00:03Sailors put to sea taking their traditional Tatala canoe on a trip to revive old cultural
00:08connections. The vessel, called Ovayan Golden Friendship, is heading from Orchid Island to
00:14the Botanus Islands in the Philippines. The crew crossed roughly 100 nautical miles or 185 kilometers
00:22of open sea through the Bashi Channel to re-establish an old maritime route that once
00:27connected the two communities.
00:29We are in the Philippines. This country has been a thousand years, two thousand years,
00:35even since we've discovered 6,000 years. Our marine culture can't stop in this era.
00:43So we always wish to be able to connect with the same place in the Ba-dán Islands,
00:47the same place in the same place.
00:49We can connect with the same place in the same place again.
00:59Among the indigenous Da'u people, stories of ancestral voyages into marriage,
01:04migration and trade with the Evertan people of the Botanus Islands
01:07have been passed down through the generations. For them, this voyage is about more than just
01:13reaching another shore. It's about reconnecting with their relatives,
01:16history and a shared maritime culture.
01:18movement of Chinese planes and long-term life.
01:23In the era of the oldisen of Ukraine, our战士 of Bah-dán Islands
01:27were able to enter the village of Vietnam in the Spanish,
01:34and took ship in the village of Bah-dán and sent the village of Bah-dán out.
01:37So during the war, we shifted.
01:41We ended in the war.
01:41So as a leader of future living with Bah-dán Islands,
01:55years of planning and preparation have gone into the voyage,
01:59starting from strengthening the vessel to withstand the long journey.
02:17Rough seas and unpredictable weather lie ahead, as 60 crew members take turns to row.
03:07In the past, the Dao people relied on their knowledge of the stars, ocean currents,
03:14the wind and waves to navigate. However, for this voyage, the crew are getting a little
03:19modern help. And to make sure the sailors arrive at their destination safe and sound,
03:25they'll be escorted by several yachts and this hydrogen-powered vessel.
03:30The Purima P-111 plays an important support role in the voyage.
03:51This voyage marks a rare meeting of old and new, traditional seafaring knowledge supported
03:57by modern technology. But for the crew, the trip is all about bringing back their ancestral
04:02connections with their relatives across the sea.
