Sam Bateman, the leader of a polygamous Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints sect, is back in court in Arizona facing state child abuse charges — and he is legally representing himself. Bateman has already been sentenced to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty in federal court in 2024 to conspiracy to commit kidnapping and transport a minor for criminal sexual activity, according to a 2024 U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Arizona news release.

00:00When you got the call that the door was broke, were you surprised the girls were still in there?
00:08Or did you think they were calling from another car?
00:12I was shocked as could possibly be. I had no idea they were in there.
00:16But I actually got panicked.
00:19When you left the last gas station that you stopped at, did you know that the girls were in the
00:24trailer?
00:27I did not.
00:32I apologize.
00:33Let me do a little further explain.
00:36I knew they were in there the whole time.
00:41But my plan was, when they got on the freeways, is to put them in there.
00:45Is to have them hop in the vehicle where they can be seated down.
00:48Because I was concerned about the 75 mile an hour speed units.
00:53And I saw Ruth get out of the trailer and head over to a different vehicle.
00:56And so I honestly thought, there's nobody in there.
01:00Or else, why on earth?
01:01But I'm left with the door open.
01:02I was glad you're right.
01:02It's good.
01:02And what are you doing?
01:03And you bet.
