00:16the Lord Almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end Amen our help is in
00:27the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth
00:41most merciful God we confess to you before the whole company of heaven and one
00:47another that we have sinned in thought word and deed I did what we have failed
00:55to do forgive us our sins heal us by your spirit and raise us to new life in Christ
01:08Amen O Lord make speed to save us O Lord make haste to help us glory be to the Father
01:21and to
01:21the Son and to the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be
01:28world without end Amen

01:40Psalm 78 pay attention my people to my instruction listen to the words I speak I
01:49I will sing a song that imparts wisdom I will make insightful observations about the past what we have heard
01:58and learned that which our ancestors have told us we will not hide from their descendants we will tell the
02:06next generation about the Lord's praiseworthy
02:09the Lord's praiseworthy acts about his strength and the amazing things he has done he has established a rule in
02:16Jacob he has set up a law in Israel he commanded our ancestors to make his deeds known to their
02:25descendants so that the next generation children yet to be born might know about them they will grow up and
02:34tell their descendants about them
02:37then they will place their confidence in God they will not forget the works of God and they will obey
02:43his commands then they will not be like their ancestors who were a stubborn and rebellious generation a generation that
02:52was not committed and faithful to God
02:56the Ephraimites the Ephraimites were armed with bows but they retreated in a day of battle they did not keep
03:03their covenant with God they refused to obey his law they forgot about what he had done the amazing things
03:11he had shown them
03:13he did amazing things in the sight of their ancestors in the land of Egypt in the region of Zoan
03:21he divided the sea and led them across it he made the waters stand in a heap he led them
03:29with a cloud by day and with the light of a fire all night long
03:33he broke open rocks in the wilderness and gave them enough water to fill the depths of the sea
03:41he caused streams to flow from the rock and made the waters flow like rivers
03:47yet they continued to sin against him and rebelled against the most high in the desert
03:55they willfully challenged God by asking for food to satisfy their appetite
04:01they insulted saying
04:04is God really able to give us food in the wilderness
04:09yes he struck a rock and water flowed out streams gushed forth
04:14but can he also give us food
04:17will he provide meat for his people
04:22when the Lord heard this he was furious a fire broke out against Jacob and his anger flared against Israel
04:29because they did not have faith in God and did not trust his ability to deliver them
04:35he gave a command to the clouds above and opened the doors in the sky
04:40he rained down manna for them to eat
04:42he gave them the grain of heaven
04:46man ate the food of the mighty ones
04:48he sent them more than enough to eat
04:52he brought the east wind through the sky and by his strength led forth the south wind
04:57he rained down meat on them like dust
05:01birds as numerous as the sand on all the seashores
05:06he caused them to fall right in the middle of their camp
05:09all around their homes
05:12they ate until they were beyond full
05:14he gave them what they desired
05:18they were not yet filled up
05:19their food still in their mouths
05:22when the anger of God flared up against them
05:24he killed some of the strongest of them
05:27he brought the young men of Israel to their knees
05:32despite all this they continued to sin
05:35and did not trust him to do amazing things
05:39so he caused them to die unsatisfied and filled with terror
05:44when he struck them down they sought his favour
05:47they turned back and longed for God
05:51they remembered that God was their protector
05:53and that God Most High was their deliverer
05:57but they deceived him with their words
06:00and lied to him
06:01they were not really committed to him
06:04and they were unfaithful to his covenant
06:08yet he is compassionate
06:10he forgives sin and does not destroy
06:14he often holds back his anger
06:16and does not stir up his fury
06:19he remembered that they were made of flesh
06:22and were like a wind that blows past
06:24and does not return
06:26how often they rebelled against him in the wilderness
06:29and insulted him in the wastelands
06:34they again challenged God and offended
06:36the Holy One of Israel
06:38they did not remember what he had done
06:41how he had delivered them from the enemy
06:43when he performed his awesome deeds in Egypt
06:46and his acts of judgment in the region of Zoan
06:50he turned their rivers into blood
06:52and they could not drink from their streams
06:55he sent swarms of biting insects against them
06:59as well as frogs that overran their land
07:03he gave their crops to the grasshopper
07:06the fruit of their labour to the locust
07:09he destroyed their vines with hail
07:12and their sycamore fig trees with driving rain
07:16he ran down hail upon their cattle
07:19and hurled lightning bolts down on their livestock
07:24his raging anger lashed out against them
07:28he sent fury, rage and trouble
07:30as messengers who bring disaster
07:34he sent his anger in full force
07:36he did not spare them from death
07:39he handed their lives over to destruction
07:43he struck down all the firstborn in Egypt
07:46the first fruits of their reproductive power
07:49in the tents of Ham
07:51and yet he brought out his people like sheep
07:55he led them through the wilderness like a flock
07:58he guided them safely along
08:00and they were not afraid
08:01but the sea covered their enemies
08:05he brought them to the border of his holy land
08:08to the mightiest land which his right hand acquired
08:14he drove the nations out from before them
08:16he assigned them their tribal allotments
08:19and allowed the tribes of Israel to settle down
08:22yet they challenged and defied God most high
08:26and did not obey his commands
08:30they were unfaithful and acted as treacherously as their ancestors
08:34they were as unreliable as a malfunctioning bow
08:39they made him angry with their pagan shrines
08:43and made him jealous with their idols
08:47God heard and was angry
08:49he completely rejected Israel
08:52he abandoned the sanctuary at Shiloh
08:55the tent where he lived amongst men
08:58he allowed the symbol of his strong presence
09:01to be captured
09:02he gave the symbol of his splendor
09:04into the hand of the enemy
09:08he delivered his people over to the sword
09:10and was angry with his chosen nation
09:14fire consumed their young men
09:16and their virgins remained unmarried
09:19their priests fell by the sword
09:22but their widows did not weep
09:25but then the Lord awoke from his sleep
09:28he was like a warrior in a drunken rage
09:31he drove his enemies back
09:33he made them a permanent target for insults
09:37he rejected the tent of Joseph
09:39he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim
09:42he chose the tribe of Judah
09:45and Mount Zion
09:46which he loves
09:47he made his sanctuary
09:49as enduring as the heavens above
09:51as secure as the earth
09:53which he established permanently
09:57he chose David his servant
09:59and took him from the sheepfolds
10:01he took him away from following the mother sheep
10:04and made him the shepherd of Jacob
10:06his people
10:07and of Israel his chosen nation
10:11David cared for them
10:13with pure motives
10:14he led them with skill
10:18glory be to the father
10:19and to the son
10:20and to the holy spirit
10:21as it was in the beginning
10:23is now and ever shall be
10:26world without end
10:27amen
10:33thus said the Lord God the Holy One of Israel
10:37in returning and rest shall you be saved
10:41quietness and trust shall be your strength
10:50be present O merciful God
10:52and protect us through the silent hours of this night
10:56so that we who are wearied by the changes and chances of this fleeting world
11:02may rest upon your eternal changelessness
11:08through Jesus Christ our Lord
11:11amen
11:18now according to your word sovereign Lord
11:21permit your servant to depart in peace
11:25for my eyes have seen your salvation
11:28that you have prepared
11:29in the presence of all peoples
11:32a light for the revelation to the Gentiles
11:36and for glory to your people Israel
11:41glory be to the father
11:43and to the son
11:44and to the holy spirit
11:45as it was in the beginning
11:47is now and ever shall be

11:56lighten our darkness Lord we pray
11:59and in your great mercy
12:01defend us from all perils and dangers
12:04of this night for the love of your only son our saviour Jesus Christ
12:12amen
12:16our father who art in heaven
12:18hallowed be thy name
12:20thy kingdom come
12:22thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven
12:26amen
12:27give us this day our daily bread
12:30and forgive us our trespasses
12:33as we forgive those who trespass against us
12:38lead us not into temptation
12:41but deliver us from evil
12:43for thine is the kingdom
12:46the power and the glory
12:48forever and ever
12:50amen
12:54in peace will we lie down and sleep
12:59for you alone Lord
13:00make us dwell in safety
13:05abide with us Lord Jesus
13:07for the night is at hand
13:10and the day is now past
13:15as the night watch looks for the morning
13:18so do we look for you
13:20O Christ
13:25come with the dawning of the day
13:27and make yourself known
13:29in the breaking of the bread
13:34may the Lord bless us and watch over us
13:38the Lord make his face shine upon us
13:41and be gracious to us
13:45the Lord look kindly on us
13:47and give us peace
