00:00Parents at Hazelwood Community Primary School in Wide Open are celebrating after the school's
00:06adjudicator rejected plans to close the school and merge it with nearby greenfields.
00:12Families who campaigned against the proposal say the decision recognises the strength of
00:17their community. North Tyneside Council has argued falling pupil numbers and the cost
00:22of replacing reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete made closure necessary. The council
00:28says the adjudicator acknowledged the buildings cannot remain in use indefinitely
00:32and confirmed it is reviewing the ruling before deciding its next steps. While school
00:38leaders thanked parents, staff and supporters for standing together throughout the campaign.
