00:00Northern Ghana was historically a center for the trade of human lives.
00:05Captives from northern communities like Nook, now part of Togo, were taken to slave markets.
00:11Africans abducted from areas around Nook were enslaved after capture and sold into the slave market in Salaga.
00:18For Shamim from Trinidad, this reunion is deeply emotional.
00:22I'm a witness of what occurred. I accept, I understand, and I'm not going to be silent.
00:31I'm here, and I'm here for a reason.
00:34I'm here to let my ancestors know, even in the spirit realm, that I do appreciate.
00:43And they're not alone.
00:45And the battle is not won, but the fight has begun, and that the world knows that we are a people.
00:59Chains, shackles, and Danish firearms in a small museum near Salaga show the history of slavery along with historic slave wells.
01:08So if you are wanting slaves or wanting a slave to buy, and of course a stronger slave to buy, you need to come to Salaga.
01:18If you closely observe the tattoos or the marks, you see that they're coming from different areas.
01:29Wells used to cleanse slaves at the Salaga slave market,
01:33Yet decades later, the descendants of slaves are making their way back home.
01:39My daughter actually did a DNA analysis, and it proved that we were 78% African.
01:53It even went on to break down the regions that we were from.
02:00And in 2019, I had the opportunity to come to Ghana, and I felt like this was home.
02:08This was where I came from.
02:11This was my beginning.
02:13Slavery was only abolished here in the late 19th century following the invasion of the British colonialists.
02:19So, I've said something.
