02:45early morning track reparation a record crowd of 31 000 and a professionally groomed racetrack
02:52set and ready to go for the 1989 formula one world championship of snowmobiling here is the field
03:01jacques villeneuve on sled number 96 from st cuthbert quebec gary bass air on sled 15 from honey
03:06harbor ontario his brother right alongside bruce bass air on sled number one on sled four from eagle
03:12river wisconsin chuck decker greg goodwin on sled three from zion illinois and right next door his
03:18brother jeff goodwin on sled number four dave ryman schneider on sled 26 from pontiac michigan
03:23on number three is alan decker from eagle river don lily is aboard sled number 33 followed by mark
03:30perks on sled 23 from union lake michigan and dave wall number 74 also from union lake
03:38they're off and the quest for the world snowmobiling championship in formula one is underway
03:47they get around the first turn cleanly and head down the back stretch greg goodwin takes the early
03:52lead as they approach turns three and four and there is a fierce battle throughout the pack as they all
03:57jockey for a good opening position greg goodwin in sled three completes the first lap and although we know
04:03they all wanted the first position i would have put money that jacques villeneuve in sled number 96 would
04:08be more aggressive from the very start but john he was not well phil that's quite a strategy on a
04:13part of jacques villeneuve indeed if he has had any i don't believe it's of his choosing because you
04:18know he and the vassar brothers they want that early lead but greg goodwin jumped off the starting line
04:24and right now these races are positioning themselves to take the first position but we're in the early
04:28stages of this race and it's anybody's race just yet greg goodwin is holding on but he's taking turns a
04:34little high as bruce vassar is cutting below him and gaining this is bruce's first world championship
04:40and you can be sure that he is going for count dave wall out oh not at all i think
04:45any other racer
04:46would have been completely out of it but dave's got the resiliency he's come back oh boy look at this
04:51vassar and goodwin going at it neck and neck this is great racing now but great goodwin's still holding
04:56on tough he's got it in control he's taking those turns a whole lot better now but vassar is really
05:02right back on him he's not giving up an inch bruce bass air maneuvered a beautiful turn and increased
05:08his speed and is now giving goodwin a real challenge for the lead he's going high on the turn cuts
05:13down
05:13in front of goodwin and now takes the lead it's his first world championship and you can just imagine
05:19what is going through his mind right now yes he's got it raising his arm in victory taking the checkered
05:26flag and his first world championship title
05:39a proud moment savored by the victor bruce vassar the remarkable dave wall in second and jacques
05:46villanue in third place

06:44you're
06:44you're
06:47you're
07:01you're
07:18we are going to be seeing some of the top pros in the country skating today on vertical half
07:23pipe ramps actually two ramps back to back guaranteeing some spectacular action the skaters
07:28are going to be judged on maneuvers that they pull off as they reach the top of the ramp as
07:33you see they go up in the air and then they usually set up for some sort of maneuver come
07:37down
07:37set up to go on the other side and in this case they are going to be transitioning occasionally
07:41from the big ramp to the small ramp we're getting ready with the first run of reese simpson reese
07:46simpson dropping in now he's from encinitas california he's 22 years old and he is getting
07:52off to a smooth start transitioning back and forth up to the top of the ramp setting up back down
07:59and ready to do it again as he comes to the other side you see him using the lip of
08:04the ramp
08:05there's a nice invert beautiful upside down maneuvers they plant their hands on the lip there
08:11and get the board up over their head sometimes they hang on to the board and sometimes they don't
08:16reese is a third year pro he's been skating for 12 years very nice tail slide there over the spine
08:23it's a rock and roll transitioning to the other ramp slides across that coping there and again
08:30transitioning to the big one and he loses it let's look at that there you see as he came over
08:35the spine
08:36the board just kind of slipped they're having some problems with it i think that the skater who uses
08:40that transition a little bit more is going to get some additional points for it that's probably going
08:45to help their pride sergey ventura with a nice run finally goes down let's look at one of these
08:50maneuvers you see these guys get very high up in the air they are able to twist the board around
08:56they
08:56do incredible things now we're watching john sunner john 18 years old from vista california and he's
09:02going to have to beat sergey's score nice that was called a mick twist that's a 540 degree rotation
09:08right there john pulled it off very nicely john has been skating now for five years and this is his
09:14first pro contest and john is doing a very nice job see him just sliding along the lip of the
09:21ramp
09:21there now he's up on the spine reverses himself and comes down slides along the lift trying to string
09:27these maneuvers together and make them as smooth as possible smith grind there and an invert
09:34and another one john has not made use of the mini ramp yet as i mentioned earlier these guys are
09:40not
09:40really familiar with a ramp built just like this one is so consequently they tend to spend most of
09:46their time on the bigger vertical ramp that's where you're going to see the big tricks nice that was
09:51called the burial switching the board flipping the board around under his feet as he goes up in the
09:55air and john is going to call it quits that was a very nice run by john sonner let's look
10:00at that
10:01mctwist again 540 degrees one and a half with 88.5 on that last run and now here comes danny
10:07way danny
10:08way starting right off with a mctwist himself in a one-footed air he is really hot this kid is
10:1315
10:14years old he's the youngest pro on the tour he took a real bad spill this morning there was a
10:19burial you
10:20saw him shifting the board and a nut
