00:17Good evening, welcome to the highlights of this Benson Hedges World Series Cup class.
00:21It's the third last game in the preliminary series.
00:24This one between Australia and New Zealand at the SCG.
00:27And it's the same two teams who met in Adelaide last Monday.
00:32And the result there was that the New Zealanders annihilated Australia, defeating them by 206 runs.
00:39The points table as we go into this match shows that the Australians have 11 points and are already into
00:45the finals.
00:46The New Zealanders have 7, India 6 and the New Zealanders' run rate also is better than that of the
00:52Indian team.
00:53The teams for today, the Australians have left out Trimble and Ritchie from the Adelaide weekend.
01:00They've brought in Dirk Wellham as 12th man.
01:03Dean Jones comes into the side to bat we think at number 4.
01:07And the New Zealanders, well they're unchanged and why should they change after winning so well down in Adelaide?
01:12We pick up play now with the very first ball of the day after the toss had been won by
01:16Borda who decided to bat.
01:18Hadley is coming at the bowl.
01:19Boone is taking strike.
01:21Your commentators Ian Chappell and Tony Gregg.
01:26And David Boone quickly off the mark.
01:29Likes that square cut.
01:34Beautiful conditions here at the SCG.
01:37Nice and warm.
01:40Predicted to be around about 23, 24 degrees.
01:44I would think that it's probably up to that already.
01:51That's an excellent shot from David Boone.
01:57Outfield a little slow.
01:58David Boone seemed to hit that one pretty near the middle of the bat.
02:02And a good start for Australia.
02:04Six runs coming in that first over.
02:11Placement.
02:13Nicely put away.
02:18Easy three to David Boone.
02:23Two interesting changes to the Australian side here.
02:28Wellham is 12th man for this match.
02:30New South Wales captain is carting the drinks.
02:34Dean Jones comes in.
02:36Both those players, Jones and Wellham, are excellent fielders.
02:45That's cleverly placed by Marsh.
02:50That field is slow.
02:58Unusual.
02:58It's been a bit of rain up here.
03:00And that's probably the reason for it.
03:02It does look lush.
03:05But it's probably the rain they've had
03:07here in the last week or so.
03:09As we've been basking in the sun down in Adelaide stack.
03:12It's been throwing it down up here.
03:14Yes, and it's also a warm day in Melbourne too, Richie.
03:17And obviously down there, the cricket not being played.
03:19But last Tuesday, the match here, that would have been a boundary.
03:25No worries at all about that.
03:27Gillespie bowls now.
03:28David Boone is taking strike.
03:34Four runs and here's Bill Lowy.
03:39Thank you, Richie.
03:40Good afternoon and all.
03:42David Boone playing very well.
03:44Very strong off his pads.
03:48The first boundary.
03:51Under and over.
03:53And found the gap at backwards square leg.
04:03Just beats Jeremy Coney.
04:04He's locked one or two off the back foot.
04:06But found the gap.
04:08Two more to Marsh.
04:10So this is a very good partnership.
04:11They're starting to accelerate now.
04:13Forcerfieldsman back.
04:16De Marsh and Boone.
04:17Great boost for Australia the summer.
04:25Beautifully played.
04:26The full shot.
04:28Got a lot of bounce and Boone keeping that down.
04:31It's in superb form, David Boone.
04:37There's no fire at all in this pitch.
04:39And if New Zealand are going to drop them in short, they will be punished.
04:41Martin Crowe has to keep the ball up to the batsman a lot more than what he's done so far.
04:53And Martin Crowe says, what can I do?
04:57You can pitch him up, Martin.
04:59Well played.
05:00Beautifully played down the ground, David Boone.
05:02That's four.
05:0311 runs off the over.
05:07No record for 72.
05:10It's Coney now coming in to Jeff Marsh.
05:17This time he doesn't chip.
05:18He whacks it.
05:19And that's four.
05:19Beautifully played.
05:20And the crowd are loving this onslaught by this young pair.
05:24And they've grown a knowledge too.
05:26That's very knowledgeable one-day cricket.
05:29Jeff Marsh knew there was a big gap out there on the leg side.
05:33In front of mid-wicket.
05:37And Jeremy Coney, just at slow-medium pace, put it on the leg stump on it.
05:42Nice, comfortable length in the slot.
05:45And Bruce Blair unable to stop it.
05:52He's got him right through with the turn there, beating Jeff Marsh.
05:57Trying to play his favourite to late cut.
05:59And the spin just beating his back.
06:02But he's got Australia off to a good start along with David Boone.
06:07Boone and Marsh, already this summer, put together a couple of hundred partnerships up here.
06:12But on this occasion, just denied by two runs.
06:15Marsh just easing out of the way there.
06:21Boone picking the gap on that occasion.
06:23He hit it in the air.
06:24But found the gap between the square point and the backward point.
06:31Just four boundaries today by the Australians, which highlights this outfield, the Sydney Cricket Ground.
06:37Just a little heavier than we've seen it in the last couple of matches.
06:41But even though Alan Borda didn't time that one all that well, went in the air.
06:45And then it slewed away.
06:47Spin then taking it towards the boundary.
06:50Gillespie bowls now.
06:51David Boone is taking strike.
06:55Magnificent shot from David Boone.
06:57Excellent placement.
06:59Good timing.
07:03Third boundary for David Boone.
07:14And she really is finding form today.
07:17Hitting that ball just across it a little bit.
07:19Beautiful timing there.
07:20I think we mentioned over in Adelaide.
07:22Very good bat that David Boone's using because there wasn't a great deal of effort in that.
07:26Just a lot of timing.
07:27I mean, just whipping it off the pads.
07:29Just short enough.
07:30Gave him a chance to have a look at it.
07:32And he plonked it away over in that vacant mid-wicket area.
07:38Well, he went to smash that one away towards mid-wicket.
07:42It was a dead-straight field from Gillespie.
07:44And it ended up shattering the stumps.
07:47It certainly was dead straight, Tony.
07:48Middle stump pushed back.
07:50It's a breakthrough that New Zealand so badly needed.
07:52But well played, David Boone.
07:54And he spat it very well.
07:55That was there to be put away.
07:56It was short enough.
07:57Didn't bounce.
07:58Hit the stump about six inches down and Boone out bold for 64.
08:09That was a very quick run.
08:11It must be out.
08:11Yes, he's got him.
08:13Well, Dean Jones calling for the one there.
08:15Border had no option but to respond.
08:17He went as fast as he possibly could.
08:20And so Alan Border run out.
08:22Not a very good call, that, from Dean Jones.
08:24He actually hit it just a little bit too firmly to the fieldsman.
08:26And it was the slowest of slow throws.
08:28It was almost a gentle underarm throw.
08:31It hit the top of the middle stump.
08:33Border struggling for his ground.
08:35And that was the breakthrough that New Zealand needed.
08:38Border run out for 29.
08:41Australia 3 for 147.
08:44Stephen Ward is the new batsman.
08:46He has a strike rate of 64.
08:48So he's around about average.
08:51Although he's had some success.
08:55That's a very valuable stroke when the captain has decided not to have a slip fielder.
09:02Old-fashioned or not, I still hate to see a field set without a slip.
09:08There are so many occasions when four runs go through there at catchable height.
09:12And the latter is one of the more important things about it.
09:16Richard Hadley, whose stock delivery is the one that moves away from the right-hander just a little,
09:20he picks up so many wickets with catches in the slip-in-galley area.
09:24But having the area unprotected means that when he does beat the batsman and produces the edge,
09:30it's four runs.
09:40Oh, trouble.
09:50Difficult to believe that could happen.
09:53That's appalling communication between those two Australian batsmen.
09:57Steve Waugh as the batsman run out.
10:01I have a feeling that Jones wasn't looking at the other batsman at all.
10:08He just kept his eye on the fielder.
10:11Chatfield now to Jones.
10:14This will be a good test for Chatfield.
10:16This is one time when he's had a bit of a problem.
10:19Well run, Craig Matthews.
10:23As he's sometimes had problems adjusting to these last few overs, Chatfield.
10:28The pressure will be right on him.
10:30That was magnificent running, magnificent aggressive running by Matthews.
10:36He really did come back for the second very quickly there.
10:39Good shot too by Dean Jones.
10:41Playing it down the ground and Matthews flying away out of picture there and
10:46have a look at him come back.
10:50Chatfield to Matthews.
10:54Oh, he's hit that one high in the air.
10:56Will this be out?
10:56He's got him.
10:58Deep mid-wicket moves in there and makes the catch.
11:02And Chatfield has claimed yet another wicket.
11:05Matthews going for the big hit down towards deep mid-wicket.
11:10And he's out.
11:12Eight runs and a wicket off that.
11:13Ewan Chatfield over.
11:16It's five for 224.
11:20That's got to be close.
11:21Yes, Dean Jones walking well across his wicket.
11:24That had to be out.
11:26Good bowling once again from Hadley right on line.
11:30Yes, well, if you bowl it dead straight and the Vatsman's got to move around the crease
11:34to try and get it away, the chances are that this is going to happen.
11:37Hadley once again bang on target.
11:40And Dean Jones being hit on the edge of the pad there, almost in front of middle and off.
11:45And the ball looked to me as if it was on its way to middle stuff.
11:50So at the end of a good innings from Dean Jones, six for 224.
11:55And once again, New Zealand choosing to protect the leg side very heavily and leave that area all the way
12:02from third man around a deep bit off open.
12:06Oh, and he's got him a beautiful delivery.
12:09And Hadley is restricting this Australian total to something that is within the means of the New Zealand batting side.
12:18That's a magnificent ball.
12:20There's not much you can do about these in the circumstances right up there in the block hole.
12:24And have a look at that.
12:25It was a quick delivery too and went thundering into middle and off.
12:29A little nod of the head from Phillips.
12:32It was just too quick and too good for him in these circumstances.
12:35He's up for 3, 7 for 225.
12:42That's pretty close.
12:45Richard Hadley is a short third man.
12:48And they come back for 2.
12:52Leg buys.
12:54Signalled by umpire French.
13:01That must have been very close.
13:11Sticking the bottom of the front pad.
13:15The umpire down that end probably deciding that he may have got outside the line.
13:23Just clears mid-wicket.
13:24Bruce Edgar is out deep.
13:27And they get back for 2.
13:40And they'll get just a single in that little chip.
13:45So 7 for 239.
13:47Australia batting first in this match.
13:49New Zealand will require 240 runs from their 50 overs.
13:54They need to score at 4.8 per over for victory.
13:57It should be a great contest.
14:00Well, that turned out to be a pretty good performance from the Australians.
14:03They'd have liked 250 or 260.
14:05I guess the New Zealanders would have liked to have kept them down to 230.
14:08As it is, the New Zealanders now need 240 to win from 50 overs at 4.8 per over.
14:14It was a fairly consistent performance from the Australian side.
14:17Boone played very well up the top.
14:1964 from 95 balls.
14:20And Dean Jones coming back into the international side.
14:23A quick 53.
14:25It took him only 58 deliveries.
14:26And the only unfortunate thing there was the run out of Border, followed by a similar run out of Steve
14:33Waugh.
14:33The bowling figures for New Zealand.
14:34Hadley, two wickets.
14:35Bowled quite superbly again.
14:37Chatfield won.
14:38Gillespie won.
14:38And Bracewell won.
14:39I thought Bracewell bowled especially well out there.
14:42His off-spin turned.
14:43And he bowled a very good line and length as well.
14:46With Crowe and Coney bowling out the remaining 10 overs between them.
14:50So it's 240 to win.
14:52The rate, 4.8 per over.
14:54It should be a great contest.
14:58I don't know, I think.
15:00Oh, and he's gone right through him this time.
15:03So it was second ball in Adelaide.
15:06It's third ball here at the SCG.
15:08And the same number of runs on the board.
15:10I don't think that experiment is working.
15:16Oh, and he's knocked off-stump right out of the ground.
15:19On that occasion, Martin Crowe trying to hit across the line.
15:23Hit through mid-wicket, one of his favourite shots.
15:25But he picked the wrong delivery.
15:28Well, earlier in the over, we saw Martin Crowe play two fine shots through that onside.
15:33And he was looking for a third.
15:34But a beautiful delivery hit right on the seam.
15:37Kept going nice and straight.
15:38And out goes that off-stump.
15:40A beautiful delivery by Craig McDermott,
15:42who seems to be finding his form in these last couple of matches for Australia,
15:46particularly with the ball.
15:47New Zealand, 2 for 14 in this, the fifth over.
15:56Very good delivery.
15:57That one moving off the seam.
15:59Moving quite quickly.
16:02But it costs Craig McDermott four runs.
16:06New Zealand, 2 for 18.
16:13Good shot.
16:14He loves that pull shot.
16:28Well, that's well played.
16:29Hits the batsman.
16:31Oh, that's an extra fielder for the Australians.
16:35Edgar down that end, wearing that one on the back.
16:39And a little apology there to his mate.
16:42This is what you call getting your pound of flesh, isn't it?
16:54It's through to the keeper.
16:55And he's got him caught behind.
16:56Big breakthrough for Simon Davis and Australia.
17:01Edgar nicking that one away to the keeper.
17:04And on that occasion, Phillips making no mistake.
17:08Straightforward catch.
17:10New Zealand, 3 for 67.
17:14Experience right and Coney at the wicket.
17:18Gilbert de Boa to Jeremy Coney.
17:23Goodfully driven.
17:24That beats Borda at cover.
17:28Sweeper Marsh comes around.
17:30Two runs.
17:36Interesting field.
17:37There's a third man very square.
17:40There's a big gap.
17:45Between the...
17:49Between the third man
17:51and the slip region.
17:53That's the area that Gerry Coney
17:54will be looking for behind the wicket.
18:10Now Matthew's damaged his shoulder down in Adelaide, I reckon.
18:14He picked up on the longest boundary down Adelaide
18:17and threw back off balance.
18:20He slipped a little bit down there.
18:22Threw back off...
18:23I reckon he's done that tendon
18:26that runs across the top of the shoulder.
18:28And oh!
18:29He even pulled back on the throw.
18:31And that's what happened.
18:32It went wide of Wayne Phillips.
18:37So easy for...
18:39fielders to throw their arm out.
18:42Typical baseball injury or cricket injury.
18:49Well, away it goes.
18:52Let's keep those stumps rolling back.
18:57It was done earlier in the innings
18:59when McDermott
19:00knocked back Martin Crowe's off stump.
19:08That's in the air.
19:09It's going down towards square left.
19:10This will be out.
19:10He's got it!
19:11Matthews breaks through as well.
19:14Well, it wasn't a great delivery.
19:16He could have almost hit it anywhere he wanted to.
19:18He ended it hitting, hitting it straight down.
19:20Stephen Ward's throat.
19:22I guess that went straight to him, Tony.
19:24But I thought that was a good catch
19:25because I thought that Steve Ward,
19:27just for a fraction of a moment,
19:29failed to pick it up.
19:30Big grandstand in the background.
19:32A lusty hit.
19:33Went straight out to him.
19:34And suddenly he caught it right in front of the eyes.
19:37So Greg Matthews there.
19:39He had two fingers up just a moment ago.
19:41Now he's only got one up,
19:43signaling out.
19:44And John Wright's the man that's been dismissed.
19:45He's out for 24.
19:47And New Zealand's struggling at 5 for 91.
19:50And Gilbert to Richard Hadley.
19:56Oh, well, bold.
19:57Beautifully bold, Dave Gilbert.
19:59That one really ripped him, almost ripped him in half.
20:02Knipped back up the hill at him.
20:05And beat the inside edge.
20:07He has that capacity, Dave Gilbert,
20:09to produce the odd beautiful delivery.
20:11And that was giving Hadley a bit of his own treatment back there
20:14that Hadley gave the Australians in Adelaide.
20:17That was through him then.
20:20What a great deal of life in this wicket
20:22because that was bounced in front of Wayne Phillips then.
20:35And that single brings the 100 up for New Zealand.
20:40The run rate required now is 8.8
20:45as Bruce Reid comes back into the attack.
20:50That's a big hit.
20:52That's a massive hit going out to Long Island.
20:54That's way back.
20:56A beauty.
21:07Beautiful, clean strike there from Richard Hadley.
21:09New Zealand have only hit two fours in the innings.
21:12And now the first six.
21:14Hadley getting that ball right in the slot there from Bruce Reid.
21:18And that's ten rows back in the Brewongle stand.
21:22Five for 122.
21:26There's Matthews.
21:27He's off the field with an injured shoulder.
21:30Thrown out his arm.
21:31Return from Midoff.
21:33Was brought about by a throw at the Adelaide Oval.
21:36The long straight hit at Adelaide.
21:38Been another fieldsman undone trying to make the distance.
21:42As we see Simon Davis come back into the attack.
21:50And Australian controlling this match by excellent bowling.
21:57Oh, he's bowled him.
21:58A very ordinary shot from Geoff Crowe.
22:00But well done, Simon Davis.
22:02Spot on first delivery.
22:03Second wicket.
22:04And New Zealand's in trouble at the Sydney cricket ground.
22:09The most impossible for New Zealand to get out of this hole now.
22:12Six wickets down.
22:13And Geoff Crowe moving outside that leg stump.
22:17Exposing all three for Simon Davis.
22:19And Simon Davis says here, if you leave me all three, I'll hit midland leg.
22:23That's the end of Geoff Crowe.
22:24Well-bold, Simon Davis.
22:27Indeed, a little ripper for Australia.
22:29And Geoff Crowe out for 19.
22:30New Zealand still need 118.
22:32Six for 122 in the 39th.
22:38There he goes again.
22:39He gets it square.
22:40Well played, Richard Hadley.
22:41The great all-rounder accepting the challenge, flipping it over squarely.
22:53And that's out.
22:54Straight to mid-wicket.
22:56Bruce Blair departs for three.
23:00Simplest of all catches a little chip away and once again read amongst the wickets.
23:06Well, that's the final nail in New Zealand's coffin, surely.
23:09And the year-weeks, Winnie, Stu Gillespie, and Ewan Chatfield to come.
23:12And Bruce Blair, who had looked so good during his previous knocks during this World Series Cup,
23:15holding out in rather meek fashion with a very simple catch in there to Geoff Marsh at mid-on.
23:21And Bruce Blair out for three.
23:23Bruce Reid has another wicket, and New Zealand hopelessly placed now in the 40th over.
23:32What a magnificent hit, but not far enough, I'm afraid.
23:45I haven't thought I'd put one of those down in Adelaide the other day.
23:51Seems to be the way of those who hold their hands up in the air, baseball style, that they can't
23:57cling on to the ball.
23:58It's gone miles up, I want you to know.
24:00And have a look at this.
24:01His neck is bent right back and up those hands.
24:04And at the end of the day, actually, he came in a little bit too far.
24:07And down she went.
24:15A good catch.
24:17What a pity we've finished with classic catchers' decisions for the year.
24:21That one might have sneaked in.
24:24There's no doubt it would have got well up the list as well.
24:27Let's have another look at this magnificent border catch.
24:30Diving away as he does so often in this position at mid-week.
24:33Look at that ball's hit very firmly and very low.
24:36And have a look at that.
24:38The whack into those two hands of his.
24:40Those two very safe hands.
24:43I think Alan Borden might have enjoyed that, judging by the look on his face.
24:47Devin McSweeney certainly didn't.
24:49He's out for one.
24:50Eight for 1.37.
24:53Stuart Gillespie to take strike to Bruce Reid.
25:00And he's on a hat-trick.
25:04And Gillespie came out at a half-trot.
25:07He's going to go back just as quickly.
25:10Bruce Reid has bowled pretty well this evening.
25:13Moved the ball away from the right-handers.
25:15He's been cutting it back to Hadley.
25:17And that one has just banged against the stump.
25:20As it's moved the way off the seam and hit the off-stump straight back.
25:23What a beautiful ball that was.
25:24And if you come in at number 10, it's pretty difficult to get an edge on those.
25:30And off he goes with company.
25:34Out for a duck.
25:35So Stuart Gillespie on his way.
25:37Bowled by Reid.
25:38Nine for 1.37.
25:43Got him.
25:44Simon Davis cleans up the tail.
25:46Hadley remains not out.
25:4830.
25:49New Zealand all out to 140 in the 43rd over.
25:52For a wonderful performance.
25:54And that erases all the unpleasant memories of last Monday at the Adelaide Oval.
25:58The Australian Bowl is doing a magnificent job for Alan Borner.
26:02Defending 238 runs in front of 26,000 people.
26:07They've cleaned up New Zealand here this evening with a wonderful performance with the ball.
26:12And on the scoreboard, the Australians just noticing there congratulations to Bruce Reid on a hat-trick.
26:18A couple of them just looking back there and congratulating him.
26:22I'm sure that none of them fully realised that he took it.
26:26It certainly snuck under our guard.
26:27And he looks up at the scoreboard there.
26:29And as Bill Laurie said, what an about turn by the Australians.
26:33A 206 run defeat over in Adelaide.
26:36And certainly a comprehensive victory here in Sydney tonight.
26:53Well, what an onslaught that was by the Australians.
26:56They really came back from that humiliating defeat at the hands of the New Zealanders down in Adelaide on Monday.
27:01They batted well today.
27:02They bowed magnificently.
27:04And the feeling was absolutely superb other than for the drop catch by David Boone towards the end.
27:09A fine performance.
27:10And the scorecard for New Zealand reflects that.
27:13140 they were bowled out for in 42.4 overs.
27:16With a top score of Richard Hadley.
27:1830 not out in 37 balls faced.
27:20And just five double figure scores.
27:23140.
27:24And that gave Australia a win by 99 runs.
27:27The effect of the bowling is shown in those figures.
27:30McDermott bowled well again tonight.
27:322 for 28 in 7 overs.
27:34Davis has bowled well throughout this competition.
27:373 for 25 in 9.4.
27:39Reid, a hat-trick.
27:403 for 29.
27:41Matthews, 1 for 27.
27:43An extremely good effort considering that he has this arm injury, the shoulder injury.
27:48And Dave Gilbert, 1 for 24.
27:50Everyone played their part.
27:51A fine performance from Alan Borda's side.
27:54And here is Borda now with the opposition skipper, Jeremy Coney.
27:57And the player of the match with Tony Gregg down in the presentation area.
28:00Thank you, Richie.
28:02Well, once again, the Australian board have given me all this money.
28:04$5,000 and the Benson Hedges gold goblet all out of the kitty provided by Benson Hedges.
28:10Alan Borda, well done.
28:11There's the $3,000.
28:12Thank you very much.
28:13What a game.
28:13Excellent game of cricket for us.
28:15Good comeback after the disappointment in Adelaide the other day.
28:19I just hope all the members of the South Australian Cricket Association are watching.
28:23Well, now, the batting for Stott was useful.
28:25First of all, the conditions.
28:27Nice dry wicket out there.
28:28Excellent wicket.
28:28A little bit slower and lower than the wicket we had last week, but still, you know, very
28:33good to bat on.
28:34But once we'd started batting, it became obvious that it might be more difficult later on the
28:39game to score runs if we bowled well.
28:41Did you think you had enough in those conditions?
28:44Obviously, you always liked more, but I thought that was around the mark because the outfield
28:48was a little bit slow.
28:49The wicket was starting to die a little bit and spin, so, you know, I was confident that,
28:54you know, that would be a winning total.
28:55And Dean Jones back in making runs, one or two run outs, a few blemishes, but striking
29:00the ball well.
29:01Yeah.
29:02He's fitted into the side excellently well.
29:05And he's fielding, you know, as a new dimension, so, you know, hopefully we can go on to bigger
29:09and better things from here.
29:10What about the hat-trick?
29:11Now, did you pick it?
29:13Did you know?
29:14Well, we had no idea, actually.
29:15We, it was just, we thought we'd had two wickets in a row.
29:19Right.
29:20With Ewan Chatfield coming in, no disrespect, Ewan, but, you know, we thought we had a fair
29:24chance of getting a hat-trick, and it wasn't until the announcement came over, the PA, that
29:28we'd realised it was a hat-trick.
29:29And he didn't know himself?
29:30No, no one realised at all out on the ground.
29:32We were hoping that, you know, something might happen on that first ball to Chatfield.
29:36There's a nice surprise, and the bowlers really have done well for you.
29:39Oh, it's just been a fantastic, you know, one-day series for them.
29:41A couple of bad games, but, I mean, that can happen in one-day cricket, and, you know,
29:46hopefully, you know, we haven't sort of peaked too early.
29:48So, well done today.
29:49Thanks for the next one.
29:51Right, well, we've got this Benson Hedges gold goblet, as well as $500 for the man of
29:55the match, and David Boone has taken that out today.
29:58Congratulations, David.
29:59Well played.
30:01Enjoyed?
30:02Yeah, it was quite good.
30:03You know, I've been very happy this season, the way things have gone, but the way I got
30:07out tonight wasn't very impressive, and the captain wasn't all that impressed either.
30:11But that's going to happen now and again in the one-day game.
30:13That's something that the batsmen accepting, that every now and again you're going to have
30:16to go for it a bit.
30:18Yeah, now and again, but I don't think that was the right time.
30:21I think I got a bit overheated and played a bad shot.
30:24You consciously, you know, we keep talking about the field being in.
30:27Do you think of the over-the-top thing?
30:30Is that something that's on your mind in the initial stages as an opener?
30:32Yeah, sometimes, you know, but I've always found that I'm not very good at that, so I try
30:38to push it through the gaps more than try and go over the top.
30:41Only if, sometimes I'll try if I've got a bit of room, but not very often.
30:45Well, you batted magnificently, but I can't let you go without saying how high did that
30:48one go?
30:49Well, I never thought it was going to come down, but I was going in and out and in and
30:52out.
30:52I didn't know where it was, but that's the way things go.
30:55Well, at night, it's a little hard to judge, but a little bit disappointing about that,
30:59but anyway.
30:59Congratulations today.
31:00Thank you very much.
31:02Right, we've also got Jeremy Coney, who's just hot out of the shower.
31:06Thanks.
31:06Bad luck.
31:07That was a good performance by Australia.
31:09Yes, it was.
31:10We were reasonably happy with the way we contained them.
31:13We felt a reasonable total on a goodish wicket, and then they came out and bowled extremely
31:17well.
31:18We lost a few wickets earlier than we'd hoped.
31:22And actually, the wicket seemed to lose its bounce just a little bit, and we were trying
31:25to thrash it away there, and it was hitting the toe of the bat all the time.
31:28And in the slow outfield, we found that once we did hit it through, then the boundaries
31:33were being saved.
31:34So they played extremely well.
31:36Early to bed for a few nights, because it's all on that last one now, isn't it?
31:39Yeah, test of character, isn't it?
31:40Test of character.
31:41Test of character.
31:42Yeah, certainly.
31:42Well, good luck.
31:43We hope you come through.
31:43Thank you very much.
31:44Right, that's all from down here.
31:46Richie, back to you.
31:47From the Sydney Cricket Ground, thank you very much for being with us, and we look
31:50forward to having you with us again on Friday.
31:52Good night.
32:02This has been another presentation from NINE's Wide World of Sports.
