00:00You're my anchor.
00:01Oh, she got it in.
00:03She got it in.
00:04She got it in.
00:05She's winning, by the way.
00:07It's lovely to see the both of you.
00:08I love when we get a story from, like, your childhood
00:11that just kind of makes you feel more warm and fuzzy inside,
00:14that familiarity.
00:15You two together as well.
00:17I know you've worked together before.
00:18How easy was it to be that mean to each other?
00:21Not easy for me at all.
00:24I mean, she's literally one of my favorite people on the planet.
00:27We've known each other for over 20 years.
00:30She's one of my best friends.
00:32And we had to play enemies.
00:35And the big moment for me was this moment where there's a scene
00:40she's throwing up over the side of the boat.
00:42I come in, I accost her, and I'm bellowing at her,
00:46you know, in the midst of this wind, and it's a storm,
00:50and there's a whole thing.
00:51And we did the rehearsal.
00:53And I had to sort of take myself away
00:55because I was so thrown by looking at one of my best
00:59friend's faces and being so mean.
01:03And my brain was sort of melting, going,
01:07oh, Hayley, while shouting at her in this Jamaican accent
01:12and holding her down with the crotch.
01:14And the wind is going, and she's leaning over.
01:17And all I wanted to do was kind of pull her in
01:20from the side of the boat.
01:21So I had to go and take myself to the side and go, that is not Hayley.
01:24That is Bess Hawkins.
01:25You are not doing your job very well at the moment.
01:28She would want this.
01:30She would want this for you.
01:32So I came back, and it was kind of OK.
01:35But I've never had that before professionally.
01:38I've never had a moment.
01:39I've worked with friends before.
01:40But you know, just not a situation where I had to go,
01:44I'm being bad in the scene because of the relationship I have
01:48with this person off screen.
01:49So anyway, that was pretty tough for me.
01:51It never showed, though.
01:52It never showed that the chat.
01:54Oh, really?
01:54No.
01:55Because in my mind, what was happening is,
01:58what was really hard for me is when he was so menacing and terrifying.
02:05Internally, I was going, oh, wow, that's fantastic.
02:08So I wanted to be like, so I had to be scared.
02:13But I was equally going, this is amazing.
02:20You transformed.
02:21So I had to sort of hold that in.
02:23But I think that also the challenge
02:25is that one of my favorite things to do in my life,
02:28in the world ever, is make David laugh.
02:30It's the most wonderful feeling.
02:32She's very good at it.
02:32And we did a lot in between takes.
02:34And there's also when we were doing the photo approvals
02:36of sort of like on set, you know, behind stills.
02:39There's one.
02:40And I'm sure I'm just telling, repeating that same story
02:43I told you from 20 years ago.
02:44And his face has just lost it.
02:46And I'm just going.
02:49And it sort of, it captures our friendship.
02:52It does.
02:52So it feels very different,
02:55playing different characters like this.
02:57But then also for me, I think because there is that trust there,
03:01we could go harder with each other probably.
03:04Because the ice was broken.
03:06Because, you know, and I know David's heart.
03:0820 years of ice breaking.
03:10Yeah.
03:10I had no idea there was this kind of friendship.
03:12Like, I knew you'd work together.
03:13I didn't know that.
03:13You were so close.
03:15Yeah.
03:15So sweet.
03:15Yeah.
03:16Both David and his wife are very important people in my life.
03:21And the mentorship that they both give me
03:23in terms of navigating this industry as a woman,
03:25and as a friend, as a human being, are, you know,
03:29the care that they have showed me and continue to show me
03:32really helps to ground me in the way that I am in the world.
03:37You know, he's, um, you're my anchor.
03:40Oh, she got it in.
03:42She got it in.
03:43She got it in.
03:44She's winning, by the way, with the amount of references.
03:46I'm trying to get as many puns in.
03:48Yeah, yeah.
03:48Love that.
03:49Ship references, yeah.
03:50It makes these things a lot easier, doesn't it?
03:52A little fun, because I know it could be a lot.
03:54Yeah.
03:54Not when you're losing, which I currently am, by the way.
03:57Yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:58Do you like that?
03:58It was a very genuine compliment, followed by that.
04:01Ah, she got it, she got it.
04:02Well done.
04:04I hope you win.
04:05I hope you win by the end of the day.
04:07In the same way, though, that David, you, I know,
04:08have wanted to do this role since you were a kid, right?
04:11Like, it's been that role.
04:12Heidi, have you got a role that you've always wanted to do
04:14since you were a kid?
04:15No, because I want to do them all.
04:19There's not one.
04:20I think there's, I think that there is a, for me, kind of over time,
04:23I think there has been a running theme about a character
04:26who is trying to overcome or break through something
04:29or begins with a feeling of sort of trapped in some way
04:31and seeks some sort of release of that or freedom.
04:35That seems to be a thing that I'm sort of naturally drawn to
04:38and I wonder if that's what that says.
04:41But I've also watched her, in our very long-running friendship, go from…
04:46You're saying I'm old?
04:47Yes, but also that we're old friends.
04:51Yeah.
04:52And I've watched her have aspirations towards a certain archetype of woman
04:59that I think early on in her career felt inaccessible to her
05:04as a younger woman, as a beautiful woman, as someone who our industry tends to not afford
05:11that kind of agency and opportunity.
05:13And I remember many years ago, yes, we're old, us walking through a park in New York
05:20and I remember you talking about the kind of roles you would want to play,
05:26but just feeling like they were, are they even going to be accessible?
05:31Am I going to have to create them?
05:33And she created Bess Hawkins to a certain extent.
05:37Yes, Robert Murphy had put a sort of framework on the page, but so much, you know,
05:43the fighting in it, the agency she has in it as a character, the disposition she has.
05:51There are lines that, you know, just have a spin to them in the way that she does it.
05:56That took me back to that conversation we had had back in the day.
06:00And I went, my gosh, she is living the thing that she was hoping for back then.
06:04And that to me was also one of the beautiful things about getting to do this job.
06:09Did you, do you know about my homage to Cher?
06:12No.
06:12Yeah.
06:13In the, in the show?
06:14Yeah.
06:14In this?
06:15When is the, when is that?
06:17We got a, Robert Murphy and I sort of reworked this, this kind of moment.
06:21And I, I, I quoted Cher and he went, okay.
06:25Wow.
06:25So it's not exactly the Cher's quote, of course, but I'm asked at one point,
06:31you know, I talk about my ambitions and what I want my life to be like.
06:34And so the character opposite me says, oh, so, well, in order to do that, you, you want to
06:39marry a rich man.
06:41And I say, no, no, I want to be a rich man.
06:45And I had remembered Cher had said something similar about, I am a rich man.
06:49Like I've, I have been the thing that my mother told me I should marry.
06:53And, um, and I, I felt that was something so sort of made true to, to me as a, as
06:58a person,
06:59as an actor, um, but also for Bess.
07:02You really feel it when you say that line.
07:05I didn't know it had that back story.
07:07I didn't know it had that.
07:07I heard it and it stuck with me, but I didn't realize it was a, but also today seeing like
07:13your friendship and learning more about it and seeing the way that you look each,
07:15each other when you're talking about each other is so sweet.
07:19Oh, it's so lovely to get those little insights.
07:21So thank you for sharing because it's really lovely and good luck.
07:24Good luck with this guys.
