00:00The Kuching High Court yesterday sentenced a 16-year-old boy to six years in prison
00:05for causing a crash that claimed five lives.
00:09In doing so, Judicial Commissioner Farid Gokhim Abdullah set aside a 2025 magistrate's court order
00:16that committed the teenager to the Henry Gurney School.
00:20Farid substituted the ruling with a prison term dating back to June 16 last year
00:26and ordered that the boy be separated from adult inmates.
00:30The teenager pleaded guilty last year to two charges under the Road Transport Act 1987
00:37including causing death by reckless driving and driving underage.
00:42In January 2025, he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into two cars
00:48and two motorcycles along Jalastutong Baru in Kuching.
00:53Four victims died on the spot, another died while receiving treatment at Sarawak Hospital.
00:59The boy's father also pleaded guilty under the Child Act 2001
01:03to allowing his son to drive without supervision.
01:07The court fined him RM15,000 and ordered that he perform 100 hours of community service
01:13within the next six months.
