00:00And amidst the various controversies surrounding the 2026 World Cup, the opening day has finally arrived in Mexico City.
00:06Meanwhile, in the United States, fans are not only enjoying the event, but also preparing for their own kickoff celebrations.
00:12Our correspondent Harry Camelo reports from New York City.
00:18Featuring a spectacular lineup of world-class artists such as Shakira, Maná and Jay Balvin,
00:24the 2026 World Cup officially kicked off in Mexico City, where the tournament's opening match between Mexico and South Africa
00:33also took place.
00:35In the United States, fans of the Mexican national team dressed with the three jerseys from early in the day,
00:42even wearing them to work.
00:45However, with this World Cup considered one of the most expensive in history due to high ticket prices,
00:51a large portion of the fan base will be unable to attend matches in person,
00:57prompting the mayor of New York City to seek alternative ways for them to experience the event.
01:04The best things in life are free. So, too, should the World Cup fan experience.
01:08That is why we are delighted to say that we will be hosting five free official fan events,
01:15one in each borough featuring live viewings, local food offerings, and so much more.
01:20These events were not initially set to be free, but the world's game should belong to the world.
01:26And so we've made the decision together for fans to be able to watch that together without having to spend
01:31a dollar.
01:32These fan zones will serve as gathering spots for hundreds of local residents.
01:37For many, celebrating near the stadium is an available option.
01:41The train ride between New York and New Jersey to reach MetLife Stadium will cost over $100, not to mention
01:50driving.
01:51As parking will cost $300 per event.
01:54Even though many won't be able to experience the World Cup from inside the stadiums,
02:00they remain loyal to their favorite teams.
02:12The opening of the 2026 World Cup in the United States will take place this Friday, June 12th, in Los
02:21Angeles,
02:21where the national teams of the United States and Paraguay will face off.
02:26This will be a highly significant match for the United States' immigrant community.
