00:31Hello, everybody. It is Monday, September, the 22nd series.
00:3592 of Countdown is in full flow now.
00:38And, of course, on Friday, we crowned our fourth octo-champ of the series.
00:42Rarely a more popular octo-champ in the history of Countdown.
00:45Our Kieran became number four, so here's the number five.
00:49Yes, look, showing no sign of fatigue well into the second half of the series,
00:54our guardian of the dictionary, Susie Dent.
00:55And that's because we get to welcome so many great people to Dictionary Corner.
00:59Another debutante, an Ainsley, Harriet.
01:02And, of course, to welcome him properly is our queen of numbers, Rachel Riley.
01:07And, hey, Rich, no better way to welcome a new Dictionary Corner guest
01:11than our tried-and-tested, top-of-show chat, fantasy birthday party.
01:15Now, this is where you get to choose which birthday party you go to
01:18of two people who are celebrating a birthday today.
01:21We have never all agreed.
01:22That's what we're waiting for.
01:23Right, first birthday party, the regaled and renowned opera singer,
01:31the tenor, Andrea Bocelli.
01:34Or the comedian, the performer, the brilliant, ever-popular Sue Perkins.
01:40Bocelli Perkins.
01:41No-one's ever had this conversation.
01:43Your face twin.
01:45My face twin.
01:46I mean, I would like to go just to see both of you in the room
01:50at the same time, just to show that you are different people.
01:53Do you know what?
01:54Next time Sue Perkins comes up on the show,
01:57I'll bring my old glasses with me.
01:59So she became way more popular and she's way more talented.
02:01We looked very like each other when I was clean-shaven with my glasses.
02:05So I got rid of the glasses and now even have a beard.
02:08Yeah.
02:08I'm obviously going to go to Sue's party.
02:10Where are you going?
02:10I'm going to Andrea Bocelli's.
02:13Really?
02:13I mean, you've got the music, he's Italian,
02:16so there's probably good food.
02:17I mean, I'm always thinking about the food.
02:19You're right.
02:19We're talking about the food, we're talking about, you know...
02:22It just brings a bit of class to the whole thing, doesn't he, Rachel?
02:26I think so.
02:27There's a fine line between class and pretentiousness.
02:29Ooh!
02:30Where are you going?
02:32I am definitely going to Sue's party.
02:34Yeah!
02:35I don't think anyone could take over from Nicholas Parsons
02:38on the comedy radio show, just a minute.
02:41Yes.
02:41But she has and she is absolutely phenomenal.
02:43So, yeah, always Sue.
02:44Great shout.
02:45Yes, there you go.
02:45We'll go to that.
02:46And yet again, we are divided.
02:48I love it.
02:49Well, listen, the only two we need to worry about
02:51is our two new challengers.
02:52I always think it's an interesting show.
02:55A bit less pressure, maybe, and I hope you both really enjoy it.
02:57Jason McNulty, originally from our Brolston, Scotland, joins us here.
03:01How are you doing, mate?
03:02I'm very good, thank you.
03:03Listen, Chef in Dictionary Corner, Chef sitting right here.
03:06Let's talk about you and little Reuben, your son,
03:08because your favourite pastime, isn't it,
03:10is baking together and being in the kitchen.
03:12Yeah, we spend quite a lot of time baking Rice Krispie cakes.
03:16Well, I bake them, he eats them.
03:19It's a nice, simple thing.
03:21Maybe move on to brownies, just as simple.
03:24I would, but the last time I made brownies,
03:26I overcooked them by about two hours.
03:30You need to get that timing, right?
03:32Not just in the kitchen, but on countdown.
03:34Strict 30 seconds around, right?
03:36You'll be up against Jotie Madlani, who joins us.
03:38Originally from Leicester, now living a high life in London.
03:42And this is great, right?
03:44So, how, you're only 37 now.
03:47How quickly did you do your 40 countries before you're 40?
03:50Because you did it ages ago, right?
03:52Probably about 35.
03:53That's amazing.
03:54But there was one of them, was particularly eventful.
03:57Tell us what happened when you went to Peru.
03:59So, I was on a sabbatical about three years ago from work
04:02for three months.
04:03So, I started off in Colombia, went to Ecuador,
04:06got to Peru and, yeah, it was in 2020.
04:09So, I'm sure we can guess what happened.
04:11Got completely locked down in Peru.
04:12So, we were in Cusco, waiting to see Machu Picchu the next day.
04:16That completely shut down.
04:17So, yeah, I was stuck in a hostel for five weeks.
04:20Listen, I can think of worse places to get stuck, by the way.
04:23I think many of us might have been in them.
04:24So, not too bad, I suppose.
04:26Well, Jyoti, let's see how long we'll be stuck with you here.
04:29Up to maximum of eight shows.
04:30T-Pop being handed out today.
04:32Jyoti or Jason's going to get it.
04:34Good luck to both.
04:36Jason, let's kick off this week.
04:38Hi, Rachel.
04:39Hi, Jason.

05:56Excellent.
05:57Well done.
05:57Over to Dictionary Corner then.
05:59It's a nervous moment as well for Ainsley.
06:01It's your first letters round.
06:02How did you do?
06:03I was a little bit nervous because I keep thinking about, you know,
06:05I'm going on Countdown and all of these guys can come up with six,
06:09seven letters.
06:10But I first came up with Swirl, then I thought Walrus.
06:14Yes.
06:15Coo-coo-ca-choo.
06:16Well done.
06:17Well done.
06:17Yeah, Walrus is lovely.
06:19There's six.
06:19There is an eight there.

06:23Of course.
06:24So this is a fossil marine reptile with a short neck,
06:28large head and massive jaws.
06:30Excellent.
06:30There you go.
06:31Let's get more letters now, Jotie.

30:15A risky seven.
30:17OK, interesting time to take a risk when you're 22 points in the lead.
30:21Jason?
30:22Steep.
30:22What are you risking here, Jotie?
30:24Bow ties.
30:25Ah, I think we're going to find it is two words.
30:29Oh!
30:29Yes.
30:30Oh, I'm sorry, Jotie.
30:32Many would have played it safe,
30:34but the punters will pay money to see that
30:36when you've got that lead and taken the risk.
30:39Yeah.
30:39All right.
30:40You see, I thought I'd had a terrible round there, Jason,
30:42because I couldn't get beyond, like, poets.
30:45So, please help us out here, Susie and Ainsley.
30:48Um, website.
30:49Yeah, it's brilliant.
30:50So, that's a seven.
30:52Can we go further?
30:52That's a seven.
30:53No, but another lovely one is a peewit.
30:55Yeah.
30:55Lovely bird.
30:56Good.
30:57You can look it up online if you don't know what we're talking about.
30:59So, there you go.
31:00Points for Jason.
31:01Keeps the dream alive.
31:03The gambler, Jotie.
31:05Final numbers, you're picking.
31:07One large, please, Rachel.
31:08Thank you, Jotie.
31:09One from the top and five little this to seal the deal.
31:11The game is still on.
31:13Final numbers, two, nine, five, three, ten, and 75.
31:21And the target, 656.
31:24Six, five, six.
31:25Numbers up.
31:265, three, four, five.
31:566, 5, 6. Under pressure, Jotie.
32:00I've written it down wrong, sorry.
32:02Oh, Jason! 6, 5, 6, I think. Off you go!
32:0675 minus 3.
32:0872. Times 9.
32:11Times 9 is 648.
32:15Plus 10.
32:176, 5, 8. Minus the 2.
32:20And then you've got two left over and it's definitely game on.
32:23Well done.
32:26Well, early doors, it looked all over,
32:30but Madlani took a mad gamble
32:32and now McNulty has taken it down to the wire.
32:35Let's reveal our crucial Countdown Conundrum.
32:42Jotie! Concocted.
32:43Oh, my goodness, me!
32:46Oh!
32:49Sensational, sensational.
32:51Jason, first of all, what a battle. Never gave up.
32:54We see it, blinded by the lights, but you never did that.
32:58You stuck with it.
32:59Ruben's going to be so proud watching it back.
33:01Thank you so much.
33:04Jotie, you gambled in the last letters, right?
33:06What was that about?
33:07What was that about?
33:08Then the numbers you went safe and missed it.
33:11To put yourself focused like that and get it in a second is unbelievable.
33:16As soon as it revealed, you must have been so happy.
33:18I was.
33:19I don't know why I gambled.
33:21I don't know.
33:21But listen, I know the teapot will mean the world to you.
33:24We'll talk about it at the top of tomorrow's show when you're coming back.
33:27This is a proper Countdown fan goes all the way back to birth.
33:30So we'll talk about that.
33:31And we'll see you tomorrow.
33:32Well done.
33:33Yes.
33:35And there you go, Harriet.
33:36First show.
33:37Are you happy enough?
33:38Delighted.
33:38Absolutely delighted.
33:39And, you know, sometimes you look at the programme, Colin,
33:43and you kind of think, I just can't work it out.
33:46But then having Sue here and just kind of...
33:48And you start relaxing into it a little bit more.
33:51And so, thank you.
33:52It's been a joy.
33:53And thank you guys.
33:55Wonderfully entertaining seeing you come up with all these ideas.
33:58Brilliant.
33:58And, Susie, from our point of view, the first ever food-related dictionary corner,
34:02guess who didn't bring us something?
34:03Well, no, I was wondering if it was under the desk,
34:07but it's not that I can see.
34:09I'll get some brownies from you, can't I?
34:11No, whatever you do, we don't want any brownies from Jason.
34:14We like that.
34:15Brilliant.
34:16We will see you tomorrow.
34:17Excellent stuff.
34:18See you.
34:18Hey, hey, Rach, from one OctoChamp possibly to another.
34:2195 in her debut.
34:23Yeah, this could be a good bet.
34:24Yeah, let's see.
34:25We'll see tomorrow.
34:26One game at a time.
34:27Rachel, Susie and I waiting for you.
34:29You can count on us.
34:31You can contact the programme by email at countdown at channel4.com.
