The trip to Mars takes seven to nine months. Each way. That's up to eighteen months of total transit time sealed inside a capsule roughly the size of a studio apartment with five other people. No fresh air. No natural light. No weather. No new faces. No escape. After three weeks, Earth shrinks to a dot. After three months, it disappears entirely. For the first time in human history, astronauts would look out a window and see nothing they recognize — no blue planet, no Moon, just blackness. Psychologists call this the "Earth-out-of-view" phenomenon and nobody knows what it does to the human mind because no one has ever experienced it.

The Mars500 experiment — a 520-day isolation simulation run by the Russian Academy of Sciences from 2010 to 2011 — gave us the closest preview. Six men were sealed in a 550-cubic-meter chamber in Moscow. By mid-mission, one crewmember developed chronic insomnia and spent most of his time in bed. Another showed signs of depression. The two most stressed individuals were responsible for 85% of all interpersonal conflicts. Sleep cycles drifted. Cognitive performance declined. Motivation collapsed. And that was a simulation — they could have walked out any time. On a real Mars mission, there is no exit. Communication delays reach up to 24 minutes each way — meaning a distress call to Houston takes 48 minutes for a response. No real-time conversation. No video calls with family. No crisis intervention. You're on your own with the same five people, the same walls, the same recycled air, and a growing certainty that if something goes wrong — medically, mechanically, or psychologically no one is coming.

NASA classifies behavioral health as one of the highest-risk factors for Mars mission failure. Not radiation. Not fuel. Not landing. The human mind.
