00:00President Trump campaigned on a promise that became a MAGA rallying cry.
00:04No new wars.
00:06This week, when asked about the war his administration is fighting in Iran,
00:09he said he never made that promise at all.
00:11So what's really going on here?
00:13Here's what's happening.
00:14The phrase goes back years.
00:15In his 2021 farewell address,
00:17Trump called himself the first president in decades to not start new wars.
00:21I am especially proud to be the first president in decades
00:24who has started no new wars.
00:27On his 2024 re-election night,
00:30he told supporters he would stop wars, not start them.
00:33But we had no wars.
00:34They said he will start a war.
00:36I'm not going to start a war.
00:37I'm going to stop wars.
00:38That message became a defining part of his campaign.
00:41Then on February 28th, the U.S. launched strikes on Iran,
00:44beginning a conflict that has continued through a fragile ceasefire
00:47that both sides keep violating.
00:49In an interview that aired Sunday on NBC's Meet the Press,
00:52moderator Kristen Welker pressed Trump on whether the war broke his pledge.
00:56What changed?
00:57Because you insisted no new wars.
01:00First of all, I didn't guarantee no war.
01:03Trump's defense leaned on time and scale.
01:06You were in Vietnam for 19 years and you're telling me about three months.
01:09He says the conflict is not an endless war and has only been going on for three months.
01:14But the conflict is still unfolding.
01:16This week after an American military helicopter was shot down,
01:19Trump ordered new strikes and posted that Iran would now pay the price for stalling on a deal.
01:23Iran's Revolutionary Guard said it would hit U.S. bases across the region in response
01:28and warned that there are more strikes to come.
01:30But there's also a...
