00:00Tiger has done it a lot too right over the years you see him practicing with that a lot with
00:04that
00:04bladed wedge putting yeah well Tiger and I you know we obviously played a decent amount of college
00:09golf against one another and so we're both of the same vintage so he's the same thing that there's
00:15another shot that that I never see players play around the greens too these days that I that I
00:21saw that would have worked really well last week at Memorial and also at at Colonial the week before
00:27that I just don't see guys playing around the greens anymore just because I don't think anybody
00:31teaches it but it's a it's it's a it was taught to me by same pro up at up at
00:37Crystal Springs who was a
00:39big Paul Runyon fan an old school fan and Paul Runyon was you know I think it was his nickname
00:45was Little Poison and he was he was he was a short game genius really before well before all the
00:52short
00:52game geniuses and gurus but he would take a wedge or a or a or a putter it's really kind
00:57of a show
00:57me it's hard to describe it but he would take a wedge of any kind put it like off of
01:03his back
01:03right foot okay way back and he'd get it get the toe into the ground where the heels way off
01:10the
01:10ground and then he'd take his putting grip you'd take your putting grip reverse overlap putting grip
01:14and you'd literally make a putting stroke but with it way back in the stance it'd come off kind
01:18of knuckly but it comes out of those those deep bermuda lies and those kind of thick like where
01:24I grew up with a lot of poanna and rye and lots of different mixture of grasses in northern California
01:29you could just it would come off rolling like a putt it would just pop out and roll like a
01:34putt the rest
01:34of the way it was great shot to have I'd like to see more guys play that shot quite honestly
01:39it's the anti-chunk Charlie is what he's talking about like this is how you know if you got green
01:44to
01:44work with here putting that toe in the ground and and what he's talking about getting it rolling
01:48I think it's a little bit more of a you know into out motion because you got it so far
01:53back
01:54uh it's gonna help get that you know into out motion it's a little bit of a hook shot almost
01:59but with a putting stroke and that gets that ball just humming on the ground but but have you ever
02:03seen you ever seen like you know the lies I'm talking about smiley where you get into that kind of
02:08that step cut right off the fringe and it's sitting down and you're like but you don't have a lot
02:13of
02:13green to work with and you're sitting well if I get this too much I could duff it and it
02:17goes on
02:17the green by a yard or I could or I'm gonna gun this thing right by the hole this shot
02:22kind of
02:22always always was good for me or in those situations are you trying to hit it off of the
02:28toe if you're standing it up like that with the heel I'm literally trying to I'm literally trying
02:31to kill it when you can do it I think yeah that's I'm literally trying to hit it on the
02:35toe and
02:36what it does it kills the momentum and it kind of it comes out dead and if you practice it
02:40enough
02:40I mean I've chipped in with it more than a few times and you know from high school all the
02:45way
02:46through my professional career but just because it it works so well add it to the smiley show
02:49short game library yeah another shot we have here now I think so and where I see it uh where
02:56I
02:56think it really works you see it all the time on the pga tour uh maybe not quite as much
03:01at your
03:02you know golf course that you play at home but first cuts that we've seen recently are a little bit
03:07on
03:07the on the longer side but still sticky so like they'll sit down and just enough to where you feel
03:12like a 60 degree feels if you play it shallow that you have to take a bigger swing than you
03:19want to
03:19and then if you put it kind of back in your stance it feels like when you hit the ball
03:23it's going to
03:24come out with too much and so you're kind of in this in-between zone of how do I just
03:29get this ball
03:29I just need to get it rolling and not screw up and duff it or hit it too hard that's
03:34exactly right
03:34and I think that this shot uh you know it's funny I I want to I want to come in
03:39but I I don't have
03:40the time you know you don't have the time on the ground to describe certain things but but I'd love
03:44to say you're smiling a couple times this last week when when you went on your like this is would
03:50really the Paul Runyon shot would work perfectly here the guy right that would have thrown me for
03:55a loop Kurt would have been like you don't know Paul Runyon I'm like help me help educate me
04:00you
