00:02Hello, welcome back everyone. Hello, hello, how are we? All right, where's that energy? I know
00:12it's Sunday, y'all, but come on, show me some love, please. Thank you, thank you. All right,
00:19for this segment, this next segment is called Beauty University, and we have the pleasure
00:25of having a master class in red carpet, level nails, hosted by Dawn Sterling. Please give
00:33it up to Ms. Dawn Sterling. Do I go? Go. Hi, everyone, how are you? Good afternoon, good afternoon.
00:49Thank you all for spending a part of your time with me today. My name is Dawn Sterling. I am
00:54based in New York. I am a nail artist, and I own a company called Nail Glam Productions.
01:01Here it is here, and what we do is I hire nail artists, I employ them, I educate them, and
01:07we work across all facets of fashion, celebrity, and music. I am going to be showing you how
01:16to get a red carpet manicure at home. So I'm going to tell you step by step. I want to
01:23introduce
01:24my beautiful model, Gabriella. So I'm just coming from France. I'm from Brooklyn. I never imagined
01:32in a million years that I would be able to take my nail craft across the country. So I
01:38just finished doing the Louis Vuitton show with Pharrell. I do Marnie. I've done St. Laurent.
01:44I've worked with all of these celebrities. These are all my covers as a nail artist. Are there
01:48any beauticians or people who are interested in doing hair and nails or makeup in the audience?
01:53No? Are you a nail artist or a hairstylist? What do you do? You do it yourself. Wonderful.
02:02So I'm going to show you how to complete a cute red carpet nail at home. Okay. Come on, let's
02:10go. We've already prepped, my girl. We've already prepped. This is a simple French manicure with
02:29a light chrome. And I've done this on red carpet. Sometimes we don't have a lot of time. Sometimes
02:36we can conceptualize with the designer, the artist, and then we get there and we don't
02:40have time. So we have to make it look like you took two hours because you guys know how
02:45long it takes to get your nails done. It takes a long time, but we don't have that kind of
02:49time. So I'm going to show you a quick three step process. I'm going to also introduce to
02:53you an anti-aging system that I do because the skin under the eye, the hands are the thinnest
03:00skin on the body. And you guys know that the skin is the largest organ of the body, right?
03:05So we need to take care of it. So as we get older, we stay snatched, right? Because your hand
03:10shows your age, your neck shows your age. So I implement these two things from MediCube to help
03:17with aging and anti-wrinkling in the nail service.
03:31So we've already done a little nail art. Here we are. We've already done nail art here. We have to
03:41show the camera and I'm going to show you on this nail. Make sure that you always have sterilized
03:52tools for every client. It's very important.
04:09So first we're going to just do a light nail filing. And these are all things that you can order
04:20online at home. So we're going to do a light filing here. And then we're going to just make
04:35sure you get that skin from the nail plate because that's how you have a longer lasting manicure
04:42is if you make sure that the prep is perfect and clean. So you make sure that you get all
04:47of that skin off of the nail plate. We've already done majority of the prep. And then you lightly
05:01buff the nail plate because we do not want to have damage onto the nail plate.
05:11Some people like to cut their cuticles a lot. I personally do not. So when you see dead cuticles,
05:20you can tell because they're lifting. Living cuticles are like still onto the nail fold. So when you see
05:29the skin lifting, that's where you can guide yourself to clip. We don't want to cut nobody.
05:46So now we will clean off the nail plate with 91% alcohol to dehydrate the oil. Have you ever
05:57had your nails done and it like lifts?
05:59Or sometimes it pops off? Or sometimes it pops off? It's because it's not dehydrated and cleaned properly.
06:05So you have to make sure you dehydrate it so that you have a lasting nail.
06:13So I'm a woman of a certain age. I know I look a little young, but I'm not. And I
06:18come from the era of acrylic in the 90s.
06:21I did acrylic for years, years. And now we have this system, this full coverage nail system that is made
06:28of all
06:29gel, which is quite nice and a little bit healthier for the nails in my opinion. And it's made of
06:36gel.
06:36You can order this online. This is from a brand called Aprey. I actually like this brand. And you used
06:42to have to be a professional,
06:43but now you can just order certain products online. So this is a full coverage tip. You will size the
06:50finger.
06:51They have many, many sizes. So you pick which one fits the finger the best. And that's how you gauge
06:57if it can fit.
07:00I'm going to go ahead and dehydrate the nail plate just a little more. And then I'm going to use
07:08primer.
07:09Some people are allergic to primer. If you're allergic to primer, there's a product called protein bond that you can
07:14use.
07:14And it'll make sure that it doesn't come off. But primer is very important. And you just let that dry
07:21for a few seconds.
07:31So we're going to now use the builder gel. So you just do a thin layer a little bit away
07:43from the cuticle area.
07:50And then you make sure you put a little dehydration in here and you rub the inside so it can
07:57have a little roughness so that it can stick longer.
08:00I personally put a little bit here at the tip.
08:09And then you just go to the cuticle and you slowly press down just until you see it meet the
08:22free edge.
08:25I prefer to use an LED lamp that you do not have to hold so you can focus on not
08:30having crooked nails.
08:35Especially if you're doing it at home. And you'll save so much money doing this at home.
08:47I started doing nails when I was 16. Just like as a hobby. And to be here with you guys
08:54means so much to me. So thank you.
09:00Okay. So now we are all set. And we are going to just file to keep that nice almond shape.
09:12And the good thing about these full covers, you can pick your shape already. They already come square, squabble, oval,
09:19round, stiletto.
09:20You don't even have to trip anymore. It's so fab.
09:27So we are just going to make sure that it aligns with the other girls. These are my girls.
09:38I am just going to clip the tip off here.
09:49So once you flash cure with this lamp, then you are going to go ahead and let her put her
09:58hand in there for 60 seconds. Is it on? For 60 seconds.
10:04This was really fun. I've been working with Miss Alicia Keys for about 13 years and she doesn't get long
10:10nails at all because she has to play the piano.
10:12But there are still fun ways. I'm going to show you how to implement gems and how to make them
10:17last and all of these things that you can order online.
10:21Rocky loves his manicure, guys. He is the dream client.
10:25But yeah, so I'm so thankful.
10:37So we're just going to clean off this base here.
10:49I'm going to put a non wipe top coat on here.
10:58So that I can add the chrome.
11:05And she's going to put it in for 30 seconds.
11:24This is a glass chrome. This chrome is sheer instead of like opaque and platinum.
11:32And you can pretty much put it over any color. Natural, pink, red. Do it again for 30 seconds.
11:44Let me know, Anna.
11:56So when you have the non wipe, it makes it so easy to just apply.
12:01You just take your eyeshadow brush and you just go over it one time.
12:08And if you want it to be a little stronger, you can do it again.
12:14And you have to make sure that you have a powdered brush to take off the access.
12:25And it's super simple. It doesn't have to be difficult.
12:33Now, French manicure could be tricky.
12:36But I'm going to show you how to make it very, very simple.
12:44How many people like French manicure?
12:46It's my go to, my go to, my go to.
12:49So this is how you can achieve that red carpet runway French at home.
12:54Super simple steps.
13:02So to make it simple, you'll just draw a line from right to left.
13:12And then a line from top to bottom, like a T.
13:16And then you just connect each side to the top of your line.
13:33So once you continue to connect to the top of your line.
13:40And this is white gel paint.
13:42You can order all of this stuff online.
13:45Regular white gel polish moves a lot.
13:48But if you use like a gel paint in a pot, it doesn't move.
13:51And it gives you more flexibility to like play around with it.
13:56Then you use a flat brush like this.
14:00And then you just fill in the bottom.
14:13And then you can go back with your liner and just get the sides.
14:26And clean up your line.
14:31And then you just like this.
14:33I did a little larger so you can see.
14:40Okay, we can cure it.
14:42You can put it in.
14:53I'm going to go over this one more time with my non-white top coat.
14:59It doesn't have a sticky layer.
15:01So it makes the chrome come on very, very smooth.
15:11It's a funny story.
15:13When I was 16 growing up in Brooklyn, there was a really popular nail salon called Nubian Nails.
15:21By the way, I was the only Nubian in there.
15:23They were all Vietnamese, right?
15:25This is like 96.
15:27And I used to take my allowance and go get my nails done.
15:30And long story short, there was a really, I became friends with the owner.
15:34There was a really important basketball game and I wanted him to do my nails.
15:38And he said he had too many clients.
15:40And if I wanted him to do my nails, I needed to go to the back and help him move
15:44his pedicures along.
15:45And I was like, I don't know how to do that.
15:47And he was like, follow the person next to you.
15:49And I was like, all right.
15:50And I went and I did it.
15:53And I almost got beat up because I didn't know what I was doing by those girls.
15:57This is the 90s.
15:57It was rough in Brooklyn, right?
15:59And I loved how I felt.
16:02And I stayed the entire day.
16:04I never went to the game.
16:05And I made like $300 and I was in high school and I didn't paint because I didn't know how
16:10to paint.
16:11And I asked him, can I come back?
16:13And he said, yeah.
16:14And I just started going every day.
16:16And that's literally how I discovered that I love being a nail artist.
16:23And as I got older, you know, my grandmother would tell me, it's not a career.
16:28You don't pay taxes.
16:29You need a job.
16:30You need to go to college, you know?
16:31And my passion, it was just my passion.
16:35And a funny story.
16:36My grandmother was retiring from the post office and I took the test.
16:40And she was like, you're going to get the job.
16:42You need a job.
16:43I got the job.
16:45And the day I was supposed to start, I was 18, 19 years old.
16:50BET Awards flew me to L.A. to do manicures for free.
16:54I didn't even get paid at a gifting suite.
16:57And it was the same day.
16:58So I had to decide, like, was I going to go to the post office or was I going to
17:01go to L.A. for free?
17:02And I went to L.A. for free.
17:03And now I employ 300 nail artists globally, France, Los Angeles, Milan, New York.
17:10And we work with the largest fashion houses in all of the artists across the country.
17:14So I'm so thankful that I just kept with my heart and not with what society said was correct versus
17:22not correct.
17:26So we're going to go over one more time.
17:30And I bought this on Amazon for like $3.
17:34It's you just need to look at the reviews because the people don't lie.
17:40They tell you if they like a product or not.
17:43But look at the reviews.
17:48And then you just dust it off.
17:51And then you have.
17:53And then I left it clear because you can put any color as the base.
17:56This is a natural color, but you can put any color at the base with this glass chrome.
18:02It'll go over as a glaze.
18:04Hailey Bieber, who is also a longtime client of mine, kind of.
18:08She didn't create it, but she really made it popular.
18:11The Donut Glazed Nail.
18:13She really coined it and wore it for so long.
18:16And now it's like one of the most trending nail art services that the girls really want to have.
18:28And when you, I don't know about you guys, but I feel like when you're getting your hair done or
18:33you're getting your nails done,
18:34you become so close with the artist that's doing, whether you're in the shop or if you're at home or
18:40wherever you are,
18:41it's such an intimate experience, you know?
18:47So now, once this is done, this will be like a simple red carpet, French manicure.
18:54It goes with anything you wear, whether you're dressing up, whether you're dressing down.
18:57But for the girlies that want a little pop, I'm going to show you how to just spice up your
19:04Frenchie if you want like a little pop.
19:12So I'm going to, this is the ring just for gel so that I don't have to keep moving around
19:19when I'm doing my gems.
19:22Because sometimes the gems move.
19:24I'm not sure if anyone has ever tried to put stones on their nails, but sometimes they move.
19:29So this is a cute little way to keep it from moving.
19:37So, you can use rhinestone glue, Builder Gel.
19:43They have gels specifically for enhancements now.
19:50This is a larger gemstone.
19:55So I'm literally filling rubies lately.
19:59So I'm going to place it in the center.
20:12And then I'm just going to cure it for 10 seconds and hold it so that it doesn't move and
20:17it stays centered.
20:33And once it's done, you go back in with your gel.
20:40And you just go around, whichever jewelry that you decide to put on, you just go around it to kind
20:47of seal it.
21:13So I am going to add some other brush.
21:22Do you see a little stick over there?
21:24No.
21:27This is something that you can get on Amazon for like a dollar.
21:30It just helps you pick up the stones.
21:32Super, super easy.
21:35And then I'm just going to add some stones around.
21:52And I think pink and red looks beautiful together, but you can pick any colors you want.
21:57You can get creative.
21:58This is your art.
22:00You can do whatever you want to do.
22:27So I'm just going to go all around.
22:33And then we're going to place each stone close to each other.
22:42And then we're going to place each stone close to each other.
23:09And then you're going to put it in the lamp for 30 seconds.
23:13And that's going to be it.
23:17And then you'll have a French manicure with a pop.
23:24And you'll be red carpet ready.
23:28And you'll be red carpet ready any day of the week.
23:30No.
23:34No, no.
23:34Okay.
23:34Put your hand there.
23:35Ooh.
23:38Ooh.
23:44Ooh.
24:16And then we just follow the sides.
24:20Sometimes you get a little gel.
24:23And there we have it.
24:25And then you have your simple French with a little pop for the girls that need a little
24:31extra.
24:37Now, if you feel like your hands are getting a little wrinkled and showing the age, sometimes
24:45I feel like that, but I work really hard with my hands.
24:48This is a really good booster gel from a brand called MediCube.
24:51And you want to take off your wrink?
24:59So I just put the booster gel on the surface of the hand.
25:11And then I set the laser to one.
25:17It has several lasers, several levels.
25:20But this is the booster level.
25:23And literally, you just do this.
25:26This is an addition to my services.
25:29And we just do it for about five minutes, four to five minutes.
25:32And it tightens the skin.
25:35It rebuilds the collagen.
25:39And we have to take care of all of our skin.
25:47And it doesn't, you don't feel anything.
25:54So you see how you want your face snatched?
25:56Everything's got to be snatched.
25:57Everything's got to be snatched.
25:58Hands, arms, legs.
26:05And then once you're done with this.
26:14Then wipe this off.
26:16And you rinse your hands off.
26:20And then you'll wash that.
26:22And then I go in with my collagen jelly.
26:25This is like my go-to.
26:27Collagen jelly.
26:28It's so, so, so, so, so yummy.
26:32So good.
26:35Then we just finish it off like this.
26:40And then you, there you have it.
26:42You have a youthful, beautiful, tight, beautiful French with a little bit of bedazzlement.
26:55Do you guys have any questions?
26:58Does anybody?
26:59Yes.
27:04How are you with your name?
27:06Where are you from?
27:08Fire.
27:09Fire.
27:11Yes.
27:12Yeah.
27:14Yes.
27:16I'm always hiring.
27:18So the thing about it is I have a panel called Beauty Unlocked and we are touring right now.
27:26We just left the BET Awards where we give so much information.
27:29I'll give you guys my Instagram.
27:31You can message me.
27:33There's an email in my bio and that's where they submit their resumes and they submit whatever it is that
27:38their dreams are.
27:38But the thing is the industry is so broad and no one really shares information.
27:44And I am a mentor and an employer and an educator.
27:49So she can email me.
27:51We can have a chat.
27:52I can go over her.
27:53And she doesn't have to have fashion experience.
27:55I just one of my first assistants who was on salary just got signed to a really large agency after
28:01working with me for just like two years, which is not a long time in fashion at all.
28:05So she can email me and I can guide her through the entire thing because it's not just like celebrity.
28:12People are like, I want to do celebrity.
28:14But yes, I love doing everyone.
28:16But I have accounts like Tiffany, Chopard, Victoria's Secret.
28:20And these things, they're always selling product.
28:23There's always hands.
28:24So I'm always hiring.
28:25She's an esthetician.
28:26So I have lymphatic drainage.
28:28I have hair.
28:29I have makeup.
28:30I have skin.
28:31I have lash text.
28:32All that I employ.
28:33Okay.
28:34So yeah.
28:34So my Instagram is nailglam, at nailglam.
28:38N-A-I-L-G-L-A-M.
28:40And then in the bio is my email.
28:45Okay.
28:46Thank you so much.
28:47Thank you guys.
28:48Oh, yes.
28:49Can I get...
28:52You look so nice.
28:55I follow you.
28:56But how has the rise of press-ons shaped your business?
29:01Press-ons is the future, in my opinion.
29:04Okay.
29:04It's the future, in my opinion, because a lot of women are like really busy, on the go,
29:11entrepreneurs, moms.
29:13And the time...
29:14I love the salon experience, but the time in the salon kind of is sometimes not...
29:20It doesn't work.
29:21So press-ons...
29:23I make press-ons.
29:23I sell press-ons.
29:25I make press-ons.
29:26So I just think it's preference.
29:27And I think there's so many people in the world that you just have to find your niche.
29:31And if you are a nail artist and you feel like it's affecting your business, create press-ons.
29:37And teach your clients how to put them on so that they can last but they buy it from you.
29:41Do you have a lot of employees that are doing specifically press-ons for your business,
29:46for like either the houses or the shows?
29:48So when I'm doing shows, we have to make 70 sets of press-ons for the models.
29:52So I have like a full team and we have to design it, figure out what the fabric is, figure
29:57out what the designer wants.
29:58And then we create all of the press-ons like a few days before.
30:01Okay.
30:01And then we just use it for the shows.
30:03But then day-to-day, there's people who, like some celebrity clients like Ariana Grande.
30:07I have my assistant make press-ons for her.
30:10She loves a press-on, but she puts it on the way I put that on with the gel so
30:15that it lasts.
30:16But it's still a press-on.
30:17Yeah.
30:17Yeah.
30:18Thank you so much.
30:19You're welcome.
30:20I'm going to talk to you after this.
30:21I have another person.
30:22Okay.
30:22Okay.
30:23Thank you guys.
30:25Thank you for coming and hanging out with me.
30:26I had a great time.
30:27Thank you so much.
30:28Thank you, Beautycon, and thank you, Essence Fest.
30:30Bye!
