00:01Epidemics are not a thing of the past. Instead, they will continue to emerge, and the next major pandemic is
00:07only a matter of time,
00:08believes Sir Adrian Hill, one of the leading vaccine scientists and winner of the 2026 European Inventor Prize in the
00:15research category.
00:17Outbreaks are going to continue. They happen frequently. Some of them we don't even hear about.
00:23They're put out very quickly by public health measures, but every decade, there's one that looks much more serious.
00:33COVID, of course, is a great example of that.
00:36Sir Adrian Hill believes that after COVID, we're prepared for any new pandemic.
00:40And we are better prepared today to make vaccines against whatever appears next year or in five years' time, because
00:48we have learned from COVID.
00:49So what did we learn? We learned that we can make vaccines in a year.
00:54We didn't know that. Some of the great experts on vaccines said, no, it'll take several years.
01:00Despite the distrust that developed towards vaccines after the coronavirus pandemic,
01:05Sir Adrian Hill appears optimistic that society's trust is gradually being restored.
01:10There's been a lot of misinformation, but the treatment for misinformation, in a word, is education.
01:17And actually, most people understand that overall vaccines were a very important treatment, if you like, for the COVID pandemic.
01:27And the negativity that was driven by other things, not really by a scientific assessment of safety, that's diminishing all
01:36the time.
01:37So vaccines are here to stay.
01:40Sir Adrian Hill was awarded the European Inventor Award this year for developing the R21 Matrix M vaccine,
01:45the first highly effective malaria vaccine after more than three decades of research.
