00:00It's a new Cornish week and we are here to celebrate the Cornish language and all these children are here
00:06today, up to 180 children, there are about 30 schools that are participating in Go Cornish which is the Cornish
00:13language learning programme.
00:14So I always like about learning Cornish because every time we hand out sheets this one always counts in Cornish.
00:25I think Cornish is really good because instead of talking the same language all the time you get two different
00:33languages to talk in because it's quite boring to talk in the same language all the time.
00:37My favourite Cornish word is ticky do and it's really good to say it's a butterfly, it's ticky do.
00:47My favourite Cornish word is cat, it's cat.
00:51I often say to people it's not about teaching them Cornish, it's about letting them engage and love the language
00:58and have fun with it.
01:00And I think here today we're seeing that creativity and that enjoyment spilling out all over the place.
01:05We already have nine schools who have attained the bronze award level and today we've got four new ones and
01:12they're going to come into the main council chamber and each be awarded with their prestigious Go Cornish bronze award.
01:19This is just one example of the activities that the children themselves have devised.
01:24So here we have Sarah.
01:26Pat La Guinness.
01:27Pat La Guinness.
01:28Which means, how are you?
01:30Printing.
01:31Britain.
01:32That means brilliant in Cornish.
01:35Cornish language is so important.
01:37It's part of our national minority status.
01:39This year we've seen it upgraded to part three status which now puts us on par with the other Celtic
01:44languages across the United Kingdom.
01:46It's part of our history, it's part of our culture.
01:48It makes us who we are, the fabric of our society and what Cornwall is.
01:52And that's really important that we take that not only as a recognition of our past but we take it
01:56into the future as well.
01:58The book's about all the words that I've learnt in school.
02:06My favourite Cornish word is more which means see.
02:33You can go online and look up Speak Cornish and you'll find lots and lots of information there about all
02:39the ways you can get involved, you can learn Cornish.
02:41We have all these various services you can access but also there are language apps so you too can learn
02:47Cornish.
