A simple discussion as The Junkies Hit the Skins today to look at the NFL Top 100: Are the Commanders just lacking talent?
Transcript
00:00So we wanted to get into this top 100 list that our friend Pete Prisco from CBSSports.com put out.
00:07He has the top 100 players entering the 2026 season in the NFL,
00:13and we wanted to touch on the commanders that are on this list.
00:17But before that, let's get to his top 10 players.
00:20We'll go from 10 to 1.
00:22At number 10, he has Lamar Jackson from the Baltimore Ravens.
00:26How many quarterbacks are in the top 10?
00:29Four, probably four, I'm guessing.
00:31There are five, it appears to be.
00:35Five quarterbacks in the top 10.
00:38So you got Lamar.
00:40All right, we know who the rest are going to be.
00:42Lamar at 10.
00:43You got Puka Nakua checking in at number 9.
00:46He led the NFL in catches last year with 129.
00:50You see where he was last year?
00:52He had Puka ranked as his number 63 player.
00:55He jumped all the way to 9.
00:57Yes.
00:57Now, when you have 130 catches, that'll probably get you up there.
01:00Yep.
01:01It vaults you up the list, no doubt.
01:03Eight is another wide receiver.
01:05He has Justin Jefferson from the Vikings.
01:08He only had two touchdowns and 84 catches last year.
01:12He was a victim of poor quarterback play.
01:13They bring in Kyler Murray.
01:16Looks like he will probably be the starter at the beginning of the season.
01:20So he should have better quarterback play heading into 2026.
01:24Poor J.J. McCarthy.
01:25Just never really getting a shot.
01:27Injuries, poor play.
01:29I mean, I guess McCarthy could technically beat out Kyler Murray in preseason camp and be the starter.
01:35But if he does, he's going to be on a very short leash if he doesn't perform.
01:39Would you take Justin Jefferson in the first round 12-team draft after last year?
01:45If I'm picking in the 10-12 range and he's there, yes.
01:49But if I'm picking in the top five or seven, no.
01:53But in years past, he would have been a top five.
01:55Oh, in years past, he would have been a top two or three pick.
01:57Yep.
01:57He's that good.
01:58So he's at number eight on this list.
02:00Coming in at number seven, another quarterback, Patrick Mahomes.
02:03Last season, he was ranked number one.
02:05He's coming off a torn ACL, and the Chiefs missed the playoffs this past season.
02:09So we have to see how Mahomes recovers from that ACL tear.
02:13At number six, he has an offensive lineman, Penny Sewell, from the Detroit Lions.
02:18He was ranked number 21 last season.
02:21He lauds his ability to pave the way in the rushing game for the Lions.
02:26That's why Jameer Gibbs, Montgomery have been so successful.
02:30We know Montgomery has moved on from the Lions, obviously.
02:33He landed in Houston, I believe.
02:36I believe it was Houston.
02:38It's a good fit for him, especially with Joe Mixon being sidelined.
02:41Here's your top five.
02:43Joe Burrow comes in at number five for the Cincinnati Bengals,
02:46close to his ranking last year of number seven.
02:48His running mate, Jamar Chase, at number four.
02:52He just puts up bomb numbers every year.
02:54He has 252 catches over the past two seasons to lead all NFL wide receivers
03:00over the last two seasons.
03:01Now you're in your rarefied air, your top three, according to Pete Prisco.
03:05Number three, Josh Allen from the Bills.
03:07He's going to have a new offensive coordinator, new head coach, Joe Brady,
03:12running the show in Buffalo.
03:14And your top two players on Pete Prisco's list, both play for the same team.
03:20He has Matt Stafford at number two, the Rams quarterback,
03:25who led the league in passing yards and touchdowns last year.
03:29And at number one, leaves Myles Garrett, the player that they acquired in a trade,
03:34Myles Garrett, who broke the single season sack record with 23 sacks.
03:39It's crazy.
03:39They've got the top two.
03:41And they might get Aaron Donald back.
03:43Because Aaron Donald, the latest I've seen is he is mauling a return.
03:48Is he?
03:48He wants to play with Myles.
03:50Well, just probably.
03:53And possibly get back to another Super Bowl favorite.
03:55Yeah.
03:57So with the.
03:58Imagine facing a front with Aaron Donald and Myles Garrett.
04:01No.
04:02And I'm guessing Aaron Donald probably hasn't fallen off that much,
04:06even though he was out.
04:07Always see videos of him working out.
04:09So in this list of 100 players heading into the NFL season, 2026,
04:14how many commanders do you guys believe or guess are on this list?
04:18And where would you have them slotted?
04:20I heard the answer.
04:22I would have guessed three, but I don't know where I would have slotted.
04:26I would have slotted Jaden higher than he is.
04:28But this is all based on last year, too.
04:31Right.
04:31I would guess three.
04:33And I would guess Jaden, Terry.
04:37And then on defense, do they have a time?
04:42Maybe it's only two.
04:44Maybe it's only two.
04:45I'll guess two.
04:46It is only two.
04:47But the second one that you mentioned is not the one that is on this list.
04:51So Jaden Daniels comes in highest on the list.
04:54He comes in at number 69.
04:56And Pete wrote up after an impressive rookie season,
04:59injuries limited him to seven starts in 2025.
05:02Where was he the year before?
05:03He was ranked at number 33.
05:05So he dropped 30 spots.
05:0730 plus spots.
05:08He says even when he was on the field, the numbers weren't as good.
05:11But he has the talent to soar back up this list.
05:15So Jaden Daniels is your first of two commanders on this list of top 100 players.
05:20The second is another offensive player.
05:23It's Laramie Tunsil.
05:25Oh, yeah.
05:25I was sleeping on offensive line.
05:27Coming in at number 76.
05:29He says he was consistent last year in both the run game and pass protection.
05:33But he really excels as a pass blocker protecting the blind side.
05:38Last season was not ranked.
05:39So he breaks the top 80 in Pete Prisco's list.
05:43Terry McLaurin not on this list.
05:45He probably was ranked from last year.
05:47He had to have been ranked based on what he had in 24.
05:51I mean, he put up huge numbers.
05:52Right.
05:53Touchdown numbers anyway.
05:55So is that, do you think that's right that the commanders only have two players ranked
05:59in his top 100 list?
06:00Because based on last season, they were dreadful last season.
06:03I think that seems about right.
06:04I don't think there should be outrage if there's only two commanders listed in the top 100.
06:10I think they have more potential to have guys make the top 100 next season.
06:16Right.
06:16Like they're going to have to produce.
06:17Like if Adafi Owe comes in and has 13 and a half sacks and is a defensive terror and,
06:23you know, justifies getting, I think he got 68 million guaranteed.
06:2768, right.
06:27On his 100 million deal.
06:28He'll be on his top 100 next year.
06:30Like he'll be on that list.
06:31Maybe Sonny Stiles is so impressive as a rookie that he makes this list this time next summer.
06:37Chig could.
06:38Chig could.
06:39Chanel could.
06:39I mean, there's a bunch of guys that they are bringing in to bolster this defense that
06:45could potentially be on this list next year.
06:48Be a stretch to believe Chanel would make the top 100 players because it's so heavily
06:52skewed offense.
06:53You knew, I mean, five out of the top 10 are quarterbacks.
06:57Yeah.
06:57And I'm sure in the top 100, there's probably a dozen quarterbacks.
07:01I would assume.
07:03I mean, I haven't listed by position, but I'm sure the quarterbacks are well represented.
07:08I don't think this is last year.
07:10I'm not really sure where we're getting that from.
07:12I mean, he has Fred Warner ranked in the same spot as he had the previous year.
07:15And Fred Warner played like five games last year.
07:17And there's lots of guys.
07:19There's lots of guys.
07:19I mean, I think it, I mean, injuries are going to be part of it, but I think, you know,
07:25guys
07:25like Terry have kind of fallen off a little bit.
07:28Tunzel still playing great.
07:29Jayden wasn't great last year when he played.
07:31He was fine.
07:32Wasn't great.
07:32Yeah.
07:33But it was, that was based on only playing seven games.
07:35I'm sure they were two and four with the games he started.
07:38I know, but he, if he played the entire season, his numbers wouldn't have been good enough.
07:41He would have been 69.
07:43I thought Jayden would be like top 50.
07:44I'm, I'm pretty surprised he's down almost at 70 with his ranking, but it's heavily weighted.
07:51I think from what they did last year.
07:53Clearly, that's why Terry McLaurin falls off.
07:55Yeah.
07:56Yeah.
07:57Well, I mean, Caleb, Caleb's still behind Jayden.
07:59Caleb, Adam, in the deep playoffs last year.
08:02He should, he probably, Pete Prisco doesn't believe in him.
08:06No, but there, he has them listed as 69 and 70.
08:09They're back to back on this list.
08:12Hmm.
08:15Well, I mean, I guess I'm not surprised that there's only two.
08:18I mean, you're not going to have any defensive players.
08:20Yeah.
08:20You can't, you can't name defensive players to this list from a team that gave up like
08:26384 yards of, of offense per game.
08:28But Jayden will go, he will rise.
08:31He will go from 69.
08:32He will go up the list after this year.
08:34Yeah.
08:35I hope.
08:36I mean, that's what, that's exactly what Prisco said.
08:38He says he has the talent to soar back up this list.
08:41Where's somebody like Justin Herbert?
08:44I'd have to look.
08:45I don't exactly know where he is.
08:47I see Brock Purdy's at 75.
08:50He's got Baker Mayfield at 80.
08:54Hmm.
08:55I'm guessing Herbert's in the top 50.
08:59But I don't, I don't see Herbert.
09:00He's got Jason's guy, Drake May at 61.
09:04Should be higher.
09:06He has Justin Herbert at 63.
09:08Yeah, there you are.
09:08It's the top 60.
09:10He's got AJ Brown at number 64 after being ranked number 31 last season.
09:16So he's taking a bit of a tumble down the list.
09:20But the guys that are up top, the top 10, I mean, those are guys that are always going
09:25to be the top 10, especially Jamar Chase.
09:26Look, right now, entering the season, it's hard to say that Washington has top tier talent
09:35beyond Jaden Daniels.
09:37They've brought in all these guys on defense, but they got to, they got to prove it.
09:41Like always never done it really to the level that you're talking about cakes, where it
09:46could be a top 100 player.
09:48It's almost a potential play.
09:49I mean, he's had production in the league, but not to the extent of being an all pro or
09:53anything like that.
09:54I think he needs, he needs to have like 12 to 14 sacks.
09:59He needs to be in that sort of range.
10:01He has to be better than like what you used to get out of Brian Arakpo.
10:05Right.
10:06Which was okay.
10:07He would, he would consistently give you 10 or 11 sacks per year.
10:11It just wasn't special.
10:12Right.
10:13You want one or two of these guys who they brought in to be special.
10:16This is kind of surprising.
10:17He didn't have Jackson Smith and Jigba ranked last year and he had him 13 this year, purely
10:23based off what he did last year.
10:25Yeah.
10:25But I'm kind of surprised that he didn't have him ranked in the top 100 last year.
10:31It was probably just, he wasn't high on Sam Darnold being the quarterback in Seattle.
10:37Didn't know that he was going to help lead them to the Superbowl and win the Superbowl.
10:40Yeah.
10:41But he was still one of the best receivers in the league.
10:45Maybe the numbers.
10:46He hadn't really broken through yet.
10:47Yeah, he did.
10:47Like be, he was ascending, but he wasn't like a star.
10:50Last year he hit a bomb.
10:51Last season he showed that he's a superstar.
10:53Yeah.
10:55Is this a knock against Adam Peters?
10:59That he only has two guys that are in the top 100?
11:01Now this is an opinion top 100, by the way.
11:03I mean, I'd have to go look and add up all the players from each team, but I mean, there
11:09are probably other teams that only have a couple guys.
11:12But yeah, I'd say a little bit.
11:14I would say yes, it's kind of a knock.
11:16I'd say it's a slight knock on Adam Peters that there aren't more than two guys on this
11:19list.
11:20And only one guy that he drafted in Jaden Daniels.
11:23I know when we had this, the discussion after the first year when they made it all the
11:28way to the NFC championship game, we thought Frankie Louvoo was a defensive player who was
11:33worthy of maybe getting in the top 100 last year, down year.
11:38Like I said, next year, if it's only two, then that's a huge knock.
11:42Because next year they should have a couple of guys on the defense and hopefully a couple
11:46guys on the offense.
11:48And Chegg could be that guy.
11:49Like, I don't know how many tight ends made the top 100.
11:52If he delivers in the way that you expect him to deliver, then he should be a top 100 player.
11:58I just, I feel like I'm, I'm building the case too much for Chegg Okonkwo.
12:03Like I, I expect him to do well, but maybe I'm expecting a little too much out of him.
12:08You're expecting bigger numbers than he might put up there.
12:10Yeah.
12:11Well, I think he, but there's, look, I think he's going to have a good year.
12:14There's a void left by Zach hurts.
12:16Like we know that Jaden Daniels, he likes to throw to incorporate the tight end.
12:20Hopefully it's the same in the blouse system.
12:21Like tight ends are used a lot in that system.
12:24I think Chegg's going to have a big opportunity in front of him to have a big year here.
12:30He's going to be playing with the best quarterback he's ever played with in the NFL in Jaden Daniels.
12:35Yeah.
12:36In his short career.
12:37Don't you think Drake London should be higher than 96?
12:40I just think again, quarterback uncertainty probably hurts him a little bit in Atlanta with
12:46Penix coming back from the injury, he signed to a, to a deal, but he's still the great,
12:50greatest quarterback play.
12:52But he still has the talent.
12:53Oh, absolutely.
12:54I think he's a better than 96 in terms of his talent.
12:57Right.
12:58We tend to agree.
12:58If you're basing on the numbers, yeah, it comes off what the quarterback's doing, but
13:02I think he's better than 96 on this list.
