Transcript
00:05This weather is incredible at the moment.
00:08Looks like we're gonna get smashed with a storm any second now.
00:12Caden's over on the pad there.
00:17I've got it.
00:21About 900 bucks.
00:25Have a look at that.
00:27Jeez, we're about to get smashed.
00:30It's actually starting to hail.
00:32Caden, get back to the car, mate.
00:34This is not good.
00:39Get out.
00:39Seriously, it's time to go.
00:41This lightning's getting worse.
00:43I've got to pack this up right now.
00:44There's nothing I can do.
00:45The last thing I'd want, this is getting struck.
00:48The lightning's so close.
00:49Caden, hurry up.
00:52It can't be out of weather like this.
01:09Look at that.
01:10Raining over here and not too bad right here.
01:14Blue sky over here.
01:17Incredible.
01:19This is the weather in Victoria.
01:21It's 50 seasons in one.
01:23We've got to get some dirt out of that hole.
01:26So, we'll see how we go.
01:29We'll try and keep the gold rolling in.
01:34The weather's finally cleared up.
01:36Now we've got the operation going.
01:38We're taking dirt to the pad.
01:40Hopefully, we can really kick into gear and get as much gold out of the ground while we can.
01:46Mate, we're going to be up against it this week.
01:48We've got rain and hail at times.
01:51At the end of the day, mate, we're after 200 ounces this season.
01:55We've got 114 and a half ounces so far.
01:58That is half a million dollars.
02:00We might as well be half a million dollars in the red because we've got a half a million dollars
02:03to go.
02:04We get 200 ounces this season that allow us to supersize the operation.
02:09And we can really get some gold in.
02:14Where you digging now, you're pretty close to where we found that 38-ouncer.
02:18That's what we're looking for, mate.
02:20Something like that.
02:21In that case, stop chatting here and we'll get straight into it.
02:25Get going.
02:26I can hear that all day there, mate, but I want to see it out.
02:29Ha!
02:31Oh, the church!
02:32That's a $200,000 piece of gold!
02:36The Poseidon crew, mine boss Brent Shannon, his 18-year-old son Caden,
02:41and mining partner Jayden Perry have had a bumper start to their season.
02:47We're trying to get through about 50 tonne a day.
02:50I hope the boys out there are doing well.
02:52Splitting their efforts between processing consistent fine gold at German Gully
02:57and hunting for record-breaking nuggets at Caddo's Paddock.
03:01Having the two operations running at once is going to really pay off for us.
03:04All in a push to hit their $1 million season target.
03:09Well done, Caden.
03:10We're already over halfway to our season target.
03:19Hiya, Jayden. How are you feeling?
03:21Still battling on it. I had to have my injection from the Crohn's
03:24because I was just feeling worse and worse.
03:26Mate, I feel bad I'm not out there helping us, you know?
03:29Well, Jayden, seriously, mate.
03:31What you can do for us is get yourself feeling the best you can
03:34and then come out once you're feeling right.
03:36Yeah, beautiful, mate. Well, it'll bring me any time.
03:38100%. We'll do, mate.
03:42We haven't got Jayden here with us.
03:44He battles an autoimmune condition called Crohn's.
03:47He's got a dose of the flu.
03:49The combination has really knocked him around.
03:52He's ended up in hospital.
03:54Could be a few days, he might be down.
03:57But right now, it's Caden and I, with only the two of us,
04:00we just can't run the wash plant at German Gully.
04:03Here at Caddo's, we're digging down with the excavator
04:07to the ancient buried river streams
04:09where the old-timers have done a lot of their mining.
04:12And what we've already proven so far
04:14is that the old boys don't get it all.
04:18Caddo's paddock sits along the path
04:20of an ancient buried river channel,
04:22first worked by old-timers in the late 1800s.
04:27Now, the team rely on modern machinery to rework the ground,
04:31hoping to recover the gold those early miners left behind.
04:37We're starting to get some good gold out of the ground.
04:39The only problem is this weather
04:41looks like it's starting to turn again.
04:46You can go take that one away, mate.
04:50This rain's starting to get heavier again.
04:53It's starting to get slippery.
04:54This weather's really, uh, making things tough.
04:58The ground's getting pretty soft.
05:00The truck doesn't really want to gain traction.
05:06Keep it going, Cade.
05:07Keep it going, mate.
05:11The truck's struggling.
05:13All the dirt in there's too heavy for it.
05:20You're gonna get stuck there.
05:29I'm not going anywhere here.
05:31He's voluntarily stuck.
05:35Bloody hell.
06:03I feel like a bit of a bloody idiot falling in a hole,
06:05but I just didn't see it.
06:06And now I'm in it.
06:08You have to have your wits about you when you're out here.
06:11Could turn into a very bad day very quickly.
06:14I was going to give Jackie a call on the radio
06:16but I'm outside of radio comms.
06:19So now that I've got that jacked up,
06:22I'm on the hunt for rocks.
06:25Oh, the humidity!
06:26I'm gushing like a busted tap!
06:29I'm so close.
06:32Being able to drive out of this hole.
06:36Oh, all right.
06:42Come on.
06:45Yes!
06:47Yes!
06:49We're back on the road, baby!
06:57Wow, you...
07:01Oh, my God!
07:05Why are you like this?
07:06Well, that would be sweat.
07:08I drive into a hole, Jackie.
07:09What?
07:10I was driving.
07:11I drove into a hole.
07:12And then I had to get the car out of the hole.
07:14How big was this hole?
07:15Big!
07:16You just sprained me!
07:17Yep.
07:18With your sweat!
07:19I suppose I better keep you a bit more supervised in future.
07:24It's hot up here, it's humid, and I've seen him sweat before,
07:28but he looks like he just came out of a storm.
07:32Well, he shook off like a golden retriever getting out of the beach.
07:35That was something else.
07:38The bloke needs to drink water, get some salts back into him
07:41because I don't want him to drop like a fly out here.
07:43He's too big for me to pick up.
07:46It's crazy.
07:48All right, good luck.
07:49Get yourself a nuggy, mate!
07:51Let's get it!
08:00Right in the middle of the boiler out here.
08:03We're three and a half ounces in to our ten-ounce target.
08:07The heat's definitely on.
08:09We've really got to try and make the most out of the time
08:12that we have left here,
08:13and with the wet season fast approaching,
08:15our time's running out.
08:16There's a lot of pressure to try and search as many places as possible
08:21because we've got to find the ones that have all the gold in them.
08:24The whole point of what we're doing at the moment is exploration.
08:26The more ground we cover, the better for the leaseholder.
08:31Welcome to the territory.
08:34Jackie Bazzetti and Kyle Wilson
08:36have travelled from their homes in Queensland and Western Australia
08:40over 2,000 kilometres deep into the Northern Territory
08:44in search of a new opportunity.
08:47Woo-hoo!
08:48I need a hand to do some exploration work.
08:50Whatever you find is yours to keep.
08:52The pair have been tasked by leaseholder Grant Farris
08:55to track down new gold deposits.
08:58This is unreal!
08:59Across his vast 450 square kilometres of leases.
09:03Oh-ha! You ripper!
09:05Keeping what gold they find
09:07in exchange for the GPS locations of their discoveries.
09:11Us getting to keep all the gold is just amazing.
09:15Now, with the wet season closing in,
09:18the pair are battling 90% humidity
09:21in a race to locate as much gold ground as possible
09:24before heavy rains and tropical cyclones force them out.
09:29Tell you what, that humidity is an absolute killer.
09:34This would be awesome if this is a target.
09:37The nuggies here have two meanings for us at the moment.
09:40One, it's gold.
09:42But two, it's another spot for Grant.
09:45I start to get excited.
09:49It's gold.
09:50Great news for Grant.
09:52Just going to grab a quick photo
09:53and a GPS location for the nug.
09:55All right, one in a jar.
09:57Time to get another one.
09:57Let's go.
09:59That's a pretty booming signal there.
10:02Oh, where is it?
10:04Oh, yeah!
10:06That's a big boy.
10:08This is like $3,000, $4,000.
10:11That's why we're doing this.
10:22No way!
10:24Whoa!
10:26I just saw this pile of rocks
10:28and I thought that looked like something interesting.
10:30But look at this!
10:32This is like an old oven or an old kiln.
10:37Definitely gold rush here.
10:39A little bit of history right there.
10:41Once upon a time,
10:42that would have come all the way around here.
10:44You can see the edges of it.
10:46I'd say this was fully domed in and enclosed.
10:49This is so, so cool.
10:52And there's something else down there too.
10:54I know it doesn't look like much,
10:56but we are right in the thick of an old-timers mining town.
11:00If only you could see what it looked like back then.
11:03In 1871, the discovery of gold
11:07drew hundreds of hopeful Chinese and European arrivals
11:10into the remote Northern Territory.
11:14But the brutal heat and unforgiving isolation
11:17quickly took its toll,
11:19forcing miners to abandon gold-rich ground
11:22and their dreams to strike it rich.
11:27The only reason that they're setting up camp
11:29is because they're getting gold here.
11:30And they weren't detecting gold like iron.
11:32So it's very, very likely
11:35that they left something behind.
11:37There literally could be
11:38millions of dollars of gold around here.
11:41All we've got to do is find it.
11:47Oh, it looks like a rickety old windmill.
11:50Old man and an old girl and an old windmill.
11:52Everything's old.
11:54Tell you what, this is a rough old road, isn't it?
11:56I've got somebody very interested in my lease here.
11:59They said to me,
12:00buy me three and a half ounces of gold in one week
12:03and we'll buy it off you.
12:05You want me to give you a hand to get out?
12:07Get f***ed.
12:10OK, Dee, grab the escabado to start
12:12pushing some dirt up.
12:14I'm going over with me old mate Rusty
12:16to start feeding dirt into the slush
12:17and we can get some gold
12:18because I can sell this bloody tenement.
12:20Righto, boss.
12:21See you later.
12:23Hooray.
12:24And no budget.
12:25Better get on and do a bit of stockpiling.
12:28I'm not showing up at Nullagyne
12:30or selling some equipment.
12:32We've become pretty good mates.
12:33I'll come and help Shane any time he wants.
12:38I generally love it out here
12:40but it's come to an end.
12:43These tenements have got to go
12:44and I've got to go back and have a normal life.
12:49Everything's getting a bit old around here.
12:52It's been a hard, hard year.
12:54I'm getting old.
12:55The bones aren't good.
12:56I just can't do what I used to do.
12:59Dee will be loading the truck.
13:00I'll be driving the back with the boys.
13:02Russell is the key to this now.
13:06Paul, that's rough.
13:07Things I'll do for this bloke.
13:09It's been a long time with Shane now.
13:12Some of the things we've done.
13:15The road for him is nearly over.
13:17He can't keep going on like this.
13:19I'll come out here one day and he'll be dead on the ground.
13:22That's what we don't want.
13:24If we can prove the lease,
13:26Shane can make a good dollar
13:28and he can be happy.
13:31Oh, there he is.
13:33Let's go see what he's got in the stall.
13:36Jono, how are we?
13:38Great to see you again, Russell.
13:39Go and get the cuddle.
13:40What have we got?
13:41I've really gone to some effort here, Russell.
13:43So what have you done to Mr. Fragile?
13:45Well, have a look and then you'll know, won't you?
13:48Well, Mr. Fragile,
13:49I decided to rebuild it.
13:52What do you think?
13:53Where are they?
13:56You've been busy.
13:57Well, Russell,
13:58you know I'm trying to sell this lease.
14:00What I really need, Russell,
14:03I need to get about three and a half ounces of gold.
14:07How long have we got?
14:08We've got one week.
14:10I've got Dee over there getting the dirt sorted out
14:13and I've already lost a third of me time
14:15because I've got to carp the dirt 20 kilometres.
14:19Ten kilometres there, ten kilometres back.
14:22You give me the water,
14:23give me the dirt,
14:23I'll get you the gold.
14:24How's that sound?
14:25That's all right.
14:25That's all I want to hear, Russell.
14:27All right, you get the water.
14:28I'll look after the machine.
14:29Gee whiz, he's throwing the pressure on me.
14:32Come on, sink.
14:33Sink, sink.
14:35Well, this is Mr. Fragile Mark 2.
14:38Mr. Fragile,
14:39we pulled out of the scrap about seven years ago.
14:41It's been great.
14:42It's found a lot of gold.
14:44Shane's done a lot of work to this thing
14:45and it's been attached to it.
14:47So now he's given a new lease of life.
14:49Well, the principle behind it
14:50is that we introduce all our material into the bin
14:52and it gets washed down through the bin
14:54into the trommel.
14:56There's different size grate in the trommel.
14:58So anything smaller than that
15:00will drop through the bottom
15:01into the base of the tray,
15:03run through,
15:04then into our catch mats.
15:05Anything bigger
15:06goes out the back end.
15:08Just for my sake,
15:09I hope it starts.
15:20Bloody puck, that thing.
15:22It looks pretty good.
15:23Backyard barney sometimes,
15:24but he has a go.
15:26Russell, we have any water?
15:28Yeah, we've got water.
15:29Sounds a bit squeaky there, Russell.
15:31And you put some grease in it?
15:33Get out of the way I operate.
15:36Are you happy about the feed?
15:38I reckon we're going to need
15:39a bit more water flow through here,
15:40but we'll put some dirt in first
15:41and see how we go.
15:43So what you're telling me, Russell,
15:45surprised me.
15:46Are you reasonably happy with it?
15:48Well, we've got water
15:49and it spins.
15:52It's done all right.
15:54You've done well.
15:55What about the gold?
15:56Well, that's up to the next one, isn't it?
16:05Keep coming, keep coming, keep coming.
16:07Right, left hand down, left hand down.
16:10That'll do you.
16:11I'm out there.
16:11Just drop the sides for me.
16:13Come on.
16:14Bloody hell.
16:16All right, all right, all right.
16:18I'm coming.
16:20Come on.
16:22There's no way to treat
16:23a 70-year-old.
16:30Justin, there's time here.
16:37Barrel, I think.
16:38Let's do it.
16:44We've got it going.
16:45Hopefully this is going to work.
16:50No!
16:51Don't block up.
16:53Bloody hell.
16:55What's happened, Russell?
16:56He's flocking up already.
17:02It's all wrong.
17:06All wrong, Shano.
17:12The whole bottom flock.
17:15We're not stopping the rocks.
17:17It's a problem.
17:22Oh, hang on.
17:23Get in there and dig it out.
17:28I'll get him.
17:29I'll get him.
17:29I'll get him.
17:32Go on, get him.
17:38I got out here this week
17:39and I thought things were going to be looking good.
17:41And there's a few things that are worn out here.
17:42They've all had a hard life.
17:44And the same as Shane.
17:44I mean, I'll come up here to help the guy out
17:46and he's about to put it together.
17:49I need to have a serious look at this.
17:51It's not just one thing.
17:52It's the whole picture.
17:56Ah!
18:03We've got to get this out of here, mate.
18:04I do not want to dump this dirt here.
18:07Could have good gold in it.
18:09I'll come over and I'll give you a push.
18:11Bloody blue skies there.
18:13All that rain before.
18:15At Caddo's paddock,
18:16heavy rain has stranded
18:18the Poseidon crew's 30-ton dump truck,
18:21preventing them from getting vital pay dirt
18:24to the pad for detecting.
18:27The last thing I wanted was something like this to happen
18:29and we finally got a break from the weather.
18:32Even though the sun's out now,
18:33it's set around the ground.
18:36Do you know they're sloppy?
18:46The truck's struggling.
18:55Keep it going.
18:57Keep it going.
18:59Swing right, swing right.
19:02Keep it going, keep it going, keep it going.
19:18We've lost a lot of time out here,
19:20but now we've got a pad ready to be pushed out.
19:22All we've got to do is jump up in the dozer,
19:23spread it out in a nice thin layer,
19:25ready to detect.
19:33One minute, we've got blue skies in the next minute.
19:36It's bloody raining.
19:37And the next minute, it's bloody hailing.
19:40Fifty seasons in one day.
19:43Typical Victorian weather.
19:45Pretty wet and muddy.
19:47It's going to really hold us up.
19:54It's definitely not ideal.
19:58How wet and muddy the pad is,
20:01it's out of most material getting stuck in the truck.
20:11This whole area is just absolute fluff.
20:13This is unreal.
20:18I've got to take these literally
20:20one swing at a time
20:23because I've got to spend half my time
20:25pulling my feet out of the ground.
20:27So the gold's here,
20:28but it's just pretty hard to get it out.
20:34Okay.
20:36There you go.
20:37Got a target.
20:51How's that?
20:52It's on my boot.
20:54It's that muddy.
20:56I've gone to swipe the ground
20:57to get the target
20:58and it's just stuck to my boot.
21:04God, this is slop.
21:06Can you believe that?
21:08There it is.
21:09Hard to actually see it
21:11because that's sloppy.
21:13Probably about two and a half grams,
21:15so about $400 sitting right here.
21:17I'm getting gold stuck in me boots.
21:20We've got to be getting gold stuck in the tracks
21:21for those of sure.
21:23Hey, Dad.
21:24You're not going to believe it,
21:26but it is that wet and sloppy on this pad.
21:29I was picked up a bit of gold from my boot.
21:32Ha, ha.
21:34Ah, well, don't walk off the pad
21:36until you detect your boots, mate.
21:37I can only imagine how much gold
21:39might be getting stuck to the tracks.
21:40It's getting stuck to my boot.
21:41We can't keep doing this.
21:46What are this?
21:47This is...
21:47This is ridiculous.
21:49Dad, I don't reckon we can keep going here.
21:51It's not looking the best, mate, is it?
21:55It's just all slop.
21:56The pad, you can't tell where it starts
21:58and where it ends.
21:59I don't know what we're going to do.
22:00We'll be losing gold.
22:02Can't level it with the dozer.
22:05We've got to find out another way.
22:12Just beautiful out here.
22:14So here we are
22:15in the Northern Territory.
22:18Where else would you rather be?
22:19This place is unreal.
22:22It's like Jurassic Park in here.
22:27Listen to that.
22:29Hopefully,
22:30this is a bit of the good stuff.
22:32I'm going to keep my fingers crossed for this one
22:34because that's a booming signal.
22:40Look at that thing.
22:42Easy gold.
22:43Did you hear that thud?
22:45I cannot get over the size of the nuggets
22:48that are getting thrown out of this place.
22:50This is insane.
22:51What a ripper.
22:52Almost half pounds of gold in that thing.
22:54This could be almost $5,000 here.
22:57Grant's on a gold mine here.
22:58He just doesn't even know it yet.
22:59What a bloody good day to be a gold hunter.
23:02Yeah.
23:03They got the best job ever.
23:05Covered in sweat and flies.
23:07Awesome.
23:09In the Northern Territory,
23:11Jackie and Kyle are working through punishing heat
23:14to track down new gold deposits
23:17across lease owner Grant Farris'
23:20450 square kilometre claim.
23:24We've put in a pretty solid effort out here, Grant.
23:26Found him some good prospects.
23:28While the gold's great,
23:29there's the other part of what we're here for
23:31and that's building relationships, you know.
23:33If we do this right,
23:35making friends with someone like Grant
23:36who's very successful in the industry
23:38may have been things for us in the future.
23:40If they can prove this area has value,
23:43Grant will send in heavy machinery
23:45to expose the ground
23:46and give the pair a chance to work
23:48on a larger mining operation.
23:51Grant's definitely going to want to check this area out.
23:54This is what I found just walking around here
23:56in the last few hours.
23:58If it wasn't for all this gold,
23:59I tell you what,
24:00this heat would be absolutely unbearable.
24:04Hey, mate, have you got a copy?
24:07Copy?
24:08It's hot.
24:08I was just checking you're all right.
24:10It's definitely sticky.
24:11A bit wet air up here in the north
24:13than what I'm used to down in the west.
24:14Well, I think Grant's going to be pretty happy
24:16with what we've got.
24:17I mean, this could be our biggest way
24:19into the season.
24:20Bloody oath.
24:21You sound like you're killing it over there.
24:22Better get digging or I might beat you.
24:26Slow and steady wins the race, girly.
24:27Slow and steady.
24:30Or so he thinks.
24:31Copy that.
24:32All right.
24:33Good luck.
24:33Get some.
24:34You!
24:35Slow and steady might win the race in the west,
24:38but that's not how us Queenslanders work.
24:42I'm up for a challenge.
24:45We've been going really, really hard this week.
24:48Keeps getting hotter every day.
24:51Check out all these workings.
24:53The old-timers were here,
24:55and they were mining this place.
24:57There must be some massive gold down here.
25:00These guys didn't do all this work for nothing.
25:03When the wet season kicks in,
25:07all these gullies are going to be absolutely flowing with water.
25:12Water flowing through here is what's pushed that gold down this system.
25:18So, if I follow the path of the water,
25:22I'll stay on the path of the gold.
25:25Whoa.
25:27The gully just disappears.
25:30If I need to follow the gold, I need to follow it down here.
25:33Gosh, it's so steep.
25:36Got to be really cautious.
25:39Bit too remote out here.
25:41You don't want to be having any accidents.
25:43This ground has all these loose rocks in it.
25:47Oh, God.
25:48It's not helpful.
26:06It's just the rock, Shane.
26:08It's the rocks.
26:10It's just killing us.
26:11There must be a big rock in there, Russell.
26:13At the dusty wind's lease on the outskirts of Yalgu.
26:17How are we going to make any money doing this?
26:19This is not helping our relationship, I can tell you.
26:22Shane and Russell need to get their wash plant, Mr Fragile,
26:27back online
26:27if they're to hit the three and a half ounces of gold needed
26:31to secure the sale of the lease by week's end.
26:36Keep doing that because that broom handle's through the bottom.
26:41Hands on.
26:43Nice.
26:45So I could just punch a hole and at least get rid of the water.
26:53Yep, you just got it.
26:57Hey, Rusty, this is no good.
27:00How am I going to get any gold wasting all this time?
27:06Russell, just tell me what you want.
27:09We need to sieve the dirt.
27:10OK, Russell, I've got a sieve over there.
27:12We'll just get on with it.
27:14It's not going to fall apart when I pick it up, is it?
27:16I'll probably fall apart before that.
27:23Slowly, Russell.
27:27Slowly, slowly.
27:31Oh, no.
27:32Oh, let go.
27:33What are you doing?
27:34You've got to be careful around here.
27:36I don't want to fall too hard.
27:37Just let it go, Shane.
27:39If it's going to break, it's going to break.
27:40We can't break you.
27:42Oh, these flies.
27:44The heat.
27:45Me bloody knees, I had it.
27:48They're not for blokes at my age.
27:51These are the younger blokes who bounce back better.
27:55You just don't bounce back as you get old.
28:00Try again.
28:01Sorry.
28:02Oh, OK.
28:04Right, let's go.
28:06You've got to be careful.
28:18Well done, Rusty.
28:20Let's put some dirt through it.
28:24That's a bit I like, the dust.
28:27Before, we better have had all these big rocks caught in the machine.
28:30Now we've got these thighs.
28:32Go through easy.
28:33And what I'll do is I'll run the detector over the oversized rocks a little bit later
28:37in case we can get some more gold.
28:41That's going well, Shane-O.
28:43Well, come on, Rusty.
28:44Let's get on the gold.
28:50Yes, we've lost time, but we've just got to get on with it.
28:53That's all.
29:00I'd better get this truck up to where Dee is
29:02and start getting stuck into this dirt for real.
29:06To keep the operation going,
29:09Shane must make 20-kilometre round trips
29:12between the wash plant and the dig site,
29:14relying on his mate Dee
29:16to keep the pay dirt stockpiled and ready to load.
29:24Don't run over me.
29:25Whoa!
29:26Hit it.
29:27Whoa!
29:29Bloody useless.
29:30Good.
29:30Get out of bed.
29:33That'll do.
29:36Getting hot out here for an old bloke.
29:39It's all right for you sitting on the machine eating flies.
29:41Too bad.
29:43I've got a wife that can make my life miserable.
29:45Oh, well, I'm filling in for her.
29:47Hurry up.
29:47Just start loading up.
29:49Oh, that's a good scoop.
29:51Piss off, Shane.
29:52You're putting me off my work.
29:54Hurry up.
29:55See, now look what you've done.
29:59There's plenty of gold in that, Dee.
30:01I hope so.
30:04Okay, Dee, that's enough.
30:05I'm off.
30:06All right.
30:07Now, let's go.
30:08Whoa!
30:10Let's get on the gold.
30:12Come on, you old mole.
30:13Start going.
30:14Come on.
30:14Oh!
30:24You know, we give each other shit all the time.
30:26It's good fun.
30:27It's a good bloke.
30:28It's a genuine bloke.
30:29You don't tell any things like that.
30:35When I first started doing this, I was out here with me dad.
30:39I mean, me daddy was my prospecting partner for more than 45 years.
30:45I think as soon as I see that red dust, I know I'm home.
30:50But enough's enough.
30:52This is really the end of the road.
30:54You know, I've got other obligations.
30:56You know, I've got grandchildren.
30:57I've missed out on too much of not being at the grandfather do's
31:01or walking my kids to school like other grandfathers do.
31:05It's time to go home.
31:07I know I'm going to miss it.
31:09I miss the dust.
31:10That's ridiculous.
31:19It's incredible weather patterns right now.
31:22Raining right here.
31:23Like there's blue sky just there.
31:25No rain.
31:26It's sort of shut us down doing the pad method,
31:28so we're down in the pit.
31:30Dad got me in the excavator stripping the layers off
31:32about six inches at a time.
31:34Protecting the ground layer by layer.
31:36It can take a little bit longer.
31:37But look, it's a last resort.
31:39It's just too wet to be able to get the dirt to the pad.
31:42So we've got to basically strip layers down.
31:46Some of that layers have been turned over by the old timers.
31:50Here is all dug ground.
31:51This is bedrock they haven't touched.
31:53That's the areas where we could get some really good gold.
31:58Caden's doing a great job.
32:00First time that he's done this method.
32:02Just taking like a duck to water.
32:05The tech has only got a limited range.
32:07And if you dig past that,
32:08we might be literally throwing gold away.
32:11You know, a 10 grammer and a very big bit of gold.
32:14If the excavator operator strips too much out of there,
32:17these detectors are good,
32:19but the optimal range is around about four to six inches.
32:23If you take any more than that,
32:24you start losing gold.
32:26I feel pretty happy that Dad's got that trust in me.
32:29To not dig too deep to not throw out any gold.
32:32And he's also trusting me not to hit him with the excavator
32:35while he's down there detecting.
32:47You've got a target there, dear.
32:49Have a listen to this.
32:50It sounds nice.
32:54It's not too bad.
32:55It's all right.
32:56Through here,
32:57you can actually see like a line going up here.
33:01So that's virgin ground.
33:03This is dug ground.
33:04And we've got a target right on the edge where they stopped.
33:08Sounds like it could be more than a few grams, I reckon.
33:15Oh, yeah.
33:16Oh, this is not a bad target.
33:19Cater, mate, this is going to be more than a few grams.
33:21This is going to be ounces, I reckon, mate.
33:25Oh, listen to that.
33:28They have missed that by inches.
33:30Get it out.
33:31Come on.
33:31I want to see what it is.
33:32Yeah, don't worry about that.
33:34I need to open this hole up a bit.
33:36Maybe I'll have a dig.
33:41I'll just have a listen.
33:45It's right in that wall, mate.
33:46Right in there.
33:48This virgin ground is the key to it all, bud.
33:50And this is more than an ounce,
33:52I can tell you that right now.
33:59It's gold.
34:01That's just gold.
34:03Look at it.
34:04Look, Cater.
34:06Gold.
34:07Gold.
34:09Come on.
34:09All right.
34:11Look at that virgin ground, mate.
34:13I'm going to get you to grab it.
34:14Hey, listen.
34:15Listen.
34:16Just dig around it.
34:17Yeah.
34:18Right, but don't scrape hard.
34:19You've got to dig under it.
34:20Yeah.
34:21That's it.
34:22That's it.
34:23All right.
34:25Now, just be careful.
34:26Now, just expose a little bit of your hand now with your fingers.
34:29Grab hold of the nugget.
34:32Oh.
34:34Riggle it, wriggle it.
34:35Just wriggle, wriggle, wriggle, wriggle.
34:36Wriggle.
34:37Oh.
34:38Oh.
34:39Oh.
34:39Oh.
34:40Oh.
34:40Oh.
34:40Oh.
34:40Oh.
34:40Oh.
34:43Mate, these moments you remember forever.
34:46Tell you what, mate.
34:47That's got some weight in it.
34:48How do you feel that?
34:48I reckon they've got these seven or eight ounces.
34:50That's 35 to 40 grand worth of gold right there, mate.
34:54Start of the week with jading down.
34:55Then we've had rain, hail storms.
34:58Everything this week's been worth it.
35:00Look at this.
35:01I love these moments, and I love having them with you, my boy.
35:04Come here.
35:05You're doing a great job.
35:06Beautiful.
35:07Hey, look at the rewards that we're getting.
35:09Look at that.
35:10Woo!
35:17Go mountain climbing, they said.
35:20It'll be fun.
35:21In the remote tropics of the Northern Territory, Jackie and Kyle are battling suffocating humidity
35:27to track down as much gold ground as possible before the wet season forces them out.
35:34OK.
35:35You've got to be careful when you're in places like this.
35:38Everything's beautiful here, but we're a long way from the nearest medical post.
35:43You can end up with a broken bone pretty easily.
35:46If you haven't got any comms out here and you're a long way away from the car, I don't reckon
35:50you're going to last too long on the ground.
35:52While this place is incredibly beautiful, it can be very unforgiving.
35:59I'm struggling a bit, I'll be honest.
36:03It's got to be at least 45 degrees down here.
36:08OK.
36:13Oh, it feels really good to be close to the ground again.
36:16That got really hairy.
36:22I reckon if I had a potato in my backpack, I could unwrap it and eat it after this and
36:30it would be cooked.
36:32With the wet season coming in, up cracks the humidity.
36:36It just smacks you up.
36:38You sweat like you've never sweat before.
36:40It's pretty dangerous.
36:41You can pull into dehydration pretty quickly and we're at serious risk of dropping like flies.
36:46When the wet season kicks in, places like this get flooded out, roads get blocked, we won't be able to
36:53leave.
36:54As warm ocean waters evaporate, moisture in the atmosphere drives up humidity, forming towering storm clouds.
37:03When they break, torrential rain can dump hundreds of millimetres in just hours, cutting off access to roads and leaving
37:12prospectors stranded.
37:19Oh, that's a screamer of a target.
37:33Getting a bit of a head spin.
37:38Still in the wall.
37:40Just take this out a bit.
37:44Oh, man.
37:47Oh, can we all just be relieved that that is out?
37:52Oh, I really hope it's gold.
38:02Oh, yes.
38:05That's not junk.
38:06That's a nice nugget.
38:08Look at that.
38:09Definitely a few grams of gold there.
38:11Oh, that's good.
38:13Gorgeous.
38:14I'm even struggling to talk.
38:16It's that hot right now.
38:18We're doing it for the gold.
38:21It's good.
38:22It's real, real good.
38:36It looks like we've got a bit of a storm rolling in.
38:38If this thing dumps a whole heap of rain, we could be stuck here.
38:48Oh, here she comes.
38:53Once these storms kick in, where I'm standing is going to be underwater.
38:59Good idea for us to get out of the rain.
39:04There's lightning.
39:05Got to get to the car.
39:13Right, O.D., let's go weigh this up.
39:15See if we made the grade this week.
39:17That's what we need to find out.
39:21Russell, take it.
39:22It's that light.
39:23Don't drop it.
39:24What do you need?
39:25I needed three and a half ounces.
39:28If I've even got an ounce, I'll be surprised, Russell.
39:33We'll see what we got.
39:41It's only 1.38.
39:44It's still good money.
39:46Good money?
39:47Russell, I've got steam coming out of my ears.
39:50Now I've got to ring up the buyers, see if I can get an extension on time.
39:54Then I've got to beg to you guys, who have helped me out a lot for a bit more extension
39:58of time.
39:59Well, I can't give you a hand, Shane.
40:01You might need to walk away from this one.
40:02A winner never quits, and a quitter never wins.
40:05But you've got to be safe doing it, Shane.
40:06That's why I'm worried about you.
40:08What about you, Debbie?
40:09I'll give you another week.
40:11So you're in?
40:12Yeah.
40:13You hold his hand as well, Dee.
40:14I'm gone.
40:15I'm out of here.
40:15Oh, well.
40:18This is enough to make me vomit.
40:22Thanks, Shane.
40:22It's been a great journey again.
40:24Yep.
40:24You're nearly there, but maybe it's time.
40:26I'm just about ready to retire.
40:28I'm calling it a day.
40:29All I've got to do is get it over the line.
40:32But, Shane, you've got to start looking after yourself.
40:35Otherwise, you need to walk away.
40:40I feel like the territory's been really kicking us this week.
40:43Every day, it's just been getting out a little bit hotter.
40:46It's nuts.
40:46And you went and stuck your car in a hole.
40:49Hey, I thought we weren't going to talk about that again.
40:51No.
40:51We will never stop talking about that.
40:53You did it.
40:54It happened.
40:55And it's up here.
40:56The storm we had coming over as well, that was just a sign that the wet season's brewing.
41:00Well, let's see what we've got in that jar.
41:05Hang on, mate.
41:05It's so chunky and stuck.
41:07Look, look, look, look.
41:08Oh!
41:10No way.
41:11Look at that.
41:134.75.
41:14Oh!
41:16Woo-hoo-hoo!
41:17So that's just over eight ounces for the season so far.
41:20And in dollars?
41:22Over 40, say.
41:24Mate, we've just doubled everything we've found for the entire trip.
41:27Oh!
41:28How good!
41:31With leaseholder Grant Farris away on business...
41:35Here's Carl.
41:38G'day, mate.
41:39How are ya?
41:40He's sent in his right-hand man, Carl Skyring, to check in on the pair's progress.
41:47How's your week?
41:48Not bad.
41:49Exhausted.
41:50You make it sound all right.
41:52It was brutal.
41:53But look, you guys are sitting on a gold mine out there.
41:56You have done well.
41:58I just got up to find a Grant, and he said he's pretty happy with this.
42:02Hey!
42:03As I said, the wet season, they just run a corner.
42:06We're going to probably need a hand.
42:07It's in the wet plant.
42:08If you want to hang around for another week.
42:11Loving the sound of that.
42:12What about you, Jackie?
42:14All right.
42:16You got yourself a deal, mate.
42:18Mate, that sounds awesome.
42:20Well, on that note, I reckon we go grab a coldie and a feed, eh?
42:30It's been a tough battle this week.
42:31Knew it was going to be a challenge as soon as Jaden called in sick.
42:35Nearly everything that could go wrong did go wrong, but we found a way around it.
42:39I tell you what, it was well-earned gold this week, mate.
42:42So, season target's 200 ounces, Caden.
42:45Righto.
42:46We're at 140 and a half of thereabouts right now.
42:48Let's see what we add to it with this.
42:533.76 ounces.
42:55And then the...
42:56For the big one.
42:56The chunk.
42:58Moment of truth, Dad.
43:0211.24 ounces.
43:03That's roughly around $56,000 worth of gold right there.
43:08Mate, some people say I'm a dreamer, but you've got to have dreams, mate,
43:11because if you don't have dreams, what have you got?
43:14If you keep believing it, it will happen someday.
43:17It will happen.
43:18Well, you can count me in as a dreamer, too,
43:20because after this week, I've been dreaming of a nice hot steak,
43:23so pack this up.
43:26Yeah, fair enough, too.
43:28My shout, you deserve it.
43:58You
