00:00Thank you very much.
00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio on our second quarter-final day of Series 76.
00:37All to play for, all to play for.
00:40We have two great contestants here.
00:42First, did you know that tomorrow is Bring Your Dog to Work Day?
00:46Now, apparently this is an annual nationwide event.
00:51And the money raised then goes to all those charities that support the welfare and happiness of our canine friends.
00:59And I was beginning to think, did I ever take my dog to work?
01:02And I did once, actually.
01:03It was a great success.
01:05And apparently everybody's very happy if there's an animal around.
01:08And little Jasmine had a great time running around.
01:11And I thought, because you know I'm without her now.
01:13She's been gone for some time.
01:16And I'm on the lookout for another one.
01:18And this gave me a thought.
01:19If I had the right dog, I could bring her in here or him in here.
01:23Yes!
01:24A corgi could lie along there or dashing.
01:26But if you had a great day and you could just stand it here with his head.
01:29You'd just see his head.
01:31What do you think?
01:32I think it'd be more like your kind of eye line for a great day.
01:35Up here?
01:35Yeah, you can ride him in.
01:36If he was sitting down, all right, I'll go for a tall lab then or a greyhound.
01:40So we'll do that then.
01:42Okay, lovely.
01:42I have to ask, I suppose.
01:43Actually, I think they can sit over here with me.
01:45Because I've got 30 seconds every round while everyone else is busy.
01:48I can look after your dog.
01:50I can personally volunteer any time.
01:52Make a fuss of it.
01:53All right.
01:53Now, who's here?
01:54Jeff Clayton's with us.
01:55A transport planner from Essex.
01:57We saw him become an octo-champ at the start of April, amassing 846 points, which makes him our number two seed.
02:05Welcome back, Jeff.
02:06Thank you, Nick.
02:07Welcome back.
02:08And you're joined by Laurie Collingwood, a retired teacher from Barton-upon-Humber, qualified as our seventh seed back in March, collecting 734 points along the way.
02:20So two cracking good players.
02:23Are you both feeling comfortable and competitive?
02:26Certainly competitive, yeah.
02:27Let's see whether the seeding works then.
02:29Good luck to you both.
02:30Big round of applause for Laurie and Jeff.
02:38And Susie's over there.
02:39In fact, the Susies are over there.
02:40Susie Dent, of course, and the wonderful Susie Perry.
02:43Now, for the last time, before she heads off back to the track.
02:46More about that later.
02:47But now, Jeff Clayton, let's go.
02:50Let us go.
02:51Thank you, Nick.
02:52Hello, Rachel.

04:05And Laurie.
04:07Faux-vism.
04:08Oh, I'm so sorry, Laurie.
04:09It's just a faux-vism is there with a capital F,
04:11style of painting with vivid expressionistic use of colour,
04:15but definitely a capital F.
04:16Sorry.
04:16Well, that is bad luck.
04:18They were all centred on collure on the French-Spanish border.
04:21Wonderful stuff, actually.
04:22Yeah.
04:23Bad luck.
04:24What else have we got in the corner, I wonder?
04:26Erm, yeah, tricky, that one, wasn't it?
04:28We got radius for a six.
04:31Yes.
04:32And I only got fives apart from that.
04:35Yep.
04:35All right.
04:36So Geoff's off to a quick start.
04:39Bad luck there, Laurie.

05:55Very hard.
05:56And in the corner, can we get past four?
05:59No.
06:00I've got ward, but not anything more than ward.
06:03That was so hard.
06:04Very tricky.
06:05We needed an E.
06:07Yes.
06:07Who's new to me?
06:09You can't have one.
06:10Can we do it again?
06:11Let's have that one again.
06:13All right.
06:13Ten plays four.
06:15And now, Jeff, it's numbers time.

07:27And the other 4 for 5, 7, 2, 1 below.
07:30There we go.
07:31So, 5, 7, 3.
07:33It was possible, this one,
07:34if you say 9 minus 4 is 5.
07:38Times the other 4 is 20.
07:40Times 10 is 200.
07:42Minus the other 9 for 191.

07:47Oh, well done.
07:48Very good.
07:51Excellent.

07:53Dobbs, Laurie's 4.
07:55Plenty of time.
07:56Plenty of time.
07:57Let's have a tea time teaser.

08:04He's welcoming new technology

09:58Very good.
10:00And what else have we got, Amanda?
10:02Susie's?
10:02Nothing else exciting.
10:03We had realtors as well.
10:05Solter, you could have had for six.
10:07Saltier.
10:07Solter, seven.
10:09Yeah, realist, that kind of thing.

11:26A writer.
11:27And Laurie?
11:27Yeah, I was a writer as well.
11:29You were.
11:29Any advances on seven, I wonder?
11:32No advances, but for another seven, what about hurtier?
11:37Hurtier.
11:38A strange word.
11:39It is, and I think probably almost always going to be used tongue-in-cheek, so, you know,
11:45sort of the hurty places, all my hurty teeth, that kind of thing.
11:48But it's specified in the dictionary, so we can have it.
11:52Well done.
11:52All right.
11:54And now, Laurie, it's your numbers game.
11:57I'm out of five, right?
11:58Thank you, Laurie.
12:00Back to one from the top three this time.
12:02And these five smalls are five, eight, one, six, two, and the large one, 25.
12:11And your target, 290.

12:47Thank you, Geoff.
12:48290.
12:49Laurie.
12:5125 plus 5 minus 1 is 29.
12:53It is.
12:548 plus 2 is 10.
12:55Lovely.
12:56290.
12:57And Geoff.
12:58Different method.
12:5925 plus 6 plus 5 is 36.
13:02Yep.
13:03Multiplied by 8 for 288.
13:08288.
13:09And add 2.
13:10That'll do.
13:11290, lovely.
13:12Well done.
13:13Well done.
13:15So 42 plays 29 as we turn to Susie.
13:19Susie Perry.
13:20And, you know, you're jetting off around the world all the time
13:23because each country's got to have its sort of big race.
13:27And you're there commentating on it.
13:28But occasionally you get home.
13:30And what's it like when you walk through that front door?
13:34Well, it's a complete 180, really, of my working life.
13:38So it's, I'm probably talking more about, I've got a house in France, which I go to when I'm not working.
13:45And it's a bit like The Good Life.
13:49Do you remember that in the 70s, that great comedy show?
13:53So we've got a little bit of land.
13:56And it's on the side of a mountain.
13:58So we're quite remote.
14:00We're not near to anybody.
14:01One day we had, well, quite a funny incident, really.
14:05There's a walk at the back of the house, which my husband had gone on.
14:09We go regularly up there.
14:10It's glorious.
14:11And as he was walking back, he saw a donkey.
14:15Now, they often rent out donkeys where we've got this house, you know, just to clear the area and things.
14:19And this donkey obviously managed to escape and was just wandering free.
14:23And so he fussed the donkey and carried on walking after he said goodbye to the donkey.
14:28Walked down.
14:29We're a bit mad about animals at our house.
14:32And he realised the donkey was following him.
14:34So he picked up the speed a little bit.
14:37And they could hear the donkey walking a bit faster behind him.
14:40And in the end, he said, I sort of started running.
14:43And I could hear the donkey galloping behind me.
14:46And I knew it was going to follow us home.
14:48So I stopped and I hid behind a tree.
14:50And the donkey went straight past, hurtling past him.
14:53But then stopped.
14:54And I had these visions of like, stopping.
14:57And then he said the donkey turned around and saw him and waited for him.
15:01Anyway, he couldn't get rid of this donkey.
15:03So it came home.
15:05So I came back from the shops to a donkey at the back door.
15:08And I walked, so what, you know, there's a donkey.
15:12And he told me the story.
15:13Anyway, this donkey, it stayed at our house for the best part of two months.
15:18Yeah.
15:18So it would just come.
15:19We'd feed it carrots.
15:20And then it would go off, wander off.
15:22And it would come back.
15:23Anyway, a couple of months later, finally, the owner, who's a guy who walks around with a rope for a belt.
15:28You know, he really lives off the grid.
15:30He said, have you seen a donkey?
15:31And we said, yes, we have.
15:33Because this donkey used to bray when we were leaving.
15:36He'd get really annoyed, you know, if we weren't around.
15:38Anyway, he took the donkey back.
15:39So that was the end of the donkey for us.
15:42What a sweet story.
15:43What a great story.
15:44Yeah, but you never know, you know, what's going to be there.
15:47And we've got lots of wild cats that come.
15:49So it's glorious.
15:50Loads of butterflies.
15:51And, you know, it's just tremendous to be there to unwind.
15:54It's great.
15:54And I've got lots of cats.
15:56So, you know, I'm a mad cat lady.
15:59Sounds idyllic.
16:00Now, 42 plays 29.
16:07Geoff in the lead.
16:08And it's Geoff's letters game now.
16:09Geoff.
16:11Consonant plays.
16:12Thank you, Geoff.

17:14Try a seven.
17:15A seven.
17:16Laurie?
17:17Only five.
17:18And that five?
17:19Goals.
17:21Geoff?
17:22Analogues.
17:23Oh, Geoff, I'm sure you were wondering about this,
17:26but that is the American spelling.
17:28You do have to have the U and the E, I'm afraid,
17:30for British spelling.
17:31Apologies.
17:32OK.
17:33What can we have, I wonder?
17:35Tricky, that one, wasn't it?
17:36I got a slogan.
17:38Mm-hm.
17:38It's for six.
17:39Yeah.
17:40And you got a bird, didn't you?
17:41Yes, a songbird that lives in Madagascar called a vanga,
17:44and you can put an S on there,
17:45so vangas would give you a six as well.
17:48Listen to those vangas.
17:50Yes.
17:50All right.
17:5142 plays 34, and Laurie,
17:54your letters game has come around.
17:57Valpid, Rachel.

19:58Yes, Jeff, 469, and Laurie, no, I lost it, lost it, no, bad luck, Jeff, five plus two
20:27is seven, yep, six plus four is ten, seven times ten is 70, it is indeed, take away three
20:35is 67, and multiplied by seven, perfect, well done, 469.

24:07Seven.
24:08Geoff?
24:09Operate.
24:09And Laurie?
24:10I'm operating as well.
24:11Operating.
24:12All right.
24:13And Susie?
24:14Operate, yes.
24:15And repeat.
24:18All right.
24:1973 to 55.
24:21Susie, step forward.
24:23It's your origins of words, that wonderful time of the afternoon.
24:27What have you got for us today?
24:28Well, I remember as a child reading any stories from the, or set in the 18th century or the 19th century,
24:36the ladies always seemed to be swooning, especially kind of well-bred ladies.
24:40They would faint at the slightest emotional or physical shock and would all be past me the smelling salts.
24:46And I remember puzzling over why these ladies were fainting left, right and centre.
24:51And over the years, there have been several theories as to, in fact, why this happened.
24:55And the first one, unsurprisingly perhaps, was the corset fashion.
24:59The incredibly stiff, they were stiffened with whalebone, these very tight bodices that were tightened, as I say, often to extremes.
25:07And sometimes this had really quite dire physical effects on the body.
25:12So ribs were often displaced, lungs were squashed.
25:15Not everyone agreed, of course.
25:16Some people thought it was very good for moral fibre as well as for sort of stiffening the body.
25:21So there was quite a lot of controversy over this.
25:23But whatever the argument was, it's quite possible that this fashion actually led to quite a lot of fainting and low blood pressure primarily.
25:33But there was another potential contributor as well.
25:35And we know that facial makeup in those days contained arsenic and other horrible poisons.
25:40And the idea that they would whiten the skin because white was seen as the epitome of beauty.
25:47The paler you were, the more beautiful and the more physically attractive.
25:51But for others, and I have to say probably particularly for the male sex, women's fainting fits were caused by only two things.
25:57And one was hysteria.
25:59And of course, as I've said before, that comes from the womb, Greek for the womb,
26:03because it was thought that somehow women's bodies were responsible for this surfeit of emotion, if you like.
26:09Hysteria is linked to hysterectomy.
26:12Or more often, they put it down to some kind of cunning play for attention so that duplicity was involved somehow.
26:19And that's why the word faint comes from the same root as to feign, to pretend.
26:25And that's also why the feints of boxing, the pretended blows or movements designed to deceive the opposition,
26:32also linked to the faint with the other spelling.
26:35They simply went in two ways to mean the different things.
26:38So if you believe that version, no smelling salts were ever needed.
26:41It was all a put-up job, and women were simply faking it.
26:45Well, well, well.
26:47I can't believe that that would happen.
26:52Torture.
26:5373 plays, 55, and it's Laurie's letters game.
26:57Laurie.

28:12I think it is without the E, actually, Geoff.
28:16Yeah, M-U-F-T-I-S is the plural of the Muslim legal experts.
28:23Yeah, there's no E-S equivalent.
28:24I'm sorry about that.
