00:00If I look back on my career, which I'm old enough to do now, I feel like I've been building
00:04slowly and painstakingly with a massive mortgage, a block of flats.
00:09Each book is a flat and I rent it out and the money that I get is loyalties.
00:15These big tech bros have moved into my flats, kicked me out and are charging rent for my work.
00:21When I found out from Lucy that actually how they did it was to send squadrons of probably underpaid people
00:30out to find books in op shops, rip their spines off and free the pages into scanners, I was really
00:37shocked.
00:38Because I'm a writer, I imagine them wearing balaclavas. This is a very surreptitious thing to do.
00:45Anthropic has been here lobbying our government to get rid of copyright. They are not acting in good faith.
00:50They've tried it on and Hollywood sent them packing in California, but they haven't come to rights holders here in
00:56this room and the groups that represent us.
00:59It's not difficult to negotiate consent and payment. They just haven't done it. They don't want to do it. They
01:04want to gut the system.
01:05We know that big tech are roaming the halls here, but we know that Australians will not support a weakening
01:11of copyright law.
01:12So to the government, we say, don't back down. Do not sign our rights away.
01:17And to big tech, we say, ask us, get permission, pay us. We are here, ready to do deals with
01:23you.
