This Fourth of July, we’re raising a glass to two kinds of independence: American freedom and Dave’s refusal to admit any sauce is better than gravy. The Americano is the perfect tribute—an Italian classic with just enough red, white, and bittersweet to celebrate both the holiday and Dave’s roots. Consider it a toast to America with a distinctly Italian accent. 🇺🇸🇮🇹🍹

00:28welcome to bottoms up um what we're doing us a pretty cool drink lauren yes i'm discombobulated
00:34because that was giving me lots of trouble i gotta lock it up lock it up okay
00:40we are celebrating july 4th and it's the 250th anniversary um i was gonna do something of our
00:48great nation of our great nation yes i'm thinking about the drink what we need to talk can i talk
00:53about the drink yeah come on do i get to tell some stories about this go ahead so we're doing
00:58a drink called the americano now it's not the coffee americano it's the boozy americano right
01:04but very similarly it's a watered down version right yes you know the story goes the american
01:10soldiers in italy the coffee was too strong yes so the italians watered it down for them and called it
01:17the americano and similarly a wink and a smile this drink um so this drink is a an old drink
01:24like goes
01:25back to like the 1800s i think in italy and they just used you know their traditional campari and
01:31they use some uh sweet vermouth yeah and then they topped it off with some soda water that's it and
01:38that's it and it was a sort of a precursor to the drink we all know the negroni yeah all
01:44right so we're
01:44gonna make it so it's not a negroni this preceded the negroni and it was the count of the negroni
01:49who's
01:49like can we just make it can can we can we replace the water with gin please and give it
01:54some punch but
01:55we're not doing that we're doing the americano um there's also a james bond connection and i'm not
02:01getting into that so you just get a nice uh tall glass it's always known as a highball we're gonna
02:07fill it with ice yeah i'm making a mess here doesn't matter but we're gonna fill it with ice
02:16and you again it's one of these uh one of these things you probably can't even hear it i bet
02:21you
02:21can all right whatever okay oh that's a little sticky gotta clean the tops really good so we're
02:26gonna do one and a half i've filled it right in the uh glass one and a half ounces of
02:31the campari right in
02:32the glass some tunes or something and then you're gonna put in your favorite um sweet vermouth i
02:51happen to love dolan yeah but you know there are plenty of brands out there this is martini and rossi
02:56which is actually you know what lbf we're gonna use punta mace which is not a true vermouth sweet
03:04vermouth um but it is but it also has an uh a bitter taste oh great just what i want
03:11so we're
03:12we're gonna up the bitter the bitterness why are we upping the bitter on the birth of our nation
03:16it's good it wakes you up you know just like you woke up the rest of the world yeah uh
03:22-huh
03:22i like how that circular solid woke me up so equal parts we're gonna do
03:31okay so that's it uh one and a half i don't know if i'm gonna like this oh you're gonna
03:35like it
03:36you're gonna like it trust me you're gonna like it i'm telling you right now you're gonna like it
03:41okay can you smell it smell that i wish i should smell it it smells good and then you just
03:47take
03:48some soda water i have club soda here and you're gonna go flat quicker you're gonna fill the rest
03:54of that glass okay this is very simple you're gonna give it a nice stir
04:03not nothing crazy because we want to preserve the bubbles as much as possible
04:15and we're gonna put out but we already have a little garnish here ready to go nice orange right
04:22in there lay it right in there and look at that yeah that's pretty that's your americano yeah right
04:27there and try it see i love it you're gonna try it lbf i made it special for you thank
04:33you so much
