00:05Let me mentionne Night's Dreaming, of course,
00:08which is one of the great songs by R.M., the one you, Mike, wrote,
00:11which is blending between rock and chamber music you've ever done.
00:14So I was just going to ask you what you thought when you wrote that piano part
00:19and if you already thought of the orchestral arrangement and the string arrangement.
00:26I would like to claim that kind of foresight.
00:29Absolutely. No, I was just, you know, as you notice in the piece,
00:34it's just the same thing going round and round and round.
00:37And so I used to play it on the piano because I just enjoyed listening to it.
00:41I'd never expected R.M. to do anything with it.
00:44And Michael heard me playing it one day and he said, keep playing that.
00:47So he sat there and started coming up with lyrics and, you know,
00:54he brought it back into rehearsal and we said, oh, my God, it's an actual song.
00:57And so once we realized that we had something good there,
01:01when we decided to record it, we decided strings would be good.
01:04We were using the Atlanta Symphony a good bit on that record on Automatic for the People.
01:12And so we had the symphony in there.
01:14We said, well, let's where should we use them?
01:15Let's use them here.
01:16So I sort of wrote the part and then Mark Bingham helped.
01:23Let's see.
01:24No, it was me and John Paul Jones who arranged it.
01:29And then it's, you know, it is a beautiful combination of the classical and a little bit of rock and
01:36roll.
01:36Is that the song you're your song you're most proud of or the one you wrote and the one you
01:42played?
01:43I don't really necessarily feel that way because I didn't write it by myself.
01:48You know, I wrote the piano parts, but but Michael wrote the lyrics and the melody.
01:52And as with every R.E.M. song, it was all a product of the three or four of us
01:57at the time.
01:58So I feel pride of ownership in being a part of R.E.M., not necessarily for like, oh, I
02:04wrote that song because I had helped.
