00:10Welcome to the highlights of the third match in this triple-header weekend at the Adelaide Oval in the Benson
00:14Hedges World Series Cup.
00:15This one, Australia against New Zealand. The Australians already in the finals.
00:20The Australian team card today. Trimble comes into the side for Richie.
00:24Richie has damaged a muscle in the top part of his thigh. So that is the only change in Alan
00:29Borda's side.
00:30And the New Zealand team card has Bruce Blair in for John Reid.
00:35But Jeremy Coney won the toss and for the first time in the competition this year,
00:39he decided that on having had the coin come down the right way, he would take first strike.
00:44Pitch looked magnificent. Conditions were marvellous and another capacity crowd in here at the Adelaide Oval.
00:50The other surprise was that New Zealand decided to change their batting order.
00:54John Bracewell was sent in first with Bruce Edgar and Bracewell will face the first ball.
00:59Your commentators Ian Chappell and Bill Lurrie.
01:05And taken, second ball. So that experiment has not worked.
01:10Craig McDermott getting the out-swing it a go.
01:13Wayne Phillips knocked it up and the catch was eventually taken at second slip.
01:18Good start again for Craig McDermott. Breaking through with the new ball.
01:22The ball swinging away from the right-hander.
01:24Was short of a good length. He came forward.
01:27The bounce beat him in the swing. Phillips didn't gather it cleanly.
01:30A bad take but it went straight to Borda and the first wicket falls.
01:34New Zealand, one for now.
01:39McDermott to Martin Crowe.
01:44Driven just wide of Craig McDermott.
01:46The hand went out a bit late.
01:51That means a long chase for Geoff Marsh.
01:55Easily back for four.
01:59McDermott got a touch there. He was just a bit slow reacting to that return catch.
02:07That's an excellent shot.
02:09That ball wasn't all that short.
02:11Martin Crowe picked it up very quickly.
02:14He really is a marvellous player of the full shot.
02:18Reid to Edgar.
02:21Oh, that's wide and in the air and dropped.
02:25Well, he did very well to get a bit of bat on that.
02:28Had he not got any bat on it, of course it would have been signalled to wide.
02:32Boone jumping up away to his right there to try and get onto that one.
02:36He got a hand to it but it deflected away.
02:40Another couple of hinges would have been pretty handy for him.
02:43That was a very difficult chance and a lesser man may have not even got near it.
02:48Davis Bowles to Martin Crowe.
02:50Oh, what a shot drop.
02:53Well, that was hit like a rocket at square leg.
02:56And had that been caught, that would also have been a shell ultra-classy catch, I can tell you.
03:02When Martin Crowe plays the pull shot, he hits them like a rocket.
03:05Marsh the man in the firing line on this occasion.
03:08Well, this one could have dislocated the finger too.
03:12He really has that ability.
03:13That was a long way outside the off stump when he tugged that behind square leg.
03:19Bang!
03:21Magnificent shot.
03:23Marsh diving full length to grab that.
03:25A valiant effort.
03:26They're just not sticking for the Australians.
03:34It's in the hand, he's gone!
03:37Well, now that is interesting.
03:39That ball right above his head and I can't quite understand that.
03:42The umpire hasn't called no ball.
03:44Now in the rules, we know that if the ball's above the batsman's shoulder in his normal standing position,
03:50even if he's out, the batsman, the umpire should be calling no ball.
03:54And Martin Crowe there shaking his head and saying, well, what is this rule for?
03:59Let's have another look.
04:00Is it above his shoulder?
04:02Well, of course it's above his shoulder.
04:04He does get back to ball.
04:05He's out caught.
04:05It should have been a no ball.
04:09Oh, well played.
04:10Through the gap at mid wicket.
04:12Down towards the boundary.
04:14Border won't catch that one.
04:15And that outfield is nice and quick.
04:17If you manage to penetrate the field with all the fieldsmen up, it's going to carry to the boundary.
04:24Matthews to Edgar.
04:29Shot.
04:31Punched away off the back foot by Bruce Edgar.
04:36Bracewell out without scoring and Crowe for 26 in controversial circumstances.
04:41Here's Dave Gilbert.
04:44And there goes Dave Gilbert.
04:46Roll chase.
04:47Here's Ian Chappell with matchwork.
04:53Thanks Ritchie.
04:54He was well struck by John Wright.
04:56Really crunching that one down the ground.
04:59A long boundary.
05:01It's a hit of a good 110 metres, but he made it quite easily.
05:09That's a good shot.
05:13Edgar has given his version of the two step.
05:16And unfortunately, another catch goes down.
05:18David Boone, who's had two very difficult chances here today.
05:23Hasn't been able to claim either one.
05:27She's had two hot ones.
05:29That went a long way.
05:30Both of them have been on his right hand.
05:36McDermott will have to hustle to cut that one off.
05:38And he can't.
05:40Beautifully timed there by John Wright.
05:43And that brings up the 100 for New Zealand.
05:55But that's another boundary.
05:57He's picked that one off.
05:58To the West End beer side.
06:01It's inappropriate to discuss that at the moment.
06:03So Max is just faulting a little bit.
06:05He's bowled pretty well.
06:09John Wright again looking for that short boundary.
06:12And he's found it.
06:13And Peter Williams, he's found a bit of form here today.
06:16He certainly has.
06:17He showed some glimpses of it in Melbourne on Thursday night.
06:20Didn't do too much here on Saturday.
06:22But John Wright on that occasion showing no mercy at all to Dave Gilbert.
06:26As the ball was in short.
06:27And John Wright loves to hook.
06:29Rocking back on his heels.
06:31And Greg Matthews leaps high in the air.
06:34But not even the great Greg Matthews could get anywhere near it.
06:37Four rows back.
06:44Shout of catch at this time from Matthews.
06:47But once again the chance goes begging.
06:50Australia really have had a number of opportunities today.
06:54They haven't been able to grasp them.
06:58Stephen Waugh, the fieldsman on this occasion.
07:01I think he slipped just a little.
07:03Perhaps he's suffering because he's not wearing spikes.
07:09That one's hit high and hard down towards mid wicket.
07:12Will it be over the top?
07:13Over the top it goes.
07:15Another big six there.
07:17To Wright.
07:18That one hits down towards mid wicket.
07:20Right off the mid of the bat.
07:22And he's second so far in this innings.
07:27Two sixes and four fours for John Wright.
07:30Beautiful footwork.
07:31Wasn't quite to the pitch of the ball.
07:33He realised that he had to hoick it right over that boundary.
07:36To make sure of it really being safe.
07:38Because there was a fieldsman converging on it.
07:47He's hit that one in the air.
07:49This is going to be out.
07:49There's man underneath it.
07:50Gilbert's got him.
07:53So Wright going for another big hit down the ground.
07:55Didn't quite middle that one.
07:57The catch hit the toe of the bat.
07:59Went straight up in the air.
08:00And if Gilbert had dropped that he would have been shot.
08:03At the end of a tremendous partnership between John Wright and Bruce Edgar.
08:07120 in all.
08:08And coming up pretty quickly.
08:09And John Wright doing the right thing here for his team.
08:12Continuing to go after the Australian bowling.
08:15He leant back on that one instead of getting the front foot right to it.
08:18And spooned a comfortable catch down there to Craig McDermott.
08:21And New Zealand three for 157.
08:24That's going to be reached in one for 13.
08:27By comparison very economical.
08:34In the air.
08:35He's got him.
08:36Alan Borda fielding a backward point.
08:38Has taken that one.
08:40No trouble at all.
08:42So Edgar goes off to Reid.
08:44Just outside off stump.
08:45And yet again Reid takes a wicket with the first ball of his fell.
08:49Isn't it amazing how the ball is following Alan Borda these days.
08:52Great pair of hands the Australian captain.
08:54Hit that right off the middle of the bat.
08:56Angled the bat.
08:57And that went like a rocket to Borda.
08:58At just backward point.
09:00But it was pretty wide of Edgar.
09:01But another breakthrough for Australia.
09:04So Edgar out.
09:05Court board of Bold Reid.
09:06And New Zealand losing two quick wickets.
09:09Now four for 160.
09:16Once again it's Bruce Reid.
09:25He's got it down to three.
09:26But the 200 has come up for New Zealand.
09:28And that's a splendid batting performance.
09:30Four for 201.
09:34And Dermot rolls to Kony.
09:40Once again the placement is perfect.
09:45It's a good save.
09:48Matthews again.
09:57Trimble.
10:00No.
10:02No.
10:05No.
10:05Oliver.
10:06Wed in.
10:07Came out.
10:09Grabbed at it again.
10:10But it just touched the ground.
10:16There's outside leg stump.
10:17And he's got an edge.
10:18Doesn't even wait to.
10:20See what Bruce Martin has to say on the matter.
10:23But a very good innings from Jeremy Coney.
10:26And one that set up the good score for New Zealand.
10:30This is very well played.
10:31Backing away he was here.
10:32and obviously a little tiny outside edge there
10:35the ball flies over the top of the off stump
10:37Phillips takes it
10:38doesn't really make much of an appeal there
10:41because Jeremy Coney was on his way
10:445 for 2.24
10:49Knit off
10:50and he's got it
10:51so that's a good break for Australia
10:53and that will perhaps restrict the New Zealand tally
10:58Craig McDermott is the man at deep knit off
11:02here's Hadley deciding to go down the ground
11:04once again
11:05and placed perfectly down there
11:07it's Craig McDermott
11:08hit the mid of the bat
11:10went quite a long way down there
11:12but unfortunately for Hadley and New Zealand
11:14straight to Craig McDermott
11:16so that's the end of Richard Hadley's innings
11:21out for 24
11:22and it's 6 for 2.26
11:27and that's well hit
11:29that's going to clear mid on
11:32and almost clears the mid on boundary
11:34that is a big hit
11:39and he's lost off stump
11:40trying to repeat the dose
11:42but he's done a good job for New Zealand
11:48Sweeney goes to third man
11:49I'd be looking for 2 or 3 here I would think
11:52McDermott just moves around very slowly
11:57276
11:57New Zealand have posted an excellent score
12:01Australia looking for 277 for victory
12:04they need to score at a run rate of 5.54 to win this game
12:07we have a real contest on our hands
12:11Richard Hadley
12:13obviously the danger man for New Zealand
12:15he's the most accurate of their bowlers
12:17the quickest
12:18and if he fires early on
12:20it could really be tough
12:21it's going to be tough enough anyhow
12:24276 scored by New Zealand
12:26equation
12:27your first glimpse of that one
12:29in the air
12:30and beautifully taken
12:31what a magnificent catch
12:33by Jeremy Coney
12:34he has got great hands
12:36diving away to his right
12:37he's ready to snaffle that one
12:39an inch above the surface
12:41the magnificent slip film
12:43on Jerry Coney
12:48oh he smashed that one
12:50beautiful shot David Boone
12:53he murdered that through extra cover
12:56all the way along the ground as well
12:58and it's gone racing into the farthest boundary
13:00on this ground
13:05in the air
13:06he's got him again
13:07what a magnificent fielder he is
13:09that one bounced a little bit
13:10just outside the off stump
13:12War had a bit of a flirt at it
13:14it went very quickly to Coney
13:15this time two hands to it
13:17but it went straight in
13:20well the new batsman is young Glenn Trimble
13:23his father of course Sam Trimble
13:25who played so often so well for Queensland
13:28Trimble on strike now
13:30and he's off the mark
13:31what a good shot too
13:32well played Glenn Trimble
13:34he smashed that through mid wicket
13:37one of the great fast bowlers in the world
13:39up against him
13:40and he's whipped him away to mid wicket for four
13:43not a bad way to start
13:47oh he's got him
13:48another one
13:50well Jeremy Cody has caught the third one of this innings
13:53that was quite a thicky south side edge
13:56went flying away to slip
13:57and that's the end of Glenn Trimble
13:59well the captains must have had a magnet in these balls
14:02used over here at the Adelaide over
14:03because it was Alan Border who picked up three catches
14:06in the New Zealand first innings
14:08and already Coney
14:09in this just the fifth over
14:11three catches
14:12that one probably the easiest of them all
14:15but certainly if I was Jeremy Coney
14:17I'd stay in that position all day
14:20edged
14:21and well taken this time by McSweeney
14:24so he cuts Coney out of it
14:26but that was also a good catch
14:29and once again
14:30a tremendous delivery
14:31a roundabout off stump
14:32on Richard Hadley
14:36what an advantage to have a man
14:38capable of catching
14:40talking of good catches
14:42look at McSweeney
14:43a long way across
14:44in front of first slip
14:45and a great catch
14:47and I think
14:47the direction given by Coney
14:49has lifted the whole New Zealand side
14:51with David Boone now back in the pavilion
14:53Australia a four for twenty
14:55border taking strike
14:57Gillespie at the bowler
15:00edged
15:00and oh
15:01Coney nearly makes it number four
15:05what a catch that would have been
15:11that's a great shot from Alan Border
15:14so he's taking the attack to New Zealand
15:16Stu Gillespie is the man who's suffered
15:19eight runs coming from that over
15:23Chatfield to Border
15:27Border skies it
15:29Hadley
15:31in fact it's Gillespie
15:32that third man
15:34he's taken the catch
15:35almost ran under
15:36but at the last minute
15:38he grabbed it
15:39and there's a look of relief
15:41on the face of
15:42Ewan Chatfield
15:43the bowler
15:45well
15:45what a breakthrough
15:46what can we say
15:47Australian innings
15:49crippled beyond belief
15:51five wickets down for thirty-one runs
15:53on a magnificent wicket
15:54250 runs plus
15:56capable out here
15:59and Phillips
16:00going the short way home
16:04for a boundary
16:05to get him off the mark
16:11that's out
16:12leg before wicket
16:13Gillespie the bowler
16:16Matthews the ex-batsman
16:18and six wickets down
16:19Matthews having a good hard look
16:21at his bat on that occasion
16:23took a while to turn
16:24to head
16:25to the dressing room
16:26but it looked
16:27adjacent
16:28if there wasn't any bat to it
16:29he shuffles across
16:32well he was pum
16:33and appeared
16:34Bruce Martin had a good look
16:35Matthews
16:37hesitates
16:37but Gillespie's the man
16:38who struck
16:39for New Zealand
16:40Australian
16:42team in tatters
16:43as Matthews goes for four
16:45it's now six
16:46for 47
16:47Gillespie
16:48to McDermott
16:53well there were two men out there
16:54and he needs one
16:56to get underneath it
16:56that's taken safely
16:59well
17:00John Wright
17:01is the man
17:01who took the catch
17:02I'm not sure about
17:04that tactic
17:05I've seen that happen
17:05with Craig McDermott
17:07on quite a few occasions
17:09Wayne Phillips
17:09is left stranded
17:10out there
17:11it's unbelievable really
17:12I know they've got to score
17:13seven runs per over
17:14to win this match
17:15but the man
17:16that should be striking
17:16should be Wayne Phillips
17:18and Wright took a
17:20straight forward
17:21outfield catch
17:21McDermott departs
17:23Gillespie gets his second wicket
17:24and it's all New Zealand
17:25here at the Adelaide Oval
17:26McDermott out for one
17:28there's seven for 55
17:29Australian reply
17:30to 276
17:37in the air
17:39and Chatfield takes the catch
17:42so the short boundary
17:43has sucked Wayne Phillips in
17:44and a good catch
17:46running in there
17:46by Ewan Chatfield
17:47not normally noted
17:49for his outfielding
17:50yes he looked as if
17:51he hadn't got that quite right
17:53Phillips once again
17:53going for that short boundary
17:55this time
17:55not quite keeping it down
17:56got underneath it a little bit
17:58there was a bit of top edge
17:59in that one
17:59and in comes Chatfield
18:01he caught it round about
18:02knee height
18:02at the end
18:03not a bad catch by him
18:05and that's the end
18:06of Wayne Phillips
18:07and so
18:08having made 22
18:09Australia now
18:10move down
18:10one to eight
18:12four sixty-eight
18:18a shout there
18:19from Bruce Blair
18:20and he's got a wicket
18:22so he's been dismissed
18:23for the first time
18:24today
18:25but he's struck back
18:26getting a wicket himself
18:34so Bruce Blair
18:35looking to wrap this game up
18:36pretty quickly for New Zealand
18:38the long
18:39lanky
18:39Bruce Reid
18:40not using those
18:41long legs of his at all
18:42caught on the crease line
18:44and in front
18:45Tony Crafter says
18:46your LBW
18:46Bruce Reid
18:47out for one
18:48and Australia
18:51sliding towards
18:52a very heavy defeat
18:53they're currently
18:54nine down
18:55for 70
19:01that's gone
19:02caught and bowled
19:03John Bracewell
19:04wraps up the innings
19:05so Australia
19:07have made the second
19:08lowest score
19:09in this competition
19:1163 was the previous
19:13or was the
19:14is the worst
19:15made by India
19:16and Australia
19:18all out for 70
19:19victory to New Zealand
19:20by 206 runs
19:21and the Kiwis
19:22have definitely
19:23shown no mercy
19:24well what a disaster
19:26that was
19:27and I've never seen
19:27a change batting
19:28order work yet
19:29it certainly didn't
19:30work today
19:30the final score
