04:00Louise Severa's story began at the age of six,
04:03quand elle a first discovered her love for sailing.
04:06Years later, elle, aussi, faced doubts about continuing,
04:09mais, ultimately, chose to persevere and push forward.
06:02Sailing together for six years,
06:05the duo share a clear ambition,
06:06to stand on the podium at the 2028 Olympic Games.
06:13So I started sailing,
06:14to sail with my friends,
06:16and now I keep sailing because I love competition,
06:19and I really enjoy sailing 470 with Mathis every day.
06:23I started sailing when I was eight,
06:26and just to try it,
06:28and I love that.
06:29So I continue to be at the Olympics one day,
06:32and I hope that Hubert achieved this dream.
06:40Since we started,
06:41we had really good results,
06:44good moments,
06:44some emotional moments.
06:46I think the only really bad regatta we've done
06:49was the World Championship before the Games in 2024.
06:53It was a hard one because we were ready for it,
06:56and we didn't really find the key to do our best.
07:00So maybe it was the worst event we've done,
07:02but otherwise only good moments.
07:24As we catch up with some of the brightest talents at this 57th edition,
07:28the spotlight also turns to proven Olympic performers.
07:32Argentina's Eugenio Bosco and Matteo Madalani,
07:35silver medalists in Paris,
07:37have been immersed in sailing since childhood,
07:40and over the past nine years,
07:42have built a formidable partnership in the NACRA 17 class.
07:47I was coaching the NACRAs for Rio,
07:51the team of Santi Lange and Ceci Carranza,
07:54and it was a big learning for me that campaign,
07:58but I wanted to keep on sailing after that,
08:01so I called Eugenia and asked her if she was keen to try.
08:09Yeah, I think Matteo brought the knowledge to the boat,
08:12and I think it was the most important of our boat.
08:16Then, of course, we keep pushing every day,
08:18and every day you are learning something.
08:21What are the opportunities for you to do?
08:25There was a moment in the Tokyo campaign in which we realized that we were not going to the Games,
08:32so Santi and Ceci were still sailing,
08:35and they were doing better than us.
08:37And it was not maybe a specific result,
08:39but there was this year, 2018,
08:41in which it was clear that it was not going to be us,
08:44and all of a sudden you need to start looking into six years ahead,
08:50and it's a, let's say, difficult moment.
08:53You start looking back and see which things you could have done differently,
08:58but it was never on the table to quit, I think.
09:06I think qualifying for Paris Games,
09:10this was a very big relief.
09:13And I think at that moment we said,
09:15okay, now it's real, we are going to it.
09:28Valentin Bontus enjoyed the glory of winning gold at the 2024 Olympics,
09:33and is already setting his sights on defending his title in 2028.
09:38This season marks an important return for him,
09:40following a period sidelined by injury.
09:46So kitesurfing in general started for me in around 2001,
09:52when my dad actually managed to learn it.
09:54I was born in 2001, so from there on,
09:57I was always on the beach watching him kitesurfing,
10:00and it was kind of brought into my life very early.
10:03when the sport became Olympic in 2020, after the Games in Tokyo.
10:08I, at the same time, had an injury and therefore was looking to change my perspective on the sport
10:15a little bit, and yeah, got introduced into the racing side.
10:18And from 2021 onwards, I was, yeah, really putting all my effort into the racing of formula kites.
10:26Looking back, I think this is something I would have never imagined,
10:30because as you, as we all know, kiteboarding has not been an Olympic sport for long.
10:35And the moment it became Olympic, it was, yeah, it was an opportunity that I wanted to try and take.
10:49For sure, this in some way has changed from,
10:52you know, the surfer kind of lifestyle to racing,
10:55but I try to keep it chill and a bit more surfer lifestyle still.
11:03It's more of a trip that you have to really enjoy,
11:08because it's not going to last forever.
11:09And, you know, taking wins if you can is amazing,
11:14and if you cannot, you just have to accept it and still enjoy what you do.
11:18Because if you don't enjoy what you do, I think you're doing it wrong.
11:31After two days of calm conditions, Wednesday brought a dramatic but welcome shift.
11:37Strong easterly winds of 23 to 25 knots, gusting up to 28,
11:42transformed the Bay of Gjer into a challenging arena with choppy seas.
11:47In the 470 class, Jordi Chamar and Marta Cardona seized control,
11:52winning all three races in commanding fashion.
12:01For Britain's Elliot Hanson, the path to success has been anything but straightforward.
12:06As a training partner to Olympic stalwart Nick Thompson ahead of the Rio 2016 Games,
12:12he gained invaluable experience and determination along the way.
12:17He was lucky enough to go on holiday with them in north of Wales, in a place called Anglesey.
12:27And I'd go with my brothers and my cousins, initially just for fun.
12:31And then I became a lake sailor back at home in Cheshire,
12:34and from there progressed through the RWA development systems.
12:46And then a bit of time went by and I think, you know, you kind of have to commit down
12:52the road
12:52you're on, and I've done that. And, you know, alongside my Olympic sailing now I enjoy
12:58doing quite a lot of professional sailing as well and making that side work as a future career.
13:11In my senior career, one is my final result in Tokyo, which was a really difficult time for me.
13:18It was my first Games and I was performing well in the year before.
13:23Really difficult time, especially, I think, you know, again,
13:27you're in the British team and it was a very, very, very successful team in the Tokyo Olympics.
13:32It's actually made it harder, I think, being one of the underperformers in a team that was so successful.
13:39And then the second one was obviously fast forward to the Paris selection.
13:43So, you know, Mickey, who everyone knows is a fantastic sailor, had some amazing results.
13:49And for me, I think going from the disappointment of Tokyo to then a very short cycle of just three
13:55years.
13:56And so obviously Trials is only 18 months around the corner.
13:59I think that was, again, a very difficult time in losing those trials to Mickey.
14:11Day four saw a turning point in the NACRA 17 fleet.
14:14Italy's dominant Olympic champions Ruggero Tita and Cattarino Banti suffered a setback,
14:20when a broken bow spread in race two cost them crucial points, reopening the competition.
14:26Yet even amid adversity, the fleet continued to showcase some of the sport's most remarkable talent.
14:39The Americans Ian McDermott and Nevin Snow of the 49er class have built a strong team in recent years,
14:45and consistency has been the key to their success.
14:50I think, yeah, for sure, the thing that brought me into sailing was my family.
14:55Both my parents are sailboat racers and sailing lovers.
15:01And in a way, that's sort of what keeps me going.
15:03You know, my family loves to talk about my sailing.
15:06They support me in so many ways.
15:12My full family didn't race sailboats, but if they weren't racing sailboats,
15:17they were racing powerboats or something like that.
15:19And I was lucky enough that my dad raced boats.
15:21And so I, you know, before I can even remember, I was, you know, crawling around on Amalgus 24 or
15:26whatever.
15:28And yeah, you know, at the end of the day, I also really love the connection with the teammate.
15:36Well, we were competitors against each other for many years, much longer than we've been teammates.
15:41We formed our team at the beginning of last year, really.
15:46Well, in the just before Christmas of 2024, we messaged each other a little bit that summer.
15:53And yeah, it was it was like going on a first date, just like seeing, hey, are you interested?
15:59And real buttoned up.
16:01It's as simple as that.
16:02We sailed a bit.
16:03We're still pretty new, you know, just feeling it out and forming our big projects.
16:08Yeah, very new.
16:09I would say that I was surprised how motivating it was to see another team win a medal.
16:16And not a not like an angry motivation, like, ah, you know, I got to go get one.
16:20But it was really cool to sort of help bring it back into perspective.
16:27Probably just getting to know each other more as people when we were our competitors against each other.
16:32We had a lot of respect for each other, but we didn't know much about each other either.
16:35We ran kind of separate programs, basically.
16:47When she began her journey into the exciting world of sailing at the age of eight,
16:52Marta Maggetti could have hardly imagined that in 2024 she would go on to win Olympic gold in Paris.
17:02I started believing the possibility of my dreams after the COVID.
17:09So we we postponed about one year the Olympics and I had the opportunity to training more
17:18and take the confidence with myself and the gear.
17:23So I was feeling super ready about the Olympics.
17:27It was not easy because after the winning the World Championship in Brest,
17:33I had a like a blackout the year later.
17:37So I came in Paris, I think like an outsider.
17:53By day five, the intensity had reached its peak.
17:56The medal series finals for IQ foil and formula kite unfolded in eight to ten knots of breeze.
18:02In the women's formula kite, local favorite Lorion Nolo capped a dominant week with another victory
18:08after Parma. Her second title in here, following her 2023 triumph.
18:14I'm so happy. Man, I won for the French in France. It's wonderful. It's so good.
18:22After Parma, after the Olympic week, I feel super ready now for the World Championship coming soon.
18:30In the men's fleet, 19-year-old Singaporean Max Meider claimed the win ahead of Italy's Riccardo Pianossi,
18:37continuing his remarkable run with back-to-back victories in this season's sailing Grand Slams.
19:00The I.Q. foil finals delivered equal drama. Italy's Olympic champion Marta Maggetti secured victory,
19:08after overcoming Israel's Tamar Steinberg, who had been chasing a third consecutive title in Hien
19:15in Hien.
19:16I'm super happy that I'm still here competing on the RSAX. It's a really good spot for sailing, for racing.
19:25Yes, I'm happy. I'm looking forward to the European.
19:33In the men's event, Australia's Gray Morris surged to victory, leaving behind defending champion Kun Bi of China.
19:46Yeah, it was an awesome day today. The win filled in quite nicely. In my first attempt at the finals,
19:52I was over along with Kun Bi, and so we had to start five seconds late. I tried my best
19:58to catch up,
19:59but couldn't quite make it, so got a bit of rest. And then for the second attempt, Nicolo Renner and
20:04I kind
20:05had a battle for the first place, and I just managed to take it away. But overall, super fun racing,
20:12super tight, and yeah, kind of perfect training and perfect lead up for Europeans in a couple weeks.
20:22The final day of the 57th French Olympic week saw Italy shine once more, adding two further medals
20:29under perfect conditions, with steady westerly winds of 15 to 18 knots across the bay.
20:36In the 470 mixed class, Parma winners Jordi Chamar and Marta Cardona maintained their dominance,
20:43holding their nerve in the final to secure gold.
20:47Well, it was a great week, super good conditions, windy sun, perfect, perfect gears, and obviously very
20:55happy to take the win in such an important event. And yeah, we're very happy now and looking forward to
21:01the next of the season.
21:08In the NACRA 17, Italy's Gianluigi Ugolini and Maria Giubile produced a decisive performance,
21:15overturning the standings to move ahead of Argentina's Matteo Madalani and Eugenia Bosco and claim victory.
21:28We managed to do a nice final day here in here. Hard to believe. We chased a lot for a
21:38win and finally
21:40we get it here in here after a long period of training and we are happy for this, really happy.
21:52A dramatic turnaround also unfolded in the Ilka 6, where Charlotte Rose edged past overnight leader
21:59Eve McMahon of Ireland to take gold.
22:07Honestly, Hier's is one of my favorite venues. Last year I almost won this event, but ended up fourth.
22:14The year before that I wore the yellow penny. So, yeah, Hier's is my favorite spot and
22:20to come away with gold means a lot.
22:32In the Ilka 7, Australia's double Olympic champion Matt Weirn continued his impressive return to
22:38competition. Following his win in Parma, the first sailing Grand Slam of the 2026 season,
22:44he secured another victory in Hier, finishing ahead of Britain's Michael Beckett and Elliot Hansen.
22:53It's obviously a sort of a dream start to my campaign, really. Back-to-back wins in Parma and
22:58now here in Hier's at the sailing Grand Slam. So, yeah, it's a good way to start the season,
23:02I guess. Yeah, obviously awesome weather. Yeah, a bit of a range of everything,
23:06with some light air to start the regatta and then some windier stuff in the middle and then a
23:09moderate day yesterday. So, yeah, can't ask for much more.
23:15Italy's Sofia Gianciulia and Giulia Cio dominated the finals to take gold in the
23:2049er FX. After struggling in the mid-week chop, they thrived in flatter conditions, showcasing
23:27exceptional speed and control. We are just, we have no words to describe this feeling. This is our
23:35first little winner at the World Cup. So, yeah, three little words.
23:45In the men's 49er, China's Zai Deng Wen and Tian Liu capitalized on a consistent performance to secure
23:52gold after the opening final race.
24:21Another edition of the French Olympic Week,
24:24drew to a close and once again, it delivered. High-level competition, outstanding performances
24:30and unforgettable racing moments confirmed its place as a true highlight of the sailing Grand Slam series.
24:39From the organizing side, we had a wonderful week, five days of beautiful weather. We had a couple
24:45days of strong easterly wind, which is typical wind here, which brings
24:49big sea waves and tougher conditions. But then the three other days, we had mostly medium air. We
24:57were able to complete almost the entire racing program. For the IQ Foils, we did actually 100%
25:04of the program, which is actually quite rare. So, I'm very proud of the race committee organization on
25:11that side. And for the sailors, they had an excellent week because they had a wide variety of sailing
25:18conditions on the bay and they had a pretty close to the full program. So, the sailors were actually quite
25:25happy as well.
