00:00Good afternoon.
00:29And welcome to the Countdown studio at the start of bloody Scotland.
00:35Well, actually, that's a three day literary festival celebrating the crime novel, bringing together not only Scottish writers, but also international writers of the crime genre.
00:47Huge market for it. We've spoken in the past, of course, about the great TV, the box sets, the great TV crime dramas, but there's a massive market for the crime novel.
00:56And I guess one of my favourites is the stream of books that come from the pen of Martin Cruz Smith, an American, I think of Native American extraction.
01:09What a writer he is. But I don't know whether anybody can beat old Martin Cruz Smith.
01:14What about you? Have you ever been gripped by a crime thriller?
01:18Oh, well, in a way, because the type of books I enjoy reading are footballers autobiographies.
01:24Oh, so there's a few dodgy characters in there. I liked Ibrahimović's book.
01:29That was my favourite one I've read recently. And he used to nick the odd bike or two back in his early days in Sweden.
01:35But a good, a good kind of like a good scoundrel, happy scoundrel.
01:40Great footballer. Great footballer. Yeah. All right. Sarah, welcome back. Big win yesterday. Impressive debut. Well done indeed.
01:50You got your teapot. Do not take your foot off the pedal now, you know.
01:54I'll try not to. Yeah. People say, oh, I've got, that's all I came for was the teapot.
01:58No, you didn't. You're coming to become an OctoChamp. And to get there, you've got to beat Mandy Walker.
02:04Welcome, Mandy, a retired teacher from Powis, who once hired a motorbike, came to a sticky end.
02:11Tell us a little about that. Accidentally, I drove it off a cliff with me still on it.
02:19Really? Yes. And where did this take place?
02:21This was in Ibiza. It was a long time ago. I'm pretty sure it was Ibiza.
02:26Yes. I've tried to forget about it. It wasn't late at night, was it?
02:30It wasn't, no. But apparently you told me you knew how to fall because you'd been taking some lessons in skydiving.
02:37So you didn't come to any harm. No, I was very, very lucky. But I never skydived again.
02:44Indeed. Or indeed drove a motorbike off a cliff, I hope.
02:47But Ibiza, we were having a little chat before the show. You told me you had visited 41 countries on six continents.
02:54An amazing number of countries. Good for you. You were an adventurous.
02:57What better way? What better way to spend your youth?
03:00Big round of applause for Mandy and Sarah.
03:07And over in the corner, Susie, joined once again by our wonderful Gloria Hunneford.
03:13It's interesting you were talking about crime. I won't remember the actual percentage,
03:18but women are the biggest watchers of crime. So you'd better watch out.
03:24Yeah. But they are, which I thought was quite interesting.
03:26So, because there's so many box sets, as you imagine, of crime series, etc.
03:30I wonder why that is.
03:32It's ways to murder your husband.
03:36Probably.
03:37All right.
03:37Or fall off a cliff like Mandy.
03:39Indeed. More from you later, madam.
03:41But right now, we turn to Sarah. Sarah Holy. Let us go.

05:05You might have had an outrider on that particular trip you went over the place.
05:08It would have helped.
05:09Well done. That's a seven, Susie.
05:11Yeah, that was the best we could do, Nick.

12:26I'm very good at bartering.
12:28Absolutely.
12:29Yeah, very good at that.
12:31Amazing.
12:34My mother does embarrass me so much about bartering.
12:36You've got the best you can do.
12:38I find myself doing it all the time.
12:40And my grandchildren even are embarrassed now.

13:12MUSIC CONTINUES
13:42MUSIC CONTINUES
14:12Roger Moore, Sir Roger Moore, yesterday.
14:14You want to talk about another great actor today?
14:17Yes.
14:17I mean, I'd have to say that I've been very lucky
14:20in my professional career to interview a lot of people.
14:23If you're in it for 100 years,
14:24you're going to interview a lot of people.
14:26And when you do a chat show,
14:30which I did a programme called Sunday Sunday,
14:32obviously, as you do the big introduction,
14:34the host goes forward.
14:35It's all a bit of kissy-poos, et cetera, et cetera,
14:37and all of that.
14:38So Richard Harris, who was a brilliant, brilliant interviewee,
14:42very, very graphic, et cetera.
14:45So I'd asked him about a very bad accident that he'd had.
14:48We'd have a lot of skin grafting.
14:51And so we were talking to my dad,
14:52and he said, by the way, I must tell you,
14:54he said, you know when I came on and you kissed my cheek?
14:57He said, actually, you kissed my ass.
15:00He was a wild one, wasn't he?
15:05Wild, but brilliant as an interviewee.
15:07But the other story was a true story,
15:09a friend of mine told me.
15:10Piers Brosnan hangs out in a place called Dorky,
15:14south of Dublin, quite a bit.
15:15And nobody pays any attention to big names
15:17because Bono lives there, you know, Sinead O'Connor,
15:22a lot of the Formula One people, et cetera.
15:24So Piers is always glad to get back to his local pub.
15:27So he kind of, like, breathed that sourly,
15:30finished filming, settled back in the chair
15:32with a big broad sheet, you know,
15:34the Irish Times or something.
15:35And all of a sudden, these two nicotine fingers
15:39just go like this with a newspaper,
15:41and they sort of bring it down.
15:43And this guy goes, Ocknell Pierce, he said,
15:46I know that you just want to have a quiet moment,
15:48and I know you're glad to be back home and everything,
15:50but he said, I just want to shake your hand.
15:52So he goes, will you shake my hand?
15:54So he goes, shake your hand.
15:55And he said, that's the closest I'll ever get
15:57to Halle Berry's ass.
16:03Oh, they're lovely.
16:05Forgive me for the word, but anyway,
16:08can't tell it without.
16:09But that's Dublin humour, isn't it?
16:11Oh, brilliant.
16:11I mean, I love all the, like, true stories.
16:14Brilliant stuff.
16:1545 plays 20.
16:16Mandy on 20.
16:17And it's Sarah we turn to.
16:18Sarah.

19:09Didn't get any of that.
19:10No, it was really tough, that one.
19:11It was tough.
19:12Anything at all?
19:13Yeah, there is a seven there.
19:15Turions.
19:15T-U-R-I-O-N-S.
19:17Botanical term describing in some aquatic plants a bud which becomes detached and then remains
19:23dormant at the bottom of the water.
19:25It's at this point.
19:26You know, it's at this point that one feels totally useless.
19:30No.
19:30This is the dictionary speaking.
19:32Yes.
19:32I know, but even so.
19:33You are far from useless, let me tell you that.
19:3651 plays 28.
19:38And Sarah, numbers game.
19:40I'll have two large and four small, please.
19:42You can indeed.

22:33Yes, Mandy?
22:45I've completely lost the plot here.
22:48I'm going to go for an extremely dodgy six.
22:50All right. And Sarah?
22:53I'll try a seven.
22:56Now, Mandy, what is this of which you speak?
22:58It's not actually English.
23:00This may be a problem.
23:02This is what makes it dodgy.
23:03Go on.
23:04Lumiere?
23:05Lumiere.
23:06A Lumiere.
23:07Nice word, though.
23:08You need two E's for Lumiere if it was French,
23:11but it's not in, unfortunately.
23:14Sorry.
23:15Bad luck.
23:16Worth a shot. Go on, Sarah.
23:17I'm going to try Smilers.
23:19Yeah, you can be a Smiler.
23:21Pretty sure.
23:21Yeah, you can. That's absolutely fine.
23:23Well done.
23:24There's also Maulers.
23:26M-A-U-L-E-R-S.
23:29Yeah.
23:29I love you.
23:30Won't go there for seven.
23:31I hope not.
23:31All right, well done.
23:3368 to 28.
23:34And, Sarah, your letters came.

24:36Yes, Sarah.
24:38Safe six.

24:41And that five.
24:42Count.
24:43Count.
24:45And.
24:45Toucan.
24:46Toucan.
24:47I was busy thinking of the other one, which is Faction, which is seven.
24:52Susie.
24:52Faction was our best.
24:54Well done.
24:54Well done indeed.
24:55Which was good enough.
24:56Yeah.
24:5774 plays 28 as we turn to Susie.
25:00Now, Susie, what have you for us today and your origins of words?
25:04Well, I had a tweet in from Danny Smith in Southampton, who asked why when we escape from something or somebody, do we get off Scott free?
25:14And the expression has nothing to do with Scotland.
25:16You probably would expect it to.
25:18But its story instead began in Scandinavia, where Scott, S-K-O-T, particularly in Old Icelandic, was a word for a payment or a tax.
25:27And when the word came into English in the 12th century, it described specifically those taxes that were paid by feudal tenants to their ruler in proportion to their ability to pay.
25:38In other words, they were means tested.
25:39So those who had little or no money at all could go without paying the equivalent, perhaps, of council taxes today.
25:48And they, consequently, could go Scott free.
25:51They would not have to pay the Scott and could just happily go on their way.
25:55Although, as I say, they didn't have too much money to go on.
25:57But before long, the expression then encompassed the more general meaning of going without punishment of some kind, which is how we ended up with Scott today.
26:04But there were lots of other Scots or taxes during this period.
26:08So a sole Scott, for example, was a tax paid to the parish on behalf of a deceased person.
26:14And Rome Scott was an annual payment made to the Pope, as this was pre-Reformation England.
26:20But a Scott ale was probably the most curious thing.
26:22And it was a festivity held by the Lord of the Manor.
26:25And an ale was a party of massive gathering, lots of drinking, which is how we got to our modern version of ale today.
26:33So a bride ale was a wedding feast originally, and that gave us the word bridal.
26:37But this Scott ale, as I say, was held by the Lord of the Manor, but attendance was compulsory.
26:42In other words, every single person in the village or the town had to go to this Scott ale.
26:47But it also carried a really hefty cover charge, hence the Scott.
26:51In other words, you had to pay to be there, even if you didn't want to go.
26:54So I think it was divided between fairly unhappy villagers who went, paid their money, and simply stood there for the sake of it,
27:01and others that decided to get in on the action, if you like, or the spirit of the thing, and then became very, very heady on ale.
27:09But, yeah, Scott free was something those people who went to the Scott ale did not benefit from.
27:14They had to pay this cover charge.
27:16But Scott was all about payment and taxes.
27:19Fantastic.
27:19Never, ever phased by a nine.
27:28I know.
27:29Fantastic.
27:30And interesting.

32:43Mandy, you came up against a brilliant player, and we forgot to write one down.
32:49But never mind.
32:51Never mind.
32:51It wouldn't have made a great deal of difference, but it would have helped me.
32:54You did.
32:54Okay.
32:55Let me tell you.
32:55Here's your goodie bag.

33:52He really did have two years of not sleeping and waking up nightmares.
33:57And even when everything was cleared.
33:59Yeah.
33:59But he's been making good progress this year with everything that he wanted to do.
34:03Yeah.
