DC's newest superhero Milly Alcock and director Craig Gillespie sit down with Melissa Nathoo to talk all things Supergirl, including what unexpected thing Milly brought to the role and what makes somewhere feel like home. 00:08Can I just start off by saying I was so jealous that you just got to scream into the void
00:12in this one when you went up to space?
00:14I was like, we all need that in our lives. I wish that was something that we could do in
00:18real life.
00:18I have done it.
00:21Where do you go to do that? Just outside.
00:23Don't get any weird looks?
00:24I mean, you kind of do it in a private space.
00:27They go in the middle of the park and you scream.
00:29I'm going to try it.
00:30I think it's good.

00:36Congratulations on this. I mean, I knew that you were going to make a great Supergirl anyway.
00:40But when you came to it, was there one thing that you were like, I need to make sure I
00:44nail this from the offset?
00:47I think it's just all of it.
00:49Like, I think I just kind of really felt that I had to nail her because she is such a
00:55beloved character.
00:57And there's something about it where it's like the fans own the character in this way.
01:01So I really wanted them to be proud of her and to really adore her.
01:05But I also really wanted to nail her humility.
01:08I think her physicality is such a big part of this movie.
01:12So I just wanted to nail it all.
01:14I mean, everyone loved her from the second we saw that little glimpse of her in the last Superman film.
01:19So you already had that.
01:20You already won people over then.
01:22Craig, did Millie bring anything unexpected to Supergirl?
01:26There is a strength, which she'll probably not be loving here.
01:35But there's this kind of punk attitude to Millie that is captured on screen.
01:40That she really is her own person.
01:44And she doesn't tolerate fools.
01:50She's so grounded.
01:52And that, I think, we got to capture on film, which is amazing.
01:55And I think it worked so well for the character.
01:57So to have that, it was so well laid into the character with the script.
02:02And you brought that so beautifully.
02:04And that was really, really exciting to have that as the bed.
02:07And then on top of that, you got the humor.
02:09And then I could actually fly.
02:10And then you could act.
02:11Oh, of course.
02:11Yeah.
02:12It was like, whee!
02:14And the fact that she could actually fly.
02:16Yeah, it was amazing.
02:17It saved you a lot of money.
02:18Yeah, in post, yeah.
02:21She's, apart from the flying thing, the most real, though.
02:24I feel like we've had this Supergirl.
02:25Like, she felt so real.
02:27Is there any part of you that is very similar?
02:30All of it.
02:30I just can't actually fly.
02:32Yeah, no, I really adored playing Kara.
02:35I think she is so similar to me as a character.
02:40Which I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
02:42But I think that she's a beautiful example of someone within the superhero arena.
02:49And I think that as an audience, we've been told, kind of through these characters, we've
02:53been told who we should be through these archetypes.
02:55And I think Kara really reflects who we are.
02:57And I think that that's really refreshing.
03:00Yeah, we put them up on a pedestal sometimes.
03:02It's the perfect being.
03:03Yeah.
03:04And she's not.
03:04And she shows you who you are.
03:06And it makes you feel like, oh, yeah.
03:07And you're unapologetic about her.
03:09Yeah, for sure, for sure.
03:11And so much of this is her trying to work out how to feel at home on Earth.
03:16You know, Krypton was her home.
03:17Yeah.
03:18Obviously destroyed.
03:19Now she's got to try and find this, make Earth her home.
03:21And I feel like having Krypto there is what makes it feel like home for her in a way.
03:26So for you guys, other than your family, what makes somewhere feel like home?
03:30Probably the cat, but he would hate that.
03:32Yeah, but I didn't have family.
03:33I did have family.
03:34The cat is the family.
03:36Oh, that's true.
03:36I guess if I had to take it out, it would be the smell in the air.
03:39Yeah, that's a good one.
03:40It's a sensory thing.
03:42Yeah.
03:42Yeah.
03:43The firmness of the bed.
03:45I love that.
03:46The bed has to be the perfect.
03:48The perfectness.
03:49That's why you take your mattress with you.
03:50Yeah, it's costing DC a fortune.
03:53I can't tell.
03:54I couldn't tell if that was real or not.
03:56I'm joking.
03:57I'm not trapped in the mattress.
03:59I wish that was my mattress.
