00:00Thank you for joining us.
00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio.
00:34Countdown, the home, the very epicentre of language, words and numbers.
00:40And there's a survey out recently about the most hated examples of corporate jargon.
00:47Rachel, this is fun.
00:48Corporate jargon.
00:49Number five on this list.
00:51I'll rush through and you nod if you hate them too or if you like them.
00:55What about no-brainer?
00:56It's a no-brainer.
00:58That's been around for ages.
00:59Yeah.
00:59What about game-changer, number four?
01:02Live with that?
01:03No, it's going down.
01:04Sort of.
01:04Number three, we're on a journey.
01:07Are we?
01:07That sounds more X-factor than business jargon.
01:11Blue Sky Thinking is number two.
01:14But number one, which Catherine uses all over time.
01:18Just touching base.
01:20Ah.
01:20Huh?
01:21Now, do you have any...
01:22I know you've got one, haven't you?
01:24Oh, yeah.
01:25Quotation marks when it's not quotations.
01:27But my personal favourite, myself, is when people like yourself talk about themselves with the self.
01:34I don't know why it's come in, but it's everywhere now.
01:36So, give me an example of that.
01:38I, myself, think that...
01:40Oh, you're right.
01:41It's annoying.
01:42It's wrong.
01:43I think it's annoying.
01:45I don't leave myself.
01:46All right.
01:46Now, who's with us?
01:48We have got Laurie Weston back again after a good win.
01:52Close run.
01:53Yeah.
01:53But, yeah, it was a good win.
01:55Now, you're joined by Bryony Gettins, who's an occupational therapist from Newport, plays the violin, and once played for the Queen.
02:04Now, how did that happen?
02:05Well, I went to a private school that was having a centenary, and the Queen came on a visit to visit the school.
02:11Mm-hmm.
02:11And I was in the orchestra at the age of 11, played the violin for the Queen.
02:15Oh, you soared away for her.
02:17Yeah.
02:17Well done.
02:18And now, you're a secretary of the Newport Orchestra.
02:21Yeah.
02:21That's pretty good.
02:22So, you're an accomplished violinist, don't you?
02:23Well, I still play, yeah.
02:26Excellent.
02:26Well, good luck today.
02:28Good luck to you both.
02:29Let's have a big round of applause for our contestants.
02:37Susie's in the corner.
02:39She always in the corner.
02:40And, in fact, we'd collapse without you.
02:42And sitting next to Susie is the wonderful Michael Whitehall, great raconteur, whose book, backing into the spotlight, there he is, look, sitting astride one of those great big metal balls, is out next week, I think.
02:56We'll talk about that a little bit later, Michael.
02:58Mm.
02:58All right.
02:59Laurie, will you take us away on this latest game?

04:26It's oxidase.
04:28Is that a word?
04:29Yes, oxidase.
04:30Very, very good.
04:30A term from biochemistry, an enzyme which promotes to transfer of a hydrogen atom to an oxygen molecule.
04:38Forming things like water.
04:40Brilliant.
04:41Well, that's very helpful.

06:27I don't know whether this is a real word,
06:29but I was...
06:31When I was taught by the Benedictine monks at Amplefall,
06:35they had that funny thing, you know,
06:37with a ball bit in the middle and the round,
06:40which I think is called taunt...tauntured.
06:43It is a taunture, yeah.
06:44So they were tauntured.
06:46They were.
06:47APPLAUSE
06:48Very good.
06:4914 plays six.
06:50Laurie on 14.

07:59Defeat, Rachel.

08:03It's all mine.
08:04This was possible if you say 9 times 10 is 90.
08:093 minus 2 is 1.
08:11Take that off for 89.
08:13Times it by 7 for 623.
08:16And take away the 5.
08:17It's one way to get there.
08:18Terrific.
08:22Terrific.

14:27You very sweetly mentioned my book, Backing Into The Spotlight.
14:33Mm.
14:33And I thought that as I was backing into the spotlight, I ought to just smart myself up a bit.
14:39So I went to this new, very she-she hairdressers.
14:43We're discussing my hair or what there is of it.
14:46And he said, I tell you what would be really nice would be for you to just have a very, very light rinse.
14:54Don't ask me why.
14:55I said okay.
14:56And I handed him my glasses.
14:59And without my glasses, I can see nothing at all.
15:03And half an hour later, he said, it looks amazing.
15:10Put the glasses back on.
15:12Did you ever see a film called Death in Venice with Dirk Bogart?
15:17It did!
15:18I mean, the dye was almost running down the sides of my face.
15:23It was jet black.
15:25It was a total and utter disaster.
15:28And I was really cross with this man.
15:31Anyway, head off to the restaurant where my lunch date, Patricia Hodge, if I could just slip in a little showbiz name there.
15:41Patricia Hodge is waiting for me.
15:44I put on a hat, obviously, for obvious reasons, a straw hat.
15:49I thought, I can't walk around the streets looking like this.
15:52So I sit down with her, with the hat on.
15:55I said, this is what's happened to me this morning, Patricia.
16:00And she said, I don't know why you're getting in such a state.
16:04I'm sure it's absolutely fine.
16:06Just take your hat off.
16:08Just get on with lunch.
16:10And I took the hat off.
16:12And she looked at me.
16:14And she went...

25:55Handier.
25:57Handier.
25:58Yeah, very good.
25:58In the dictionary.
25:59Mm-hmm.
26:00And Michael.
26:02Michael and Susie, what have you concocted?
26:04What have you squeezed out of that?
26:06What about Pinhead?
26:08Yeah.
26:09Pretty good.
26:09That's good.
26:10That's there for a seven.
26:11Head of the pin, literally.
26:13And Piranha is there as well.
26:15Piranha-ish.
26:16Pinhead, that's pretty strong stuff.
26:1847 plays 34.
26:19Laurie in the lead.
26:20Susie.
26:21Michael, you'll love this.
26:23It's Susie's origins of words.
26:25Mm-hmm.
26:27Well, I had an email in from Geoffrey Davies,
26:30so thank you to Geoffrey,
26:30who asks, where does the term argy-bargy come from?
26:34I get the bargy bit, but why argy?
26:37And it's a good question.
26:38And it's an example of what linguists call,
26:40I mentioned it on the show before,
26:41a reduplicative compound.
26:44It's a combination of words that echo each other,
26:46that rhyme in some way,
26:47and often one of those words has very little inherent sense,
26:50and it's simply added on to provide a bit of a sound effect,
26:53if you like.
26:54And English is absolutely full of concoctions like this.
26:57Higgledy-piggledy, shilly-shally,
26:59health-to-skill-to-hugger-mugger,
27:01roly-poly, hoity-toity.
27:03Hoity-toity is a good one,
27:04because to hoit was an old verb for indulging in riotous mirth.
27:08It's a great definition in the dictionary,
27:10which I quite like.
27:11But back to argy-bargy,
27:13it's actually the argy element that carries the sense of the word,
27:16not the bargy, as Geoffrey thought.
27:18It's a variation on argy,
27:20which was a Scottish dialect form of argue,
27:23and has been around since the 16th century.
27:26And to argle-bargle became a sort of joking reference, really,
27:29to bandying words in a very stubborn, obstinate argument over something.
27:33And the bargle was there simply to add a rhyming element,
27:36but perhaps with that element of sort of pushing and shoving
27:38and barging somebody around,
27:41whether literally or metaphorically.
27:43But it all goes back to argle-bargle,
27:45which I almost like better than argy-bargy.
27:47Very good.
27:5447 plays, 34.
27:56Laurie in the lead.
27:57And Bryony.

29:27There is neutrify in there for seven to provide with nourishment.
29:31Neutrify.
29:32Neutrify, thank you.

31:04Steams. Sesame as well is there for six.
31:06All right. 59 plays 46.

31:13No gamble for the last one?
31:15No.
31:15Just one large and five small and hoping for the crucial.
31:19We shall see.
31:20The last numbers game of the day is five, one, three, eight.
31:26Another eight and 25.
31:28And the target? 268.
31:31Two, six, eight.

32:09No, Noah.
32:10You're nowhere.
32:11Off we go, then.
32:13So I said 8 plus 3 is 11.
32:16Yep.
32:17Multiply that by 25.
32:20275.
32:218 plus 5 is 13, and took it off.
32:26So the other 8 plus 5, 13, and 262.
32:31There we go.
32:32A little bit of drift, a little bit of drift,
32:35but it takes Bryony to within 8 points.
32:38Let's deal with this 268 first, though.
32:40Rachel?
32:41There were a couple of ways.
32:43If you stick with Bryony's method and then say 8 minus 1 is 7,
32:46take that away and you get 268.
32:49There you go.
32:49Thank you very much.
32:51Thank you, Rachel.
32:53So we go in to what amounts to a crucial countdown conundrum.
33:00Good luck to you both.
33:01Good luck to you both.
33:02Fingers on buzzers.
