00:00First of all, I'm the biggest moron of all time
00:03because I told you that the San Francisco Giants
00:06were getting canned at Oracle Park today.
00:09They were down 9-2.
00:12Ladies and gentlemen, moments after we just had
00:15a lengthy Bryce Eldridge conversation,
00:18Bryce Eldridge has just hit a walk-off,
00:22bottom of the ninth, grand slam
00:25to defeat the Washington Nationals 11-10.
00:31Bryce Eldridge.
00:32Kaboom!
00:33There's one place to talk about this right now,
00:36and it's right here.
00:38888-957-9570.
00:40I don't even give a crap that there's a big old
00:43Sunnyside egg on my face for saying that this game
00:46was over a half hour ago.
00:47More like an omelet.
00:48The Giants have erased a seven-run deficit.
00:52They score five in the bottom of the ninth.
00:56Bryce Eldridge, 2-0 pitch with the bases
00:59loaded, plopped it up on top of the arcade
01:02in right field, right when the whole building
01:05was thinking that that's exactly what he would do.
01:09Just enough to get it on top of the green tin roof.
01:13Just enough.
01:13And he hit it so high that there was so much anticipation.
01:17You were thinking, at worst, that's a sack fly.
01:20And then it kept carrying.
01:21You're thinking, maybe off the bricks.
01:22And then it kept carrying, soaring through the afternoon sky
01:26at third and king.
01:27And then it clangs off the green roof.
01:30And oh my goodness, second win after trailing by eight or more runs
01:35entering the eighth since 1901.
01:38This is a, I'm not saying it's a season saver
01:40or a job saver, but this is one of the greatest
01:44regular season games that you can possibly remember
01:47down there at Oracle Park.
01:48I want you to get out a big old syringe
01:51and give yourself a shot of this
01:53because here's what it sounded like on NBC Sports Bay Area.
01:58High drive.
02:03Right side.
02:12I feel so good for Krook and Kaip.
02:20They deserve that moment so badly.
02:23And I just want to, there's so many things to go through right now.
02:28I want to bring everybody into the room.
02:30So our group, our thread, you, me, Mark Grandy, Stephen Rizzotto,
02:37the man we call pasta.
02:39Two nights ago, he texted the thread,
02:42and everybody knows how well Bryce Eldridge is playing.
02:45But he says, you know what?
02:47We're still kind of waiting for the welcome to the bigs moment.
02:51Yeah.
02:52And I was like, because sometimes the welcome to the bigs moment
02:54means when the bigs kind of shuts you down.
02:56Like, hey, Rook, welcome to the bigs.
02:59This is what a curveball looks like in the show.
03:02And I was like, so do you mean, do you mean that?
03:05Or do you mean like his I'm here moment?
03:08And he goes, no, I'm talking about that.
03:10The I'm here moment.
03:12So then we go to, here comes Monday night's game.
03:17And Bryce Eldridge steps up in a 1-1 tie, bottom of the eighth inning.
03:21And he slices that two-strike double right down the left field line.
03:25Yep.
03:25And I said, pasta?
03:27Is that it?
03:28Was that it?
03:29And he was like, that might have been it.
03:31And then the Giants proceed to lose the baseball game.
03:34And Bryce ends up being the last batter of the game.
03:37And he strikes out to end the game.
03:39And the ball game's over.
03:42So then we're in a commercial break about five minutes ago.
03:48The Giants are rallying.
03:49There's two men on, nobody out, and they're down 10-7.
03:54Jung-Hoo Lee at the plate.
03:55And I said, pasta?
03:57You see what's building here, don't you?
03:59Yep.
04:00You see where we're going?
04:01He's going to have his opportunity to really have that moment.
04:06Jung-Hoo Lee moments later does exactly what he does on every single at-bat.
04:12Yeah.
04:13Which is get a hit.
04:14They hold Chappie at third to load him.
04:16And you're thinking, all right, nobody out.
04:19Bryce is up.
04:20And what do the Giants do every single time the bases are loaded this year?
04:25To a double play.
04:27No.
04:28No.
04:28Grand slam, Cifro.
04:29Yeah, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, San Francisco.
04:32And so here comes Bryce and the whole building.
04:37Shout out to those of you who stayed.
04:39And those of you who went tarps off, which were many of you.
04:42Well, that was.
04:43The tarps were off.
04:44I think that those two things were married because the tarps off people are drunk,
04:48and that's who stays.
04:49But the streets of San Francisco today are no doubt filled with people who left.
04:55You can tell by looking at the plate.
04:56They were down 9-2.
04:58I don't blame them.
04:58Right.
04:59I don't blame them.
05:00And even when they got down 9-5, you were in the bathroom, and you come back,
05:03and I said, the sack, RBI.
05:05And you looked at me like, you rolled your eyes.
05:08Yeah, right.
05:08And you're like, take a chance at victory out of your mouth.
05:11And I was doing it just to kind of needle you.
05:13And it worked.
05:14But they were creeping back.
05:15But so then here he comes to the plate.
05:17It's ball one.
05:18It's ball two.
05:19And we're all sitting here going, dude, if he does it, if he does it.
05:23And then he did it.
05:26And guys, by the way, I don't know if he's going to want to do it, but I think among
05:32those people who were at the game today and didn't stay might be one of, you'll all be
05:38able to guess.
05:39One of the other four hosts at our station, I think, is one of those people.
05:44Can you confirm that he left?
05:47I have it on fairly good authority.
05:50But I don't blame him.
05:51He's got his little guy there.
05:52It's 90 degrees out there.
05:54You know what I mean?
05:55Sunscreen.
05:56That's always a factor.
05:57Sunscreen, and it's 9 to 2.
05:59And he's probably like, yeah.
06:01You know, he's like, I'm on the air in four hours.
06:03And having a toddler, like, if you don't get a nap in, it probably is going sideways.
06:07Anyways, and never any judgment on leaving early.
06:10I left to pick at the stick early.
06:12I heard it from the candlestick dirt lot and thought, huh, probably should have stayed for
06:17that one.
06:19Wow.
06:21Wow.
06:22Hey, Pasta, I think that was his welcome to the bigs moment, don't you?
06:28I think that was it, Willard.
06:29I think he's in the big leagues now.
06:32Whoa.
06:34Whoa.
06:34They got to trade Rafi Downers.
06:36I'm sorry.
06:38And by the way, guys, on the broadcast, Mike Kruko said that if they came back in this
06:42game, he would take his shirt off.
06:44And?
06:45I don't think he took his shirt off.
06:47Well, there's always Friday.
06:49You know, good thing the Giants have an off day tomorrow.
06:52Kruko can hope everybody forgets what he said.
06:54Yeah.
06:54And did he say he'd take it off, like, during the broadcast or when he took his next shower?
06:59Because I'd imagine the shirt comes off then anyway.
07:01I think the implication, yeah, was that he was going to go tarps off.
07:04Let me know if you guys can, at some point, find the Nationals broadcast of said walk-off,
07:10including a friend of the program, Kevin Franzen, on the call.
07:13First win of the year when trailing after six innings.
07:18And in this particular case, they were trailing by seven.
07:22Buddy Kennedy was getting loose.
07:24It was going to be one of those games where your position player gets to pitch.
07:28Oh, my God.
07:29Do you guys want to hear a stat real quick?
07:31Yes.
07:32Bryce Eldridge.
07:33This is according to Alex Pavlovich, front of the show.
07:36Bryce Eldridge is the youngest player in Major League Baseball history to hit a walk-off Grand Slam.
07:42The previous youngest was Roberto Clemente.
07:46Oh!
07:47Wow.
07:49Dude, listen.
07:50Today is about letting yourself dream a little bit.
07:55I don't want anybody, don't rain on anyone's parade.
08:00Don't wet blanket.
08:02You know what I mean?
08:02That's just one game.
08:04I don't want to hear, like, I'll stop short of the Wemben Yamatok.
08:08He's going to be the greatest player of all time.
08:10I'll stop short of that, but, like, this dude is that dude.
08:18And we Giants fans deserve this.
08:22We've been waiting for this.
08:24This moment is for the Christian Arroyos and the Marco Lucianos and the Luis Matos's
08:32and all of the people that we have been begging to come up and be awesome.
08:38And we've been told that they're going to be awesome.
08:41And then they're just not.
08:4421 years old.
08:46And he is literally already the best player on this team.
08:51I mean, shout out Matt Chapman, who had two home runs.
08:55And a double.
08:55Rafi Devers was part of a back-to-back that, you know, you're down 9-2 and you're thinking,
09:00great, empty Calvary home run.
09:02And then you hit another one.
09:04And then Devers falls with one.
09:05And even when you crept all the way closer, I think you were down 9-6.
09:09Then the bullpen goes out and gives up a run to make it 10-6.
09:12And you're thinking, of course.
09:13Just when you think they might have a chance to sneak back, you give up another run.
09:18And then they answer with five in the bottom half to walk off the Nats 11-10.
09:23There's so many people.
09:24Like, Bryce Eldridge is going to get all of the love.
09:28But quite frankly, I mean, don't forget Jung-Hoo Lee.
09:32He gets a hit every single time he comes to the plate.
09:35Multiple hits again today and extended the hitting streak to 18.
09:41I'd have to look and even see, like, the list of some of the relievers who went in.
09:46Some of whom kept the Nationals at bay.
09:48Some of them did not.
09:49Carson Seymour gave up four earned in one in the third.
09:52Yep.
09:53And San Martin, welcome to the team.
09:56He gets the win.
09:57He went two innings.
09:58He gave up two hits and an earned run.
10:00Yeah, he gave up a run.
10:01But just one, I mean, Robbie Ray gave up five, including a home run, seven hits.
10:06And he was not particularly sharp.
10:08And then Carson Seymour came in and kind of felt like they were just going to let him go
10:12and just, you know, stretch it out and eat the remainder of it.
10:15But San Martin makes his debut and gets a win in his first time out of the pen.
10:20Luis Sarai started this whole inning with a double.
10:23Two more hits for him today.
10:24You mentioned Susak.
10:26He went two for four today.
10:28Chapman, not just the two homers.
10:30He was four for five.
10:32Matt Chapman is legitimately red hot.
10:34His average is up to 262.
10:36It was a week ago that we were sitting here with our face in our hands going,
10:41we got to get Matt Chapman the hell out of town.
10:44He'd been probably one of the hottest hitters in baseball since we said it.
10:48So, you know, like, what is a week and a half ago, he's like, I'm getting death threats.
10:52And he's hit like six homers since then.
10:55He hasn't six homers since then.
10:57Unbelievable.
10:58And good on him.
10:59Good on him.
11:01Yep.
11:01That's awesome.
11:02That is absolutely awesome.
11:04Look, they're 13 under 500.
11:06It's kind of whatever.
11:08But give them something for being a group that, like, still goes out and plays their ass off
11:15to a level where they can rally from a nine to two deficit, even to give the kid a chance
11:21at a moment like that.
11:22And that is an unforgettable moment for him and for anybody who stayed in that ballpark to watch this game.
11:29No doubt.
11:30I mean, wow.
11:31First Grand Slam of his career.
11:33First walk off.
11:34And as pasta shared, the stat he got from, I guess, Alex Pavlovich, youngest ever to hit a walk off
11:40Grand Slam in that spot.
11:43And just incredible.
11:44And I'm happy that we got a chance to at least watch it here while on the air and kind
11:50of paying attention.
11:51I'm trying to find the win percentage for Washington.
11:55Oh, it had to be a 99.9, right?
11:58For sure.
11:58When it was 9-2 in the 7th or 8th inning?
12:0110-6 heading to the bottom of the 9th, even.
12:04Yep, yep.
12:04You're listening to 95.7 The Game, KGMZ FM and HZ1 San Francisco and Odyssey Sports Station.
12:09And the home of the Golden State Warriors and Valkyries is always live on the free Odyssey app
12:12and coming to you live from the Laughing Monk Studios.
12:16Let's talk Giants.
12:17888-957-9570 is the number.
12:21Here's Eldridge on the walk-off granny.
12:23It was amazing.
12:26I just want to give all glory to God because the other night I was very frustrated.
12:29I got a similar at-bat in the first game of the series, big time, and I didn't come through.
12:36And I've been sleeping on it.
12:37And it's just funny how that works.
12:39I get another opportunity and I pulled through.
12:41Sorry, I'm out of breath still.
12:43Dude, what a G.
12:44Because the fact that he lost sleep over Monday's strikeout at the end of the game,
12:50that hurts my heart because he already got what I considered the game-winning hit.
12:54He came up in the eighth of a 1-1 tie and he got the extra base hit and scored
12:59a run
12:59and took a 2-1 lead.
13:01Like, dude, you did it.
13:02You did it and the bullpen let you down.
13:05And he's over here thinking he let them down.
13:07Because he had the strikeout and, I mean, fastball was right there up in his happy zone
13:11and he swung right through it.
13:13Looking at some of the percentages, Chapman homers in the bottom of the eighth
13:16to cut it to 9-2.
13:18And at that moment, they had a 0.5% chance to win.
13:21And then Devers goes deep, 9-3.
13:24It goes up to a 1% chance.
13:26By the time it's 10-6, Washington had a 98.5% chance to win that game.
13:32So the Giants have been on the wrong end of three of those in the last couple of weeks.
13:36And this time they got one to go their way.
13:39And I keep saying they were down 9-2.
13:41I think you just said it.
13:439-1.
13:43They were down 9-1.
13:44Right.
13:44They were down 9-1.
13:45And after Bryce hit the home run, MLB is saying they had a 100% chance to win that game.
13:50Okay, good.
13:51Just as we're doing the percentage game.
13:53Thank you, MLB.
13:54Yep.
13:54There's more from Bryce.
13:55I'm looking for a pitch to drive.
13:58Being on the on-deck circle, I think the only thing I was envisioning was Jungie getting on base
14:03and me ending the game.
14:03And I think the mind's a powerful tool.
14:06And I saw it before it happened.
14:08So that was pretty cool.
14:09But, yeah, I was just looking for a pitch to drive.
14:11And I got one hanging.
14:12And I'm glad I did what I was supposed to do with that pitch.
14:16Okay.
14:16And one more.
14:17And I think this might be among the most important.
14:19This is all fun.
14:21But Matt Chapman this year has been through a lot from our fan base.
14:28And I think we just need to admit that.
14:30You know, and it goes well beyond some crazy person and a death threat.
14:34The criticism of his play, the criticism of, hey, catch the bleeping ball to Casey Schmidt.
14:41To me, Matt Chapman is having a rough year, but he's been a good giant.
14:45He's been a good leader on this team.
14:47He's been a professional and is out there grinding.
14:51And now things are finally starting to go his way.
14:54I'd like everybody to hear what Eldridge said after this game.
14:57It's Chapman.
14:58Chapman's been such a great leader.
15:00He's been awesome to me, picking me up when things aren't going well for me.
15:05Very grateful for him.
15:06But he had a whole lot of faith we were going to win that game.
15:08And last night after the game, after the loss, we were sitting in the cages.
15:12And he said he's going to hit three home runs today.
15:14He hit two, so he was close.
15:16But, no, he's a stud and he's been a great leader for us.
15:19And I think no matter what the situation is, we always got faith we can win the game.
15:23Okay.
15:24So, all of that, courtesy NBC Sports Bay Area, did Willie Adamas throw Gatorade on Bryce?
15:31Is he able to reach the top of Bryce's head?
15:34If it happened, it happened off camera.
15:37The guys asked him.
15:38It was Bonte and Sean Estes who were doing the post-game show on NBC Sports Bay Area.
15:42At the end of their interview, you just heard bits of it.
15:45They asked.
15:45They were waiting for it.
15:46And he said, I've already been doused twice.
15:48Okay.
15:49So, it happened off camera at some point.
15:50And, yeah, I mean, Adamas did not appear in this game.
15:53He had a day off.
15:54He didn't even come in to pinch hit.
15:56Yeah, lower back tightness was the reason.
15:58So, you give them today and they have tomorrow anyway.
16:00So, I wonder if you've got to go to somebody else for the dousing.
16:03Because that bucket can be heavy.
16:05And you've got a little bit of a back issue.
16:06I don't know.
16:07Oh, my gosh.
16:09Wow.
16:10Let's go to Jordan in Walnut Creek.
16:13Hi, Jordan.
16:14Thanks for calling Willard and Debs.
16:16What's up?
16:17Yeah.
16:18Okay.
16:18So, let's talk about this for a second.
16:21Who was Buster Posey when he played?
16:24He was calm.
16:25He was cool.
16:26He was collect.
16:27He never rushed decisions.
16:29And what is the most important part of this season so far?
16:32It's not Devers' frustrations.
16:35It's not Adamas.
16:36It's the development of Bryce Eldridge.
16:39Everybody wanted Eldridge in the show coming out of spring.
16:42He was batting .225 in spring.
16:45Posey did not like .225.
16:47If he was 28, yeah, put him in the show, whatever.
16:50Not expecting a big career.
16:52But Posey knows this is the most important thing to the Giants' success in the next 10 to 15 years.
16:58And he was patient with Bryce.
17:00What we're seeing would not have happened if he was on this team in April.
17:03So, all the love to Posey for handling this.
17:07Everybody's so focused on the now with this team.
17:10Think about what's happening over the next 5, 10, 15 years with Bryce at the helm of it.
17:16Jordan, thanks.
17:17You know, that's an interesting one.
17:19I always feel like it's a little bit of a cherry pick when we say this would or wouldn't have
17:24happened.
17:24Impossible.
17:25Like, I don't know.
17:26I don't know.
17:27I'm never going to back off the idea that I don't think you call up a number one prospect and
17:33then sit him.
17:34But I was never worried about the long term with it.
17:37I was worried about the short term with it.
17:40And how do you know that if Bryce Eldridge wasn't playing a lot more a month ago,
17:46that the Giants might be only eight games under .500?
17:50Yeah.
17:50I mean, I could make that comment, too.
17:53It's impossible to know.
17:53I don't really believe that.
17:55So, I mean, Jordan, your point is well taken.
17:59I think the long view has always been the more important one.
18:02But what really happened here is Bryce forced everybody's hand.
18:08And I was trying to tell everybody when the guy was hitting .150, I'm like, are you watching the games?
18:14Dude, he's rifling balls into people's gloves.
18:17He's hitting the ball fine.
18:19Don't give me he's hitting .150.
18:21This guy's doing it.
18:22And now he's really, really doing it.
18:25And he has forced their hand.
18:27And let's not act like the problem has been taken care of because Elliott Ramos is about two weeks away.
18:32And what the hell are you going to do?
18:34They're going to figure something out.
18:35And, you know, you can keep doing the back and forth with those two.
18:38And you can, you know, give guys breaks.
18:40Although, right now, you cannot take Matt Chapman out of the lineup all of a sudden.
18:44I'm looking at his June numbers, Mark.
18:46And in 10 games in June, Chapman has five home runs.
18:51He's driven in 18.
18:52And his OPS is a rack.
18:561,000.
18:57His OPS in 10 games.
18:59It's not a small sample when you look at a month.
19:02And last month, he was, you know, not as good.
19:05April, he was just fine.
19:07But in June, he's been unbelievable.
19:10And Jung-Hoo Lee, the hitting streak continues.
19:12What is it now?
19:1319 games?
19:14Is that right?
19:1518, I think.
19:1518 for Jung-Hoo Lee.
19:16I believe, yes.
19:17And Arise is doing what he does.
19:19And, you know, Devers with the long ball.
19:21You're starting to see, with Bryce Eldridge, you know, at the sixth spot, you're starting
19:25to see a lineup that is kind of dangerous at this point.
19:29Well, yeah, the lineup has not, quite frankly, for five weeks now, has not really been an issue.
19:35You know, there are games where you're only going to score one run, two runs.
19:38That's baseball.
19:38That'll always be that way.
19:40The data is all there.
19:42The Giants are hitting the ball just fine.
19:44They don't pitch the ball well enough.
19:46And it really comes to the surface when it gets into the late innings.
19:49And you need high-leverage relievers, and they don't have any.
19:53And even their starting pitching is very, very suspect and thin.
19:57So, that's what defines this team right now.
20:02And, by the way, really good observation.
20:06925, thank you for texting in.
20:09We didn't mention this yet.
20:11The base hit that Jung-Hoo got, followed by the home run that Bryce got,
20:16tell me about the guy who was pitching, and what arm he throws with.
20:20I think he's a lefty, Mark.
20:22Okay, so, this is another force-your-hand situation.
20:26San Francisco Giants management, Tony, Zach, Buster,
20:31I don't care if the pitcher's right-handed, left-handed, underhand, overhand,
20:38spits the ball, rolls the ball, pitches naked, or tarps off.
20:42Bryce is in.
20:46Period.
20:47There's no platooning.
20:50No platooning with this player.
20:53The same way there's no platooning with Jung-Hoo Lee,
20:56who also rifled a solid base hit off of a left-hander.
21:00A specific reliever they brought in to face those two hitters.
21:03Exactly.
21:03And it didn't really work out.
21:05And so, right now, you don't take Chapman out.
21:07Casey Schmidt is still doing enough to where he plays,
21:10and Jung-Hoo Lee plays, and Arise has to play,
21:13because all he does is get two hits out of every four or five at-bat.
21:17So, it's getting tougher for, you know, the catcher thing back and forth.
21:21Haas, Susak, Susak, Haas, and, you know,
21:23Barracotto against a lefty today,
21:25and you get to throw Gilbert out there and eventually Bader, whatever.
21:28You still have bottom-of-the-ore guys you can shuffle,
21:31but your big six, your big seven even, they all have to play all the time.
21:35Well, and Flem suggested, by the way, that if it were up to him,
21:41and he goes, I get why Tony Vitello is not messing with this,
21:46but sort of feel like the Giants might be at their best
21:48if Jung-Hoo Lee is leading off and Bryce Eldridge is hitting second.
21:53And he may be right.
21:54I don't know if you mess with it right now,
21:57because these guys are just absolutely balling,
22:00but he's probably right.
22:02You know, they've been using Adamas a lot in the leadoff spot.
22:05Not big on it.
22:07Yeah, and a lot of Schmidt lately.
22:09A lot of Schmidt lately.
22:09I think you do want that righty-lefty if you can.
22:12That's fine. That's fine.
22:13Yeah, I get it.
22:14Look, I'm not like, I don't sort of, I'm not a lineup guy that much.
22:19I don't, like, just be in the lineup is what I'm more concerned about.
22:24But do you want to move him up from sixth?
22:26Might start thinking about it, but then you're also like,
22:28look, it's working.
22:29Right.
22:30You know what I mean?
22:30Don't want to put pressure on him and suddenly ask him at age 21
22:33to be like, you're the cleanup hitter for the rest of our lives.
22:36I don't know.
22:37I don't know on that one.
22:38But those two guys are giving you the best at-bats on the team and it's not close.
22:45Yeah.
22:46I mean, it's been phenomenal and you've got a lot of guys who are kind of doing that best
22:50at-bats, but it's certainly Jung-Hoo Lee and Eldridge.
22:53But I do like him down at six because of what that can do now when he's hitting so well
22:58for the guys in front of him, because you're going to have to pitch to them knowing that
23:02you're going to have to face Eldridge in the sixth hole.
23:048-8, 9-5-7, 9-5-70.
23:06The Giants rally from eight runs down.
23:08They win 11-10 on a walk-off Bryce Eldridge grand slam.
23:13Are you kidding me?
23:15Are you kidding me?
