Charli XCX on writing about death in her songwriting and losing a close friend: "I lost someone who completely changed my life, and there are a lot of feelings to work through with that, especially because they were so attached to my creative life in a really positive way, but also sometimes in a difficult way. Being able to express those feelings through my work has been really cathartic for me."

00:00Do you find that in your songwriting, does death ever come up for you?
00:04Like, is that something that you think about?
00:05Yes.
00:07Having had a friend and, like, close collaborator pass away.
00:13Mm-hmm.
00:15Yes.
00:16I mean, I have written songs about grief and sort of, like, regret around, you know,
00:29things I could have, like, said or done in that specific relationship.
00:34But then I've also written, you know, really positive songs about, like, the memories I have of that person.
00:43Yeah.
00:46So, yeah, I mean, like, grief is a funny thing, I think, for anyone who goes through it, right?
00:51It's, like, so sort of specific to each person.
00:56I lost someone who was, like, I don't know, like, completely changed my life.
01:05And so there's a lot of, like, feelings to work through with that, especially because they were so attached to
01:15my creative life and my creative self.
01:18In a really positive way, but also sometimes, you know, in, like, a difficult way.
01:25Being able to sort of express those feelings through my work has been really cathartic for me.
