00:00And at the age of 14, I wrote a lyric that went,
00:02I'm addicted to crack, motherfucker.
00:04Yeah.
00:05But I didn't know what crack was.
00:07I'd heard it on a Baby Shambles record,
00:10and I thought, that sounds great.
00:18What did you steal?
00:20Secrets.
00:23People have a right to know the truth.
00:27Hi, I'm Alex from NME,
00:28and today I'm joined by two of our most talented rising actors.
00:31It's Josh O'Connor and Eve Hewson.
00:33Hey.
00:34How are you doing?
00:35Most talented rising actors.
00:36It's like, say it again.
00:39Say it loud, say it proud.
00:41But first of all, of course, we're here to talk about Disclosure Day,
00:43which I believe is your first time working with Steven Spielberg, Josh,
00:47and your second time, Eve.
00:49That's right.
00:49Could you each give me a notable note that he gave you on set?
00:53Well, I've got a funny one, which was an accidental note,
00:56where we were messaging one night about a scene that was coming up
00:59two weeks in advance, which often would happen.
01:01We'd talk about things ahead of time.
01:04And he was like, leave me alone, Josh.
01:05Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:06And I was like, it's perfect.
01:07No, but it's close.
01:09We were talking about a scene where Daniel's emotions are so present,
01:14but he doesn't allow them.
01:16Or I felt like, I was questioning, does he allow them to come through?
01:20And we were going back and forth.
01:21And then just before I was going to bed, I get this text saying,
01:25the door is on the latch, just push.
01:28And I was like, wow, that's like perfect.
01:31Because it's like his emotions are there, they're just there.
01:33And he just pushed, just let them come out.
01:36So the next day I was like, Stephen, that was so inspired.
01:39Thank you so much.
01:40And he looked so confused.
01:41And he went and checked his phone.
01:42And that message was for his wife.
01:45And it was a very directional, the door is on the latch, just push.
01:49I'm going to bed.
01:51But it worked.
01:52So it was an accidental, perfect bit of direction.
01:54Didn't you get him a t-shirt at the end?
01:56With that on it, yeah.
01:57Oh, that's cool.
01:58He's so genius, though.
02:00He's genius, even when he's not trying to be.
02:01Yeah, exactly.
02:02What about you?
02:03Well, he had a different approach with me.
02:05Well, he was always trying to get me to cry, remember?
02:08There was like every scene, every scene he'd be like,
02:11I think Jane should cry.
02:13And I was like, oh, God, I didn't think I was going to go there today.
02:17It's not on the page, Stephen.
02:19Every time I'd see him come, I'm like, oh, no.
02:22And he'd be like, yep, yep, it's happening.
02:23But he was always like really so kind and would sort of like talk me through it.
02:29Remember, there was one day where I had to cry and I had a moment in front of the camera
02:36and you gave me a hug, remember?
02:39And he had asked Josh, like, just before take, will you just give her a hug?
02:44And it was like he knew that I just needed a moment to relax and de-stress.
02:49And then it just made me cry.
02:51The downside to that is then when I hugged Eve, I started crying.
02:56I was like, oh, God.
02:58There is something that he knows actors so well.
03:01Yeah.
03:02There's just that he has an intuition, I think, about people.
03:06And, you know, sometimes you just need a little bit of like human touch
03:10to just get you there.
03:11And it just got me there.
03:12And he goes, action.
03:14Yeah, now I know if you ever hug Eve, she just bursts into it.
03:17It's crazy.
03:19Another Disclosure Day related question.
03:22Obviously, there's a fair bit of extraterrestrial activity around this film.
03:26What I wanted to ask, though, was have either of you ever had any kind of personal experiences
03:32with sort of that kind of thing?
03:35You know what?
03:36I had a false alarm one a few years ago.
03:41So I was camping with my brothers and my best pals for a birthday of mine.
03:46And it was quite late at night and we were quite remote.
03:50And we were looking up at the sky and we saw maybe six stars perfectly distanced moving
03:57straight up across the sky like this.
04:02And we freaked.
04:04And then the next day we were looking up and it was the Tesla Starlink.
04:08But it was the first time I'd ever seen it.
04:10And if you ever see it, it's like, this is it.
04:13Disclosure Day is upon us.
04:15I have never had any kind of alien experience.
04:19I've never been visited by a ghost.
04:22I've never had any kind of supernatural stuff go on.
04:25You've got all that to look forward to.
04:27I know.
04:27One day.
04:28Paul Meskell.
04:29He told a brilliant story to us once about when he was a kid with his brother in some
04:33hotel in Ireland.
04:34I can't remember.
04:35Like furniture flying across the room or stuff like that.
04:37Oh, what?
04:38Yeah.
04:38Is that right?
04:39Yeah.
04:40Was he joking?
04:41I don't think so.
04:42Oh, I should laugh.
04:43Sorry.
04:44Yeah, I'll ask.
04:45Do you think he made it up?
04:46No, I don't think he...
04:47If he said it, he wouldn't have been making it up.
04:50Oh.
04:50I don't know why I laughed.
04:51There's something about you saying him and he's a friend instead of imagining him.
04:55The two of them together are like this beautiful little romance.
04:58Like, you guys went for dinner every Sunday night when we were filming.
05:02Oh, we did.
05:03I'm like, what are you doing this weekend, Josh?
05:04Oh, me and Paul just going for dinner.
05:06We'll get to the bottom of it.
05:08What am I doing?
05:09What am I doing?
05:10What am I doing?
05:10What am I doing?
05:15This semi-nine-year cover-up of the truth has to end.
05:22And I've got a question for you next, Josh.
05:24Because you, I think, unwittingly made a grave error in a recent interview, not knowing that
05:29you were going to be interviewed by us.
05:31Can you think of what that was, maybe?
05:32I made an enemy with someone.
05:34No.
05:35You revealed that you were in a band during school.
05:38Oh, disaster.
05:38Called Orange Output.
05:40Yeah.
05:40Now, I don't think this is embarrassing, but when you were telling the story...
05:43If you heard our music, you would.
05:44No, I'm joking.
05:45Could you tell the enemy readers who might be interested, will be interested, what that entailed?
05:50So, I grew up in a place called Cheltenham Spa.
05:54I grew up in a perfectly lovely household, lovely parents, and two very kind brothers
05:59with lovely people around me.
06:02And at the age of 14, I wrote a lyric that went,
06:04I'm addicted to crack, motherfucker.
06:06Yeah.
06:07But I didn't know what crack was.
06:10I'd heard it on a Baby Shambles record, and I thought, that sounds great.
06:16And so I wrote that.
06:17I also wrote a lyric that went, sex and drugs and rock and roll, kids walk past, but walk
06:24too slow.
06:26Wow.
06:27Profound.
06:28Profound.
06:28And something that annoys most of us, right?
06:31Walk quicker.
06:33Yeah.
06:34And also sex, drugs, and rock and roll.
06:35You, as a rock star, is a really funny homie.
06:40Were you in any embarrassing bands at school, maybe?
06:43I was in bands, but I wasn't in an embarrassing band.
06:46That's not embarrassing.
06:47They're really cool bands.
06:48I'm sorry.
06:49I think I told you about my band, and I may have showed you a video of my performance.
06:52You did.
06:54It's out there somewhere.
06:56Come on, tell us more about that.
06:57Yes, yes.
06:57I was in a band called Ten Past Two, which was the time that I got out of primary school,
07:01with my best friend, Serka Richardson, who actually is a really successful singer-songwriter
07:07now.
07:07So, I was on to something.
07:09I thought you were going to say, like, that's the time I got out of prison or something.
07:12Ten past two.
07:12Ten past two is when we're released from school.
07:15That's cool.
07:16It's like, it means freedom, you know?
07:18It means, like, you know, school's out, you know?
07:21Anyway.
07:22Secondary school or primary?
07:23Primary school.
07:24So, freedom for, like, the summer, and then you're on to the next bit.
07:27Yeah.
07:28It's all right.
07:29No, listen.
07:30Orange output.
07:31Okay, so anyway, we had a song called She Only Wants You For Your Money, and that was
07:36our big hit.
07:36And then I had a birthday party recently, like a few years ago.
07:39Oh, this is the one I was thinking of.
07:40And we had, everybody had to come.
07:43It was in my backyard.
07:44It was, like, when COVID opened up, and you could have, like, 100 people or, like, 50 people
07:48or whatever it is.
07:50So, all the festivals closed.
07:52So, instead, I threw my own festival, and everyone had to come dressed as their favorite
07:56rock star or, like, front person from a band or a festival.
08:02It was good.
08:02I was Bjork.
08:03My friend came dressed as Ozzy Osbourne, circa, who was the other duo in, in, um...
08:09Two people who have never met Bjork.
08:10Ten past two.
08:11And she got up to do a few songs.
08:13So, we had, we have loads of artist friends.
08:15So, we had everybody perform.
08:17And she got up and surprised me and was like, all right, Eve, we're getting the band,
08:21band, back together, get up here.
08:23And we did a rendition of She Only Wants It For Your Money.
08:27You remembered it?
08:28It's, yeah, and it's...
08:29It's incredible.
08:30It's incredible.
08:31It is.
08:31You've seen it.
08:32You've seen the video.
08:33I would love to talk to you and find out more about this, but unfortunately, I have to
08:36go.
08:36But thanks so much, James.
08:37Thanks very much.
08:53Disclosure Day.
08:54Disclosure Day.
