
21:03A mid-court smash.
21:04Paul McCormick needs a little bit of the old countdown serving.
21:07Volley to get back into this.
21:09Do not worry, let's get your letters.
21:11Could I have a vowel, please, Rachel?
21:13Thank you, Paul.
21:13A.

22:03EUROLI
22:03OK, Paul.
22:04Seven.
22:05Yes, and for you, Karen?
22:06Yeah, risky seven.
22:08Paul, what's your seven?
22:09Calmest.
22:10Can Karen match you?
22:11Malate.
22:13Malate, yes, so malate, if it's still in the dictionary,
22:16which I think it is, is a salt or ester of malic acid,
22:19which you get from unripe apples.
22:22There you go.
22:23Seven points each, and John Culshaw, are we adding anything?
22:26OK, well, there's a couple of eights,
22:29but rather handsome eights that have appeared over here.
22:31Escalate.
22:32And this word sounds like a product.
22:35That's your casemate.
22:37Oh, you casemate.
22:38Yes, it's an armoured enclosure of some kind,
22:41so either for guns on a warship or in old castles,
22:44it would be a small room in the wall of a fortress
22:46with little openings or loopholes, as they were called,
22:49from which arrows could be fired.
22:51Goodness me.
22:51Two eights in dictionary corner,
22:52two sevens for champion and challenger,
22:55so it's as you were.
22:56As we go back to those letters with Karen.
22:58Start with the consonant, please.
23:00Thank you, Karen.
23:01And another.
23:03R
23:04And another.
23:06T
23:06And a vowel, please.

23:20And a consonant, please.
23:26Lastly, P.
23:27And kind down.
23:29MUSIC PLAYS
23:58Time's up, Karen.
23:59Eight.
24:00An eight for you and Paul.
24:02I'll try a risky eight.
24:04Good on you.
24:04Karen.
24:05Reputing.
24:06Reputing from you and Paul.
24:08Uprating.
24:10Uprating.
24:10We'll be all right with that.
24:11We absolutely are.
24:12Yeah, to uprate is to increase the value of something.
24:14Very good.
24:15Yes, we've had that a few times of late.
24:19Absolutely.
24:20So, two eights.
24:21Well done.
24:22Fantastic job, Paul.
24:23But, Karen, matching you there.
24:25And unless we have a nine, you've done as best as you can do.
24:28Well, there's another eight, actually.
24:30Tapering.
24:31Yes.
24:31Also in that collection.
24:32One of those very nice rounds.
24:34And with four more to go, we get our origins and words for today.
24:39Susie, where are we heading?
24:40We are heading to something that you messaged me about in preparation for today's show, actually.
24:46Because we were talking about UFOs and you messaged me to say, what is the proper plural of phenomenon?
24:54Yeah.
24:54You were thinking phenomenons doesn't sound right.
24:57No, when I was coming up with words connected to aliens for my NAF opening link, it just didn't look
25:03right when I...
25:03It just didn't sound right in my head.
25:05Yes.
25:06In a way, sometimes you just know it doesn't follow the proper logic.
25:09Exactly.
25:10And one thing I should have checked is whether...
25:13Because language moves on and plurals move on as well,
25:16is whether phenomenons are listed alongside phenomena,
25:19which I think is the plural that most people will know.
25:22And it isn't, actually.
25:24The word phenomenon comes from Greek and its plural form is always phenomena.
25:30And it is all about things appearing in view, which is very appropriate for UFOs.
25:36But it's just one of many, many plurals that we struggle with
25:39because obviously we're not as well versed in the classics as maybe school children were, you know, a long time
25:44ago.
25:45In fact, I was reading something where it was an alternative sense of the word C-A-V-E,
25:53not cave, but cave.
25:54And apparently this was regularly used by school children only 75 years ago,
25:59meaning beware, a teacher's coming.
26:01So that's how they just knew Latin and they often conversed in it.
26:04Not the case today.
26:05So quite often we do struggle.
26:07And the one that a lot of people struggle with is octopus.
26:11And because it sounds Latin, we talk about octopi in the plural.
26:17And because octopuses sounds a bit sort of, you know, odd and maybe a little bit illiterate,
26:23but actually octopus is of Greek origin, which means that the plural is octopodes, not octopi.
26:31But octopuses is the one that most people will use.
26:34And I think if you use octopodes, you will be insufferable at a dinner party.
26:38So I would definitely avoid that one.
26:40And finally, an unusual one, because we all know that the plural of child is children,
26:43but actually it's a double plural.
26:45We've kind of over-pluralised it because in Middle English,
26:49children was already the plural, but we added an N on for good measure.
26:52So it just goes to show we've been getting plurals wrong for a very long time.
26:56No kidding.
26:56Can I ask you very quickly, because it's important for today,
26:59what is the plural of octochamp?
27:01Is it octochai or octochamps or octochump?
27:06Well, I like all of those.
27:07Yeah, I think let's just stick the S on.
27:09Thank you very much, Susie.
27:12Well, we might have a first octochump of the series.
27:16Karen's got her seven wins.
27:18She's 61-37 off.
27:20It's one of those far enough away to relax.
27:23It really isn't with four rounds to go.
27:25As long as Paul stays focused one big round and it's a different ballgame.
27:29So off you go.
27:30Could I start with a vowel, please, Rachel?
27:32Thank you, Paul.
27:34A.
27:34And a second.
27:35I.
27:36And a third.
27:37O.
27:38And a consonant.
27:40S.
27:41Another vowel, please.
27:43E.
27:44And a consonant.
27:45R.
27:46And another consonant.
27:48Y.
27:49Another consonant, please.
27:51T.
27:52And a final consonant.
27:53And a final N.
27:56Let's os play.
27:57T.
27:58B faster.
27:58Years a Tonic.
28:01To be seen.
28:02One.
28:17Under 스트ように.
28:18And a consonant.
28:19And a consonant.
28:19And a consonant.
28:20So will a consonant.
28:21And that anotherיertainly.
28:23So will it be done?
28:23THEY CONFER
28:28Paul? An eight. And Karen? Eight. Paul?
28:33Notaries. Notaries and...? And notarise.
28:36OK, fine, he doesn't need to sign off on it then. Brilliant.
28:39Over to dictionary corner. Slightly different there, eh?
28:42Yeah, both absolutely fine.
28:44All right, eight points each. What have we got left?
28:47A Y? Yeah. We're done, aren't we?
28:49Well, we've got one more eight. We do.
28:51It's a tyrosine. Tyrosine.
28:54It's a flammable liquid of some kind.
28:56It sounds like it's an amino acid,
28:59which is really important in synthesising hormones in the body.
29:03Right, we have three rounds left to go.
29:06Karen, this is where you could seal the deal.
29:09Your letters and last letters of the show.
29:11A consonant, please, Rachel. Thank you, Karen.
29:14F. And another.
29:17W. And another.
29:18P. And another.
29:22S. And a vowel, please.
29:27I. And another.
29:29O. And another.
29:34U. And another vowel, please.
29:38I. And a consonant, please.
29:42I. And another.
29:43I. And another.
30:13A challenge for sure, Karen? Five.
30:16And for you, Paul? Also just a five.
30:18Karen? Pious. Yes, and Paul's going to pass it over.
30:22Also pious. Same again.
30:24Five points. He's first Doctor Chubb of Series 94!
30:27CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
30:30How do you get on in Dick Street Corner?
30:32Yes, pious. Pious, pious, pious, pious.
30:35And there's still 20 more points for you, Paul.
30:37Should you choose to grab them, final numbers.
30:39Let's go six small, please, Rachel.
30:41Why not? Let's have a little bit of fun.
30:43Let her hair down and choose a tough one.
30:47They are ten, eight, five, seven, five and six.
30:53And the target to reach 583.
30:57583, last numbers.
31:285-8-3, Paul McCormack?
31:315-8-5.
31:33Two away. Karen? 5-8-7.
31:35Four away. Go on, Paul, for seven.
31:38Five plus five is ten.
31:40Yeah. Multiplied by ten.
31:42100. Multiplied by six.
31:44600.
31:45Subtract the seven, subtract the eight.
31:46And the seven and the eight, which you haven't used for two above.
31:50And Rachel's going to take us home.
31:51Yes.
31:53If you say seven times five is 35.
31:57Add eight for 43.
31:59Add ten for 53.
32:02And then six plus the second five gives you 11.
32:05And times them together.
32:06Product of two primes, 583.
32:08Yes, brilliant.
32:10APPLAUSE
32:12Excellent stuff.
32:1374-57.
32:16Thursday afternoon.
32:18And Karen and Paul, we still ten points to hand out.
32:2157 is a good losing score.
32:2467 is a wonderful one.
32:26So let's see what you can do, Paul.
32:27Finger on the buzzer.
32:28Karen, it's your last Countdown Round, at least for the time being.
32:33Let's reveal today's Countdown Conundrum.

33:18Paul, how's your day been?
33:19I mean, you walk into an OctoChump, it's just the luck of the draw, isn't it?
33:22It was fabulous until I met Karen.
33:25And then it all went a little bit pear-shaped.
33:27But, yeah, a fabulous day, all told.
33:29Anyone who's thinking about applying really should.
33:31Our first OctoChump series at 94.
33:33Now, do you believe?
33:35No, still not.
33:35Still feel like a fraud.
33:37Maybe that's the right attitude because you're absolutely not.
33:40Three centuries in there.
33:41And what I love is when you were put under pressure,
33:44you always responded and came back.
33:46So, we need a nickname for you.
33:48Anyone, any ideas?
33:49Producer Damien has quite a good one.
33:52Shall we let Damien have it?
33:53Because we all know what happened.
33:55For people that don't know, you killed Tufty on us.
33:58You got rid of the Tufty campaign, the safety campaign.
34:01So, as Tufty was a squirrel,
34:03you're going to be Karen the Nutcracker Pearson.
34:06That's going to be your nickname.
34:08So, there you go.
34:09And tough luck if you don't like it.
34:11Karen, brilliant.
34:12Well done you.
34:13Thank you very much.
34:15Two challenges tomorrow, John Susie.
34:17See you then.
34:18See you then.
34:19And that's it for today.
34:20And I always finish by saying, same time, same place.
34:23But actually, slightly different time tomorrow
34:25because of the Formula One.
34:26So, check your listing.
34:27But still, the same place.
