00:10jay giles here on a thursday morning in the motor city peter wolf was uh i believe at the royal
00:19music theater a few months ago here's uh one of the great great tunes from jay giles love stinks
00:29i hit the post yeah
00:37did you have any uh djing in your back uh radio days yeah school radio college radio okay all right
00:45what what style of uh of music was it it was aor album what did they always say for album
00:52album
00:52oriented rock i believe or aor aor radio whatever all right it was you know love stinks
01:03anyway yes and you you know you practice a little bit you get it up to the right till the
01:09yeah you
01:09spin it yeah make sure you get the needle right the old turntable yes uh-huh it was cool i
01:15love doing
01:15that you could have been the original scratcher no no i tried that part i tried it once you tried
01:25you kind of do it when you actually not for those not intentionally right yeah yeah exactly all right
01:32enough of that crap um the world cup is where jim costa went to toronto to see uh ghana defeat
01:39panama one nothing if you've been paying attention i know a lot of people who don't like soccer don't
01:45like the world cup oh it's so low scoring yada yada yada it which is true and that that doesn't
01:51bother me as long as there are chances what bothers me is when there's games where there's no chances
01:55but if you've been watching a little bit the scoring has been it seems more this year than in the
02:02past
02:02uh england won there were six goals in their win over croatia four to two u.s scored four u
02:07.s scored
02:08four uh the what was it was it brazil whoever played curacao won seven to one that was germany
02:15germany um so i you know colombia yesterday won three to one so there's a little bit more scoring
02:20and i guess soccer purists don't love it as much as americans do because we don't understand a lot of
02:29the midfield play we don't get as excited over a lot of the intricacies of the game yes exactly we
02:36like to see scoring scoring chances and like to see goals absolutely right um now there are reasons
02:43some say for the increase in scoring now one of those is like they can't call it a timeout they
02:52have to call it a hydration break right well greg you you were talking about this and it's the
02:58hydration break there's also something quarters well no it's just a quarter model that it's a
03:03hydration break in the middle of each half oh so it breaks it up which essentially makes it
03:08quarters right it's a smaller break in the middle of a half huh well now we got quarters i went
03:13to
03:13math class um not periods correct so this is just more of a theory that i'm working with
03:20is you know i see these these scores in the world cup and i'm used to seeing like a hey
03:25a lot of one
03:26nothing a lot of one one if we're getting really frisky uh you know lots of like two and under
03:31goals
03:31and i'm stony you mentioned the scores and i'm noticing that a lot so i'm like huh let's put
03:38this hypothesis to the test so it's a great check-in point exactly today because every team in the world
03:44cup has played one game correct 24 games played there's been 75 goals total in the 24 games played
03:52through the first game in the group stage all right so just over three goals a game that's good math
03:58it is 3.125 goals per game now that would be the highest average if this were to continue
04:06since 1958 so wow since i was born it does appear that there are changes that are happening that are
04:17leading to this it's look it's two things it's it's a long time like a long since right i mean
04:23we're
04:23talking stony you mentioned decades and decades here right yeah probably decades decades
04:28decades and there's a clear demarcation line of three goals per game nice round number right
04:38so i let me counter that and i just thought about this in regards to the amount of teams
04:44that are in the world cup now when it was held four years ago how many teams were in the
04:49world cup
04:49there were 32 all right now there's 48 there's 48 that is new this year as well which is new
04:55and i'm curious as to is it the extra rest making them more or or at least
05:04playing at a higher level for longer periods of time creating these more goals or is it teams that
05:10are playing lesser equivalents separation of talent well that's the that's what happened in the germany
05:15game obviously curacao most people said it's a joke that they even made it but that's what happens
05:20when you expand from 32 to 48 i also think from watching and like i said you two four eight
05:26five
05:27three nine 97 97 uh your soccer purists would probably shoot this down but it looks to me like
05:33these teams their attacks are more i don't know north american so to speak for a lack of a better
05:42term
05:42they're more aggressive offensively it seems in the games that i've watched and they usually are that
05:46has probably something to do with it i don't think the the hydration break has anything to do with it
05:52in fact the hydration break is not even for the health of these guys can get it's for commercials
05:57it's for commercial it's for they finally designed to have a commercial but they do they're not running
06:00around they get a chance to get a breather yes and so while it may not be designed for the
06:07players
06:08benefit the players are benefiting from it yeah i guess well yeah and i believe the idea of
06:16let's just have it everywhere is there is a mandate of if it's this hot we gotta have a hydration
06:21break
06:22think about as you wish but that's what the rules that have been placed and fifa said well let's not
06:27make it well if it's this let's not have this uh well well if it's hotter here and that let's
06:34just make
06:34it all across the board so they made it all across the board made it uniform and so yeah i
06:39mean if you're
06:40playing indoors in dallas yesterday yeah they're still going to have a hydration break if it's
06:4572 degrees in seattle they're still going to have a hydration break right which which i think making
06:49it uniform makes all the sense in the world yeah i agree with that uh i don't think they need
06:54it but
06:54it's all about money anyway as we've as we know from all sports it's even seeped into the oh the
06:59fifa's they're so crooked anyway i mean the fact that they had it in cotter four years ago right is
07:04that where the world cup was four years ago and they had all this uh ridiculous stuff going on
07:10there anyway two four eight five three nine is it cutter or qatar i mean i've heard of cutter too
07:15i mean
07:16cutter yeah it's more i think it's cutter two four eight five three nine 97 97 so is the hydration
07:23break
07:23if we're given the hypothesis that the hydration break has helped the sport is that one of the
07:31greatest i don't know innovations in sports and if not you know what are your favorite innovations
07:37in sports innovations or maybe more specifically let's start with rule changes okay what rule
07:42changes because this is a rule change they get a you know predetermined break and it may be creating
07:50more offense who knows why there's more offense it could be competition level and the separation of
07:55the level of talent it could be the uh the hydration break making them a little bit fresher at the
08:01end of games um to me and i know that there are some people that don't like it but i
08:07think for
08:07the game of baseball the pitch clock absolutely has been a godsend yes i wish they had a pitch
08:15clock in travel baseball they don't they don't really need it in travel softball it's a quicker game
08:21right uh but yeah the amount of times where you know hey the batter is out and and these kids
08:28all
08:29hey they've got to adjust their their batting gloves they've got to address the uh you know
08:33the the shin guard that they have on or their elbows like they and then when they get to first
08:38base like they got to take off their you know their batting gloves and put on their sliding glove
08:42like it just takes so long so the pitch clock in major league baseball to me may be the greatest
08:48rule change that we've seen in modern history i don't want to steal a lot of thunder here but i
08:54think
08:54baseball has been kind of a 10 for 10 year recently like universal dh uh the three batter minimum i
09:03think those are all like i i used i would think that like well come on it's baseball you're
09:07restricting what they're to do what a manager's able to do is like i don't miss these things i don't
09:12miss pitchers batting right yeah and and and i was not all i was not i'm anti dh i still
09:20am i always
09:20because i grew up with i'm kind of with you as well i'm like if you're going to play baseball
09:25you
09:25got to play all aspects yeah um because we see position players pitch right anyway um one of the
09:33other great interventions which i was not on board with is the robo up and the challenge system oh yeah
09:41the abs thing is great the abs has has really been and good because they don't overdo it if you
09:48lose
09:48your challenges in the first inning you lose them throughout the course of the game the question
09:53i heard um dan dickerson i think was bobby scales talking about this why don't we have the hawkeye
10:02for if a ball is fair or foul you're right because i think it was kevin mcgonigal was on first
10:08base i
10:09forget who was the batter but there was one might even have been yesterday that they were talking
10:13about this right down the line and it hit as they were saying just outside aj hitch challenged it
10:21we have it in tennis we have it in football why don't we have hawkeye in baseball to tell whether
10:28a ball is fair or foul or if it hits the line or if it's just out it's a great
10:32point 248-539-9797
10:34uh one of the best uh rule changes slash in it you know innovations in sports we're not talking
10:41about how the game's televised or anything like that just actually on the field on the you know
10:46court products so don't call up with the glow puck exactly so here's one that i don't know what
10:52greg would think about this one but i think this is one of the most underrated rule changes
10:59uh that the nba put in it used to be if you missed a shot and you got the offensive
11:08rebound
11:08the clocks the clock was reset to 24 but it's about 10 years ago probably they started they
11:14reset it to 14 so you have more action and 10 seconds fewer yeah and college basketball did this
11:20too yeah and so basically you're creating more shots but you're also creating different strategy like
11:27hypothetically if they had the old rule in the nba finals i think the spurs would still be playing
11:32because they could have just killed the clock they could well they were so stupid they could
11:36have anyway but yes exactly you know what i'm saying yes so i think that's an underrated one
11:41248-539-9797 all right here we go here's some text uh there's blowouts because they expanded the
11:49field the teams getting blown out shouldn't be there they're talking about the increased offense
11:53right in the world cup hydration break is about money nothing else rupert murdoch wanted the
12:00extra time for ad revenue and it made fox 250 million more that indirectly led to more goals
12:06could be okay the hydration break is about money fox made yes i agree i said the same thing we
12:13all
12:13said that same no but the the side benefit is that the players do get a break um greg did
12:19you say
12:19changes are afoot sign dukes um if you're mad about the hydration break take the quarters out of
12:28nba and the 10 timeouts both coaches can call and the two tv timeouts then as well i don't think
12:34i don't
12:34know that anybody is mad at it that's not what no i'm telling the soccer elitists elitist all the time
12:41probably that's not how soccer is played yes because it's one of their arguments oh we're the best
12:45athletes in the world because we don't stop okay so you just basically stoppage of play is built in
12:52in football right all right american football 11 players actually come off the field and get their
13:00hydration break while 11 others go on the field yes our telephone number is 248-539-9797 we'll take
13:07more of your texts and phone calls and also um we're going to get into uh tarek scoobel's not if
13:15he
13:15should go but when 97 one
