US President Donald Trump questioned Folarin Balogun’s straight red card following the USA’s 4-1 defeat to Belgium, saying he had asked FIFA to review the decision. Speaking at a White House press briefing, Trump said, “I didn't think it was a foul.” He added, “I'm good at this stuff. I didn't think it was a foul.” Explaining his view, Trump said, “It was two great athletes that crashed into each other and got entangled.” He concluded, “That was not a guy punching somebody in the face, that would be different.” His remarks have sparked fresh debate over the controversial dismissal.

00:00But all I did, all I did, I asked for a review because I didn't think it was a foul.
00:05And, you know, again, I'm good at this stuff. I didn't think it was a foul.
00:08I thought it was two great athletes that crashed into each other and got entangled.
00:12That was not a, that was not a guy punching somebody in the face or anything that, you know, would
00:17be different.
00:18And I think it's, I think it's a terrible, if they wouldn't allow, you know, a top player,
00:25maybe the best, maybe among the best players on the team to play.
00:30I think it would have had a big stain. And I related just that feel.
00:34I didn't tell him what to do. I can't tell him what to do.
00:36But, and I don't believe he made the decision.
00:40I think it was a committee that made the decision and they made the right decision because number one,
00:44it wasn't a foul and you want to see a game with your best players.
00:48You don't want to say, how would you feel if I took, you know, we take Messi out.
00:54Look, you know, he ran into somebody or we took Ronaldo.
00:59Ronaldo, you bunked into somebody. We're going to take you out of a game. He's great.
01:04Well, Harry Kane, Harry Kane, we're going to take you out of the game, Harry,
01:07because you happen to hit somebody a little bit harder than you can't, you can't do that.
01:13If you would have taken him out, I think, I think it would have really stained this incredible champion.
01:19We got to have our best players and they've got, Belgium's got a great team, by the way.
01:23We have our best players and they have to have their best. And if we win or we lose, it's
01:29fair.
01:29Otherwise, let's say we lost him and we lose the game. It would be a terrible thing.
01:36So I think they made a really brilliant decision. I think the referee's call was horrible.
01:41And nobody talks about that. They talk about the red card like it's fine.
01:44Nobody talks. The referee's decision to red card. I didn't know what the hell a red card was.
01:50When I found out, I said, you've got to be kidding. This guy just hands up.
01:53OK, your best player is not going to play next week or in the next game.
01:58I said, wow, that's a lot of power. That's terrible.
02:00But then I looked at his past and it wasn't so great.
02:06OK, OK.
02:06OK.
