Iran and Oman hold first Hormuz talks as US-Iran deal stays on edge

Iran's deputy foreign minister said the first Joint Hormuz Committee meeting took place in Muscat, after multiple US media outlets reported that fresh talks between the two sides were planned for Tuesday, a claim Tehran has since shot down.

00:15The apparent breakthrough follows another extremely tense weekend here in the Middle
00:20East. The flare-up began on Thursday, when a cargo ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz
00:25was struck by an Iranian drone. In the days that followed, the United States carried out
00:30multiple rounds of strikes against Iranian military infrastructure, while Iran launched
00:35drone and missile attacks targeting both Bahrain and Kuwait. The focus now returns to the future
00:41of the Strait of Hormuz, with Iran insisting it should control navigation through the waterway,
00:46while the United States and its allies continue to push for free and safe passage through one
00:52of the world's most strategically important shipping lanes.
