00:31Well, good afternoon. Welcome to the Countdown studio. We all know about crufts, Rach. We all know about crufts and
00:37those great dogs. But what about the poor old cats? Well, they've got their own crufts. It's called the Supreme
00:43Cat Show, and it kicks off tomorrow in Birmingham.
00:47And I thought, how many types of cat are there? Well, there are more than you and I possibly have
00:54thought of. You get the Siamese and the Persians, the shorthairs and all the rest of it.
00:59But anyway, there they are, and they're all being shown off. We've recently acquired another cat. And actually, it's a
01:06British short hair. We've given it. Called Sid.
01:10Lovely.
01:11And we love him to death. And, you know, he works relentlessly keeping the house free of mice. Good boy.
01:18And he's very successful. Well done.
01:20What about you? Because you're a bit of a cat person, too.
01:22I love all of them. Anything fluffy and cute. But Beastie doesn't catch mice, but she does catch moths. She
01:28can keep the house moths free and it gets a little bit of extra protein for her.
01:32May we move swiftly on?
01:34Yes, let's do.
01:34Thank you. All right. Who's back with us, Rachel? John Osmond is back. Four wins now. Well done, John. Playing
01:40really well.
01:41Playing strongly. And very relaxed.
01:43Very relaxed.
01:44A little more relaxed.
01:45Well, you're playing very well indeed. You're joined by Anne Wagstaff, a retired midwife from Minster-on-Sea on the
01:52Isle of Sheppey. Is that right?
01:53That's right. In the Thames estuary.
01:56Excellent. And in your time as a working midwife, how many babies do you think you deliver?
02:02Over 900.
02:04Wonderful career. Wonderful career. And now you're a traveller, I know, and you're a collector for the charity TWAM, which
02:14is Tools with a Mission. Tell us about this.
02:16Well, people can donate their tools, sewing machines and computers. They're all refurbished. They get sent out to different parts
02:23of Africa.
02:24And training centres train people in skills. And as soon as they've got a skill, maybe carpentry or mechanics, they
02:32give them a set of tools for that skill so they can go away and earn a living.
02:36What a great thing you're doing. Fantastic. Well, good luck to you. Good luck to you both. Big round of
02:41applause now for Anne and John.
02:48And over in the corner, Susie, of course, with musician, entrepreneur and dragon slayer. What a man. It's Levi Roots.
02:56Welcome back, Levi. Thank you so much.
03:05Thank you so much.
03:38Thank you so much.
03:41Oh.
03:43Stand by.
03:44Stand by.
03:56Thank you so much.
04:15Yes, John?
04:16Possible nine.
04:18Wow, that's a way to start.
04:20Anne?
04:20Seven.
04:21Seven.
04:22What is your seven, Anne?
04:23Strange.
04:26Now then, I think there might be a bit of a risk here, John.
04:31Notarises.
04:32Not risky at all.
04:33That's absolutely brilliant.
04:34Well done.
04:35Well done.
04:40Well, it's a good way to start.
04:4218 points.
04:43Well done.
04:43Anything else in the corner there?
04:45Yeah, we've got a nine as well, a new nine, which is assertion.
04:51Assertion.
04:52Very good.
04:52Nine, yeah.
04:53Excellent.
04:54Susie?
04:55Well, if you want a taste of something nice, if you like it, you can have a couple of
04:59Retzinas.
05:00They will give you eight as well.
05:01Yeah.
05:02It's after the third Retzina that things begin to taste rather better, I think.
05:0818 points for John.
05:09Anne, it's your letters game.
05:11Good afternoon, Rachel.
05:12Afternoon, Anne.
05:12May I start with a consonant, please?
05:15You may.

06:32Is that Vlad the impaler?
06:34Yes, but with a small i, so obviously more than one.
06:37Oh, dear.
06:38Quite a lot of them in those days.
06:39Levi, what do you think?
06:41Yeah, I've got a strange one.
06:42I've never come across this one, but Tuesday I found is pre-meow.
06:47Yes.
06:48Pre-meow for eight.
06:49Yes.
06:49Susie?
06:50Yes, pro-e-meow.
06:52It is to do with a pro-e, which is a preface or preamble to a book or a speech,
06:56so you might have the pro-e-meow section of a speech or a document, for example,
07:02so that's there for eight.
07:03Thank you very much.
07:06Now, John, your numbers game.
07:09Off we go, first of the day.
07:12May I have one large and five from anywhere else, please, Rachel?

12:18Seven, yeah.
12:19Susie?
12:19Yes, it's a family of North American plants with small leaves and inconspicuous flowers.
12:25So, presumably, it looks a bit like a weed.
12:27Yeah.

12:29Nothing to get excited about there.
12:31Yeah, and it's your numbers game.

13:57Lovely again.
13:58Well done.
13:58Well done.
14:01Well done, Anne.
14:0258 plays and 16 as we turn to Levi.
14:06Levi, yesterday you spoke about Bob Marley, the great name.
14:10I did, I did, yeah.
14:11Absolutely one of my inspiration, but I've got even a bigger name.
14:16This was in 1996.
14:19And I was looking for a bit of an inspiration, and I went to see my mom, and she had
14:24said
14:24to me that the man is coming to town.
14:26And I didn't really get what she was saying, and she said, Nelson Mandela is coming to town,
14:31to Brixton.
14:32I should go and see him.
14:33And so I went along to Brixton, just like, you know, 30,000 or so other people that was
14:38going to see the man on his birthday came to visit us in Brixton.
14:42And there I was standing in the crowd in front of the recreation center where him and Prince
14:48Charles was making a speech on the inside celebrating his birthday.
14:52And one of the security guards spotted me in the crowd, you know, half a mile away.
14:57And they were sort of looking for a few guys and gals to get together to sing Happy Birthday
15:02to Nelson Mandela.
15:04And he sort of said, well, there's Brixton's singer, because obviously I was known as a
15:08sort of musician within Brixton.
15:10He says, well, there's Levi.
15:11Get him up here and let him gather a few people to sing Happy Birthday.
15:15So I was sort of crowd surfed and pushed halfway from, you know, way down in the crowd until
15:22I finally got to the recreation.
15:24And I'm singing, Happy Birthday, Mr. President, a bit like Marilyn Monroe singing, President
15:30Kennedy, with the quivering lips of all and all.
15:34So he's sort of floating down, and I'm wondering, am I singing the right notes?
15:37What am I going to say when he comes down to it?
15:39And he sort of wafted down, and he came right in front of me, and he stood for what felt
15:43like
15:43five minutes, but really it was five seconds, sort of looked me up and down, and he says,
15:48hello, Rastaman.
15:50And the speeches that I had to make and everything that I wanted to say to him, I wanted to
15:54say
15:54that my mom had sent me to get inspiration, all that it all went off of my head.
15:59I completely forgot what to say.
16:01I was like a rabbit in a headlight, didn't know anything.
16:04For me, it was one of those moments that I wish I had said what I wanted to say, but
16:09I felt like he understood that I wanted to say something to him, because I was just like
16:14a, like I said, a rabbit in the headlights, and I couldn't get my words out.
16:17But yeah, absolutely fantastic.
16:19One of the best times of my life.
16:20And I've got to say, it beats playing football with Bob Marley.
16:24What a wonderful story.
16:30Wonderful.
16:32Thank you, Levi.
16:33So 58 plays 16.

26:00Helium.
26:01Yes.
26:02Very nice.
26:03Stricty, this one.
26:04Helium.
26:05What did the corner make of it?
26:06Levi?
26:06Yeah, we found a sort of a Spanish-y word.
26:09I'm not quite sure what the pronunciation is.
26:13Vio...
26:13Vio-whala.
26:14Vio-whala.
26:15Vio-whala, yes.
26:17V-I-H-U-E-L-A.
26:18A type of early Spanish-stringed instrument.
26:21We'll give you a seven.
26:22Well done.
26:23Well done.
26:2485 plays 22.
26:26Susie, we're back with you for your wonderful Origins of Words.
26:31And today?
26:32Today we have an email from Anthony Taylor in Finchley in North London
26:36who says his mum used to use the term floozy to describe a woman
26:40who she felt, how can I put it, failed to maintain a certain standard.
26:45Any idea where the word comes from?
26:47And it's a good question.
26:49We haven't completely nailed down the origin yet,
26:50but there are two distinct contenders.
26:52One is that it's from a dialect term floozy, with an S, meaning fluffy or soft.
26:57So the judgment implied here is that a floozy is a bit ditzy or a bit daft.
27:02And the second more plausible theory is that it riffs on an earlier word
27:06from mid-19th century America, and that was flossy.
27:09And that literally means silky, but it was used to mean saucy or showy
27:14or flashy in some kind of sassy, in other words.
27:19And I mentioned ditzy as well, all these words with a Z.
27:23Ditsy, we think, is probably a variant on dizzy,
27:26and that brings me in turn to giddy.
27:29So floozy's might be considered a bit giddy as well,
27:31but that one always surprises people because it was once a very serious word
27:35because it meant inspired or possessed by God.
27:39So it was somebody who was insane.
27:41If they were giddy, they whirled around as if they were possessed by a demon or a spirit,
27:45and that is where we get the sense of being slightly dizzy today.
27:50Excellent.
27:52Thank you, Susie.
27:55Wonderful treasure trove you are.
27:5785 to 22.
27:59Anne, it's your letters game.

29:16Anne.
29:17Rinse.
29:18Rinse.
29:19Yes, John.
29:20Unisex.
29:21Unisex.
29:22Did you have something that you were prepared to take a risk on almost?
29:26I was wondering about unfixes.
29:29Yes, surprisingly, because it does seem rather unlikely.
29:31It is there to unfix, to unfasten, detach or loosen something is to unfix it.
29:35So that would give you a seven.
29:38There we are.
29:39Now, in the corner.
29:40Yeah, we found an infuser.
29:43To seven, yeah.
29:44Might use that for your tea leaves.
29:45But yes, seven was the best we could do.
29:4891, 22.

31:09Gyration.
31:10Very nice.
31:13Now, in the corner?
31:15Yeah, gyration is a brilliant word, but we've also found negatory.
31:20Yeah.
31:21Yes, negatory.
31:22Negatory for eight.
31:23Comment, for example.
31:24Also to do with negation, obviously.
31:26So, yeah, that was their fade.

33:46I think they will.
