Police bolster 'accident' theory in deaths of 2 Ateneo student-athletes

Col. Percival Pineda, Aurora police provincial director, tells an online press briefing at Camp Crame in Quezon City on June 10, 2026 that it took almost 30-40 minutes before the bodies of Ateneo basketball varsity players, Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, were recovered five feet off the coast in Dipaculao. Pineda said that during training at around 2:30 p.m. on June 6, the Ateneo players were made to walk in waist-deep water until they reached the deeper part of the sea before they were swept away by strong waves.
