00:10This is the first time that Orchid Island's traditional plank wood canoe, the Ovayan or
00:16Golden Friendship, will be used to paddle to Batanes Island. For almost 300 to 500 years,
00:23we have not used vessels to engage in exchanges with one another. So with this project, we are
00:30re-establishing the sea route between Orchid Island and Batanes, allowing our cultures and
00:36languages to continue being passed on. In terms of navigation, we now have modern support boats
00:50accompanying us on the voyage, so we don't feel concerned. In the past, however, we don't know
00:58what methods our ancestors used, perhaps looking at the stars and the moon to guide their journey
01:04and navigate.
01:14Since childhood, they have grown up listening to the elders recount stories of seafaring,
01:20and it was only when they reached a certain stage of maturity that they began to realize their dream.
01:30In doing so, they have accomplished something that the older generations had long wished to achieve,
01:36fulfilling it at this stage of their lives.
01:38Thank you very much.
