00:03this is what is known as the Greenland shark it's not only one of the largest shark species on the
00:09planet often growing up to 23 feet long but it's also one of the longest living vertebrates known
00:14as well sometimes living for hundreds of years in fact experts believe they don't even reach
00:19sexual maturity until age 150 a recently biologist discovered one of these sharks which usually makes
00:26their home in the cold arctic and north atlantic in the caribbean the researchers were monitoring
00:31tiger shark activity just off the coast of belize but instead one of their lines caught what they
00:36describe as a quote very slow-moving sluggish creature under the surface of the water it looked
00:41like something that would exist in prehistoric times the researchers say the coral reef they
00:46were studying goes down to depths nearing two miles something more akin to the greenland shark's natural
00:51habitat the sharks which can sometimes live up to 500 years live in extremely deep areas moving
00:56slowly as they slowly age now scientists are keen to figure out whether the one they discovered in
01:01the tropics grew up there or simply migrated because if it's the former it raises the question where else
01:07in the vast deep of earth's oceans could these aged sharks be found
