00:00rude the most reliable heating and air conditioning products in the dmv jason good to catch up with
00:04you on free agency day in the nba how are you i'm doing good i can't complain this has been
00:10probably the craziest off season of my time covering the league so far and i feel like
00:14it's not over yet so here we go it's just getting started and it is amazing how this sport just
00:19dominates the headlines i feel like every year we say this one was wilder than the last but yeah
00:23it's been nuts and being here with the wizards where they just had the number one pick and
00:27involved in a lot of these rumors it has been a blast but let's just start with lebron we found
00:31out that he's going to play year 24 it will not be with the lakers he's informed them thusly is
00:37it the
00:37warriors could there be another team how do you see all of this going yeah this whole thing was so
00:42strange that there was a lot of noise coming out the last couple weeks that the lakers didn't want
00:48him but i was so hesitant to embrace that simply because of the fact that lebron is still really
00:54good the warriors need good basketball players lebron's 42 probably doesn't want to move so
00:58you'd think that all signs would have pointed in that direction but apparently the sides were just
01:04too far apart and here we are i i keep coming back to golden state simply because i think there
01:09are
01:09some disqualifying factors with the other teams involved like to me the cleveland thing especially
01:16when you're getting these statements from uh from lebron's camp about you know through shams and
01:22dave mcmenneman about how he wants to have fun like this is going to be about happiness happiness
01:27to me doesn't seem like standing in the corner while donovan mitchell and james harden run 50 pick
01:32and rolls a game so like i don't understand why cleveland makes much basketball sense it's also far
01:38away from his wife and daughter miami similarly far away from his wife and daughter in a similarly clunky
01:45basketball fit golden state just checks every box in the sense that they're close to home
01:50they're going to be able to pay him a decent amount with that mid-level exception it makes a lot
01:55of
01:55sense on the floor basketball wise in terms of him enjoying playing with steph curry and the ability
02:01to have the ball in his hands while not necessarily needing to score a ton like it's a very natural
02:06basketball fit for him and i think it's a great fit off the court in the sense that these are
02:12all his
02:12buddies and if you're going to do another season at age 42 and the back-to-backs and the road
02:17trips
02:18and the the flights and the team dinners and stuff just seems like a lot more fun with draymond and
02:24steve kerr and steph curry than going with some kind of huge generational gap or or some other kind
02:31of funky group of personalities so i you know obviously it's been reported that he's going to
02:36take meetings and or at least rich is going to take meetings and he's going to canvas the league but
02:42to me all signs point to golden state is there another basketball foot out there that people aren't
02:47talking about yeah in terms of pure basketball fit the one that makes a ton of sense to me is
02:52san
02:53antonio i one of the one of the the the gifts that lebron has is a lot of times when
02:59players are
03:00making decisions in the middle of the floor they're good at like oh they helped off the corner i can
03:06throw to the corner oh they helped off the wing i can throw to the wing lebron is uniquely gifted
03:10at
03:11feeding bigs he just always has been even in this weird role alongside luca where he was doing
03:17it attacking closeouts a lot of the time he was like the only laker who could drive a closeout and
03:21hit eight nerve jackson for drop-off dunks because he just has a really natural feel for that interior
03:28passing and so the idea of pairing him alongside victor wembanyama as a guy who could get him
03:34opportunities closer to the basket who could be the grown-up with the basketball in close games late
03:40they straight up have a hole at power forward i thought that was one of their downsides against new
03:46york specifically was even though victor is so tall i thought they were out like kind of physically
03:51outmatched on the perimeter just by the size of new york and i think lebron could address that
03:56the thing that i always come back to there is it's just kind of the weirdest narrative fit i don't
04:03know
04:03if i'm victor wembanyama if i want my first championship attached to lebron james of all people
04:08and so even though it's a great basketball fit i'd love to see lebron playing in the western
04:13conference finals in some really big games i just think that there's just too much weirdness
04:18surrounding that situation and then as i mentioned like darren fox is your oldest rotation player there
04:23and he would have been the seventh oldest new york nick to give you some perspective so like
04:28there's a similar generational gap there that i think would be strange for lebron as he's navigating
04:33the 82. jason timph on grant and danny nba free agency getting underway which doesn't mean what it
04:41used to but that doesn't mean there's less news because there's just trades and rumors and it's
04:44still amazing jason's the host of hoops tonight for the volume sports what about anthony davis and
04:50the wizards i just saw that mark spears is saying that the wizards aren't interested in trading anthony
04:56davis we know that rich paul came out and tried to get the ball rolling some momentum for lebron
05:02the golden state with draymond and steph and that anthony davis could join them there the little fly
05:06in the ointment is the wizards have to want to trade him too how do you think that ends yeah
05:12you
05:12know it's interesting because i think there's quote unquote fly in the ointment both directions in the
05:16sense that i don't think necessarily the warriors want anthony davis i think rich paul and lebron james
05:23want anthony davis in golden state and so it's created this interesting dynamic where okay if i'm lebron
05:29and again i'm just going to go play one or two more seasons in this ultimately like uh felt like
05:36i'm going to make this decision purely based on happiness and enjoying my time on and off the
05:41court man anthony davis makes a ton of sense right let's get another buddy on there on those uh flights
05:47across the country and the team dinners and all of that like that makes a ton of sense right but
05:51for
05:52golden state i like look at their front court rotation like even without lebron right now you have
05:57gi santos yaksa lendenberg draymond green al horford and christoph's porzingis all in house
06:02so you add lebron to that i've got and that's not counting quinton post either so like add lebron to
06:08that i've got three power forwards and four centers before i even get to anthony davis so like there's
06:13kind of like this this dynamic where i could understand the wizards being like hey why am i giving
06:22you anthony davis on the cheap when i have some short-term utility for him and you're desperate
06:30but if i'm the warriors i'm very much not desperate because i have the deep i have an incredibly deep
06:35front court rotation already so like the way i look at it is that to me that move is probably
06:41secondary to the lebron move and what i mean by that is first of all those warriors picks guys i
06:47don't
06:47think there's a better asset in the league draft wise over the course of the next few years steph is
06:53what 38 uh uh in uh in lebron's going to be 42 i think steph turns 39 next season like
07:00these dudes
07:00are old they got two years tops the 2029 warriors first is a fantastic asset that team that team doesn't
07:08have anything to uh to have any sort of competitive roster after this specific attempt to put a
07:16contender together so like i would argue if this thing settles either before training camp or at
07:23the deadline with jimmy butler plus a 2029 golden state first that's a fantastic return for anthony
07:30davis i'd argue that's a better return than any uh anything they sent out to get anthony davis to
07:36begin with so we'll see i know it appears on the surface like the warriors are the desperate team there
07:41but i don't think they are because frankly i don't think the warriors necessarily are into that idea
07:46as much as clutch sports is but ultimately you could see rich paul you know the one thing that's
07:52super weird about this is we've just seen rich paul and anthony davis get kind of skeevy with the way
07:56they behave around the trade demand so i'm hoping especially for the wizard's sakes that that that
08:01that doesn't happen but we've already seen ad make some really strange quotes since he went to
08:07washington and frankly if he doesn't want to be there y'all have a lot to be excited about
08:11i love trey johnson i like queshawn george trey young actually is even though he's a flawed
08:16player is actually one of my favorite flawed players to watch in the league i was huge on
08:21aj debonso over darren peterson i'm very glad washington went that direction alex r i think
08:25is one of the most underrated under discussed young players in the league washington's got a
08:30bright future regardless of what happens with ad they're going to be fine so jason there is talk of
08:35an extension for for anthony davis and it's for all an awful lot of money and i've been arguing it
08:40seems like to deaf ears to my colleagues around here that i don't know that the extension means
08:45sort of like indigo montoya style i don't think it means what we think it means in other words
08:49today or used to be you sign an extension that means the guy's here he's part of the furniture
08:53he's the plan we're building around him now i think it's just kind of what you have to do
08:57to eventually facilitate a trade right i mean so what would it mean if davis does sign an extension here
09:02does that mean they're now he's part of the plan or is he part of the plan in the sense
09:06they're going to ship him at some point oh man i'm going to be honest with you guys and i
09:12understand
09:12that this is uh in the context of the lebron golden state discussion it's going to come off
09:19as biased but it's the honest to god truth i think ad is more tradable now than he's ever going
09:23to be
09:24if you extend him on some sort of expensive deal okay uh as someone who rooted closely for anthony
09:29davis when he was with the lakers 2024 was the only real good season he had after the uh uh
09:37after
09:37the championship 2021 he breaks down before the end of the season 2022 he breaks down in the middle
09:42of the season they miss the playoffs 2023 he gets his butt kicked by nicole yokich in the conference
09:48finals like just completely outclassed by him 2024 is the year where he was healthy all year he played
09:5470 something games legitimately was awesome in the first round the lakers that was one of the
09:59closest five game series you'll see they led late in like every single game in that series
10:03anthony davis was great and then 2025 again he breaks down and uh like it just has become a a
10:11thing with
10:12anthony davis where there's a certain amount of injury history with him where if he's on a like the
10:20thing the warriors is if they trade for anthony davis what they're thinking is we've got this short
10:25window of time to contend with him maybe we work out an extension but we're going to be bad anyway
10:30so like if we're going to be bad we can take on bad money and absorb uh those types of
10:36contracts to
10:37try to recoup draft compensation if we end up trading picks and uh trading picks to try to build around
10:42lebron and a uh lebron ad and steph they're in a different position to be able to handle anthony davis
10:48as an albatross contract whereas washington it's fundamentally different you guys are ascending you're
10:54ascending in a in a uh a real direction towards trying to compete in the league and so i honestly
11:01think like what even if it's not like even if it's not golden sailor like let's say boston calls up
11:07and
11:07goes we want anthony davis like i think that washington should be looking to trade anthony davis
11:13before giving him some sort of extension unless the extension is team favorable like if it's in the
11:20ballpark of 40 million a year or less now what you're talking about is near market value for a
11:26center because starting centers in the league you know make between 30 and 40 million so in this era
11:31under the cba so like i think a lot of it just depends on what the extension is but if
11:36he's asking
11:36for four years 280 i'd run like the wind yeah you and me both i'm with you on that how
11:41about the
11:41kawaii leonard trade today clippers nearing a deal reportedly to send him back to the raptors
11:47brandon ingram grady dick two first rounders a big swap two second rounders reaction to that
11:54the draft compensation was crazy on that deal i was legitimately very surprised but i think part of
12:00the reason for that is because they didn't really send out any rotation talent like if you include a
12:05colin murray boils or an rj barrett even i think the draft compensation comes down considerably but i love
12:12this deal for toronto i like my thing is like in that conference it's gettable the conference is
12:17gettable like i know the knicks won the title but i view them as a second tier contender
12:21yannis in miami to me second tier contender boston a barring any sort of splashy move second tier
12:28contender same thing goes for detroit same thing goes for cleveland those are all beatable teams and
12:34you take that toronto team with how good colin murray boils looked at the switching five and as just a
12:39menace around the basket on offense uh that first round series scotty barnes looking like one of the
12:45better you know kind of young ascending talents in the league especially in the playoff context
12:50the two-way player yeah i jacoby walter and rj barrett and you know emmanuel quickly had the
12:56hamstring injury he was out you just simply take brandon ingram who played terrible in that series
13:02and then missed the end of it and you replace him with kawhi leonard who in it like just in
13:07basic
13:08form like oh he's an awesome spot up guy so he can play off the ball off of scotty barnes
13:12just as
13:13a catch and shoot player a guy who can be a reliable late game scoring option for them
13:17to me kawhi leonard scotty barnes and collier murray boils with rj barrett uh you know in jamal
13:23shed or whoever it is that they play at point guard that is a nasty switching defensive lineup that
13:28doesn't really have any weak point other than the guards in which you're going to be going against
13:32lanky defenders on the back line i just think that's a really fun team i don't know that i'd
13:37put them above specifically new york or boston but i like that team more than cleveland i like
13:43that team more than detroit i like that team more than indiana when they come back you know
13:47with all the tyrese halliburton weirdness with his illness like i i think that team is is is very
13:53capable of winning the eastern conference jace i gotta ask you about lamella ball uh normally if
13:58you get a guy that shoots 37 from three average 20 points a game seven plus assists uh and you
14:04know
14:04averages more than a steal per game and it's pretty dynamic entering his prime years sold for a bunch
14:09of future picks you'd kind of scratch your head but people are doing spin kicks who are following
14:13this league uh on charlotte's behalf and kind of scratching their head for minnesota just quantify
14:18what we saw there yeah that's kind of where i landed too i i it's weird i i'm gonna i'm
14:24a little
14:24bit more pessimistic on the deal for both sides i know everyone loves the deal for charlotte
14:29and look i i like a lot of things about charlotte i really do uh but i think that lamella
14:36ball was
14:37kind of the unique straw that stirred the drink so to speak in the sense that he was the guy
14:42who
14:43would be initially breaking down the defense in a way where i think brandon miller and con knipple
14:48in all of the shooting that they got in all of the like even calc brenner and diabate what they
14:53did
14:54as offensive rebounders all of it stemmed from the initial chaos that lamella ball created
14:59and their offense fell off the cliff when he was off the floor last year and what i keep thinking
15:03about is like okay cool you don't like lamella ball's personality fine which and again i'm not
15:08i'm i don't profess to be the biggest lamella ball fan either but like you take him off that team
15:13you end up in a playoff series and it's like who's your five okay kobe white con knipple brandon miller
15:19naz reed and diabate who's breaking down an elite defense who's the guy that's picking on a switch
15:25against toronto and getting the defense in rotation who's the guy that is going to consistently
15:31again break down an elite eastern conference playoff defense and now you could tell me lamella
15:38is not that guy either but my thing is like lamella at the very least was the initial kind of
15:44like
15:45offensive force for that team that everyone played off of so i actually expect charlotte to go
15:50back a level as a playoff team don't don't get me wrong they might win some regular season games but
15:56they strike me as a first round exit type of team next year and then for minnesota you gave up
16:00all
16:00your front court physicality in julius randall and naz reed and i think anthony edwards is a bad
16:07defensive player at the guard position right now he's really good at guarding one-on-one if it was
16:10the king on the king of the court contest he'd be the best guy in the league but that's not
16:14basketball
16:14it's about navigating screens and defending off ball and being attentive when things are whirling around you
16:20and he's bad at that and then lamella ball is just legitimately terrible at everything on defense
16:24so like i i think they're bad defensively in the backcourt they literally don't have a power forward
16:29now like maybe they get a tobias harris or somebody that um uh that does an adequate job of filling
16:35that
16:35position but to me the on the minnesota side it was a risk that had a small chance of upside
16:41but a
16:41larger chance of them becoming worse and again this was a team who won five playoff series in the last
16:47three years jason before we let you go we're talking to jason timp nba as we're minutes away
16:53from official free agency here one of the big needs for the wizard is clearly depth in the front court
16:58because sar is coming off of a surgery and hasn't been particularly durable yet as he's developing
17:04into a young star and obviously anthony davis may or may not be here for the long haul so some
17:09of the
17:09names being thrown around are like mitchell robinson marvin bagley zach collins i've seen mo vogner
17:13nick richards dwight powell andre drummond there are others anybody that you think's a particularly
17:19good fitter that you really like to see them link up with mitchell robinson would be fun i think he's
17:24the kind of guy specifically uh as a uh an achievable option because i think you don't necessarily have
17:31to pay a ton to poach him away from new york the other guy that you didn't mention that i
17:36would
17:36consider especially considering the um you know the potential fit alongside alex sar when he is
17:42healthy is john collins one of the things i like about john collins he's a very good rebounding for
17:48and uh you know like for instance there's a lot of players you know a lot of people are high
17:51on
17:52rui hachimura coming off of his playoff run and don't get me wrong if you leave rui hachimura open
17:56that thing's going in every single time he's a knockdown shooter but he's a terrible rebounder
18:00doesn't have a ton of utility outside of just strictly shooting open shots and so i think a guy like
18:06john collins is a guy that has turned into a reliable three-point shooter who also can you
18:11know let's imagine sar who can be a little thin and you know kind of mad he kind of is
18:15that four
18:16five hybrid in that sense john collins is the type of power forward that kind of makes him useful
18:21as a five not to mention john collins has played with trey young in the past and they have some
18:25chemistry together before we let you go jason this is a public service announcement you got a
18:30pickup game going and jason is there you put jason on your team you select jason
18:36timph i've been watching your highlight videos the entire time you're talking dude
18:39really impressive man thank you for joining us
