00:00Hello and welcome to Bargain Hunt, and today we're in Kent.
00:05At an antiques fair like this, there are lots of weird and wonderful objects to catch your
00:10eye.
00:11Some of them have you scratching your head, like this.
00:16What do you think it could be?
00:18It's made of silver, it has an intricate design, and there's a tiny indent on the tip, and
00:25it fits rather nicely in the palm of your hand.
00:30Any ideas?
00:31All will be revealed later in the show.
00:34But first, it's time to meet today's teams.
00:37Let's go bargain hunting!
01:01Today's shopping showdown is at this huge antiques fair in Dettling, and the Reds and
01:06Blues will be spoilt for choice.
01:08Each team will have £300 and just one hour on the clock to buy three items.
01:15One has got to be £75 or more.
01:18Then there is my challenge.
01:20The winning team is the team that makes the most profit in auction or makes the smallest
01:26loss.
01:28Let's meet today's teams.
01:30I'm Ru.
01:31I'm Yaz.
01:32Forehand.
01:33Backhand.
01:34We're going to ace this shot.
01:36I take it you like tennis.
01:38We actually met playing tennis at school.
01:41Yeah, and we've played ever since, pretty much.
01:43Will you make a good doubles team today?
01:45I'm going to go a bit mad and Yaz is going to try to rein you in.
01:48Yeah, I'm going to rein you in.
01:49Yeah.
01:49Poor Yaz.
01:51But how's your antiques knowledge?
01:53Minimal.
01:53Yeah, we've got hardly any knowledge.
01:56Sounds like you need all the help you can get.
01:58Let's meet your opposition.
02:01Hi, I'm Ben.
02:02And I'm Luke.
02:03Watch out, Reds.
02:03Because we're double trouble.
02:06Will being twins give you the edge?
02:08Definitely.
02:09We know everything about each other and we've got almost like a telepathy.
02:12Great minds think alike, but do you like the same things?
02:16So our tastes are not very similar, but we still find a mid-ground in between
02:20and we always share with each other what we both like.
02:23A harmonious pair.
02:25Are you competitive?
02:26We do ideally aim to get the golden gavel.
02:29I'm desperate for that golden gavel, so I'm going to look to have fun.
02:31But if time's running out and it's looking a little bit tense,
02:34then I'm going to lock in, seriously.
02:35These boys mean business.
02:37Let's get started.
02:39Hello, bargain hunters!
02:40Hello!
02:41Hello!
02:43Oh, you look excited, I must say.
02:46But you do need something very special.
02:49And that is...
02:50Money!
02:51Money!
02:51You need money, Reds.
02:53Who is going to be responsible?
02:55That'll be me.
02:56That's you, Yaz?
02:56Yeah.
02:57OK.
02:57OK, the twins.
02:58Which one looks the most responsible?
03:01Oh, Luke.
03:02It's got to be you.
03:03OK.
03:04And of course, you do need a challenge.
03:06So I think Rue, for you, take the challenge.
03:08Yep, please.
03:08OK.
03:09And Ben, for you, blue team, you take the challenge.
03:12All you now need is an expert, and we have some fabulous experts for you.
03:18So, off you go.
03:19Go and find them.
03:21I wonder what they think makes a good expert.
03:25So, we'd love some conversation, a chat expert would be great.
03:29Someone who's knowledgeable.
03:32Someone's up for a laugh.
03:34And someone who's going to be a bit of fun.
03:37Hello.
03:39For the Reds, it's Mark Stacey.
03:42Are you ready for some fun?
03:43Well, Luke and Ben, I will do my best.
03:45And for the Blues, it's Kate Bliss.
03:48At your service.
03:50Time to open those envelopes.
03:52An item with a connection to childhood.
03:56Something that comes as a matching pair.
03:59Oh, OK.
03:59Right, teams.
04:01Let's get quacking.
04:02Time starts now.
04:06The teams are off at slightly different paces.
04:10And the Blues have already found something that could meet my challenge.
04:15That's a pair.
04:16That looks like a pair to me.
04:17It does.
04:18Seahawashes?
04:19Yeah.
04:21Decorative.
04:21Gosh, they're heavy.
04:22Are they?
04:23Yeah, really heavy.
04:27Is there anything...
04:28What's that on the back?
04:28Is that for a kitty?
04:30For hanging them on the walls.
04:31Oh, OK, OK.
04:32Because you would put an urn or a vase on them.
04:36Yeah.
04:36So, they're meant to stand against the walls.
04:39Yeah, have a go with that.
04:41Oh, slight.
04:44All right, all right.
04:46I'm a big fan of it, but I don't know if we should go straight away and jump in.
04:50Yeah, they are a bit.
04:51They've got a bit of a look, haven't they?
04:53Well, the ticket price is £100 for the pair.
04:56That's a big spend.
04:57That is a big spend.
04:57That's a big spend.
04:59OK.
04:59We keep that in mind.
05:01Yeah.
05:02All right, come on then.
05:03I reckon they're sticking there.
05:04Yeah, let's go.
05:04Right, OK.
05:05So, the seahorses are going nowhere.
05:07Meanwhile, the Reds are looking at lamps.
05:09I just like the angle poise feature.
05:12I feel like it's quite nice.
05:13It looks quite like the Danish ones you see.
05:16Yes.
05:17I mean, the lighting is very popular, particularly those vintage angle poise lamps.
05:23I'm not sure how old that would be.
05:24It's not that old.
05:25No, I think that's a more modern version.
05:28Very stylish.
05:29Yeah.
05:30But when you're putting it into auction, I think they prefer the 20s, 30s and 50s ones.
05:36Cool.
05:37I'm happy to move on.
05:37But you're in the right area.
05:40Yeah.
05:40Got it.
05:41Cool.
05:42The lamp is a no.
05:44Back to the blues who've spotted a famous face.
05:47I'm looking at this photo of John F. Kennedy.
05:49Is that with his wife?
05:51No, is that him?
05:52That's him as a young man, isn't it?
05:54Oh, I'm a big fan of that.
05:56You like this?
05:56Yeah, I'm a big fan of this.
05:5949.
06:00Why do you like it, Ben?
06:01Just because it's JFK.
06:03I don't know.
06:03It's just like he's trapped in there.
06:05Yeah.
06:07I'm just trying to...
06:08I think it's just gilt metal.
06:10So I think it's like a little souvenir piece.
06:13I'm just having a little look.
06:15Yeah.
06:16So it's a printed...
06:19I think it's probably a sort of facsimile photograph of him.
06:22The same on...
06:24That's him later, isn't it?
06:26That's him as a young man.
06:27Yeah, yeah.
06:27And then that's him.
06:28He's a little bit older there, obviously.
06:31Do you really like this?
06:31Yeah.
06:32I think that's...
06:33I think this is the first purchase.
06:35What do you think about the collectability of this?
06:37I think there'll be a JFK fan in the auction.
06:40For £49?
06:42Well, I think we should ask for the best price.
06:44Mm-hmm.
06:44I think we should go for...
06:45What do you think, Luke?
06:47I love Ben's passion, and I think if he really wants it, then I'm all for it, 100%.
06:52It's gilt metal that's quite light.
06:54Yeah.
06:55So I think it's probably just a little souvenir thing.
06:58But if you really like it, I mean, why don't you find out the best price?
07:00Cool.
07:01While the boys track down the stall holder, the girls have seen something for my challenge,
07:06an item with a connection to childhood.
07:08I've got a Fisher-Price record player.
07:11Oh, wow.
07:12Which plays the little records.
07:14So...
07:14And you've got the records.
07:16Oh, isn't that precious?
07:16Oh, my gosh.
07:17So cute.
07:18Oh, I like this.
07:22Oh!
07:23Edelwein.
07:24Yeah.
07:24I used to have a little one like this.
07:26A Fisher-Price, music box, recording player.
07:28They're both sided, so you've got...
07:29Oh, wow.
07:30All the tracks.
07:31So you've got Compton Racecon, you know, put your money on the top town.
07:34And you've got part of the box.
07:36It is the original box, but it's got a little bit wet on my face, but it's the original
07:39box.
07:40Oh, no, is it?
07:40Oh, we didn't notice that, did we?
07:42What do you think?
07:43Tell us about it, Mark.
07:44Well, I mean, to be honest with you, it's mass-produced, it's plastic.
07:48Mm-hmm.
07:48But I think what you've got to look at is how many of these have survived.
07:53Yeah, and it still works.
07:54You know, it's 40 years, 50 years old.
07:56I think that's really fun.
07:58Yeah, I do too.
07:59It's different, isn't it?
08:00It's really different.
08:01Yeah.
08:02How much is it?
08:03I had 30, but I'd do it for...
08:04I would do it for 25, and you'll have a profit on that.
08:09100%.
08:10I think we like round numbers, don't we?
08:13Yeah, I think we could do 20.
08:14Sold.
08:16I just jumped into it there.
08:19You did jump into it.
08:20Shake my hand.
08:21Oh.
08:22You're welcome.
08:23Deal done.
08:23Thank you very much.
08:24And I wish you all the best, sweetheart.
08:26Well done, ladies.
08:28£20 for the Fisher-Price record player, and you're only 10 minutes into your shop.
08:33What's that?
08:34Keep up.
08:34Keep up.
08:35Keep up.
08:36Any news on that £49 pendant blues?
08:4036 is the best price.
08:4136?
08:42Yeah, so he said 38 initially.
08:43I said 35.
08:44He went to 36.
08:4636.
08:46It's good for that.
08:48Er...
08:49I don't know if it would go for any more.
08:51I just really like it.
08:53I love the passion, but we need that golden gavel, Ben.
08:56It's true.
08:57We need that golden gavel.
08:57I'm not thinking golden gavel mindset.
08:59No, Ben.
08:59You're jumping straight in.
09:00So what are you looking at here?
09:02Well, we're just looking at these little costume earrings.
09:05They're Sphinx, which is a costume jewellery company.
09:08They're marked on the back, obviously gilt metal and paste, but they're just...
09:13They're £13.
09:15Oh, okay.
09:16That sounds like it's about right.
09:17They're just quite fun.
09:19Yeah.
09:19And they're a pair.
09:20And they're a pair.
09:21I'm thinking challenge.
09:22That would hit the challenge, yeah.
09:25Yeah.
09:25Or you go something, obviously, in precious metal that's more expensive and better quality.
09:29I quite like a precious...
09:31I want something quite expensive.
09:31What, for the pair?
09:32Yeah.
09:33Well, yeah.
09:33Like an actual real nice pair of earrings.
09:35But what if we got...
09:35What if we just got like a nicer precious thing just on its wands and then did this as
09:39a pair?
09:40Do you think we'll make profit on that?
09:42For £13?
09:44I think...
09:44Well, it depends whether they'll do a deal.
09:46I mean, if they were...
09:47If you get it for a tenner.
09:48Get it for a tenner.
09:49Yeah.
09:49Or even less.
09:51Yeah.
09:51I think they're quite fun.
09:52I lost the best price on this.
09:55Lots of indecision from the blues.
09:56Let's see if Luke can work his magic.
09:59Meanwhile, Rue has spotted some miniature chairs.
10:02Mark, can you tell us about these?
10:04Oh, yeah.
10:05They're little miniatures.
10:06I mean, some people say they're for dolls' houses.
10:09But I think they're just little miniature pieces.
10:11They're the sort of thing, you know, for a collector's cabinet.
10:14So if you had a little decorative cabinet with glass or welder, you put little bits of silver
10:20and other things.
10:21Bejouterie, it's called.
10:23Bejouterie?
10:23A mixed lot of stuff.
10:25Is that another word for toot?
10:26No, it's not.
10:28It's a posh word.
10:30But it's not.
10:31No, no.
10:31I mean, they're very interesting.
10:32Do you know how much they are?
10:35£120.
10:36Each?
10:36Each?
10:37Yeah.
10:37Oh, wow.
10:39Interesting.
10:40Well, they are silver, but I don't think we can help with that.
10:44All right, let's keep them.
10:44But they are lovely.
10:46So it's a firm no to the silver chairs.
10:49How are the boys getting on with those earrings?
10:51Right, so she said nine is the lowest, and then she said ten, and got it down to nine.
10:57Oh, well done.
10:59I think we get them.
10:59I think we get them for £9?
11:01For £9.
11:01Bag them?
11:02Bag them.
11:02Okay, first purchase and the challenge.
11:04Sick.
11:05Fantastic.
11:05Let's do it.
11:06At last, the Blues have bagged their first buy, and my challenge with a pair of costume
11:12jewellery earrings for £9.
11:14But with half an hour gone, both teams need to pick up the pace.
11:18While they carry on shopping, it's a good time to look at that mystery item I showed you
11:23earlier.
11:27It's Victorian, made of silver, it has an ornate handle and has a little indent on the end.
11:33Any ideas?
11:35Let's ask around at the fair.
11:37It looks like some sort of cutlery instrument or something like that.
11:50Oh dear, I think they may need some help.
11:54I'll give you a clue.
11:55Think personal grooming.
11:57A face cream?
11:58Like a vintage.
12:02Cuticles?
12:03Cuticles?
12:03At last!
12:04Nail cuticles?
12:07Cuticles.
12:08Push your cuticles back a bit.
12:09Yes!
12:09Yes!
12:10Amazing!
12:11Yes, it is a cuticle pusher.
12:14Late 19th century, late Victorian, silver handled terribly glamorous and designed to keep
12:21your nails neat and tidy.
12:25Yeah, great.
12:26Forget the ears.
12:28Used by both men and women, cuticle pushers were often part of elaborate manicure or vanity
12:34sets alongside instruments such as nail scissors, files, buffers, nail brushes and pots for cuticle
12:41cream.
12:42For the Victorians, cleanliness was next to godliness and keeping their nails spick and span was vitally
12:51important.
12:52So, how would they have used this?
12:54You take a lovely bowl of warm water to soften the skin around the fingernails.
13:00Take them out, pat them dry, place your hand on a cloth and you take the cuticle pusher.
13:09Using a forward and backward motion, you would lightly push the dead skin to the back of the
13:17fingernail, remove the dead skin, leaving you with a perfectly manicured fingernail.
13:24Well manicured hands signified wealth and status in contrast to dirty or unkept nails, which
13:31were a sign of lower social class and manual work.
13:35Now, what about the colouring of fingernails?
13:38Well, nail varnish wasn't introduced until the 1930s because during the Victorian period,
13:44Queen Victoria really frowned upon colours on nails and make-up.
13:49Women were expected to be much more natural.
13:52So, to enhance their features, ladies would use things like lemon juice and beeswax just
13:58to heighten and shine their fingernails, did the trick beautifully.
14:04The upper classes would also wear gloves to protect their hands and would use tools like
14:08button hooks to save their fragile fingernails.
14:12More than a century later, complete Victorian grooming sets in pristine condition can still
14:18be worth hundreds of pounds.
14:20And as for value today, you might be surprised to hear that £30 would buy something like this.
14:28Now, that to me is quite amazing when you think that you're looking at an object that is
14:33silver, hallmarked, beautifully put together.
14:38You can use it today as well as you could 120 years ago.
14:43And you're holding in your hands whilst you're beautifying your nails a wonderful piece of social history.
14:55With our nails sorted, let's get back to the shopping.
14:58With half an hour to go, both teams need to nail two more buys.
15:02And the Reds are eyeing up vases for their big spend.
15:06What are you attracted to in these?
15:08I like the bright coloured ones.
15:10Yes.
15:10And the bigger ones.
15:11But I would love to know what I'm meant to look for.
15:14Well, I'm almost certain they're West German.
15:18Mm-hm.
15:18So from the 60s and 70s, massive market.
15:22They produce so many different patterns, as you can see.
15:25But it is those really bright, vivid and odd shapes that make a lot of money.
15:30We were just interested in knowing how much the orange and green vase was.
15:35The orange and green, that's made by Bay Pottery, B-A-Y.
15:40West German.
15:41West German.
15:42It's a Bodo Man's.
15:44At the moment, it's around 240.
15:46Woo!
15:48Gosh, it is very vivid, isn't it?
15:50He's lovely.
15:51Got him?
15:51Yeah.
15:55Do that for me.
15:56Is it heavy, really?
15:57Does it feel like profit?
16:00So, you know what they say?
16:02Oh, hello.
16:02What's better than one?
16:05A pear.
16:06Two.
16:06Here you go.
16:08Whoa!
16:09Oh!
16:11The name is here.
16:12This is the sort of shape and pattern number.
16:15West Germany.
16:15Yeah.
16:16So, it's 60s, 70s.
16:18So, would there have been quite a few of these?
16:21They would have made a lot at the time.
16:22Yeah.
16:22It was a very big market.
16:24Hmm.
16:24They are lovely, but they might just be a bit dear.
16:27Yeah.
16:27Well, I think they are.
16:28And putting them into auction is a bit of a challenge.
16:32Yeah.
16:32But the colours are gorgeous.
16:34I mean, I can see why you're attracted to them.
16:36Yeah.
16:36And it depends, really, what the dealer offers them.
16:38Do you want to ask him what his best price is?
16:41What would your best price be for it?
16:43150.
16:44Okay.
16:45150.
16:45150.
16:45150 pounds.
16:46Good to think about.
16:48Yeah.
16:49Have a think about it.
16:50I'll put that one back very carefully there.
16:53So, the buzzers go on the back burner.
16:55And the blues are also looking to spend big.
16:58These are quite fun, guys.
17:00In the 1920s.
17:02Wow.
17:021920s.
17:03Brilliant.
17:05So, yeah, these are really fun.
17:07So, they're obviously got cockerels, finials, but all that is enameled to bring out these
17:15lovely colours.
17:17Right.
17:17But, can you see that little mark down there?
17:20Yeah.
17:20So, that is the silver hallmark.
17:23So, they date from 1928.
17:26Mm.
17:26And these would be with your cherry or your olive.
17:32Wow.
17:32In your martini.
17:34Ah, okay.
17:34That's very posh.
17:35Which is very posh, but really lovely set.
17:38Yeah, that's really nice.
17:39I like the colours.
17:40Yeah.
17:40The colours are quite cool.
17:42Yeah.
17:43So, the key with these is that the enamel is in good condition.
17:46Condition is everything.
17:47Yeah.
17:47Looks like they're in their original little box.
17:50Yeah.
17:50Little bit of damage to the box, but the set looks really nice.
17:57Yeah.
17:57And that's the important thing.
17:59Yeah.
17:59Would they be used or just collected?
18:01A bit of both.
18:02You could use them if you wanted to.
18:04Yeah.
18:04I like them.
18:05What do you think?
18:05Yeah.
18:06I mean, it'd be our big spend.
18:07It would be a big spend.
18:08I mean, I wouldn't want to pay that for them at auction.
18:11So, we've got 115 on there.
18:12Yeah.
18:13But I think if we could get them under the hundred.
18:16Yeah, yeah, yeah.
18:17I mean, I've seen these at auction go for a really nice enameled one.
18:2370, 80, 90, a hundred pounds.
18:25It's difficult to be precise.
18:28Yeah, yeah, yeah.
18:28But, yeah.
18:29Okay.
18:29I like them.
18:30Should we answer the best price?
18:31Yeah.
18:32The best I could do on that, I can bring it down to 85.
18:3585?
18:3685.
18:36I bought quite well on them.
18:38Yeah.
18:38That's quite nice.
18:39You could do 80.
18:41An offer?
18:4280 is the offer.
18:43Amazing.
18:45Amazing.
18:46Sweet.
18:46Well done, Luke.
18:4880 pounds for the cockerel cocktail sticks.
18:51Okay.
18:51Expense done.
18:52Challenge done.
18:53Yeah.
18:53You can buy whatever you like.
18:55How are the Reds getting on?
18:57So, this is a brooch.
18:59That's how much an expert I am, you see.
19:03Anyone could have told us that.
19:05And it's guillage enamel.
19:07So, this, I mean, it's a gorgeous colour.
19:09Yeah, I really like the colour.
19:10I agree.
19:11It's quite striking.
19:12And so, this would have been sort of decorated underneath on the silver.
19:16Mm-hmm.
19:17And then this enamel is poured over, so you get all that texture underneath it.
19:21And it's just incredibly stylish.
19:23So, this is Danish.
19:25Mm-hmm.
19:27Kiosk.
19:27What's the damage on it?
19:29Well, I'm holding back on that.
19:33It's marked at 95.
19:35What would your best price be on that?
19:38I could do it for 68.
19:41Wow.
19:42What's our big spend got to be?
19:4475.
19:44Oh, but anything lower than that.
19:45I could do it for 75.
19:46Yeah.
19:47That's not how it works.
19:49Honestly.
19:52I'm not going to shop it with you, are you?
19:56Pushing the price out.
19:57Don't let...
19:57She'll get it down.
19:58I'll leave you guys to it, shall I?
20:00Um, I think that's Charlotte.
20:03And how much did you say?
20:0468 pounds is the absolute best.
20:07Do you do it for 60?
20:08No, that's...
20:09That's my best.
20:10OK.
20:10Yeah.
20:1164?
20:1364.
20:14What do you think?
20:14Are you happy with that, Ruth?
20:15Yeah, I am.
20:15I think it's a bit of quality, actually.
20:17Yeah, yeah.
20:18Do you like it?
20:18I do, I like the colour.
20:20Do you like it?
20:20I do like it.
20:21I like it.
20:22OK, well, that's all the...
20:23That's all three of us, then.
20:23Yeah, that's all three of us.
20:24Shall we go for it?
20:25Yeah, go for it.
20:26We'll shake the ladies' hands, though.
20:27Thank you so much.
20:29Well done, ladies.
20:3164 pounds for the enamelled brooch.
20:33That's your second buy, and you have 15 minutes left.
20:37Whatever it is, we have to find something that's 75 pounds or more.
20:41Yeah.
20:42Because...
20:42And that we love.
20:43So, while the Reds focus on their big spend, the Blues are also looking at a brooch.
20:49So, it's sterling.
20:50Yeah.
20:51What do you think, Ben?
20:52Oh, yeah, I think it's quite nicely cast.
20:55What is that?
20:55To be honest, because it's 14 pounds, I'd quite like to spend a little bit of money,
20:59splash the cash a little bit.
21:00So, you want to go out with a bang?
21:03I would quite like to, but...
21:05What are you thinking, Ben?
21:07If we're considerate of time, and also if we save a lot of money, we can probably most
21:11likely beat the Reds team.
21:12Yeah, see, I'm quite efficiently minded, and if splashing the cash is something that's
21:17going to make us lose, then I think this might be a good shot.
21:20Yeah.
21:20Okay.
21:21Did I hear a mutter of a Golden Gavel?
21:23Oh, I would love a Golden Gavel.
21:25Is that the target?
21:25Golden Gavel.
21:26I would love a Golden Gavel.
21:27Exactly.
21:27So, we're thinking profit, profit, profit.
21:29Just profit.
21:30Only profit.
21:31Well, why don't I find out what the best price is on there?
21:34Do you like that, Ben?
21:35I mean, not if you don't like it.
21:37No, I do.
21:37I do.
21:38I do think it's very cool.
21:40Yeah.
21:40I do think it's very cool.
21:41Yeah?
21:41Okay.
21:42Yeah.
21:42I'll find that best price, and then we know where we are.
21:45Okay.
21:45Okay.
21:45See you in a tick.
21:47Let's see if Kate can trot off with a bargain.
21:50How are the Reds getting on with their big spend?
21:53We've got five minutes.
21:54I'm desperate to avoid buying a big German vase.
21:57So, have you got anything of quality for £75 or thereabouts?
22:01You can do a bit of Austro-Hungarian.
22:03Gosh, that's pretty.
22:04Or I can do a pendant.
22:04Oh, that's pretty.
22:05Yeah, I like the pendant.
22:06You like the float?
22:07Can we have a look at that?
22:08Yeah.
22:09Are these a semi-precious, though?
22:11Right, these, no.
22:11On here, you've got a blister pearl.
22:14Yes.
22:14The rest is paste apart from that little drop at the bottom.
22:16That will either be an anaphyst or go on it.
22:18That's nice.
22:18You can see from here.
22:19But the blue will be paste.
22:21But age on this, you're looking at around the 1850s.
22:24Wow.
22:25Austro-Hungarian.
22:26So, it's old.
22:27But the quality of this, when you look, when they do enamel on the back,
22:31as well as the front.
22:32Oh, gosh.
22:33You know the quality is there.
22:34Oh, my gosh.
22:35Okay.
22:37And what sort of price are we looking at for this?
22:39Well, I've got 160, but I'll do 130 on it.
22:42What do you think, Mark?
22:44Well, I think...
22:44But it's Austro-Hungarian.
22:45I think it's much nicer than the...
22:47I think it's a better bet than ours.
22:49Well, I think so.
22:50While the reds weigh up the necklace and the vase, Kate has some news on the horse brooch.
22:55What does twin telepathy say the best price is?
22:58Pfft.
23:00Seven quid.
23:01No, no, no.
23:02To mystic?
23:03No.
23:03Eleven?
23:05Well, in the middle.
23:06Ten pounds.
23:07It's not bad, eh?
23:08That's how we are.
23:09Ten pounds?
23:09That could definitely get us a golden gavel, I think, over a tenner.
23:13Well, I just think it's really nice.
23:15You've got to look at the quality of it.
23:16Yeah.
23:16I just think it's quite nicely cast.
23:18For ten pounds, there's a lot of horsey people out there.
23:21Yeah.
23:21You've got the foal as well.
23:23Normally, you know, things get bent, but this is quite nicely...
23:29Yeah.
23:29Yeah.
23:30...shaped, and I just think for ten pounds...
23:33Yeah.
23:33You know what, fair enough.
23:33...there might be a chance.
23:35Happy?
23:35Very happy.
23:36Final answer?
23:37Yes.
23:37Yes.
23:38Golden Gavel happy.
23:38OK.
23:39Well done, Blues.
23:41That's your shopping complete.
23:42Ten pounds for the silver horse brooch.
23:45Cup of tea, boys?
23:46Yes.
23:46Let's go.
23:47Let's go, Kate.
23:49The Blues can relax, but with time running out, the Reds need to make up their minds.
23:54I'm not a jewellery expert, but I would have thought at auction, with that quality, they
24:00would hopefully estimate at around 100 to 150.
24:04OK.
24:05So, is there...
24:05And, you know, you just never know, but it is a bit of a gamble.
24:09One minute left, team.
24:10I'm putting the clock up.
24:12I think it's a better gamble than the Vars.
24:14But if you really like the Vars, we can quick, you know, we can see if we can get there
24:18in time.
24:19Do you reckon we could do any lower than 130?
24:23I'll take another tenner off and make it 120.
24:26What do you think?
24:27You make the call.
24:28Oh, no, you can't leave that on me.
24:31OK, let's do it.
24:32Like you said, it was a risk.
24:33Why not?
24:34Are you sure?
24:35Yeah.
24:35Well, what else have you seen?
24:37Both of you.
24:37We haven't got much time left.
24:38I've seen lots of lovely things here, but unfortunately, the minutes are ticking away.
24:42Oh, let's do it.
24:43OK, we'll do it.
24:43We'll shake on it.
24:44Let's do it.
24:45I love this.
24:46I love this.
24:47Thank you so much.
24:48Finally, Reds, that's your big spend complete.
24:52£120 for the blister pearl necklace.
24:55Time flies when you're having fun, but the shopping is done.
25:00Two pieces of jewellery and a plastic rammer.
25:04The sublime and the ridiculous.
25:06Yeah.
25:07Let's remind ourselves what the red team have bought.
25:10They kick things off with their challenge, an item with a connection to childhood, paying
25:15£20 for a children's record player.
25:19Next, they bought an enamelled Danish brooch for £64.
25:25And they finished with their big spend, a blister pearl necklace for £120.
25:32Well, talk about bubbly and to the wire within seconds.
25:37My goodness me.
25:38Well done.
25:39Rue, which was your favourite item?
25:41I think the brooch.
25:43OK.
25:43And for you, Yaz?
25:44I think the same thing.
25:46Yeah.
25:46We definitely had the most time to look at it and reflect on it.
25:49OK.
25:49And yeah, I think it's definitely the best purchase.
25:51And Rue, which one is going to make you all the money in auction?
25:53I think the brooch as well.
25:55Yeah.
25:55Oh, you do?
25:56Yeah, yeah, I do.
25:57We both agree on that one.
25:58You agree on that one as well, yes?
25:59Oh my goodness.
26:00All our money's on the brooch at the moment.
26:02So how much money did you spend?
26:05£204.
26:05Right, £96 for Mark, Stacey.
26:09Give him the money.
26:10Wow, Mark, any big ideas?
26:12Oh, lots of big ideas, but only £96.
26:15I've got something in mind, something that's got centuries of quality about it.
26:19Oh, you can rely on this man, girls.
26:21Don't worry about a thing.
26:23Yeah, we have.
26:24I've heard.
26:26Well, whilst Mark goes off to buy his bonus bite,
26:29let's remind ourselves what the blue team bought.
26:33Challenged to find something that comes in a pair,
26:35they picked up these costume jewellery earrings for just £9.
26:40Their second buy was their big spend.
26:44£80 for the cockerel cocktail sticks.
26:47And they completed their shop spending £10 on the silver horse brooch.
26:53Well, you two, do you normally take as long to get started with anything?
26:58Yes.
26:59Yes, we usually do.
27:01Yeah.
27:01Why is that?
27:02Were you just so confused with everything or were you just wanting to think about it?
27:05We were playing a bit more tactically.
27:06We wanted to take our time until we were sure on the items that we wanted to get.
27:09Yeah, we didn't want to rock into it.
27:10Ben, which item would you love to take home?
27:12What was your favourite?
27:13My favourite was the horse brooch because it reminded me of me and my little twin brother.
27:17Oh, that's very sweet.
27:19What about you, Luke?
27:20My favourite was the silver cocktail sticks.
27:22Oh, very glamorous, terribly stylish I think.
27:26But back to you and Ben, which item will make the most at auction?
27:30I think the earrings, the initial earrings will make the most profit due to how cheap they were.
27:34Okay.
27:35What about you, Luke?
27:36I think the cocktail sticks still.
27:38Okay.
27:39Yeah.
27:39You're all in on the cocktail sticks.
27:41Yeah.
27:41So how much did you spend in total?
27:43£99.
27:44£99?
27:45Gosh, £201 for Kate Bliss.
27:47Give her the money.
27:48It was tactical.
27:49Any hopes and dreams?
27:51Luke actually talked about a precious piece of jewellery, which we didn't get.
27:54Yeah.
27:55So maybe I might go down that route.
27:57Well, Kate Bliss is pretty good with her jewellery, so I think you're in safe hands there.
28:01Amazing.
28:02Well, while Kate goes in search of her bonus buy, it's time for me to head to the auction.
28:09I've come to Windsor to meet auctioneer Harry Ballin.
28:12£40 I have and I'm looking for £42.
28:15£45, sir.
28:16£48.
28:17Right.
28:18Right, Harry.
28:19What a collection of items.
28:21It's eclectic, isn't it?
28:23Let's start with the Reds.
28:24And their first purchase was this vintage record player.
28:28They've nailed it.
28:29Children of a certain age, this is your childhood in a box.
28:34Box not in the best of condition, but it's just fantastic.
28:37Brilliant.
28:38Estimate.
28:38A paltry 20 to 40.
28:41Worth so much more, in my opinion.
28:43Well, they'll be very pleased because they only paid £20.
28:46Here's hoping it's going to do well.
28:48OK.
28:48Second item.
28:49Very lovely.
28:51A silver Danish brooch.
28:53Isn't she gorgeous?
28:54It's got a really nice, rich green.
28:58Volmabana, isn't it, I think?
29:00It's on trend.
29:01People like this sort of stuff.
29:03It's collectible.
29:04And Estward?
29:05£80 to £100.
29:07£64 paid.
29:08Wow, they did well there, didn't they?
29:10I think they did do well there.
29:11OK, let's see how well they're doing on the final item.
29:14They're a rather good-looking pendant.
29:16It's a beautiful pendant.
29:18It's got that central blister pearl.
29:21When it's growing, it's attached itself to the shell of the mollusk.
29:25And so it's got a flat side.
29:27Great for jewellery.
29:28What is your estimate?
29:29£60 to £80.
29:30Ouch!
29:31OK, well, this was their big spend.
29:33They paid £120.
29:36Yeah, it's going to be a tough day on the rostrum to get that over the line.
29:39OK.
29:39But let's give it a go.
29:40Let's move on to the blue team.
29:42And they kicked off their shopping.
29:44They bought a pair of earrings.
29:46What are your thoughts on them?
29:47People are going to like them.
29:48They're not my sort of thing.
29:50Costume jewellery, it's £10 to £20.
29:53That's not bad.
29:54They only paid £9.
29:56Well, they're going to do well then, aren't they?
29:58Very good.
29:58OK, second item.
29:59A cased set of very posh.
30:02I really like these.
30:04The cocktail sticks.
30:06Over to you.
30:06We're on the same page.
30:08Good man.
30:08Absolutely beautiful.
30:09Yeah.
30:10So they're silver.
30:10They've got the enamel cockerels on the top.
30:13Absolutely gorgeous.
30:14What's your estimate?
30:15£60 to £80.
30:16This was their big spend.
30:18And they paid £80.
30:20I think they'll do better.
30:21I think they're going to do better than that.
30:23OK, third item.
30:24And this is the sterling silver horsey.
30:26Horses are always popular.
30:28Everybody loves a horse.
30:29And in our location here in Windsor,
30:31we've got the two racecourses at Ascot and at Windsor,
30:33and Kempton just around the corner.
30:35We sell a lot of horse-related items.
30:37So I'm sure this will do well.
30:39OK, estimate, Harry?
30:40£10 to £20.
30:41Oh, £10 paid.
30:42It's going to fly.
30:43It's looking good.
30:44Are you going to be on the rostrum?
30:45I'll be on the rostrum,
30:46and I'll be joined by my colleague, Simon.
30:48Great double act.
30:49Looking for £110.
30:50£110 now.
30:51£120.
30:52Hammers up.
30:53Ru and Yaz, hello.
30:55Are you feeling happy and joyful?
30:57Yeah.
30:58Excited.
30:58Nervous.
30:59Are you?
31:00Yeah.
31:00Good.
31:01Now, Ru, have you been to an auction before?
31:02No, never.
31:03Never?
31:04Mm-mm.
31:04Yes, truly.
31:05No.
31:06So the first item is the challenge,
31:09and you bought the fabulous record player,
31:12children's record player.
31:13Yes.
31:13Here it comes.
31:14I'm looking for £30.
31:17£30.

31:21£20.
31:23He's got £20.
31:24£20, any interested?
31:26£20 I have, and I'm looking for £22.
31:28He's got £20.

31:32It's a fabulous thing at £20.
31:35I'm selling for £20.
31:40I'm selling for £20.
31:41Oh!
31:43OK.
31:43Well, £20, you've got your money back.
31:45It's OK.
31:46No profit yet.
31:47Next item is the Stainish Silver and Enamel Broncos.
31:51This is good.
31:53Gorgeous colour.
31:54Are you ready?
31:55Yeah.
31:55Here it comes.
31:56And I'd like to see a starting bid of £80 for this.

32:41This is your big spend.
32:42Here it is.
32:43The Hungarian enamel piece.
32:46Isn't that gorgeous?
32:46Yeah.
32:47And you spent big £120.
32:49You weren't messing around.
32:50Are you ready for it?
32:51Yep.
32:51Here it comes.
32:53£60 for this.
32:55£60 for a beautiful piece of jewellery.
32:58£60.
33:01£50 then.
33:02Come on!
33:04We need more.
33:05£50.
33:07£50.
33:08£50.
33:09£50 I have.
33:11£50 I have and I'm looking for £55.
33:14But I'm selling at £50.
33:18No!
33:20£50, that's minus £70.
33:22You did have plus £66.
33:24So you are now minus £4.
33:28Aw!
33:29It's not over yet.
33:31Because Mark Stacey is going to ride in on his steed and save the day.
33:36Hopefully.
33:36OK.
33:37Are you ready for the bonus buy?
33:38We are.
33:38Right, close your eyes tight.
33:40OK.
33:41Mark will go and find it.
33:42Thank you, Mark.
33:43OK, ladies.
33:44And open your eyes.
33:46Oh!
33:48What is this?
33:49What is this?
33:51I was hoping for a better response.
33:55It's actually a Wedgwood clar.
33:57Wedgwood is one of the oldest ceramic makers in the country.
34:01This is green jasperware.
34:02And if you look at the cherubs, they're playing blind man's bluff.
34:07And how much did you pay for that?
34:10£70.
34:11Ooh!
34:11I know.
34:13More importantly, how much do you think it's worth?
34:16£20.
34:18I don't know.
34:19It's really difficult.
34:20I think it's because I love Wedgwood.
34:22OK.
34:23So it influences my opinion.
34:25It's not about what you love, Mark.
34:26I know, I know.
34:28I would like it to make a profit, but I just don't know.
34:31We would like it to make a profit.
34:32It's true, I think.
34:34OK.
34:34So what are your thoughts?
34:35You're minus four.
34:37I mean, we've got nothing else to lose now.
34:38We've got nothing else to lose now.
34:39Let's do it.
34:40You're going to go with the bonus buy.
34:41Throw it in.
34:42Are you sure?
34:43Yeah.
34:43Mark, they're going to go with the bonus buy.
34:46That's a good choice.
34:47Is it a good choice?
34:48Well, let's find out.
34:49Here is what the auctioneer thinks of Mark's bonus buy.
34:54I really like this one.
34:55Wedgwood, Jasperware in the green.
34:58Blind Man's Bluff.
35:00Ah, OK.
35:01Not your traditional blue.
35:03That's why I think we went strong on the price.
35:0580 to 120 pounds.
35:07Oh, Mark's face is going to be delighted.
35:09He only paid 70.
35:10Oh, that's good news.
35:11Yeah.
35:13The auctioneer thinks it's rather good.
35:15His estimate is 80 pounds to 120 pounds.
35:18OK, are you ready?
35:19Yeah.
35:20You're putting all your hope in it.
35:21Here it comes.
35:22Start the bidding at 100 pounds.
35:25100 pounds I'm looking for.
35:27100 pounds.
35:28Come on.

35:36I'll look at 70 if it helps.

35:51It's done!
35:53White bits base, Mark.

35:55At least it doesn't change anything.
35:57It's OK.
35:58You're still minus four!
36:01Yes!
36:08Luke and Ben, how are you feeling?
36:10I'm excited.
36:11Very nervous.
36:11Oh, good!
36:12That's a great combination, Kate, I think.
36:15What is the dream result for you today, chaps?
36:17Golden Gavel.
36:18It's got to be the Golden Gavel.
36:18It's always the Golden Gavel.
36:19100%.
36:20That was the plan all along, Kate.
36:21They're a bit obsessed with the Golden Gavel.
36:23I know.
36:24I'm worried.
36:25So the first item you bought is the challenge piece.
36:28And you bought the earrings.
36:29Yeah.
36:29You only paid £9.
36:31Are you ready?
36:31Yeah.
36:32Very ready.
36:32Here it comes.
36:33£20.
36:35Where do I hear £20?

37:43Well done!
37:43Well done!
37:45Well done!
37:45That's plus £30, you're now £41 up.

38:42Oh, my God!
38:43Money!
38:44Two takeaways!
38:45And Golden Gavel.
38:47But it's not over yet.
38:49It could get even better.
38:51We've got the bonus buy coming up, chaps.
38:54So, close your eyes.
38:56Kate will go and get her bonus buy.
39:00OK, boys.
39:01Open your eyes.
39:02Oh, hello.
39:03You might need your magnifying glass.
39:05OK.
39:05So, what we have is known as trench art.
39:09You may have heard of trench art.
39:10It's the name given for little items that were made by soldiers,
39:14usually in the World Wars, World War I and World War II,
39:17and they made little items out of the debris that was lying around.
39:21So, wood, shell casings, scrap metal.
39:25Yeah.
39:25And very often they would model little items,
39:27either for loved ones, or sometimes they made things for trading,
39:31for cigarettes or food.
39:34And this is one such item.
39:36Tiny little modelled plane out of scrap metal.
39:40I think it looks a little bit like a Spitfire.
39:43Yeah.
39:43It's got a little pin on the back so you can wear it on your lapel.
39:48How much did you pay for it?
39:50I paid...
39:51You left me a lot of money, didn't you?
39:54Yeah, yeah, yeah.
39:54200 quid?
39:5610 pounds.
39:57Oh, that's so fun.
39:58That keeps it consistent, though.
39:59How much do you think it will go for?
40:01Well, these vary.
40:03They're not common.
40:04You know, they are quite unusual,
40:06and I think this is a particularly sweet one.
40:08I've seen them go for 20 pounds.
40:10I've seen them go for 40 pounds, so...
40:12You've got your golden gavels.
40:14Nobody can take them off you.
40:15I agree.
40:16So, you can go with the bonus buy,
40:18and if Kate makes a profit, she also gets a golden gavel.
40:23How are you feeling?
40:24I think she deserves that chance.
40:25She really does.
40:25I agree with the golden gavel.
40:27Yeah?
40:27Are you going to go with it?
40:29Let's go.
40:30They're going with the bonus buy.
40:31Let's see what the alternator thinks of the potential Spitfire.
40:35I'm a massive fan of a sweetheart, broach.
40:38I just think the sentiment behind it is so, so lovely.
40:41It's not necessarily reflected in the price.
40:4420 to 30 pounds for this little sweet one.
40:46You're an old romantic, aren't you?
40:48I am a bit.
40:4910 pounds paid.
40:51Oh, it's going to fly.
40:52It's going to do well.
40:52It's going to do really well.
40:55The auctioneer loves it we all do.
40:57His estimate is 20 to 30 pounds.
40:59Perfect.
41:00OK, here we go.
41:0130 pounds I'm looking for.
41:0230 pounds I'm looking for.
41:0520 then, 20 pounds I have in the room.
41:07Yes!
41:08You're the golden gavels!
41:09Yes!
41:09That's so good!
41:10We're golden gavels all round.
41:1220 pounds I have and I'm looking for 22.
41:1520 pounds I have and I'm looking for 22.
41:17But I'm selling to the room at 20 pounds.
41:22Yay!
41:24Right!
41:25That is 20 pounds plus 10.
41:27We're going to add it to your 51.
41:29You have 61 pounds.
41:3161 quid!
41:32A golden gavel each.
41:33And Kate, you've also got yourself a golden gavel.
41:36Well done, Kate.
41:37Well done, team.
41:43Well, on today's bargain, it's been the battle of the childhood friends versus the twins.
41:49However, there has to be a winner.
41:51And the winning team, I've got to say, is...
41:55It's the Blues!
41:56Yeah!
41:57It's the Blues!
41:58Come on.
42:02But, Reds, I think you did fabulously well.
42:06Not so well on the first item.
42:10Unbelievably well on the second.
42:12And then, it kind of went a bit disastrously wrong on the third item.
42:17But, well done, you two.
42:18You go home with minus four.
42:22So bad!
42:23But have you had fun?
42:24Yeah!
42:25Yeah, lots of fun.
42:26It's been brilliant.
42:27But, Blues, wow, you smashed it, didn't you?
42:30You made a profit on the first item.
42:33You made a profit on the second item.
42:36And guess what?
42:38They made a profit on the third item.
42:40They get golden gavel!
42:43Well, that's just showing off.
42:46You went with the bonus buy.
42:48Kate comes in, doubles her money, adds another £10 to the kitty,
42:53so you've got £61.
42:55Golden gavel!
42:57Golden gavel!
42:57And Kate Bliss has got a golden gavel!
42:59Give them a round of applause!
43:00Oh, yes!
43:01Oh, Kate!
43:02Yay!
43:03Good team!
43:03A bit more enthusiastic.
43:06But, very well done.
