00:08encounter that is now the subject of a judicial probe. Who was Bharat Bhushan Tiwari and why
00:13are some comparing him to Bhagat Singh? Bharat Tiwari had built a local falling on social
00:21media by raising issues such as flood displacement, land disputes and alleged government inaction.
00:25Tiwari was seen brandishing an illegal pistol, allegedly threatening officials
00:29and demanding action on local issues. Police say these videos prompted action against him.
00:44On June 16, police reached his half-built house. Videos were seen where Bharat was seen standing
00:49with a gun next to the police officers. He began a livestream around this time. His 1.6 lakh
00:54Facebook subscribers were watching the two-day standoff with the police. On June 17, a joint
00:58team of Bihar Police and the STF moved in to apprehend him. He was seen livestreaming the
01:03final moments before the fake encounter happened. Moments before the livestream ended, he apparently
01:16threw away his weapon. His family and supporters argued this shows he had surrendered and should
01:21not have been shot. Police maintained that Tiwari was armed and mentally unsound, leading them
01:34to shoot him in self-defense after attempts to bring him in peacefully-failed.
01:48Protests erupted in Bhojpur and nearby areas. FIRs have been registered against the police officials.
01:54Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary announced a high-level judicial probe into the incident on June 20.
01:59Bihar Education Minister, Mithilesh Tiwari, called it an unfortunate incident and said,
02:03If the encounter was necessary, then we should have half-countered.
