00:00There were angry scenes at a North Tyneside Council meeting as plans to merge several
00:06schools were approved. Members of the public walked out after councillors agreed to merge
00:12Greenfields and Hazelwood Primary Schools with pupils moving by 2028. Shouts from the
00:18gallery raised concerns about asbestos. The council says asbestos is managed safely and
00:23legally. It also approved merging Forest Hall with Ivory Road Primary School. Council leaders
00:29say falling pupil numbers, building issues and finances forced difficult but necessary
00:35decisions, pledging support for families during transitions while consultation responses were
00:40considered. Further options remain under review elsewhere.
