Fingersi matto per uno scopo, indossare la maschera del folle per ingannare il potere o per assumerne a propria volta è un espediente che chiunque ha pensato di utilizzare per sfuggire a situazioni spinose o quasi autoassolversi da colpe e responsabilità.
Numerose sono le storie di mafiosi e camorristi, criminali e banditi, come Agostino Badalamenti o Balduccio di Maggio, Raffaele Cutolo e Marcello Colafigli, che hanno pagato per ottenere certificati medici in cui si attestasse la loro pazzia e per questo hanno scelto di umiliarsi fingendo malattie, e dichiarando di essere Napoleone e di sentire voci, o invocando la mamma come bambini. Finzioni da miserabili che però li hanno resi forti e potenti nel loro clan mafioso, perché sono riusciti a ingannare i giudici, a “fregare” lo Stato. La storia di Cosa Nostra e della camorra è piena di storie di questo tipo (“il maxiprocesso sembrava un ambulatorio di un medico della mutua”, sottolinea lo psichiatra Corrado De Rosa), che attraversano più di quaranta anni di vicende criminali, e affondano le loro radici nel sistema corruttivo che le organizzazioni criminali hanno messo in piedi, servendosi anche di personaggi inquietanti come Aldo Semerari, psichiatra forense, ucciso proprio perché prestava i suoi servizi da perito corrotto a due clan camorristici contrapposti. “C’è stata una stagione – ricorda lo scrittore Giancarlo De Cataldo - tra la fine degli anni 70 e l’inizio degli anni 80, in cui l’ospedale psichiatrico giudiziario era una sorta di Hotel nel quale trovavano rifugio i più importanti boss ed esponenti della malavita, e ciò poteva avvenire solo grazie a delle perizie compiacenti”.
