00:00The Trump White House has revealed some information that could affect the race for mayor of Los Angeles.
00:06The fraud task force at the White House announced that it would be cutting off funding to something called the
00:11Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, or LAHSA.
00:16It said that the LAHSA was suspected of mismanagement and fraud and waste, and it wouldn't be getting another penny
00:22of federal dollars until an investigation could be completed.
00:26Now, this is actually a familiar story to Angelenos because the LAHSA has been the subject of much controversy locally.
00:34It was found in a 2025 audit to be unable to account for some billions of dollars that had flowed
00:40through its coffers.
00:41No one was even sure if the money had been spent on services to homeless people.
00:45And its CEO resigned after she was found to have given a contract to another organization where her husband was
00:52a senior official, a glaring conflict of interest.
00:54So, the Trump administration is cutting off the funds.
00:57About a billion dollars has flowed from federal taxpayers to LAHSA since 2021.
01:03But this could affect the race for mayor, because one of the two final candidates in the general election, Nitya
01:09Raman, who surged past Spencer Pratt in the primary to take second place,
01:14is closely associated with homeless services and homeless policy.
01:18And there's some speculation that the Trump announcement could have something to do with her sudden second place finish.
01:24On the other hand, incumbent mayor Karen Bass has presided over this era of waste, fraud, and abuse.
01:30And she's also in the firing line when the federal government starts digging up the fraud at LAHSA.
