00:35For today's talk, nagwaging best actress na Katrina Halili at Angel Guardian
00:40sa 10th World Excellence Japan Awards.
01:52ang ating tatalakay ngayong hapon kasama ang legendary basketball coach, one of the best.
01:58He's a 7-time PBA coach of the year, 11-time PBA champion,
02:02at naging head coach ng Philippine basketball team at Ateneo Blue Eagles.
02:08Nighttime mga kapuso, let's welcome Chot Reyes!
02:16Maraming salamat, Chot.
02:17Thank you, thank you, thank you for having me.
02:25How are you?
02:26I'm fine, just coming off a very brief vacation from Tokyo.
02:32The morning after the finals game 7 last week, dumipad na kagad kami ng wife ko to Tokyo.
02:39Oh, a much needed break.
02:40Yeah, recovery, recharge, relaxation.
02:43Right.
03:14reaksyon mo?
03:14Well, first of all, bago mag-upisa, I want to extend my deepest sympathies to the families, the mother, the
03:22parents of Rene and Divine.
03:25But coming back to your question, the minute, the moment I heard it, I was filled with deep sadness because
03:33I know Divine personally.
03:35We're not close but, you know, he's been here for a couple of years.
03:38Eh, ang practice ng team ko sa Moro Lorenzo Gym sa Ateneo, we're the Ateneo Blue Eagles practice as well.
03:45So, we're...
03:46So, we're kakasalubong.
03:47Almost every day.
03:48And kung di man kami nakikita sa court, nakikita naman kami sa weights room, sa gym because Divine is a
03:53very conscientious bodybuilder.
03:57Talaga nagaano siya. He really takes care of his body.
04:00And my team, I join my players in our weights program, lifting and all that.
04:06And palagi na doon si Divine.
04:07And he always has a very cheerful greeting for me.
04:10Good morning, coach.
04:11Nice guy.
04:11Palagi na yan. Good morning, coach.
04:13Good morning, coach.
04:13So, yeah.
04:14So, actually, I posted it.
04:16The first practice that we had, pagpasok ko sa gym, I posted on my Instagram story.
04:23It was a surreal feeling not to have Divine around to give that morning.
04:27At may nagsabi sa akin na parang biglang tumahimik yung gym.
04:30Correct.
04:31That's what I mean.
04:32Magtasabay kayo eh.
04:33Oo, walang ano.
04:34So, that's the first thing that I felt was really deep sadness.
04:40Oo.
04:41Based on what you know, I know these are very difficult questions to ask.
04:57But it was really part of their regular conditioning exercise.
05:02As, alam mo, sa sports, not only in basketball, beach training is very effective resistance training.
05:11Yung tumatakbo sa buhangin.
05:15As against running on regular surfaces, that really promotes stronger footwork, greater cardiovascular endurance.
05:23So, maraming gumagawa niyan.
05:25We do that several times na kami nagpabalik-balik different beaches.
05:29Our most recent was in Ilocos, Norte.
05:33We do a lot of training on sand and beach training.
05:38So, yun lang pagkaalam ko that what they were doing, their regular beach training activities.
05:44And I think some of them napunta in water which was, as pagkasabi siya, was just knee deep.
05:52But then, suddenly, these waves came crashing in.
05:56And kasabay ng waves were the rip current.
05:59Yung tinatawag na rip current.
06:00Yes.
06:01That's all I know.
06:03How far they were from the beach, sa pampang, I really have no idea.
06:07But, yun lang ang...
06:08We'll go into that.
06:09I have very detailed questions about it.
06:18Hindi lamang pagdadalamhati, but may galit.
06:22Where do you think is it coming from?
06:27I think, number one, from a lot of fake speculation came out right away.
06:34Di ba, may nagsabi, may weights, may bakal sa paa.
06:37May nagsabi...
06:38Unang lumabas yun.
06:39Which was completely...
06:41Untrue.
06:42Untrue.
06:43Na may pasapasa, dalhazing, and all that.
06:46Which is completely untrue.
06:48So, that's one.
06:49And then, it was exacerbated by the silence from our school's side.
06:55Okay.
06:55Mas lumalayon.
06:56Yes.
06:57Yan wala tayong naririnig na boses.
06:59O, parang yun yung naging...
07:00Okay.
07:00Nagkaroon tuloy ng impression na baka may tinatago.
07:04Which I don't think...
07:16Somebody described it as a military-style boot camp.
07:19Okay?
07:20O team building.
07:21Kanina you started to talk about it.
07:23Yung pagtakbo sa sand.
07:25Kailangan ba talaga ito?
07:26Ginagawa ba talaga ito?
07:27So, yes.
07:29These are...
07:30There are...
07:31In the entire training pedagogy, if you want to call it, there is times where you have to go to
07:39really hard training.
07:41And then, there's a cycle where you have to rest a little bit in preparation for the actual tournament.
07:46Uh-huh.
07:47So, there are different means.
07:50Water training is not new.
07:54I remember my first head coaching job in the PBA was with Pure Foods Corporation in 1993.
08:00We were already doing a lot of pool work.
08:02You do this?
08:03Yes.
08:04Ah, okay.
08:04We were doing it in Intercon, in different pools.
08:08There were times, nagputapak may sa swimming pool sa club Filipino.
08:11My recent team sa SEA Games in Cambodia, we had a day that we were off.
08:17We sent all the players and I even posted it on social media.
08:21The players were in the pool.
08:23So, we do...
08:24The water training is part of physical fitness and therapy.
08:30If you're coming off an injury, kesa sa tumakbo ka on a hard surface, it jars your joints.
08:38So, maraming tumatakbo sa water.
08:41Yeah, yung swimming pool nakikita natin yan, kahit tennis players po.
08:44I would see them train dahil pampalakas yata ng tuhod.
08:50Pero yung dagat, ginagawa ba talaga yun?
08:52Have you done that?
08:54Sa akin, we've done a lot of activities in beach areas.
08:58But sa akin, my teams, we just limit them to running sa buhangin.
09:05Not really going into the water.
09:07There was times when I was a coach of Coca-Cola.
09:11We went to Boracay and we did cliff diving.
09:15We did cliff diving with the players and even my daughter was with us.
09:19So, maraming kaming ginagawa.
09:24The training for basketball is...
09:27That's called cross-training.
09:29So, it's not only basketball because you're able to develop different muscles plus it breaks the monotony.
09:35And I'm sure you know monotony is one of the biggest killers of motivation, right?
09:39So, you want to vary your program and vary your methodologies.
09:44So, my teams, nag-whitewater rafting na kami sa Cagayan de Oro.
09:49Nag-camping na kami overnight in a desert in Dubai.
09:52I brought my... in Qatar.
09:54I brought my teams for a week in an isolated, deserted castle in Italy.
09:59So, maraming kaming ibang ginagawa.
10:01Ah, okay.
10:01Hindi lang within the basketball court because that's...
10:04In the process, you build the camaraderie, the team building.
10:09Okay.
10:10You build synergy.
10:11Uh-oh.
10:11So, it's always a combination of doing those activities.
10:14We call that you create shared memories.
10:17That's how teams are built, eh.
10:25Okay.
10:25But that is my...
10:26I'm a licensed and professional team development, team builder.
10:30Okay.
10:30So, there are different methodologies where you do outdoor stuff.
10:35And always combined with indoor work, which are the difficult conversations,
10:42which are the, you know, a lot of the other activities that do not require you to go outdoors.
10:48Okay.
10:49So, kasi marami ang usap-usapan noon.
10:51Katulad, halimbawa, na narinig natin yung...
10:54I saw that interview with the mother of Rene.
11:06Now, you're explaining it very clearly.
11:08Wala namang kinalaman.
11:09Hindi naman swimmer ang anak ko.
11:11Basketball player ito.
11:12So, what you're trying to say, Chot, is,
11:14these are ancillary activities to support the training of the boys.
11:20And they were not swimming or, you know, panglangoy.
11:24Kasi sinasami, hindi naman sila swimmer.
11:26But it was just that they were, the objective was to put them in knee-deep water
11:32to provide more resistance to the activity.
11:35Kampalakas, ita nga nga.
11:37Yeah, whatever, the calisthenics or the activity that they were doing.
11:40Pero to your knowledge, kasi marami kaming na, sabi mo nga,
11:42ang dami ng kwentong lumabas.
11:43Kaya there was so much room for speculation.
11:46Right.
11:46Di ba?
11:47Yung iba daw ay hanggang tuhod.
11:49Yung iba naman ay hanggang bewang.
11:51Did you hear that version of the story?
11:53Yes, I heard that.
11:54And I really don't know what's true.
11:56So, that's why I hesitate to comment because I wasn't there.
11:59And I think, you know.
12:01Pero, Chot, pag team building, ano yan?
12:04May programa?
12:05May sinusunod na programa?
12:06Yes, meron.
12:07Ah, okay.
12:08So, like I said, it's, well, when we go into our training camps,
12:13alam na ng players ko yun.
12:14We already tell them, be ready for three to four times a day sessions.
12:19Kasi when you go on regular basketball practices,
12:22ang two-hour practice, that's it.
12:23But when you're in a training camp,
12:26you eat, sleep, and play basketball.
12:30Pero may safety precautions.
12:32Yes.
12:32Meron ito.
12:33Kasi ang nangyari noon ay,
12:37di ba, ang unang paglabas ang balita,
12:39walang signages, nadelikado yung lugar,
12:42walang lifeguards.
12:44So, naka-apekto yan doon sa opinion
12:48nung nakakarinig ng balita.
12:50Correct.
12:50Agree.
12:52I think,
12:53ano dah, they're very familiar with each other
12:55because, as you know,
12:56that wasn't their first time there.
12:57Kilala na naman sila kasi doon.
12:59Yeah, they've done that in the past years.
13:01Yes, past years.
13:02Oo.
13:03Okay.
13:04Si Coach Tab Baldwin,
13:08in I think one of the interviews,
13:09one of the interviews that he gave sometime 2016, 2017,
13:13sinabi na that he was inspired by a football coach,
13:17an American coach,
13:18whose name is Paul Bear Bryant.
13:20Na ang goal ay to quote is,
13:23to break the men.
13:25End of quote.
13:26Anong ibig sabihin nun?
13:29When you recruit players,
13:32they're of different backgrounds,
13:34different beliefs,
13:35different cultures.
13:36And you want them to imbibe your own culture.
13:42So, that's what Paul Bear Bryant,
13:45the legendary football coach of Alabama,
13:47was referring to.
13:49And it's effective to a degree,
13:55but now there are other means and methodologies
13:59to do that already.
14:01Pero that's exactly what that meant.
14:04Nung nag-coach ka sa Ateneo,
14:06in the 90s.
14:08Tama.
14:09Did you do this?
14:11Yes.
14:11Yung sand...
14:12Yeah, we do...
14:14What's it called?
14:14Sand running or something?
14:16It's just a...
14:17Well, for us,
14:18we just call that beach work.
14:19It's resistance training.
14:20Beach work.
14:20Yeah, it's resistance training.
14:24Kasi it's two birds with one.
14:27We promote the better cardiovascular conditioning
14:31of the players.
14:32Plus, we give them time also to be together
14:34for R&R,
14:35just to...
14:36During the break time,
14:38like you say,
14:39we misschedule talaga yun eh.
14:40But there are blocks where it's break time.
14:43So, they can just swim or...
14:45Laugh and have fun with each other.
14:47Just to be together.
14:48Correct.
14:48And I'm a big believer in that.
14:51So, that's all part of it.
14:53So, yeah, my teams in 90, 91...
14:55I coached the Ateneo College team
14:57for three years.
14:581990, 91, 91.
15:00Those were the down years
15:02where we were not doing very well.
15:06But we had a lot of team building activities.
15:13But you did beach work during that time.
15:15Yeah, we did the resistance training.
15:17Okay, so hindi bago ito.
15:19Kasi, babalikan ko lang yung sarabi natin kanina.
15:21Because of the absence nga of the voice
15:24that we were waiting for.
15:25I mean, whatever that was.
15:27So, ang daming speculations.
15:28And crazy speculations.
15:30Naroon na yung mayamang kasi,
15:33kaya hindi na aksidente, mahirap.
15:36Na-dichotomize yun.
15:39Meron ding kayo ang guilty,
15:42kayo ang etc.
15:45How were you reacting to this?
15:47I commiserate with the players
15:50who are receiving death threats.
15:51I mean...
15:52And the bashing?
15:53What's it for?
15:54The massive bashing.
15:55I should know, boy.
15:56Alam mo naman lang,
15:56I received death threats
15:58when I was a kid.
15:59I received death threats.
16:01It's not fun.
16:02It's not good to have.
16:03But, like I said,
16:07I'm all for finding truth,
16:09seeking justice,
16:10but not at the expense naman.
16:12Yeah.
16:12And it went overboard.
16:13Yung kayo ang naglunod,
16:15kayo ang guilty.
16:17Kailangan lang sabihin natin
16:18na medyo that went overboard.
16:23Chot,
16:24sa palagay mo,
16:26ano ang pagkukulang
16:28at ano ang tamang ginawa
16:30ng Ateneo de Manila University?
16:33Ang kasagutan,
16:34sa pagbabalik po
16:35ng Fast Talk with Boy Abunda.
16:43Kami nagbabalik po dito
16:45sa Fast Talk with Boy Abunda.
16:46Kasama po natin,
16:47Chot Reyes.
16:48Chot,
16:49sa palagay mo,
16:51ano ang pagkukulang
16:52at ano ang tama na ginawa
16:54ng Ateneo de Manila University?
16:56Mahirap sa akin.
16:57And it's hard for me
16:58to speak on pagkukulang
17:01because I don't know.
17:02Of course,
17:02they have their own methodologies.
17:04But I think
17:05what they should have done
17:06was to immediately
17:09show a face right away.
17:11I think in these,
17:11I'm sure you know
17:12this crisis management,
17:14being a crisis management expert.
17:16In these situations,
17:19what the public
17:20or what the aggrieved party needs
17:21is a face,
17:22a human face right away.
17:24Whether that's whoever,
17:25the president or the coach,
17:27it doesn't matter
17:28but show a human face
17:30right away.
17:31I think that
17:32that should have been done
17:33right away.
17:35Ang pinakagusto ko naman,
17:36may mga kaibigan tayo
17:38sa Ateneo,
17:38mga alumni,
17:39na habang nangyayari ito,
17:41on their own,
17:42you know,
17:42I got a call,
17:43for example,
17:44from someone saying,
17:45I know it's noisy,
17:48pero tulong tayo.
17:49Yung diretso,
17:50you know,
17:51at diyan naman na kumahanga
17:52sa not because we come
17:53from the school,
17:54but that community spirit,
17:57meron na,
17:57how do we reach actually
17:59to the family?
18:00Sabi ko,
18:01maganda naman.
18:01I don't know what happened,
18:02but I got that.
18:05Justicia ang hinihingi
18:06ng sambayanan,
18:07ng maraming maraming tao.
18:10Bilang coach at Atenista,
18:11ano ang panawagan mo,
18:13Chod?
18:15Ang panawagan ko is for healing,
18:17more than anything else.
18:19Ang panawagan ko is to stop
18:21all the baseless speculations.
18:24Some people are just speculating,
18:27perhaps out of ignorance,
18:29not knowing really
18:30what the whole picture is.
18:31But, to be very honest,
18:33I think some people are viciously
18:37spreading falsehoods.
18:38So, yun ang panawagan ko.
18:40I mean,
18:41two families were aggrieved.
18:43We've lost two members
18:44of our community.
18:46So, let's,
18:48let's find ways to heal.
18:52Not only for the families,
18:53but for the families.
18:55Sa pagkakakilala mo
18:57kay coach Tab Baldwin,
19:00what is he like?
19:02Tab Baldwin is a very good coach.
19:04I got him as my assistant
19:06in 2013
19:07when we got that historic win
19:10in the FIBA Asia Championships
19:13that got us our first
19:14World Cup
19:16participation.
19:19And I got him as my assistant
19:20because he's technically
19:21a very good coach.
19:23he has a very clear concepts
19:27on defense and offense.
19:28and secondly,
19:29he's a very good teacher.
19:30He can teach
19:32the game
19:33very well.
19:34Yeah,
19:34and you followed the GILAS,
19:35right?
19:36Yes.
19:36And then,
19:37after that,
19:38when I stepped down,
19:39he took over.
19:40Uh-huh.
19:40and then,
19:41uh,
19:43I think there were some issues
19:44with,
19:44with the program
19:45that he was running,
19:46so they asked me,
19:47uh,
19:48uh,
19:49to take his place
19:50again.
19:51And,
19:51and since then,
19:52we've,
19:52we've remained,
19:53uh,
19:53to be,
19:55to have close contact.
19:56Like I said,
19:57we see each other often
19:58because magkasunod
19:59halos ang practice
20:00namin sa Ateneo.
20:02Oo.
20:03So,
20:03marami rin ang nakakapansin
20:05na yung collegiate basketball,
20:09ang dami ng mga imports.
20:10Parang,
20:11uh,
20:12may nagsabi nga sa akin,
20:13may mga teams na raw
20:14na halos kalahate
20:15ay imports na,
20:16na napaka-commercialized na.
20:18Is this good or bad?
20:19Well,
20:21um,
20:21I think the import situation is,
20:23first of all,
20:24we have to define that,
20:26uh,
20:27distinguish between
20:28imports
20:28and fill arms.
20:30Kasi yung fill arms,
20:31I don't think we can deprive them.
20:32Kasi kung talagang
20:33may lahing Pilipino sila,
20:35pero yung father nila
20:36or mother nila
20:37is American
20:39or sa ibang nationality,
20:40they still have
20:41Filipino blood there.
20:42They have all the right
20:43to be in,
20:43in,
20:44in a team.
20:45Uh,
20:45yung imports,
20:46uh,
20:47I think,
20:48mahirap pigilan
20:49because kung talagang
20:50tagaibang bansa
20:51at gustong mag-aral
20:52to genuinely
20:54have an education,
20:56uh,
20:56to be a student-athlete,
20:57how can you stop that,
20:59di ba?
20:59Pero,
21:00ang hirap i-sabihin na,
21:02hindi,
21:02hindi ka talaga,
21:03gusto mo lang maglaro.
21:04Hindi,
21:05gusto mo talaga mag-app.
21:06It's hard to make that decision.
21:08mahirap pigilin.
21:09Mahaba pa saan
21:10natin yung kwentuhan,
21:10so,
21:11pero wala na tayong oras.
21:12But,
21:12mula sa aming,
21:13uh,
21:14mga puso,
21:14maraming maraming salamat
21:15sa panahon ito.
21:17My pleasure.
21:18Um,
21:18thank you for all the good
21:19that you do for this country
21:21by doing the best
21:22of, uh,
21:23what you can
21:24in your field.
21:25Really appreciate it, boy.
21:27Salamat.
21:27Maraming maraming salamat.
