00:00Oh my god.
00:01One week after primary election day, Republican Steve Hilton has officially finished in second
00:06place in the race for...
00:08Second place.
00:09Damn, boy.
00:10This sets the stage for a traditional Democrat versus Republican contest.
00:15Yes.
00:16That Democrat Javier Becerra has already taken the top spot.
00:19Yes.
00:20Democrat taken the top spot tonight.
00:22Kerman spoke to the experts about what this campaign might look like.
00:27He joins us now live from the newsroom with more.
00:31Dan.
00:31Well, Vicki and Catherine, it wasn't that many months ago when there was talk that we could
00:35have two Republicans facing off in the runoff for governor.
00:38Yes, two Republicans are facing off in the runoff for governor, but now a Democrat is
00:43in the second place.
00:44But as it turns out, it will be a Democrat versus a Republican, as you say, and already
00:49both sides are giving us a glimpse of what's to come during the next five months.
00:53Yes, next five months are going to be the best and the competitive ones.
00:58At a campaign event in Southern California Tuesday, Republican Steve Hilton gave a preview
01:03of what a Steve Hilton, Javier Becerra runoff will look like.
01:07Yes.
01:08Californians will have a real choice for change in November, whether they want to keep going
01:13with the policies that have brought us to the highest poverty rate, the highest unemployment rate.
01:19everything is high poverty rate, unemployment rate, everything.
01:23The highest cost of living in the country where they want more of that with Javier Becerra
01:27or whether they want to go in a new direction.
01:29Yes, Javier Becerra doing everything wrong.
01:32He said six percent of Californians are not happy with the direction of the state.
01:37They want to vote for change.
01:40And so Steve Hilton certainly represents change.
01:44Yes, that's what they said. Change is coming, change is coming.
01:48Observers believe Steve Hilton's message of change will resonate with some Californians.
01:53Steve Hilton really doesn't have a chance of winning, even if that argument resonates with folks.
01:58Some say it will only go so far in a state dominated by Democrats.
02:02Yes, they're saying nah nah, he's not gonna win and la la la, but I don't know.
02:06We are in an era of heightened partisanship. There's a lot of concern among most Californians
02:14about Democrats versus Republicans, the direction that Republicans want to go.
02:18And so while it is probably true that a lot of Californians
02:21All right, whatever you say ma'am. All right, ma'am. Okay.
02:26Would like some change and I think that's part of the reason Tom Steyer did so well.
02:30Yeah.
02:31They're not willing to cross party lines for it.
02:33The California dream is still alive and under my watch, I guarantee we're gonna revive it even more.
02:37Democrat Javier Becerra, who was the top vote getter in the primary.
02:41Yes, Javier Becerra.
02:43Is moving full steam ahead and didn't shy away Tuesday from reminding people
02:48Hilton was endorsed by President Donald Trump.
02:51Donald Trump, who is again claiming that the election in California was fraudulent.
02:58Yes, Republic versus Democrats are all right now.
03:02That's who's endorsing Steve Hilton.
03:04Oh, yeah, man. What is, what is, what is, what he wills. Fraudulent elections are happening.
03:09That's who Steve Hilton is aligning himself with.
03:12Is that what we would expect of the next governor?
03:14No, we're not expecting that thing.
03:16We're gonna see Becerra leaning into that and talking about how if he wins in November,
03:21he's gonna push back against the president.
03:23Political analysts say the president could play a reoccurring role in both campaigns.
03:28Okay, in both campaigns, reoccurring roles.
03:31President himself, I don't think so.
03:34Don't find.
03:34Just like your run from Ghana again.
03:36Steve Hilton, reading with President Trump, endorsed me from day to day.
03:41But he can blunt some of the criticism by saying, I'm here to fix things.
03:46He's willing to work with me.
03:48If Becerra wants to run against Trump, that's fine.
03:50But I'm here to fix California.
03:53Yes.
03:54Fix California.
03:55I mean, I really don't matter these things at all.
03:58Yeah, I'm gonna vote it, but man, I just want change.
04:03Either you do it or someone else.
04:05I don't care.
04:07I just want the change.
04:09Now, political analysts say both Hilton and Becerra can both reach out to voters who
04:14want change.
04:14But they say Becerra must get Democrats excited about his campaign if he is to win.
04:20So they turn out.
04:21Yeah, true.
04:22Man, you are saying truth.
04:25But let's see what they do, what's happening.
04:28At the polls in November, live in the newsroom, Dan Kerman, Kron 4 News.
04:32Dan, thank you.
04:34And Governor Newsom has already come out to endorse Javier Becerra.
04:37Okay, Newsom.
04:38The Governor releasing a statement saying in part, quote, now it's time for Democrats to
04:42unite and win in November.
04:44Oh, Governor, you think so?
04:46I'm proud to support Javier as our nominee for Governor.
04:49He'll stand up to Donald Trump.
04:51Oh, Trumpy.
04:53Defend our families and keep California.
04:54Yeah, bro.
04:55Yeah.
